Lieberman Uses Foiled British Terror Plot To Push For Greater U.S. Domestic Spying

Appearing on ABC’s This Week, Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) used the foiled terror attempts in London to call for greater domestic spying here in the United States. Lieberman said, “I hope these terrorist attacks in London wake us up here in America to stop the petty partisan fighting going on about…electronic surveillance,” in apparent reference to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s subpoenas for documents related to Bush’s NSA warrantless wiretapping program.

Lieberman claimed, “We’re at a partisan gridlock over the question of whether the American government can listen into conversations or follow email trails of non-American citizens.” This is false; the NSA spying program covered the surveillance of American citizens. The “gridlock” exists over whether the administration will cooperate with Congress by explaining why it feels current law is inadequate and why President Bush decided to ignore the law in authorizing a spying program that almost led to mass resignations at the Department of Justice.

Liebermen went further in his calls for greater domestic spying. “The Brits have got something smart going. … They have have cameras all over London. … I think it’s just common sense to do that here much more widely.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/07/liebermanspying.320.240.flv]

In the same interview, Lieberman said of the situation in Iraq, “The surge is working.” He refused to say whether he would back a withdrawal if Gen. Petraeus reports in September that progress is not being made.

Also, Lieberman reaffirmed his previous statements that Democratic candidates do not have “strong and muscular” approaches to foreign policy. Today, he said, “I would say that Democratic candidates, in the larger questions of American security, have been disappointing.”

UPDATE: In Aug. 2006, Lieberman seized on a terror plot in Britain to criticize Ned Lamont’s opposition to the war in Iraq.

UPDATE II: Atrios recalls Lieberman’s claim that a “complete withdrawal is possible by late 2007 or early 2008.”

Digg It!

Gawd, I wish that the Democrats could Kick LIEberman to the curb. He is an embarrassment to the Democratic party.

He thinks that the Keystone Terrorists in Britain are a reason to spy on Americans? Why is that? Did the British government catch these jokers before they pulled off their stunt? Did they accomplish this by spying on British citizens. The answer to these two questions is No. So, I don't really see the connection that LIEberman is making.

I really wish there was some way we could make LIEberman STFU. Every time he opens his mouth it is on the front page of papers all across this country. But, if Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid say something of importance, it is pretty much ignored.

  2. Jane E. Schneider Says:

"This is about the security of our country and our people with an enemy that is prepared to attack us again and again here at home."

Yeah, but he's talking about the wrong "enemy". It's about the current administration who is undermining the security of our country, and is attacking us and our Constitution again and again here at home.

Why doesn't Joe just move to Israel? They have the "strong and muscular" foreign policy that he apparently dreams of. And he probably has more constituents there than in Connecticut!

  3. funky p Says:

    What is with this guy?
He is a true scumbag; why doesn't he declare himself a neo-con republican and quit pretending he represents anyone besides AIPAC.
Electronic surveillance did not stop the London bomb plot. Incompetency on the part of the "terrorists" did.
We have sufficient protections in place through the FISA court to spy on our enemies. Joe wants the gov't to be able to spy without a warrant. He needs to read the Constitution...he seems to be unaware of the fourth amendment, among others.
And he thinks we can install surveillance cameras everywhere "And of course, we can do it without compromising anybody’s real privacy."
What the fukc does he mean 'real privacy'
Impeach him along with the rest of them.

  4. owlbear1 Says:

Remember when politicians used to tell you, "Vote for me, I'll make your life better."?

One thing 9/11 sure did change,... "Vote for me or you will die a fiery death blown to smithereens by a mad dog TERRORIST while you're out watching your daughter's soccer game!".
    BOOOOOOOooooooo!

  5. Arthur C. Says:

Joe Lieberman? Who pays attention to that delusional monster? Bedwetters like Lieberman will never be able to win a war; they don't have what it takes: regular contact with reality.

  6. barfly Says:

LIEBERMAN: Well, I’m talking about two things. The first is the so-called FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that was adopted in the ’70s. Technology has — both that used by the enemy, the terrorists, and that used by us has improved dramatically.

Ok, Lieberman now is clearly dizzy from republican spin. He can't even mount a logical defense. He's saying, in essence, "technology has improved, so the Bush administration shouldn't be required to get the OK of the FISA court," even though the court's reporting requirements don't interfere with the administration's investigational activities.

And somewhere in Iraq, another soldier dies today, because of Lieberman's political ambitions. Holy Joe thinks he'll triagulate himself into the White House.

Lord, deliver us from this evil man.

  7. BARTLEBEE Says:

Sen. Joseph Lieberman is total Bullshit, just like the rest of the neo -cons.

    LIEberman...

This is the standard line. Reduce everything to "partisan politics." This is what the Repub..neocons have been selling to the American public since RAYGUN took office. Repeat, repeat, repeat... Whenever the Democrats disagree with their fantasy they are playing partisan politics. To the uninformed it is a line that works and there are a lot of them out there.

Not because of our "freedoms" but because of our interference in THEIR governments, because of our greed in manipulating THEIR oil for the last 50 or 60 years, and for generally being assholes for the past 6 years and treating other people and nations as if they didn't count and weren't worth respecting.

If you treat people like that Joe, then you should be afraid.

You notice that in the first bombing of the World Trade Center, Clinton didn't use those attacks to tear down the American constitution or to scare people into stupidity. He just dealt with the problem!!!!! All of those people are in prison, duly dealt with by the laws of this land!!!! And he didn't take away anyones constitutional rights or tell us that we have to let the president or the vice president to do whatever they want with no oversight.

Shame on you Joe. You would make the founding fathers shake their heads in shame. They had more to fear than you ever will, and they faced that fear and stood strong. You just piss yourself and cry for Daddy to save you.

Lieberman claimed, “We’re at a partisan gridlock over the question of whether the American government can listen into conversations or follow email trails of non-American citizens.”

What a f n liar and he doesn't get called on that. When you let false claims go unchallenged that you know in fact to be false (a lie), you are essentially agreeing with the the claim. shame on the "liberal media" for not standing up for truth in reporting and interviews. LIEberman can make all the false accusations he wants but if the media doesn't call him on it, then his lies become truth in the minds of those who don't bother to check out the facts on their own. That is exactly why 40% of Americans STILL believe that the terrorists on 9/11 were from Iraq or that WMD's were found, or that Saddam directly planned 9/11. Our media is in a sad state.

  55. Bruce Gorton Says:

He does realise that the bombs were detected because the first car was illegally parked and the cop noticed it through the windshield doesn't he?

The Rule under which the present Senate is organized, including committee representation, etc, is good till the new Senate is sworn in post-2008. The Rule adopted after the post-2006 election is not affected, unlike the Rule under which the Senate was organized post-2000, by defections, a la Jeffords. Sounds reasonable to me. Really hadn't thought about it that way. Thanks for the thought. So that means the Dems are being held hostage by a thug. Pragmatically, the extortion must be paid until his temporary "power" is gone in 2008. Selling your soul for survival is painful, to say the least. Even if it is necessary and temporary.

  62. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Kicking Lieberman to the curb sounds nice. The downside is the Democrats lose control of Senate Committees.

The upside is Democrats no longer have a closet Republican in their caucus. (Anybody here not think Lieberman doesn't tell Republicans what goes on behind closed doors in Democratic caucuses? - and yes, that's a correct use of a double negative)

Another upside: the voters of Connecticut will have to face the reality that they elected a Republican/

And the country and world will learn even more how it is the Republicans who have created the gridlock in the Senate.

There is a wild card or two in this equation. One or two Republican Senators are sounding more mainstream than the Republican Party. What if they became Independent and caucused with the Democrats?

Lieberman could then be kicked to the curb without incurring the downside.

So, instead of focusing your thoughts on Boltin' Joe Lieberman, you might want to think about encouraging a few Republican Senators to become Independent.

Well probably not at all if it is entirely redundant.

The most common criticism of the PATRIOT Act is that it turns the type of surveillence reserved for foreign targets (by the CIA) against US citizens.

The UK has it's own version of the CIA and another one dedicated entirely to this type of domestic activity.
WTF would they do with a PATRIOT act ? Use it as a paperweight ?

Then, understanding that the Senate Dems know this, I ask again:

"Well, he is not an embarrassment to the Dems. He ain’t one anymore. All the more reason why he should be stripped of the power he holds. I don’t understand why this has not been done. What would be the negative cost of kicking him to the curb? That he will vote with the Rethugs?"

What possible motive is there to keep this eunich in a position of power?

    Obstruct The Obstructionists

    by digby

I know everyone is probably headed out for the holiday, but if you have time for one more thing, read this post by Robert Borosage of the Campaign For America's Future:

In its first 40 hours, the new majority of the House of Representatives kept their promise to voters and passed legislation—increasing the minimum wage for the first time in a decade, empowering Medicare to negotiate lower prices on drugs, cutting interest rates on student loans in half, revoking big oil subsidies and using the money to invest in renewable energy—that provided a down payment for a new direction for this country.

These bills are overwhelmingly popular, and are simply common sense reforms. Yet every one of them—and many more—got held up in the U.S. Senate.

Conservatives boast about the “success” of their strategy in discrediting the new majority. As Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott, R-Miss., put it, “the strategy of being obstructionist can work or fail. So far it’s working for us.”

How is it working? It’s dragging the reputation of the Congress down to the level of the failed president. Conservatives lie in the road of progress and then complain that nothing is moving.

This values partisan posturing over reforms vital to the country. It must be challenged.

It’s time to take the gloves off.

The first step is to expose the obstruction to the American people. Let’s urge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to force a real filibuster. Keep the bills on the floor and force vote after vote, exposing the obstructionists. We’ll organize in states across the country to insure that their constituents know exactly who is standing in the way of progress.

Campaign for America’s Future is creating a petition to Reid, urging him to expose the obstructionists. Please join the petition. Let’s insure that Americans are clear on who is pushing for change and who is standing in the way.

This is important for setting the terms of the debate as well as actually getting some of these initiatives off the ground. The congress is suffering in the polls because the Republicans are blocking any progress on issues that people care about. Now is the time to begin educating people about who is really responsible for this and it's going to take some drama. (Who knows when the next damsel in distress is going to hit the airwaves?)

I realize that the machinery is rusty and that it isn't easy with the Blue Dog/Lieberdem contingent. But the Democrats need to know that their voters have their backs on these issues. This is one way to do it.

    The petition is here.

I can only watch him on TV with the sound muted. Then I fill in the "Uhhhhhs..." that tend to creep into his public displays of neo-conservative blather.

While Ned Lamont wanted not only to end the war in Iraq but to change the way things were done inWashington. Joe not only wanted to push the war harder, he even defended the corrupt practice of "earmarking" by responding "Earmarks have been good for Connecticut" and promised even more because he knew how to work the system. A system his opponent wanted to help dismantle.

I wish the people of Connecticut had taken more time to think before they voted for him.

Every major IRA bombing in England and Northern Ireland has had the fingerprints of the British government and the FRU all over it.

Starting from at least the 1980's, SAS and British military intelligence agents were routinely ordered to embed themselves within violent branches of the IRA and aid terrorists in carrying out attacks. How do we know this happened? Because one of the individuals who was ordered to do so, Kevin Fulton, blew the whistle on the fact that he was told he had the Prime Minister's blessing to aid terrorists in bomb making and political assassinations.

In addition, mirroring the backdrop of the infiltration of the alleged liquid bomb plot, the August 15th 1998 Omagh bombing was allowed to proceed despite the fact that MI5 had fully infiltrated the Real IRA terror cell, knew the date of the bombing, and had tracked the terrorists' vehicle as it was driven to the bomb site. Again, in this case MI5 had one of their own agents within the bomb squad itself. In this instance, the car bombing went forward and 29 people, including two babies and nine children, were ripped apart as they shopped in a quiet market street.

  105. Jay Randal Says:

In its lawsuit (filed Tuesday 31 January), the EFF alleges that AT&T, in addition to allowing unlawful wiretaps, gave the government "unfettered access" to its over 300 terabyte "Daytona" database of caller information. Yeah, but, see they don't have anything called the PATRIOT ACT. And since the Patriot Act has magical powers that stop terrorists by virtue of its great name, that's why Great Britain is getting "pounded into oblivion" according to He's12. Because they have all these other laws that you mentioned, but not one of them has "Patriot" in the title.

The fact that BushCo tried to take credit for the British police foiling the airliner plot a while back (another example of good police work as opposed to a domestic spy program) means nothing to He's12.

"What would be the negative cost of kicking him to the curb? "

The problem is that if LIEberman becomes a Republican, the Republican party technically will be in control since it will be 49-50. Even though Bernie Sanders votes with the Democrats, he isn't one. It would also throw a lot of power to Chaney since there might be a lot of 50/50 votes. LIEberman still does occasionally vote with the Democrats. But, I don't think it is enough to justify keeping him in the Democratic party. I think the Democrats should kick him out, take away his chairmanship of Homeland Security and let the chips lie where they may. LIEberman will have NO power on the Republican side of the table so if the Democrats kick him out of their caucus and off his committee, he will be clearly diminished.

The longer Congress avoids impeachment, the more nuts like Liberman -- despite the outrage over the illegal NSA spying -- will push for doing more illegal things.

It's not just about impeachment. It's about reversing the drivel from Lieberman's mouth.

Kos has a correction for Lieberman:
    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/7/1/12729/08767

Increased Government surveillance is useless. It's the people's inclination to take action, not the Government illegal activity, that is making this happen. The US Government's barbarity is inspiring others to continue what was the pretext for the original US government abuses and violations.

Lieberman's argument is flawed, based on a false premise, and would ask that we reward illegality and incompetence with less oversight, and more discretion to violate the law. This is the same circular thinking which the Administration exploited in teh wake of 9-11 to justify ignoring Geneva.

No, David Addington, your arrogance has not made us safer. Congratualtolins on being a target for a war crimes prsoecution and Congressional subpenas, along with Brad Berenson of Sidley Austin, former White House Counsel: You're targets of this investigation.

That is to say if they are even paying enough attention to ever realize what it is that they got. Which is to say some sort of Fallen Roman Empire/Nazi/Fascism/Gulag/Bush nation mix.

Welcome to 1984 (in 2007) and thus the creed of the scum-of-the-earth totalitarian imperialists, also called neoconservatives, who have robbed a former decent party-the Republicans. I cant imagine what Goldwater or Reagan would think if they knew their party of limited government and personal freedom got hijacked by these traitors. The only reason the Democrats have had any success whatsoever is that it is so easy to denounce the neocons because of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, Guantanamo Bay, secret CIA prisons, Extraordinary Rendition, Military Commissions Act, unncessary wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and our overwhelming Empire-like foreign interventionist. This has made us all less safe, cost the U.S. taxpayer billions, reduced our reputation around the world to a mear rubble, and cost us millions of possible dfollars being spent by possible tourists.

    Hey, big papa,
I was thinking earlier today that I hadn't seen posts from you in a while -- and there you are!

You are absolutely correct, as usual, we need more than the number of senators presently in office -- we need 60 votes to get anything we want passed and that will require some repugs coming to their senses (which, by the looks of it must be extremely difficult).
So many Dems don't recognize that the one vote majority we have really doesn't cut it -- it gave Dems the chairmanship of all the committees and therefore, all the investigations have begun, but insofar as passing legislation, it is next to impossible without any cooperation from the "dark side."
And don't forget, we are still short a vote in Johnson (but I hear he will be coming back by September).

Well yeah. He referred to it. There's at least 3 stories about it here on TP. Every news outlet everywhere on the planet has referenced it for the past 3 days.

If TP wasn't so misleading in it's portrayal of news stories they may have actually let you know what it was he was talking about.

That probably would have stopped a couple of people here noting how well Britsish police have responded to these incidents using the very tools that Lieberman is endorsing for the US. While criticising him for doing so of course.

That "good police work" consisted of months of complete domestic surveillence on dozens of people in the UK and abroad. The police were called in to make the arrests.

  195. Anon Says:

Lieberman's argument is meaningless: He's asking the US citizen to shift their attention from the illegal surveillance, and focuse on "excuses" to engage in illegal activity. Consider this report from Democracy Now, reporting on Lie-berman's non-sense:

Lieberman: UK Incident Should Drop Spy Opposition
Meanwhile here in the United States, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut said the bombing plots should encourage lawmakers to drop opposition to the Bush administration’s domestic spying on U.S. citizens. Speaking on ABC’s This Week, Lieberman said: “I hope these terrorist attacks in London wake us up here in America to stop the petty partisan fighting going on about…electronic surveillance.”

    http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/02/1331248

What Lie-berman doesn't say is the US surveillance when it is oversee by the FISA court, works just fine. Judge Lamberth recently commented on the issue, asserting his view that the Bush approach to surveillance has been reckless:

"What the president did with the NSA," Lamberth said, was "a proposal for a worse way," the Post reported.

Feb. 26, New York City: bomb exploded in basement garage of World Trade Center, killing 6 and injuring at least 1,040 others. In 1995, militant Islamist Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 9 others were convicted of conspiracy charges, and in 1998, Ramzi Yousef, believed to have been the mastermind, was convicted of the bombing. Al-Qaeda involvement is suspected.

    1996
June 25, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia: truck bomb exploded outside Khobar Towers military complex, killing 19 American servicemen and injuring hundreds of others. 13 Saudis and a Lebanese, all alleged members of Islamic militant group Hezbollah, were indicted on charges relating to the attack in June 2001.

    1998
Aug. 7, Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: truck bombs exploded almost simultaneously near 2 U.S. embassies, killing 224 (213 in Kenya and 11 in Tanzania) and injuring about 4,500. 4 men connected with al-Qaeda 2 of whom had received training at al-Qaeda camps inside Afghanistan, were convicted of the killings in May 2001 and later sentenced to life in prison. A federal grand jury had indicted 22 men in connection with the attacks, including Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, who remained at large.

    2000
Oct. 12, Aden, Yemen: U.S. Navy destroyer USS Cole heavily damaged when a small boat loaded with explosives blew up alongside it. 17 sailors killed. Linked to Osama bin Laden, or members of al-Qaeda terrorist network.
