Feb. 26, New York City: bomb exploded in basement garage of World Trade Center, killing 6 and injuring at least 1,040 others. In 1995, militant Islamist Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 9 others were convicted of conspiracy charges, and in 1998, Ramzi Yousef, believed to have been the mastermind, was convicted of the bombing. Al-Qaeda involvement is suspected.

1996
June 25, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia: truck bomb exploded outside Khobar Towers military complex, killing 19 American servicemen and injuring hundreds of others. 13 Saudis and a Lebanese, all alleged members of Islamic militant group Hezbollah, were indicted on charges relating to the attack in June 2001.

1998
Aug. 7, Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: truck bombs exploded almost simultaneously near 2 U.S. embassies, killing 224 (213 in Kenya and 11 in Tanzania) and injuring about 4,500. 4 men connected with al-Qaeda 2 of whom had received training at al-Qaeda camps inside Afghanistan, were convicted of the killings in May 2001 and later sentenced to life in prison. A federal grand jury had indicted 22 men in connection with the attacks, including Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, who remained at large.

2000
Oct. 12, Aden, Yemen: U.S. Navy destroyer USS Cole heavily damaged when a small boat loaded with explosives blew up alongside it. 17 sailors killed. Linked to Osama bin Laden, or members of al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Lieberman: UK Incident Should Drop Spy Opposition
Meanwhile here in the United States, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut said the bombing plots should encourage lawmakers to drop opposition to the Bush administration’s domestic spying on U.S. citizens. Speaking on ABC’s This Week, Lieberman said: “I hope these terrorist attacks in London wake us up here in America to stop the petty partisan fighting going on about…electronic surveillance.”

What Lie-berman doesn’t say is the US surveillance when it is oversee by the FISA court, works just fine. Judge Lamberth recently commented on the issue, asserting his view that the Bush approach to surveillance has been reckless:

“What the president did with the NSA,” Lamberth said, was “a proposal for a worse way,” the Post reported.

You missed my point. Lieberman uses his position as a power platform. A bully pulpit. Were he removed from that position he would be left wandering in the wilderness like a man without a country. I doubt he would get the media coverage he enjoys now.

Seriously, you know that the UK has a domestic intelligence service but you thought that some regular cop would be responsible for 24/7 surveillence on terrorist suspects ?

That “good police work” consisted of months of complete domestic surveillence on dozens of people in the UK and abroad. The police were called in to make the arrests.

Again, you’re praising the successes of having a dedicated domestic intelligence agency.

Does he have an example from any point in history, from the beginning of time through today, where any of his ideas have actually worked.

Well yeah. He referred to it. There’s at least 3 stories about it here on TP. Every news outlet everywhere on the planet has referenced it for the past 3 days.

If TP wasn’t so misleading in it’s portrayal of news stories they may have actually let you know what it was he was talking about.

That probably would have stopped a couple of people here noting how well Britsish police have responded to these incidents using the very tools that Lieberman is endorsing for the US. While criticising him for doing so of course.

The amount of damage he has done to this country and the rest of the world is beyond comprehension. The toxic cleanup will be a massive effort, indeed.

You are absolutely correct, as usual, we need more than the number of senators presently in office — we need 60 votes to get anything we want passed and that will require some repugs coming to their senses (which, by the looks of it must be extremely difficult).
So many Dems don’t recognize that the one vote majority we have really doesn’t cut it — it gave Dems the chairmanship of all the committees and therefore, all the investigations have begun, but insofar as passing legislation, it is next to impossible without any cooperation from the “dark side.”
And don’t forget, we are still short a vote in Johnson (but I hear he will be coming back by September).
