Chertoff: ‘Lieberman Is Dead Right’ In Calling For Increased Wiretapping»

Yesterday, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) used the foiled terror attempts in London to call for greater domestic spying in the United States. “I hope these terrorist attacks in London wake us up here in America to stop the petty partisan fighting going on about…electronic surveillance,” Lieberman said, referencing the Senate Judiciary Committee’s recent subpoenas of documents related to Bush’s wiretapping program that the White House has refused to release.

Today, on Fox and Friends, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff echoed Lieberman’s call, arguing that Lieberman was “dead right” in calling for increased domestic surveillance:

CHERTOFF: I’m concerned about losing the tools that I can tell you we use every single day to catch the kind of plotting which we’ve just seen, obviously, give rise to the attempted bombings in London. I think Joe Lieberman is dead right.

Watch it:

Screenshot

British surveillance did not prevent the London attacks. In fact, “[t]here had been no prior intelligence of planned attacks from the terror organization.” Instead, vigilant citizens helped prevent the bombings:

The events unfolded when police were called to Haymarket, south of Piccadilly Circus, after a man fell at the nightclub Tiger Tiger, injuring his head, prompting a call for an ambulance around 1:30 a.m. Friday. When crews arrived, they noticed smoke coming from a green Mercedes parked in front of a club. […]

The announcement of the second bomb came about 20 hours later … [a car] had been towed across town to an impound lot; the attendants there, on the alert after news of the first foiled car bombing, smelled gasoline and alerted authorities.

Currently, the White House is refusing to cooperate with Congress by not explaining why current surveillance methods are insufficient and why it feels it needs even more intrusive spying on American citizens.

  9. Keith H. Says:

So then, let’s just forget about the subpoenas and the investigation.

These car bombs defused in London really should show everyone here at home that whatever GWB and company have done and are currently doing is really necessary and the law matters not.

  10. clb72 Says:

    Terrorists caught.

    With no wiretapping.

Chertoff and Lieberman: This provides rationale for wiretapping.

The cream really does rise to the top.

  11. buckles Says:

Let’s start with the wiretapping of Chertoff, Bush, Cheney, et al., put it out on the web, and we’ll go from there. No? Well then… NO! As it is, they can spy all they want - with probably cause and a warrant, even after the fact. If they find it hard doing that, then it only further shows their incompetence.

  16. John Says:

of course he thought that. has anyone currently in this administration shown any indication of critical thought or remorse? I think we’d all be a lot happier if we changed our expectations of this administration and started to move forward based on the assumption that they do not play to our nation’s better instincts or represent a positive path into the future.

  20. Rebel in CA Says:

Chertoff (Israeli Citizen and sometiem head of DHS) and Rabbi Sen. Lie-Berman (I-Israel) both agree that Israel spying on US Citizen’s should increase. Ain’y that cozy

  21. shane Says:

How can people who ignore subpoenas intended to find the truth then propose illegal wiretaps to find the “truth”? I guess the only way we’ll get to the bottom of the corruption of the administration is illegal wiretaps at the Whitehouse.

  22. Wayne Says:

What idiot does not get is that the first 2 car bombs were noticed and reported by citizens. No amount of wiretapping would have discovered these attacks.

But that doesn’t stop the neocon clowns from pushing their anti-constitutional BS.

Freedom Fascism is on the march…..

  23. missmolly Says:

“Be afraid…..be very afraid…..!!” — and the rabble immediately fell in line, surrendering their rights with nary a whimper.

When I see that wiretapping actually works (you REALLY think terrorists are going to discuss their plans on anything other than a throwaway pre-paid cell phone?), I may open my mind to the idea. But until then, spying on the American people violates the very freedom we are supposedly fighting for.

(Wonder what Chertoff would say if a senator urged a ban on firearms in the name of national security? Would he be so quick to agree?)

  24. CT_V1, Dean of Trolls Says:

Hey, you guys want to hear an ant-Bush joke? Good.

Ex-Governor Bush Called Former President Clinton one afternoon.

“Hello, Bill? It’s Dubya. Say, I’ve been meanin’ ta ask ya sumthin’. How did you do so well with the ladies when you were president?”

“I’ll tell ya, George. The trick is to dazzle them with charm and intelligent conversation.”

“Yeah, but what can I do?” asked Bush.

Clinton paused. “Well, George, if all else fails, try puttin’ a potato down your pants. That works every time.”

The next week, Bush called Clinton again.

“Bill? Dubya. Laura was in Crawford over the weekend and I got to go stag to the embassy ball. I tried the potato trick, but all the ladies kept their distance.”

“I know, I saw the ball on C-SPAN,” laughed Clinton. “Next time, try puttin’ the potato down the front of your pants.”

yes, because you and your associates have been so spot on in the past, please, by all means, start wiretapping everybody.

  30. JMOHR Says:

Note that the Chertoff/lieberfuher view encompasses wiretapping on citizens and/or residents of the United States. This means that they are championing the wholesale wiretapping on a domestic basis. Note how this contradicts the current justification for non warrant taps because one party is not in the United States. Cool! We have wholesale wire tapping without prior review. We will never have any evidence of abuse of the power. No one will know that they were tapped since it secret. The administration will find this to be proof that no abuse occurred. Except maybe for those citizen protestors and Democratic politicians who are picked up as “enemy” combatants. We won’t hear about those either.

  34. Doc Hickory Says:

Here’s a phrase you will never hear from our liberal media:

    “Disgraced Republican”

Those 2 words cannot be combined, simply because, in our national media’s collective mind, it is impossible for someone to be both a ‘Republican’ and ‘Disgraced’.

That is why Chertoff’s opinion is valued despite the death toll from Katrina due to his massive incompetence, Bernard Kerick’s opinion is valued despite stealing 9/11 funds to suck/f*ck Judith Regan, Robert Novak still has weekly editorials in the Washington Post despite outing a CIA covert agent and compromising our national security.

If Joe McCarthy was alive today he would have a talkshow on FOX (or MSNBC).

That’s twice you’ve claimed Joe Lieberman called for more wiretapping, without providing a source.

Which is odd, because there’s more than enough news reports about him calling for this increase in “electronic surveillence” you refer to.

I guess the problem is they all quote him in full, which clearly shows he was talking about how well the CCTV assists the police in the UK, what US cities have this already and proposes that this is the “electronic surveillence” that should be expanded.

“Right… so Islam, being a dogmatic religion, should be wiped out.”

I’m fine with that. Christianity as well. Although you and I disagree heavily on the means to do that I would guess.

I believe reason and intellectual honesty are the best methods.

Yup. That MuslimShiteater ™ should be tortured to the full extent of the law.

You might want to check how many tons of bombs over civilian population the US has poured since Gulf War. Thank you.

    Mr President,

“I say nuke ‘em all!!! The kaaba, The Vatican, and Jerus*lem!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

This is my point. You prefer violence over reason. Let’s call it the Stalinist atheist method. I disavow that ideology.

I don’t believe that your post will be appreciated among those who wish only to dictate belief. But I applaud your post. Most well thought out.
When I say belief, it is religious as well as political. But most of all it is about belief in their own self as people among people with hopes and dreams.

LOL! You beat me to that one. And bettered me with “raising the hopes of every patriotic American.”

He is a great example of Mark Twain’s observation:

“Died at 30, buried at 60.”

Islam is a religion. How did a religion turn normal every day Iraqi’s into terrorists? Try using that pea brain of yours for a little critical thinking. If we had not invaded Iraq, killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi’s and forced millions out of their homes and out of their country, I doubt that this Iraqi doctor would have felt compelled to do what he did.

You must have an IQ in the room temperature range considering your ability to think critically.

  115. Charon in SoCal Says:

I’d rather have ‘big brother’ looking down on me than get blown to bits by a terrorist bomb. Britain is a progressive country yet they don’t have a problem with the thousands of security camera’s around London. Lets face it as the great Bob Dylan sang ‘times are-a changin’!’ indeed they are and we’ve got to come to some hard realizations and sadly start changing our views along with them…

  116. Namtillaku Says:

Oh really, the criminals want to behave more criminally. I’m so surprised.

We better just give up all our rights, if we don’t we may have to face more terrorist attacks like the one in Scotland. I don’t know what I’d do, if someone tried to kill me by running a car into a building then setting themselves on fire - how could I get away? Yeah, I’m for all of my liberties taken from me.

  123. AlphaLiberal Says:

For cryin out loud you have not even had to pick up a gun and your ready to surrender to the 911 terrorists. If only you could stop pissing your pants for five little minutes you might realize that the biggest threat to this country and the world is the current administration.

  136. Alejandro Says:

    Here’s Chertoff in action!!

Iowa senators angry about propane plan

As a longtime farmer, Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley said he quickly saw the folly of new propane regulations proposed by the Department of Homeland Security.

The proposal would list propane as a chemical of interest when kept in quantities greater than 7,500 pounds, forcing a costly risk assessment.

Propane “is used by virtually every farmer to dry their grain or heat their house …,” Grassley said. “Hopefully they just don’t understand how the new regulations would affect every farmer or even non farmer.”

Many farmers use propane, and the proposal would require each to pay a one-time $2,300 to $3,500 fee for the assessment, which includes a background check.

    Heckuva job.

  138. The Unknown Democrat Says:

Joes Liebermann is dead wrong. He’s a Jew first and American last. He’s only hawkish because he wants to protect Israel. If he weren’t such a partisan Jew he’d think more about our freedom instead of protecting Israel. I’m for protecing Israel too, but am American first. Our security isn’t worth losing our freedom over. If we have to be slaves to Big Brother, then I will leave this country. Fools who don’t realize that Lieberman and the Republicans are trying to turn this country into a Police State are going to regret voting Republican, but then it will be too late.
