CREW released a report today called Crossing the Line: The Bush Administration’s Efforts to Expand Its Powerful Reach, “which details the Bush administration’s repeated constitutional overreaching and abuse of executive power and prerogative.” Some highlights:
– Recently it was revealed that the vice president has unilaterally exempted himself and his office from the executive order that governs the safeguarding of classified national security information.
– In response to a suit filed by Valerie and Joseph Wilson against Vice President Cheney and other top administration officials, Mr. Cheney argued that as vice president he is entitled to absolute immunity from suit.
– In a suit filed by CREW over a FOIA request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Hurricane Katrina-related documents, the government invoked the presidential communications privilege, suggesting an attempt to cover-up what President Bush actually knew before, during and after the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast.
Mr. Cheney argued that as vice president he is entitled to absolute immunity from suit.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:43 pmHe is even immune from AIDS, whooping cough and the DT’s.
And wiretaps AND the Iraq Occupation do not prevent terrorist attacks. So why did we hire these guys?
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:44 pmWhat the hell. Trolls think it’s a good thing, and that’s enough for me.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:44 pmSome have compared Cheney to someone who would do well under Hitler’s old regime. That doesn’t touch it.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:45 pmWelcome to the party CREW. we’ve been pointing this fact out for YEARS!
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:46 pmIf Pelosi can’t impeach this ass of a baffoon, then she is one herself.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:47 pmIt’s not so much that they’re crossing the line, it’s that they don’t recognize that there IS a line, and when pointed out to them, they chuckle at the whole concept of the line and pat people on the head for thinking up such a cute idea and warn them not to get too close to the heavy machinery in progress lest they lose a limb.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:48 pmRemember, impeachment is not about whether or not someone loses their office, its about telling the rest of the world that America is somewhat smart enough to see an emperor with no clothes.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:51 pmOur international standing is completely at stake.
sniff, did someone say something about lines? white lines?
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:51 pmI have been looking all over for that darn list of who is above the law in America. I’m having such a tough time finding it.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:53 pm“Recently it was revealed that the vice president has unilaterally exempted himself and his office from the executive order that governs the safeguarding of classified national security information.â€
“The government invoked the presidential communications privilege, suggesting an attempt to cover-up what President Bush actually knew before, during and after the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast.â€
What more can you say? Crying national security is the last refuge for dictators.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:00 pmThis administration is so far over the line that the line is beyond the horizon.
Speaker Pelosi, if you can’t do your job step down so someone else can.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:00 pm“Mr. Cheney argued that as vice president he is entitled to absolute immunity from suit.”
Do these guys even think about what kind of a precedent they are setting? Do they really want to have a Democratic President or Vice President who has absolute power who can break the law any time they wish without fear of repercussions?
Nancy Pelosi – it is long past time when you should put impeachment on the table. You don’t have to use it right away, but for gods sake, put it on the table. As long as it is off the table these creeps will continue to thumb their noses at congress and at “we the people”.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:02 pmI have been looking all over for that darn list of who is above the law in America. I’m having such a tough time finding it.
Use Web Crawler and type in ‘Nevada Land Deal; Reid; Senator’
or
‘Jefferson; Congressman; Frozen Caysh’
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:03 pmCan you imagine how nervous Cheney must be getting about his upcoming battery change? Who will be his replacement while he is under the knife and while recuperating? Perfect time for a power grab. Oops, hope I didn’t give away any secrets. (From Dick that is.)
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:04 pm‘…suggesting an attempt to cover-up what President Bush actually knew before, during and after the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast.
I can sum up what our President knows very quickly…
See?
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:05 pmI think we need to cut Cheney’s throat and watch all the spiders crawl out. This guy is so dirty even his socks have a hole right on the heel.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:05 pmI’m completely and sadly disappointed with Pelosi. She has no credibiity at this point.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:05 pmContact Nancy Pelosi and tell her to do her job or get out of the way for someone who will. Here’s her e-mail address as speaker:
http://www.speaker.gov/contact/
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:06 pmThis guy is so dirty even his socks have a hole right on the heel.
HEY!!!!!! My socks have a hole in the heel. UMMMMM, I mean UMMMMM nothing to see here move along.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:07 pm#14 – is that all you can come up with? Pretty lame. Reid was found to not be “above the law” and Jefferson is under indictment which is fine by us Progressives. We, unlike you Rethugs, want to get rid of the corrupt Democrats. I could list all the corrupt Repthugs, but my fingers would get tired typing.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:10 pmOr try googling ‘Feinstein; Senator; Hubby’s defense companies; Steering defense contracts.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:12 pmBefore the trolls arrive and derail this discussion, I ask that the intellectually honest members of the TP community make an effort to rid the boards of the likes of Michael and Mr. President, et. al., whose only purpose is to obstruct intelligent conversation of critical issues of the day.
I just sent a note to the site management, and I thought I should share, in case others feel like taking the initiative in trying to reduce the disruptive tactics trolls employ.
Thanks, Styve

July 2nd, 2007 at 3:16 pmHey great idea. That way you can flag anyone who disagrees with you, even if they are reasonably polite, and have this place to yourselves. What FUN!
You moron.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:16 pmIf Nancy Pelosi does not put impeachment back on the table, we need to change the words of the song to “Let fascism reign”.

Let this be the resonse. Copy and use.
Trolls only get three questions? Once answered they must let us cross the bridge.
Troll: ” Why do I sound so right?”
Answer: “Because you are right, in your own mind”
Troll: “When will I be understood”
Answer: When you can truly make sense and feel acceptance and love.
Troll: Why do I like to change the subject”
Answer: Because you’d have to make a case for the subject at hand and that would be beyond your capability.
Let this be our standard response to trolls
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:20 pmNot only are the rethuglicans fascists, but they drink Sprite too! LOL!
They remind me of a herd of zebras running on the prairie, all striped and their tails swishing at the flies! GOP goofs!

July 2nd, 2007 at 3:28 pmYou know, Patty, I apologize. The word idiot was wrong. And the statement that I started the thread was wrong. Your point is well taken.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:29 pmToo late. Bush already blew it up to hide the evidence. He had leftover plastique from the N.O. dike explosions so fortunately this will cost the taxpayers nothing.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:30 pmLeftcoast…thanks for seconding the motion! Patty…are you that shape-shifting supervillain Michael, or Mr. P, today?!
I heard that the journalists that wrote the 4 part series on Cheney has been researching for a full year…one would think they might have sensed some urgency, say, part-way through the 12 month period, and published something of a teaser?!

July 2nd, 2007 at 3:34 pmIntelligencia has discoverd that the government had sharks with laser beams.

July 2nd, 2007 at 3:41 pmActually, I’d recommend a more slashdot style system, with kudos and flags given for good and bad posts (it’s similar to Daily KOS too). The idea would be that if you had someone who you just disagreed with, you’d be offset by others who might give him kudos to offset the disagreement misflags.
Nothing’s perfect, but honestly, it’d be a better system than what we have now. We have a group of Trolls organizing, brazenly, in the open, using overt disruptive techniques. While playing with them can be fun, I’d love to quash the whole ‘We’re taking over’ mentality.

Depends on which in-Continentancy you prefer.
July 2nd, 2007 at 3:45 pmOh, yeah. And MANDATORY REGISTRATION. No need for real names, but a required e-mail address and handle, with an assigned password, and a mandatory waiting period before first post. Again, not perfect (the perfect solution would be IP address or cookie based, preventing one computer from having multiple accounts), but the perfect route is rather orwellian…
On-Topic Dig: … could get us accused of ‘crossing the line’, much like Bush’s Administration. ;)

We don’t want you here. You are not welcome here, and the day your computer eats its hard drive, taking all your porn with it, and depriving you of your daily fix will be a day we’ll celebrate. If we COULD ban you, many of us would, gladly.
And you’d scream we’re violating your freedom of speech. Guess what. Unless this Blog is run by the government, we wouldn’t. Freedom of Speech doesn’t extend into someone’s private property. Be thankful that the PTB haven’t implemented a flagging system. The moment they do, I’ll be gladly adding my flags to your posts.

If you think about it, the Trolls pretty much loose as they come out the gate. TP is news and comment. We get our comment in. They die off because a troll must battle without news of that which does nothing to help their make believe world.
July 2nd, 2007 at 4:15 pmUnfortunately, the control rests in the hands of the guys running the show. I don’t know if the blogging software Think Progress uses supports user registration, user rating, and community enforced banning. I suspect that the folks at Think Progress don’t wish to enable those features, or they don’t think it’s a problem. If it’s the latter, only E-Mail from _everyone_ will get their attention. If it’s the former, then the Trolls have already won the technological battle…
July 2nd, 2007 at 4:16 pmThe supreme court ruled that even as President, Bill Clinton was not immune to civil suits. That’s how they were able to get him to give a deposition about Monica Lewinsky, which led to his impeachment. Mr. Cheney is not immune to suits of law.
July 2nd, 2007 at 4:20 pmACTUALLY US TROLLS ARE PAID BY TP.
WHAT?
DID YOU REALLY THINK WE COULD GET AWAY WITH THE SHIT WE PULL IF WE WERE NOT CONNECTED TO THE GUYS RUNNIN’ THE SHOW?

Some trolls use proxy servers.
How about Googling, “entire political process corrupted”
Dems are stinky Donkeys, and Repukes are meth-addicted elephants.
July 2nd, 2007 at 5:15 pmYet Cheney still wears a suit everyday. I don’t get it.
July 2nd, 2007 at 5:18 pmCREW must be slow on the uptake. These good ol fellers crossed the line in 2000, in Florida.
July 2nd, 2007 at 5:19 pmBush administration is ‘crossing the line.’
But… but… the trolls told me it was ok…. just like with Iraq: all we have to do is close our eyes, put all our trust in the hands of the Bush administration, and everything will be ok. Just like the rebuilding of New Orleans, the budget deficit, the hunt for Iraq’s WMD, or finding Bin Laden. Or the occupation of Iraq, for that matter.
Mission accomplished, no?
