CREW: Bush administration is ‘crossing the line.’

CREW released a report today called Crossing the Line: The Bush Administration’s Efforts to Expand Its Powerful Reach, “which details the Bush administration’s repeated constitutional overreaching and abuse of executive power and prerogative.” Some highlights:

– Recently it was revealed that the vice president has unilaterally exempted himself and his office from the executive order that governs the safeguarding of classified national security information.

– In response to a suit filed by Valerie and Joseph Wilson against Vice President Cheney and other top administration officials, Mr. Cheney argued that as vice president he is entitled to absolute immunity from suit.

– In a suit filed by CREW over a FOIA request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Hurricane Katrina-related documents, the government invoked the presidential communications privilege, suggesting an attempt to cover-up what President Bush actually knew before, during and after the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast.

Mr. Cheney argued that as vice president he is entitled to absolute immunity from suit.
He is even immune from AIDS, whooping cough and the DT’s.

  2. LandSurveyor says:

And wiretaps AND the Iraq Occupation do not prevent terrorist attacks. So why did we hire these guys?

  3. VerbalKint says:

What the hell. Trolls think it’s a good thing, and that’s enough for me.

  4. adam says:

Some have compared Cheney to someone who would do well under Hitler’s old regime. That doesn’t touch it.

  5. unbelievable says:

Welcome to the party CREW. we’ve been pointing this fact out for YEARS!

  6. leftcoast says:

If Pelosi can’t impeach this ass of a baffoon, then she is one herself.

  7. DM says:

It’s not so much that they’re crossing the line, it’s that they don’t recognize that there IS a line, and when pointed out to them, they chuckle at the whole concept of the line and pat people on the head for thinking up such a cute idea and warn them not to get too close to the heavy machinery in progress lest they lose a limb.

  8. leftcoast says:

Remember, impeachment is not about whether or not someone loses their office, its about telling the rest of the world that America is somewhat smart enough to see an emperor with no clothes.
Our international standing is completely at stake.

  9. G W Bushnull says:

sniff, did someone say something about lines? white lines?

  10. Tundra says:

What more can you say? Crying national security is the last refuge for dictators.

  12. Zooey says:

This administration is so far over the line that the line is beyond the horizon.

Speaker Pelosi, if you can’t do your job step down so someone else can.

  13. katie says:

“Mr. Cheney argued that as vice president he is entitled to absolute immunity from suit.”

Do these guys even think about what kind of a precedent they are setting? Do they really want to have a Democratic President or Vice President who has absolute power who can break the law any time they wish without fear of repercussions?

Nancy Pelosi – it is long past time when you should put impeachment on the table. You don’t have to use it right away, but for gods sake, put it on the table. As long as it is off the table these creeps will continue to thumb their noses at congress and at “we the people”.

  14. Patty and her Cakes says:

Use Web Crawler and type in ‘Nevada Land Deal; Reid; Senator’

    or

    ‘Jefferson; Congressman; Frozen Caysh’

  15. Roket says:

Can you imagine how nervous Cheney must be getting about his upcoming battery change? Who will be his replacement while he is under the knife and while recuperating? Perfect time for a power grab. Oops, hope I didn’t give away any secrets. (From Dick that is.)

‘…suggesting an attempt to cover-up what President Bush actually knew before, during and after the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast.

I can sum up what our President knows very quickly…

    See?

  17. Jpark says:

I think we need to cut Cheney’s throat and watch all the spiders crawl out. This guy is so dirty even his socks have a hole right on the heel.

  18. leftcoast says:

I’m completely and sadly disappointed with Pelosi. She has no credibiity at this point.

  19. katie says:

Contact Nancy Pelosi and tell her to do her job or get out of the way for someone who will. Here’s her e-mail address as speaker:

HEY!!!!!! My socks have a hole in the heel. UMMMMM, I mean UMMMMM nothing to see here move along.

  21. katie says:

#14 – is that all you can come up with? Pretty lame. Reid was found to not be “above the law” and Jefferson is under indictment which is fine by us Progressives. We, unlike you Rethugs, want to get rid of the corrupt Democrats. I could list all the corrupt Repthugs, but my fingers would get tired typing.

  22. Patty and her Cakes says:

Or try googling ‘Feinstein; Senator; Hubby’s defense companies; Steering defense contracts.

Before the trolls arrive and derail this discussion, I ask that the intellectually honest members of the TP community make an effort to rid the boards of the likes of Michael and Mr. President, et. al., whose only purpose is to obstruct intelligent conversation of critical issues of the day.

I just sent a note to the site management, and I thought I should share, in case others feel like taking the initiative in trying to reduce the disruptive tactics trolls employ.
    Thanks, Styve

Is there any effort to minimize the disruption of the discussion boards by the numerous trolls that are probably paid to derail conversations??

Michael and Mr. President come to mind as big fish in the troll sea.

Have you ever used the Craigslist discussion forums, and noticed how well community policing works? People can flag disruptive, OT posts and if something is flagged enough, it will be removed. If there are serial violators, their ISP addresses can be blocked, as well.

I would think TP would make an effort to serve its readership better, and this would be a huge step in that direction.

    Thanks,
    Styve

  45. Jeremy says:

Actually, I’d recommend a more slashdot style system, with kudos and flags given for good and bad posts (it’s similar to Daily KOS too). The idea would be that if you had someone who you just disagreed with, you’d be offset by others who might give him kudos to offset the disagreement misflags.

Nothing’s perfect, but honestly, it’d be a better system than what we have now. We have a group of Trolls organizing, brazenly, in the open, using overt disruptive techniques. While playing with them can be fun, I’d love to quash the whole ‘We’re taking over’ mentality.

If you think about it, the Trolls pretty much loose as they come out the gate. TP is news and comment. We get our comment in. They die off because a troll must battle without news of that which does nothing to help their make believe world.

  69. Jeremy says:

Unfortunately, the control rests in the hands of the guys running the show. I don’t know if the blogging software Think Progress uses supports user registration, user rating, and community enforced banning. I suspect that the folks at Think Progress don’t wish to enable those features, or they don’t think it’s a problem. If it’s the latter, only E-Mail from _everyone_ will get their attention. If it’s the former, then the Trolls have already won the technological battle…

  70. Jay says:

“Mr. Cheney argued that as vice president he is entitled to absolute immunity from suit.”

The supreme court ruled that even as President, Bill Clinton was not immune to civil suits. That’s how they were able to get him to give a deposition about Monica Lewinsky, which led to his impeachment. Mr. Cheney is not immune to suits of law.

  71. Mr. President says:

But… but… the trolls told me it was ok…. just like with Iraq: all we have to do is close our eyes, put all our trust in the hands of the Bush administration, and everything will be ok. Just like the rebuilding of New Orleans, the budget deficit, the hunt for Iraq’s WMD, or finding Bin Laden. Or the occupation of Iraq, for that matter.

    Mission accomplished, no?
