Editorials On Pardon: Bush ‘Did Not Sound Like A Leader,’ ‘Sent Terrible Message,’ ‘Indefensible’
Yesterday, President Bush spared Scooter Libby from a 2.5-year prison term, issuing an order that commutes his sentence. Libby will never have to go to jail, but his felony conviction will stand, and he will still serve two years probation and owe $250,000 in fines.
In March, Americans opposed pardoning Libby by a 3 to 1 margin. Today, at least 13 major newspapers editorialized against Bush’s decision, highlighting national disapproval of of the commutation. Some examples:
The New York Times:
Presidents have the power to grant clemency and pardons. But in this case, Mr. Bush did not sound like a leader making tough decisions about justice. He sounded like a man worried about what a former loyalist might say when actually staring into a prison cell. [Link]
The Washington Post:
We agree that a pardon would have been inappropriate and that the prison sentence of 30 months was excessive. But reducing the sentence to no prison time at all, as Mr. Bush did — to probation and a large fine — is not defensible. [Link]
Chicago Tribune:
But in nixing the prison term, Bush sent a terrible message to citizens and to government officials who are expected to serve the public with integrity. The way for a president to discourage the breaking of federal laws is by letting fairly rendered consequences play out, however uncomfortably for everyone involved. [Link]
Dallas Morning News:
Nearly a decade ago, a GOP-led House impeached President Bill Clinton for lying under oath and obstructing justice in a civil deposition. Yesterday, a Republican president commuted the sentence of former top White House staffer Lewis “Scooter” Libby, who was convicted of the same thing in a criminal investigation. Republicans are known for being tough on crime. Apparently there’s an exception when the criminal is a member of President Bush’s inner circle. [Link]

In commuting the sentence of former White House aide Lewis “Scooter” Libby, President Bush sent the message that perjury and obstruction of justice in the service of the president of the United States are not serious crimes. [Link]
Rocky Mountain News, Detroit Free Press, The Denver Post, New York Daily News, The Arizona Republic, Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, and Seattle Post Intelligencer also condemned the President’s decision.

But Marc Rich was a fugitive financier; Clinton did not benefit at all from Rich's crimes. Scooter Libby is a Bush-Cheney operative who may well have been doing Bush and Cheney's bidding when he obstructed the investigation into how and Valerie and Joe Wilson were smeared. I personally don't think Scooter is a psychopath on the order of Cheney and Bush. I believe he lived in an environment where lying and duplicity were practiced daily on the most egregious levels. Living in this environment day in and day out, he had little practical knowledge or experience that there could or might be even one possible iota of repercussion for bold faced lying. Lacking the snakelike skills of a Cheney or Bush he blew it.
That Scooter, the person, should not have to spend years in prison strikes a sympathetic chord with me.
That Scooter, the representative of an administration that adheres to no moral system in the pursuit of power and economic gain, should avoid justice makes me vomit.
I think we should fly all American flags at half staff until these mendacious psychopaths are escorted out of the White House, one way or the other. Better yet perhaps, would be to visit or demonstrate in D.C. and simply leave flags at the White House gates and the Supreme Court building. This, turning in of the flags, will represent that the Red, White and Blue is used only for propaganda by Bush, Cheney and the neocon party and it no longer represents American values. Every editorial I have read this morning has so far condemned Bush's blatent cronyism. The polls show over 70% of Americans disagree with Bush's action.
One of my son's ex-girlfriend's Dad ( who I became good friends with ) is a weapons instructor for new CIA agents. He said the moral of new agents he trains was dealt a serious blow by this. He said he is personally disgusted. Think about it, what kind of confidence would this give to current and future cia operatives that THEIR identity will be protected or used as a political pawn at any time by any crook that happens to be in the White House, with no repercussions at all?
Also Pelosi, again shirks her responsibility to her Oath of Office and is declining to defend the Constitution, by still covering herself in the shroud of "Table Phobia" and refusing to let Impeachment move forward. To me this means she is an accessory and willing participant to the crimes commited by the Bush administration. Her condemnation of the commuting of Libby's sentence means little if she cannot carry out her own constitutional responsibilities.
I think we actually need a clean sweep of everyone currently in office, a total anti-incumbent election in 2008. Democrat Enablers and the Republican Crooks. Kick all of the Bums out.
Replace all the crooks and useless slimeballs that cannot keep the responsibilities that they swear to uphold than they take their oath of office.

Anyway, I don't think that this will be an issue. American voters have a very short span memory. Whether it is good or bad, anything happening today in politics will more likely than not, not matter 18 months from today.
Think about this, during Gulf War I, Bush I was immensly popular, the USA and the world loved him, right? Just a year later he lost an election. Not because of me, but because Perot took away 20% of voters that would have voted for him. People could careless about how resoundley we won Gulf War I and what a great job Bush had done in united the world.
Things this far out from a general election, don't cout. If the electiosn were this November than I would agree with you, but even then, most American have ZERO clue to who Libby is and what the hell commuting a sentence means. Sad statement about our society and our voters, but true.

My 77 year old father and I had pretty much this discussion after golf yesterday. He considers himself a conservative and uses the word liberal like it is a vile brand, so I went down this list with him and on every issue he agreed with the liberal position. We had more on the list, like environment, respect for fellow humans, racism, homophobia....
We disagreed on taxes and social programs, but this "conservative" is at the core a very "liberal" person.
And I think that's the way a lot of Americans are. The Repugnicunts have done a good job of disinformation and getting people to vote against their core values, but the pendulum is swinging our direction.

That's right. I forgot to mention that GMU was ranked the most "diverse" school in country at some point, so I can imagine there's no shortage of PC initiatives being slammed in your face.
I think 2-year schools, while you're there, do a better job of steering clear of the PC stuff than do 4-year schools.
