Rep. Hunter: Ann Coulter Is ‘Approaching That Level Of Being A Great American’
Yesterday on MSNBC’s Hardball, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) defended Ann Coulter’s attacks on John Edwards, including that she wishes he “had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”
He said that Elizabeth Edwards’s calls to stop making “personal attacks” against her family were attempts to “silence conservative voices.” He added that Coulter “is a very articulate spokeswoman for the conservative view” and “closely approaching that level of being a great American.” Watch it:
It’s hard to understand how Hunter justifies calling Coulter a “great American.” She has repeatedly made anti-gay slurs, compared Muslims to members of the Ku Klux Klan, and advocated assassinating President Clinton. These extremely hateful views aren’t what characterize a “great American,” or even the majority of conservatives.

SHARPTON: Do you think that Sen. Edwards’s wife was out of line, or correct in calling her, saying, “Let’s take a lot of the personal attacks out of politics”?
HUNTER: Well, I think what Sen. Edwards’s wife said was very consistent with what lots of Democrats and lots of liberals have said, since the amnesty bill went down in flames, and that is that we need to silence conservative voices, in some cases, of course, those voices are going to be of talk radio, whom the Democrats are particularly focusing on.
In this case, Ann Coulter is a very articulate spokeswoman for the conservative view. And I think the idea that when conservatives talk, they’re considered to talk in a mean way, and yet when Democrats talk, they’re exercising their right to free speech and they’re simply conveying a philosophy. Of course, the whole idea in politics is to marginalize the other guy and make him appear to be extreme.
But I think especially because Ann Coulter said nice things about me, I think she’s closely approaching that level of being a great American, Al.

One of our trolls even has his login linked to her web page, which is how I stumbled upon her column complaining about how Elizabeth Edwards had tried to browbeat her, poor iddle thing. Coulter was bragging about how she'd been invited on Hardball to boost its pitiful ratings, since she's such a media star.

Ann Coulter's idea of witty commentary is to spew playground taunts. Her idea of a scathing argument is to suggest that somebody is homosexual. She has suggested that all Muslims be wiped from the face of the earth and hopes that all liberals join them (just can't stand being on the same planet with us, I guess). And though she can dish it out, she can't take it -- if she finds herself confronted by an irrefutable fact, she will invent a straw man and address her argument there instead. And her justification for everything is "people buy my books". If this is the best conservatives do for a "very articulate spokeswoman for the conservative view", then conservatives are in trouble. Barry Goldwater must be spinning in his grave.
And Elizabeth Edwards? Whether you believe she was acting as a concerned wife and mother or she was executing a carefully planned strategic move by the Edwards camp, you have to admit she was polite, she requested rather than demanded, and she didn't call anyone any names (let alone make any "personal attacks").
Duncan Hunter doesn't have a prayer in the presidential race, but it would certainly add to our comic relief if he stayed in it for awhile!

My wife read this post and couldn't believe that Ann Coulter was mentioned because she despises her rhetorical comments (one of our few disagreements). To me, Ann is a revolutionist. You will not find many activists/advocates that are blunt about political, economical and governmental issues. Ann tells it like it is and if your comments are not factual, she will let you know. She tells the real truth about the Democratic party (immoral pundits that are full of lies). For example Edwards states that he is for the American people yet he continues to receive $300 haircuts. He lives near a trailer park and often passes by the residents, but instead of greeting them, he ignores them. Does that sound like a true Presidential candidate? I think not. He also stated that the title "war on terror" was only meant for political purposes and that is damages are alliances. Well, apparently our alliances are receiving terrorist attacks therefore many want to use our same approach to destroy these international thugs.

Reagan came from Hollywood, but at least people were a lot more excited about his presidential prospects. Thompson's stock is rising, too, despite your desperate smear campaigns. Thanks for sharing your viewpoint. Apparently, you give her far more credit for the use of sarcasm and irony than I do, having seen some of it in context, and listened to clips of her on air. You credit her with being sarcastic in her comment about the First Amendment, but as with everything else she writes about "liberals", it's pretty clear that she really has no interest in debate, or in issues, for that matter.
I think the Right Wing likes her because she gives voice for their darkest, most un-Christian thoughts.

Don't be so sure. Have you read "Armed Madhouse" by Greg Palast? San Diego County's new registrar of voters was a Diebold saleswoman. Her assistant is coming from Ohio. 2008 is lost unless the votes are actually counted. Nevada will decide the presidency.

Hate speech can come from either side of the political spectrum, and so can free speech. Ann Coulter doesn't speak for everyone on the right.
I have never heard anyone in the media claim that Ann's first amendment rights should be taken away from her. I HAVE heard people exercise their first amendment right by saying she spews hate-filled vitriol. But hate-filled vitriol is her entire shtick -- I hardly think she would be offended by such comments.
Here are a few examples of her free speech:

---It was a reference to the fact, yes the fact, that the Left is notoriously secular. Claiming to be religious and then redefining it to fit your (the left's) own worldview is disengenuous. If you ARE religious, then the tenets, for whatever faith you practice, are pretty straight forward. And I haven't seen a religion yet that's compatible with the Liberal worldview.

I have been advocating on-line for years for reform of America's anti-democracy, terrorism funding, crime fostering authoritarian drug war laws. I talk issues, science and public policy. The right-wingers invariably respond with personal attack distractions. Instead of engaging them on their terms I point out that personal attacks are not democratic political discourse but rather the intentional effort to subvert democratic political discourse. Much like Elizabeth Edwards did so successfully. The thugs always run away when they see that I will not be intimidated and that I will stand up for American democratic values.
A good current example of this can be found on the Allwntown, PA Morning Call's editorial thread for 7/2 about a regional drug task force. When the thugs could not intimidate me with personal attacks they were forced to try to address the issue at hand. This was perfect since their rhetorical solutions immediately turned to Draconian sentencing concepts and mass murder. They can't win on the issues. They know that they can't win on the issues. My goal is always to force them to go to the issues. This is because the right-wing, like Coulter and her ilk, have demagogued the left since 1970 without any effective rebutal from the left. The result is that most of the elected Democratic Party in America are right-wingers who run further and further to the right every time the likes of Coulter open this filthy mouths.
This is part of the real purpose and success of the drug war.
Jim Hightower, during the 2004 election cycle, lamented the lack of loud mouthed drunks on the liberal side of the political discourse in America. silencing the left is one of the objectives of the drug war from the day Nixon created it in collusion with the Dixie-crats, (the Blue-dogs and DLC of today).
The 1960-70's American left organized the anti war movement and colluded with the civil rights movement. The pot smoking hippies, college students and radical blacks. These groups became electorally empowered by the Voting Rights Act and the 26st Amendment. The drug war was used successfully then and today to target these groups for oppression and mass disenfranchisement.
So successful is this ploy that most Democrats today use the drug war to look tough on crime but in reality this reduces the left and poverty oppressed advocates allowing Democrats to campaign more to rural white interests and less to urban poor interests. the groups who were to core of the Democratic Party by the mid-1970's.
The fundamental purpose of Nixon's drug war was the revival of Jim Crow and the neutralization of the Voting Rights Act. The 2000 presidential debacle in Florida was the first major demonstration of this hitting critical mass. An election decided by fewer than 1-thousand votes in a state that used classic Jim Crow criminal disenfranchisement to "purge" hundreds of thousands of poor and mostly minority voters from the rolls. In 2004 Kerry lost by 3-million votes nationally when more than 5-million American were that year criminally disenfranchised from the electoral process.
In the (very) mean time the GOP forced the Democrats to adopt the democracy subverting drug war or be demagogued out of politics as "soft on crime". While Reagan's GOP, unmolested, brought the Klan into their big tent.
The Coulter's of today feel safe in their bellicose and overtly violent rhetoric because the only opponents to the GOP today are too scared of her ilk to strike back in kind.
Ku Klux Ann Koulter will have a free stage as long as good Americans stay silent against her.

Bill Maher is not a democrat and certainly does not hold express the views of most progressives. He has some very liberal and very conservative views according to the particular situation. He is a Libertarian who believes in a small limited government that is maintained to provide basic services, like roads. His liberal views are expressed in opposition to this war and the current administration. He skewers the left and the right equally.
