Kristol: Americans ‘Screaming And Yelling’ Over Libby Commutation Are ‘Ridiculous’
On NBC’s Today Show this morning, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol defended President Bush’s decision yesterday to spare former Cheney aide “Scooter” Libby from a 2½-year prison term, saying “this was a courageous decision” because Bush had to deal with “all the screaming and yelling” from Americans opposed to the commutation. “Look at Joe Wilson’s ridiculous comments just now,” added Kristol. “Look at Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the New York Times, the Washington Post…”
Host Meredith Viera cut off Kristol and interjected, “There are many people who feel that this is a travesty of justice. So those who believe that are ridiculous?” “Yeah…I do think it is ridiculous,” responded Kristol. Watch it:
Kristol believes a great majority of Americans are “ridiculous.” According to a poll taken last night by SurveyUSA, 60% of Americans say Bush should have left the judge’s prison sentence in place. Only 32% of Republicans and 20% of Independents said they agree with the president’s decision.
Additionally, Kristol’s defense of the commutation does not hold up to scrutiny. Kristol argued Libby should not serve time in jail “for having a different recollection about a conversation with Tim Russert, which is the only thing he was indicted or convicted on.” Libby was found guilty of obstruction of justice, which special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said is like when “the umpire gets sand thrown in his eyes,” preventing the discovery of why Valerie Plame’s covert identity was leaked.
It wasn’t only “a conversation with Tim Russert” either, as prosecution lawyer Peter Zeidenberg noted in his closing statement. In fact, Libby claimed to have forgotten “nine conversations with eight people over a four-week period,” which the jury simply did not find credible.

Leo Strauss, the father of modern neocon theory, believed that societies should be run by a small elite and that the masses didn’t know what was best for them. In neocon philosophy, the masses are something to be fooled with what Strauss called “noble lies,” because the masses would never agree to what the small elite wanted to accomplish. Neoconservatives have no respect for the American people and no respect for our laws and institutions.

Libby was a direct report to cheney, then to bush. libby lied to keep the illegal behavior of those two – plus many others – out of reach of the GOP appointed spec prosecutor. libby continued to lie to the FBI & grand jury. Your list is impressive in that you can write the english language, but it has noting to do with the present case involving libby. At least one other person noted the numbers don’t add up. The problem is that that while the SurveyUSA poll indicates 60% of the sample favored leaving the sentence as is, the breakdown by partisan affiliation didn’t take into account the third choice of granting a full pardon. Thus, while only 32% of Republicans and 20% of Independents supported the commutation, it does not follow that 68% of Republicans and 80% of Independents supported the judge’s sentence.
My guess is the “pardon” option was totally composed of Republians, dragging down their support for the President’s action.

And to cut off a major loophole, make sure that private donations can’t be used to meet those payrolls, if paychecks are issued, let them come out of W’s & Cheney’s pockets and wallets
While the chief counterargument would be that banning such private donations might be a free-speech violation, since there’s nothing in the Constitution addressing such an issue-that I’m aware of, apologies if wrong-and since Congress hasn’t spelled out how to address such an issue, this current Supreme Court is of the opinion that for something to be valid, every single “i” must be dotted and “t” crossed
That’s exactly why the Court ruled against low-paid health care workers recently, because Congress didn’t address those concerns concretely, concerns which the court held allowed those workers to be treated as they were. If the Administration were to actually try and use such private donations, without that ability being spelled out anywhere, this Court would smack them down
This commutation shows that treachery against our Constitution and our intelligence analysts/covert operatives has a thriving community at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and that actually protecting the US public against another terrorist attack on US soil does not factor one bit into the President’s or Vice President’s decision making, not in the least
But hey, who knows, maybe “commuting” Traitor Libby’s sentence will get that US attorney’s firing fiasco to go away, or the situation in Iraq to suddenly become much more positive, or get the public to rally around warrantless spying on domestic communications
Let’s see if W “has the stomach” to hold a press conference to address why he let Libby off the hook for helping to destroy a career and a vital network of overseas informants and double agents designed to prevent WsMD from falling into the wrong hands

If you want my take on sex offenders, there’s this: when I got married in 1991, the judge who presided (in our home) was the same judge who had gotten a lot of press because she ordered one offender to put a huge warning sign on his front door. Bush made a mess of Iraq, under the leadership of Rumsfeld which is why Rumsfeld had to resign after the democrats (thankfully) took control of Congress. That is also why a member of the Iraq Study Group much scorned by the neo-con cabal (of which Kristol is a member) Robert Gates was put in charge of the Defense Department.
Kristol said that we would be greeted as liberators instead our brave armed forces were greeted as invaders. Other members of this misguided cabal like Wolfowitz (who proved he is as corrupt as they come) said that the war would pay for itself. He was wrong. Gen. Shinseki who said that the war would cost a lot more was fired. Gen. Casey who was against the surge was also replaced. No matter how much the neo-con cabal hates to admit it Libby is a convicted felon. He committed crimes and was found guilty and should have served all 30 months of his sentence.

Like Bush himself, Kristol lives in his own make-believe world, surrounded by lies. This is the same guy who still thinks the Iraq policy he advocated is working out swell. All of these nutjobs — add Wolfwowitz, Pearle and many others to the group — need to be locked away for the good of society before they reduce the earth to a smoldering mass.
