Olbermann: Bush, Cheney should resign.

By Faiz Shakir on Jul 3rd, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Olbermann: Bush, Cheney should resign.

In an extended Special Comment tonight, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann called on President Bush and Vice President Cheney to resign. He concludes his commentary with this:

We of this time–and our leaders in Congress, of both parties–must now live up to those standards which echo through our history: Pressure, negotiate, impeach–get you, Mr. Bush, and Mr. Cheney, two men who are now perilous to our Democracy, away from its helm.

For you, Mr. Bush, and for Mr. Cheney, there is a lesser task. You need merely achieve a very low threshold indeed. Display just that iota of patriotism which Richard Nixon showed, on August 9th, 1974.

Resign.

And give us someone–anyone–about whom all of us might yet be able to quote John Wayne, and say, “I didn’t vote for him, but he’s my president, and I hope he does a good job.”

Huzzah! But there’s no way anyone is prying those weasels out of the White House.

Bah. Olberman is dum! Obermlan is a left wing loonie. Keithie Boy has the lowest-rated show ever on television.

Tomorrow, instead of celebrating the independence of our country, I will mourn for our losses.

Keith Olbermann speaks for me and many other Americans; REAL Americans.

If only this corrupt, spineless administration would listen. Alas, I won’t hold my breath. Bush/Cheney wouldn’t know what the right thing to do is if it smacked them across the face. And for that, we all lose.

His best one yet! Powerful, compelling, and a succinctly rational argument for why neither of those men should be allowed to continue holding their offices. Both of these men violated that trust in immeasureable ways. Both men have earned our contempt and our utter lack of trust in anything they ever tell us again. Neither one can truly say he represents the people of the United States of America.

    Resign!

    Leave!

    And return here nevermore.

  13. David says:

That’s certainly nice, but will it have any effect?

Maybe the last six years (not to mention the elections of 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, and 1988) have made me too pessimistic, but I don’t expect anything to come of this other than a brief feeling of good cheer.

  15. JG says:

Unfortunately, neither of them gives a rip about what is the right thing to do. If they did, they would have left already. What scares me most is that the masks are off. What happens next..?

Read John W. Dean’s fantastic book “Conservatives Without Conscience.” It may provide some insight to your question (even if it was rhetorical). :)

  28. willyloman says:

All but accused him of treason on national television. I love it. Just wish he had gone that extra step.

Without any doubt, the worst President in our history. Even Nixon finally conceded his own hubris and paid a last honor to the Office by resigning.

I agree with Raven though… this President is incapable of that. Cheney has larger plans for the Middle East, and nothing would ever deter him from following thru.

They are trying to strike a deal to keep troops in Iraq indefinately for a slight reduction in the surge. It is insane what they think we will support.

    The media wakes up!

    Keith Olbermann:

I accuse you, Mr. Bush, of lying this country into war.

I accuse you of fabricating in the minds of your own people, a false implied link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11.

I accuse you of firing the generals who told you that the plans for Iraq were disastrously insufficient.

I accuse you of causing in Iraq the needless deaths of 3,586 of our brothers and sons, and sisters and daughters, and friends and neighbors.

I accuse you of subverting the Constitution, not in some misguided but sincerely-motivated struggle to combat terrorists, but to stifle dissent.

I accuse you of fomenting fear among your own people, of creating the very terror you claim to have fought.

I accuse you of exploiting that unreasoning fear, the natural fear of your own people who just want to live their lives in peace, as a political tool to slander your critics and libel your opponents.

I accuse you of handing part of this Republic over to a Vice President who is without conscience, and letting him run roughshod over it.

And I accuse you now, Mr. Bush, of giving, through that Vice President, carte blanche to Mr. Libby, to help defame Ambassador Joseph Wilson by any means necessary, to lie to Grand Juries and Special Counsel and before a court, in order to protect the mechanisms and particulars of that defamation, with your guarantee that Libby would never see prison, and, in so doing, as Ambassador Wilson himself phrased it here last night, of becoming an accessory to the obstruction of justice.

In actuality, it’s time for Keith to move to Network, with his Special Comment featured at the conclusion of Brian Williams’ NBC Nightly News.

Demand an opinion out of Brian Williams regarding Keith’s comment tonight. Demand an opinion of EVERY talking head on television.

    Force them to choose sides.

  39. ann says:

Priceless was his look of utter disgust at the end of the commentary. He sounded also as if he was choking back a great wad of spit. Also, would like to add, after seeing him tonight on Countdown and at press conferences, why doesn’t David Shuster have his own show at MSNBC? Atrios asked the question, and I hope it grows legs….and emails and emails and phone calls. Olbermann will be rewarded by history, not that slug, gwb, who wouldn’t make a pimple on Keith’s ass.

“Most people prefer to believe that their leaders are just and fair, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen acknowledges that the government under which he lives is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one’s self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all.”

Did you know that the word “quiz” was invented on a bet? True story. One guy told a friend that he could get people to start using a new word overnight. His friend challenged him. The guy started writing the word “quiz” all over the place, and the next day people were asking “What’s a ‘quiz’?” Then it came to be known as a test. Probably, but I doubt they’ll let Keith go. I think they were on board with this comment. Did you see Dan Abrams hosting Scarborough right after? He too crucified Bush.

I think pretty much all of the news is feeling this way. Look at the White House press staff. People have had enough, and if Congress and Pelosi won’t get the job done, maybe the media can.

I think Keith is changing the tone of all MSNBC shows and all their rating are going up because of it. Even Tucker Carlson is less rabid then he used to be and Scarborough is more reasonable on that morning show replacing Imus. Olbermann is to MSNBC what Letterman is to CBS, bread and butter.

    HITLER

    The Reichstag Burns

Adolf Hitler, the new Chancellor of Germany, had no intention of abiding by the rules of democracy. He intended only to use those rules to legally establish himself as dictator as quickly as possible then begin the Nazi revolution.

Even before he was sworn in, he was at work to accomplish that goal by demanding new elections. While Hindenburg waited impatiently in another room, Hitler argued with conservative leader Hugenberg, who vehemently opposed the idea. Hitler’s plan was to establish a majority of elected Nazis in the Reichstag which would become a rubber stamp, passing whatever laws he desired while making it all perfectly legal.

Hitler’s storm troopers were about to reach new heights of power of their own and begin a reign of terror.

President Hindenburg had fallen under Hitler’s spell and was signing just about anything put in front of him. He signed an emergency decree that put the German state of Prussia into the hands of Hitler confidant, Vice Chancellor Papen. Göring as Minister of the Interior for Prussia took control of the police. Prussia was Germany’s biggest and most important state and included the capital of Berlin.

Göring immediately replaced hundreds of police officials loyal to the republic with Nazi officials loyal to Hitler. He also ordered the police not to interfere with the SA and SS under any circumstances. This meant that anybody being harassed, beaten, or even murdered by Nazis, had nobody to turn to for help.

    About NUKING Iran:

    “August 1, 2005 Issue

    Deep Background

In Washington it is hardly a secret that the same people in and around the administration who brought you Iraq are preparing to do the same for Iran. The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option. As in the case of Iraq, the response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States. Several senior Air Force officers involved in the planning are reportedly appalled at the implications of what they are doing–that Iran is being set up for an unprovoked nuclear attack–but no one is prepared to damage his career by posing any objections.”

Controlling Reality – And The World

PENTAGON PSYOPS – ANOTHER ILLEGAL PROGRAM

    “Information Operations Roadmap”

Perhaps the most startling aspect of the roadmap is its acknowledgement that information put out as part of the military’s psychological operations, or Psyops, is finding its way onto the computer and television screens of ordinary Americans.

“Information intended for foreign audiences, including public diplomacy and Psyops, is increasingly consumed by our domestic audience,” it reads.

“Psyops messages will often be replayed by the news media for much larger audiences, including the American public,” it goes on.

The document’s authors acknowledge that American news media should not unwittingly broadcast military propaganda. “Specific boundaries should be established,” they write. But they don’t seem to explain how.

“In this day and age it is impossible to prevent stories that are fed abroad as part of psychological operations propaganda from blowing back into the United States – even though they were directed abroad,” says Kristin Adair of the National Security Archive.

It recommends that a global website be established that supports America’s strategic objectives. But no American diplomats here, thank you. The website would use content from “third parties with greater credibility to foreign audiences than US officials”.

    ‘Fight the net’

When it describes plans for electronic warfare, or EW, the document takes on an extraordinary tone.

It seems to see the internet as being equivalent to an enemy weapons system.

“Strategy should be based on the premise that the Department [of Defense] will ‘fight the net’ as it would an enemy weapons system,” it reads.

The slogan “fight the net” appears several times throughout the roadmap.

And, in a grand finale, the document recommends that the United States should seek the ability to “provide maximum control of the entire electromagnetic spectrum”.

US forces should be able to “disrupt or destroy the full spectrum of globally emerging communications systems, sensors, and weapons systems dependent on the electromagnetic spectrum”.

    Consider that for a moment.

The US military seeks the capability to knock out every telephone, every networked computer, every radar system on the planet.

Are these plans the pipe dreams of self-aggrandising bureaucrats? Or are they real?

The fact that the “Information Operations Roadmap” is approved by the Secretary of Defense suggests that these plans are taken very seriously indeed in the Pentagon.

And that the scale and grandeur of the digital revolution is matched only by the US military’s ambitions for it.

“The media center in Fayetteville, N.C., would be the envy of any global communications company …

“The center is not part of a news organization, but a military operation, and those writers and producers are soldiers. The 1,200-strong psychological operations unit based at Fort Bragg turns out what its officers call “truthful messages” to support the United States government’s objectives, though its commander acknowledges that those stories are one-sided and their American sponsorship is hidden.

“We call our stuff information and the enemy’s propaganda,” said Col. Jack N. Summe, then the commander of the Fourth Psychological Operations Group, during a tour in June. Even in the Pentagon, “some public affairs professionals see us unfavorably,” and inaccurately, he said, as “lying, dirty tricksters.”

It suggests to me that the Congress shall decide in what manner the powers of the government are to be carried out. They certainly can, and often have, delegated some of the rule-making authority to the Executive Branch, but that does not mean that they do not have total say over how the entire government functions under our constitution.

And the Congress has set some very specific rules about how the president is to exercise the constitutionally-granted authority to “grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” Unless the Congress has decided that the president shall decide the criteria and procedures for granting ths power (they haven’t), he must follow those rules. And those rules reqwuire that certain consultations take place (which didn’t), and that the person have begun serving his prison sentence (he didn’t), and the appeals process is allowed to run its course (it hasn’t).

This one act alone is a clear violation of his oath of office and of the clause that requires that “he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.”

For the good of the nation, both he and his co-president must resign.

Lewinsky herself said that in March 1997, when she was with the president in his office, he told her he suspected that a foreign embassy had been tapping his line.

It’s going to be hard, however, to make Monica Lewinsky’s testimony that President Bill Clinton warned her that a foreign embassy was listening to their telephone sex go permanently down the memory hole. This is particularly true after the whole sordid Monica story hit the U.S. media fan just hours after then-Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu arrived in the U.S. national capital vowing “to set Washington on fire” back in 1998.

Now we know where he got the matches.

Spies Tap Police and Government Phones

In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, the FBI has stumbled on the largest espionage ring ever discovered inside the United States. The U.S. Justice Department is now holding nearly 100 Israeli citizens with direct ties to foreign military, criminal and intelligence services.

The spy ring reportedly includes employees of two Israeli-owned companies that currently perform almost all the official wiretaps for U.S. local, state and federal law enforcement.

The U.S. law enforcement wiretaps, authorized by the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), appear to have been breached by organized crime units working inside Israel and the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad.

Clearly the president has chosen to put his own welfare and the welfare of his vice president and the GOP before the rule of law, equal justice and the will of the American people. This president has stubbornly refused to listen to the will of the American people when it came to key issues like the Iraq war. He has done so again by showing his utter disregard for the verdicts given by a jury of Mr. Libby’s peers and the sentence imposed by a judge he himself appointed to the bench. In time this president will show how far he is willing to go to ignore the American people, Congress and the courts when he gives Mr. Libby a full pardon.

Mr. Olbermann speaks for a majority of Americans. He tells the truth and he respects the Constitution which unfortunately this administration does not. His well written and well spoken words tell the American people what this administration should be doing instead of what it continues to do. Truly this president does not respect the views of the American people. President Bush truly governs like a party loyalist than an American president. The party must never come before the country. The country must always come before the party.

    Comment by Jessie Saxton — July 3, 2007 @ 11:32 pm

With all due respect, I don’t completely accept this statement. First you speak of “the average American”, then you speak of “the voting public” as they represent the same set of people. Not all Americans vote, so that 51% of which you speak is not of the country as a whole, but probably only about 30% of it. (Based on roughly 60% turnout; I don’t have exact figures. Multiply your 51% by the %-turnout to get what you would consider support for him.)

And as for “especially since they did nothing wrong”, I expect that from the Acerebralists™ who regularly visit here (some under multiple names.)

    Comment by Wayne’s Acerebralistâ„¢ Ego — July 4, 2007 @ 12:22 am

Okay, in the first place, it’s “your time”, not “you’re time”. “You’re” is a contraction of the words “you are”. Since you didn’t mean to say “You are time”, that’s a good hint that the one you want is “your” in that case. Good to know information. Just trying to help you.

And what is so inane about asking if you truly believe that Bush and Cheney have committed no crimes? Have you only just recently (say, the last few hours) started paying attention to what these people have been doing all along? I mean, c’mon. To come to a progressive (self-identified, despite what Rush Limbaugh says) and expect people to believe that statement?

Earlier this month the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty handed state lawmakers its assessment of the state’s application of the death penalty, plus a string of suggestions – including the creation of a statewide public defender’s office – to reform Texas’ brand of capital punishment. Indeed, “errors” in the system have led to wrongful convictions and executions, reads the report, making it “necessary to take action” to reform the criminal-justice system and, “eventually to abolish capital punishment in the state of Texas.” The odds of that ever happening, of course, are slim to none. But the report makes clear that human error has dire consequences. Lawmakers should take action to ensure that the system is as free as possible from devastating “mortal mistakes” – including unreliable eyewitness testimony (as in the cases of executed inmates Gary Graham and Carlos DeLuna), reliance on junk science (as in the arson-murder case of executed inmate Cameron Willingham), and flawed psychological evidence offered by dubious experts (like Dr. James Grigson, aka Dr. Death, who was twice reprimanded by the American Psychiatric Association before being expelled from its membership in 1995)

He lied! He was convicted by a jury, two different judges agreed with the verdict.

It goes deeper than what I have been reading…
Since the president enforced his ruling, why do we need courts?

Courts, judges, lawyers, rule of law, are meaningless!

What Keith put forth, was a argument that MAKES sense! And at a time where sense is lacking, the argument is full of honest words and time lines that are quite refreshing to the soul!

Keith has spoken the words that so many feel, right down to the tips of our toes!

Keith compared and contrasted his argument on historical facts, they happened in the past, and its being repeated!

The crimes are still being investigated. Sometimes the criminals lie and obstruct justice, see Scooter Libby (crime in itself). Unfortunately we cannot give you all the details yet, because that is the way the system works. Now that Dubya and Cheney have short circuited the system, we may be able to gather the evidence for the international war crimes tribunals in the Hague after they leave office. They can run but they cannot hide.

  453. m12 says:

Alexander Hamilton would never have listened to you idiots!

As the sense of responsibility is always strongest, in proportion as it is undivided, it may be inferred that a single man would be most ready to attend to the force of those motives which might plead for a mitigation of the rigor of the law, and least apt to yield to considerations which were calculated to shelter a fit object of its vengeance. The reflection that the fate of a fellow-creature depended on his sole fiat, would naturally inspire scrupulousness and caution; the dread of being accused of weakness or connivance, would beget equal circumspection, though of a different kind. On the other hand, as men generally derive confidence from their numbers, they might often encourage each other in an act of obduracy, and might be less sensible to the apprehension of suspicion or censure for an injudicious or affected clemency. On these accounts, one man appears to be a more eligible dispenser of the mercy of government, than a body of men.

  454. Jessie Saxton says:

“The crimes are still being investigated. Sometimes the criminals lie and obstruct justice, see Scooter Libby (crime in itself). Unfortunately we cannot give you all the details yet, because that is the way the system works.”
