A recent Washington Post exposé on Dick Cheney revealed that the vice president often gives secret guidance to President Bush that frequently dictates the president’s final decision on key issues.
This morning on CNN, Joe Wilson said the Post series was an affirmation of Cheney’s negative influence throughout the administration. “I see the fine hand of Dick Cheney everywhere. I admit my bias on that,” he said. “But of course I read ‘The Washington Post’ four-part series last week, and I’ve seen the hand of the vice president in the trail of the covert identity of a CIA officer, as have the rest of the world now.”
At this afternoon’s White House press conference, reporters peppered Tony Snow with questions about Cheney’s possible involvement in the pardon, which Snow refused to answer. “Did the vice president weigh in?” one reporter asked. “I’m sure that everybody had an opportunity to share their views,” Snow replied, failing to note that Bush issued his decision without much consultation.
Later, Snow waffled on Cheney’s involvement, stating on the one hand, “I’m sure that the vice president may have expressed an opinion,” but then backtracking. “He may have recused himself. I honestly don’t know.” Watch it:
One reporter asked Snow if he is aware of any plans Vice President Cheney may have to bring Scooter Libby back into his office. “I don’t have any idea. This is not something that’s come up,” Snow responded.
UPDATE: Raw Story has more.
Transcript:
QUESTION: Did the vice president weigh in?
SNOW: My guess is that — I don’t have direct knowledge. But on the other hand, the president did consult with most senior officials, and I’m sure that everybody had an opportunity to share their views.
[...]
QUESTION: Was it appropriate for the vice president to weigh in about the fate of his own friend and someone who had served him for years?
SNOW: I — you know, I’m sure that the vice president may have expressed an opinion. But the fact is, the president understands the — he may have recused himself. I honestly don’t know.
QUESTION: Did he ask for the president to spare his friend?
SNOW: We never, as you know, talk about internal deliberations. Nice try. I mean, this is exactly what we’re talking about right now before the House and Senate. And we are not going to characterize specifically any kind of advice or plea that somebody may make.
QUESTION: Doesn’t the public deserve to know if the vice president asked the president to use this constitutional authority to spare his former aide and longtime friend from prison?
SNOW: Well, let me put it this way: The president does not look upon this as granting a favor to anyone, and to do that is to misconstrue the nature of the deliberations
[...]
QUESTION: There are some on the right who are very interested in the idea of a full pardon, and they are pointing out that a convicted felon can serve in the government. If Vice President Cheney wants to bring Scooter Libby back into his office…
SNOW: I don’t have any idea. This is not something that’s come up.
But but but….Clinton…

U.S. Kills 23 Insurgents in Anbar battle
military.com ^ | July 3, 2007 | Agence France Press
U.S. and Iraqi forces waged a two-day battle against insurgents south of the former insurgent bastion of Ramadi, killing 23 alleged militants, the military said on Tuesday.
The battle began on Saturday night when two truckloads of gunmen opened fire on a U.S. position near Donkey Island on the Euphrates River in the restive western province of Anbar.
U.S. forces returned fire and, supported with aircraft, pursued the gunmen into the night.
“Helicopters killed at least one insurgent and wounded another, and destroyed the two trucks, later determined to be loaded with weapons, ammunition and explosives,” a military statement said.
At the height of the battle an Apache attack helicopter was ordered to evacuate a critically wounded Soldier, a separate statement said.
A co-pilot “helped load the injured Soldier into the front seat without further injury,” it said.
“Despite the heavy small arms fire and surface-to-air fire events in the area, the co-pilot/gunner strapped himself on to the left side of the aircraft and hunkered down on the wing” outside the narrow fuselage.
The Soldier was flown to a nearby U.S. base — in what a U.S. marines spokesman described as “an amazing act of heroism” — and is now in stable condition, the statement said.
Troops searching the area on Sunday morning discovered 22 dead insurgents, including seven wearing suicide vests, as well as 24 homemade grenades, 20 roadside bombs, and other weapons.
“Most of the enemy were dressed in similar white dishdashas (ankle-length shirts) and white running shoes, an outfit often associated with extremist fighters prepared to kill themselves,” the statement said.
Clashes erupted again on Sunday afternoon, when insurgents attacked U.S.-led forces with machine gun fire, grenades and a suicide vest.
Another insurgent was killed and two were detained in the ensuing battle as helicopters and fighter jets were scrambled to destroy an alleged bunker with precision-guided bombs.
The security situation in Anbar, once the epicentre of the country’s Sunni insurgency, has been improving in recent months as local tribes have joined with U.S. and Iraqi forces to fight Al-Qaeda in Iraq.
Ahead of Saturday’s battle U.S.-led forces had “received reports that a significant number of anti-Iraqi forces had gathered on the outskirts of Ramadi to stage a series of large scale attacks,” the statement said.
In October last year Al-Qaeda declared Ramadi to be the capital of an “Islamic State of Iraq”, but since then it has seen its support collapse among the local population as tribal chiefs switch allegiances.
Now, the city itself is largely in the hands of U.S.-alled Iraqi tribal and government forces, although commanders remain wary of a counterattack.

July 3rd, 2007 at 3:09 pmGood afternoon.
It is my duty to inform you that everything I will henceforth utter is not to be believed.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:09 pmToday the Excrement has decreed that from this moment onward he is to be considered on a par with God, and that not only is he above the law, but he is to be considered as the embodiment of the law.
Anything he says (as long as it has been pre-approved by Karl or Dick)
is to be accepted without question.
His first decree is that the Capitol of the United States is to be relocated to Crawford, Texas, and that his Excremental Library and College of Troll Education will be built in Fritch, Texas.
Dick n’ Bush didn’t want Libby to go to bed thinking he may remember some of the conversations he had with the VP so they pulled this commuting out. Thicker than thieves.
History will not be kind to the Bush administration and all of it’s henchmen.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:11 pmGeorge H. W. Bush called those who leak the names of CIA operatives “the most insidious of traitors.”

“If anyone in this administration was involved in it, they would no longer be in this administration.”

Iraqi Cabinet Approves Updated Oil Law – Or Not
So Iraq’s controversial oil law draws ever closer. Earlier today, AP, Reuters and now Aljazeera reported that Iraq’s cabinet approved changes to the law and will now submit the bill to parliament.
Meanwhile
Our guess here is that there is confusion between the revenue sharing law and the foreign investment / oil law. This confusion has been deliberately sown by the Bush administration and the Iraqi government, who have consistently sought to portray the foreign investment/oil law as a revenue sharing law – when in fact revenue sharing is a separate piece of legislation.

July 3rd, 2007 at 3:18 pmAs if talk of pardoning a traitor doesn’t sound good.
Here’s some more good news from Iraq-
Government said to have lost control of Basra: As U.S. troops battle to retake Baghdad and surrounding areas, the government is reported to have lost its control of Basra where almost all of the country’s oil exports originate.
Five U.S.occupation troops killed in Iraq: – Four U.S. soldiers and one Marine were killed in various attacks in Iraq on Sunday, the U.S. military said on Monday.
Iraq condemns U.S. raid; 26 Iraqis killed: Residents, police and hospital officials said eight civilians were killed in their homes and angrily accused U.S. forces of firing blindly on the innocent.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:20 pmWhile serving the 2000 Bush Campaign to select a running mate, Cheney must have been exposed to enough information on George W. Bush that he is armed to critically damage not only his political but also his personal life. How else could any sentient being allow themselves to be so completely manipulated by such a sinister character as Cheney.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:21 pmLet him dig himself deeper. Snow can share a cell with them.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:24 pmBush will pardon Libby soon as he illegally gave him the commuted sentence. As Americans have lost the Dept. of Justice and the Supreme Court for laws of the Constitution Libby will return to the White House. One position that’s open for a lawyer is the Assistant Deputy Attorney General. Libby could then do the job that Gonzales can’t, plus the White House knows he’s will to lie for the crimes committed by the Bush Administration. Yes Americans celebrate the Independence on this 4th of July but are clueless to the fact this country has a Dictator worse the Saddam.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:25 pmIt’s more important that Americans watch Paris Hilton, Brad/Angie and Deal or No Deal. At lease Putin knows he can now step in the world leadership rule as the US is so weak we have a drunken idiot as President. North Korean President is laughing at the US right now and rightly so.
While serving the 2000 Bush Campaign to select a running mate, Cheney must have been exposed to enough information on George W. Cheney has been “working” this for a long time, he was Gerald Ford’s Chief of Staff, and we can be assured he played a part in the pardoning of Nixon and his henchman, allowing several of them to scurry under the floorboards, where they have been gnawing and festering all these years.
And, oh, as far as GW Bush being sentient, the jury is still out on that one…

July 3rd, 2007 at 4:00 pmTypical Arrogant Lefty.
I promised a couple of TPers (Briseadh, Trekkie) that I would post the results of my research and verification of their challenge to my assertion that the AUMF/Iraq “War†Authorization of 2002 was “revocable†by a simple majority vote in congress and could not be vetoed by the president.
After reviewing the challenges and contacting a number of congressional offices, I agree that I was, in fact, wrong. The most concise explanation is as follows:
As the authorization was instituted via Law, then to reverse that law would require the same process as for any bill, ie; pass through both houses of congress, combined in committee, and submitted to the president for signature or veto.
The reason it has to be this way, however, is what was not known (nor mentioned/known by the TPers who challenged) is that the AUMF/Iraq “War†Authorization of 2002 supersedes and, in effect, renders moot the War Powers Act of 1973. You may want to read that twice.
Besides the technical references within the AUMF itself, there is judicial precedence on this (Briseadh will need to shed light on the actual term and legal terminology as I am not a lawyer or constitutional scholar) regarding when two laws are in contradiction, the usual deferral is to the more recent law, ie; the more current law prevails.
As such, by definition within the AUMF itself and since the AUMF/Iraq “War†Authorization of 2002 is the prevalent law, the War Powers Resolution of 1973 no longer applies to the Middle East or any country, enemy, or cause that the Executive determines to be related to terrorism. If you thought that Bush would require an act of congress to engage Iran, or Syria, or North Korea, you can lay that thought to rest, the answer is “noâ€.
I will, of course, honor my challenge. For Briseadh a donation to the Gold Star Families cause and Trekkie will have to let me know where to send his.
This is the worst news imaginable. When combined with the abandonment of Habeas Corpus and the entire judicial system as displayed by yesterdays “commutingâ€, I believe that we have reached the end, as I stated yesterday.
I will check the posts today and tomorrow, 7/4, for Trekkie’s response. Other than that, as I said yesterday, I leave you to your own devices.
July 3rd, 2007 at 4:00 pmAre you going to add something to this discussion or just spam it? Get a life, moron.
July 3rd, 2007 at 4:01 pmFed, have you been reading the posts here? It’s devolved into the stupidest discussion I’ve ever seen. The standard defense by the trolls is “typical blah blah blah”.

Grant at his most drunken state has nothing on Bush. Nixon at his most corrupt has nothing on Bush. Jackson at his most stubborn has nothing on Bush. Johnson (both!) were squeaky clean compared to Bush.
Bush has set the presidency back so far it’s going to take a long time to undo. The sad part is, he’ll smirk his way right on out of the White House, and get away with it. That little sh*t should be impeached, removed from office, and sent to prison, but you know it’ll never happen. They (Bush, Cheney, Rove, etc.) truly believe they are above the law, and there’s still enough dead-from-the-neck-up hillbillies, resident nazi’s, and hypochristians who support everything Bush says and does.

So why in the hell does the do-nothing congress (republicans, democrats and those who don’t know what they are) sit on their hands and write letters (nice polite requests to respond to those burning questions such as “Why did you ignore the law?”), then are afraid to follow up with any subpoenas or arrests. But they do show up in their best clothes and haircuts on the TV shows in outraged, self-righteous poses.
So why in the hell does the average american citizen follow the same lack of activity as congress. Is is too much trouble, do they not understand what’s going on or the consequences, are they too stupid or lulled into apathy by drugs or crappy education???

Why would you care about an old hag, you’re just another closeted gay Republican – remember? Or are you still in that drug stupor. No wonder you wingnuts couldn’t stand the thought of Clinton having an affair with a woman – you only have affairs with men and little boys – right wingnut? st*pid little f*cker.

July 3rd, 2007 at 6:35 pmThe answer the nation seeks, without knowing, to amend the grievous crimes, felt but unspoken, is an answer not political, but violent. Sometimes, the pen must be put away and the red sword of justice wielded for . . .
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
— Thomas Jefferson
Let the tree’s thirst be quenched entirely. Let it drink deepest the blood of tyrants. Let the blood flow in a cleansing river.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:48 pmSo, Bush agreed with the verdict, but not the sentence. That’s what he said in his statement. What this means is that Bush believes people in his administration who commit felonies do not have to go to jail.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:49 pmI see a lot of posts about blood and hanging. I don’t think we’ve reached the point where we need to resort to the “French Solution.” I’d like to point out that a supermajority for Dems in both houses and a Democratic president would effectively in the shortest amount of time reverse and turn back virtually all of the damage done by these neocons over the last 6 years. There’s even talk of revisiting Clinton’s biggest mistake – buying the bait and switch scam known as “globalization” – with a new emphasis on tariffs and protections for American labor.
No matter how daunting the task may appear at this time, We the People still have the power. Bush and his cronies will be turned out. They may face a barrage of criminal proceedings after they’re done. Some of them will undoubtedly not be able to set foot in certain countries, much the same as Pinochet couldn’t in the later years of his life. The jury of constitutional scholars and historians is in, and they will be known as the most lawless and criminal administration in history. Bush is already recognized by over 70% of American historians as easily the worst president in U.S. history. Ten years from now, it will be like Nixon – very few people will admit to having supported him.
The silver lining in all of this is that Americans may be tired of this modern conservative movement and the mainstream media which has enabled their crimes. Television journalists and pundits currently enjoy lower approval ratings than lawyers. We may have been innoculated against their bullshit. Next year, when they again try to convince us that the Repub running for president is a “good guy” and the Dem is a creep, we may respond with a collective “whatever, we know what YOU think and we see you working…”
I still have hope.

Traitorous: Whitehouse lies to start war.
July 3rd, 2007 at 9:43 pmPatriotic: Wilson exposes Whitehouse lies.
Traitorous: Whitehouse exposes Wilson’s wife as undercover CIA agent.
Traitorous: Libby refuses to say who in Whitehouse exposed Wilson’s wife.
Patriotic: Court gives 30 month sentence to Libby.
Traitorous: Whitehouse commute’s Libby’s sentence.
Patriotic: Democrats and Republicans impeach Bush and Cheney.
Pardons and sentence commutations are not uncommon for most presidents. But the president should have stayed out of this case due to a direct conflict of interest. This instance is unique because the president commuted the sentence of someone who is a former staffer. Libby a convicted felon, was a White House insider. He was one of the architects or advocates of the Iraq war in the run up to the war.
The utter disregard for the rule of law and our justice system is both astonishing in one respect but it is also not surprising considering the track record of this administration. While Congress can’t undo the president’s actions, they can now investigate Plamegate, hold hearings on what role key members of the administration played in the outing of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame.

I agree, he should never have pardoned Susan McDougal, who went to jail to protect the president.
This instance is unique because the president commuted the sentence of someone who is a former staffer.
Even more unique is pardoning terrorists, fugitives, cronies and others, all because they could provide votes, campaign contributions, or were former business associates.
Of course, THAT doesn’t bother you. But Scooter Libby, well now, that’s a REALLY bad pardon.
The utter disregard for the rule of law and our justice system is both astonishing in one respect but it is also not surprising considering the track record of this administration.
Couldn’t agree more. The guy was a liar from the word go–from “I didn’t inhale” all the way to “I didn’t have sex with that woman”– the guy couldn’t tell the truth to save his life. The funny part is how the left pretends that’s the only lie he ever told, because it’s the only one he ever got convicted on. The guy was a serial liar and rogue, and the passage of time seems to have dimmed your memories.
Never mind the abuses of power when he was in office, including pilfering FBI files on Republicans, using the IRS to attack opponents, firing all 93 attorneys (that’s more than eight, right?), firing the Travel office employees, Waco, selling missile technology to the Chinese in return for campaign donations, and on and on and on.
And the freakin guy was a serial sexual assaulter, and probably a rapist as well. You can shriek and scream about Bush all you want, but nothing he’s done could ever match the crimes perpetrated by that pervert.
I can only imagine the fits on this forum if George Bush were even accused of brushing up against a woman–never mind rape. Rather than IGNORE the story, as the despicable media ignored Clinton’s assaults (and continues to ignore them) — the media would talk about nothing else if Bush were accused of anything remotely similar.
While Congress can’t undo the president’s actions, they can now investigate Plamegate, hold hearings on what role key members of the administration played in the outing of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame.
Funny we never near the name of “Richard Armitage”–you know, the official leaker–iever mentioned by the insane left. Now why would that be?
As for investigating the Plame affair, yes, let’s. Let’s get that proven liar Joe Wilson and his equally lying, non-covert wife on the stand. The bipartisan 9/11 report noted him to be a absolute confirmed liar, and he should answer for his lies. And so should she, for sending that lying sack of shit to Niger in the first place, and then lying about it.
Yes, it’s time to get those pompous pieces of shit on the stand.

July 4th, 2007 at 5:50 amwell, it’s best to look on the bright side–
July 4th, 2007 at 6:27 amat least he didn’t reinstate Libby with an enhanced security clearance.
hahahaha
libby will be dragged back into court.
and the judge is driving to have bush’s council present to explain how the current prescription of law fit’s the president’s worldview.
this is going to be funny, cause that’s when fitz get to pose the question, in open public forum – cameras rolling, limelite blazing – isn’t this a conflict of interest for the president’s office to commute this individual?
get out the popcorn, cheney just burned the house of cards.
July 4th, 2007 at 11:01 amYou can always trust Tony Snow to play his role as enabler and apologist to a T.
July 4th, 2007 at 12:50 pmYou people on the left are so predictable. You wish death on anyone that doesn’t agree with you. If any of you tards could read, you would know that Clinton took bribes and released over 400 criminals. What Bush did was the right thing to do.
July 4th, 2007 at 1:11 pmF*ck you, anti-leftard, and happy 4th. Typical “Clinton did it” whiner. You show us where Clinton (who I’m no great fan of) committed obstruction of justice in a matter of wartime treason. Bring out the documents, shitbird. As for wishing death, I’ve been coming here for years and I wish I had just a dollar for every reichwing scumbag who came on here threatening prisons, concentration camps, torture and execution for everyone who wasn’t a brainwashed pod-person. You’re the kind of guy who would cheer his kid if he made the big play at the Saturday game by elbowing his opponent in the teeth. I’ll bet your just one hell of a credit to your community.
July 4th, 2007 at 4:35 pmHey shit for breath (marlow) who said I was a guy, once again you leftwing retards make an assumtion and call it fact. You should all just stop talking and stop proving me right all the time, just once I’d like to wrong about you, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
