I have never seen so much body language indicating lying as Bush did during his explanation of commuting Libby's sentence. The amount of excessive blinking was incredible. This was B.S. even he clearly didn't believe.

Why do the trollies keep throwing the Marc Rich pardon at us? As if we supported it? As if it somehow forgives Libby? When you know you're wrong, change the subject.

Moderation, Bill Clinton pardoned Susan McDougal, who many people say he had an extramarital affiar with.

Comment by Jessie Saxon — July 3, 2007 @ 6:27 pm

And? What, you think I condone any malfeasance Bill Clinton, or any other President may have been party to? And that's justification for a continued flouting of the laws of the land, how? Oh, that's right. It's NOT!

Two wrongs do not make a right. Even my four-year old understands that concept.

That’s what you said in 2004 remember?

Comment by Flaco — July 3, 2007 @ 4:39 pm

Wow, you know what I said in 2004, before I ever started posting on TP? Somehow you also know that I'm a Democrat, even though I've never been registered as anything but an Independent, and have voted for Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians AND Green Party candidates, at the local, state and national level? What an astounding ability!!! I've never known anyone so able to completely misread others, as though they don't know what the other person is thinking. What skill! What grace! What a load.

Yes, I am currently disgusted beyond explanation with the Republicans. That party has been usurped by a group that does not have a conservative agenda in any way, shape or form. If Barry Goldwater were around today, I'd vote for him. The Goldwater conservatives are a dying (or possibly extinct breed) in Washington DC. Lincoln would grab a pistol, and shoot the current crop of Republicans dead for treason, treachery, and the trampling of all the the Republican party stood for for most of its existence.

I also just so happen to be disgusted by the lack of spine, and lack of will the Democrats are currently displaying. However, from a practical perspective, the Democrats are currently, by FAR, the lesser of two evils. Funny thing, that. The moment the Dixie-crats moved from the Democratic party to the Republican party, the Democratic party began to improve, and the Republican party began to diminish. Hmm. Maybe it has nothing to do with the Dems and Repubs? Perhaps it has more to do with the corrupting influence of the fundamentalists that also just so happen to be completely beholden to the mighty dollar? Perhaps THAT is the influence that needs to be eliminated from Washington?

What's that, Flaco? Speak up. It's kind of hard to hear you through the seat of your pants.

Why do you think Bush would do anything different? Its a no lose for him. His base loves it and those who don't weren't going to vote for him or his party anyway.

No lose situation politically.

Yet, you think that the Republicans will take back the Congress, and KEEP the Presidency come 2009? You are delusional.

Clinton pardoned and commuted the sentences of 400 people.

Comment by Flaco — July 3, 2007 @ 2:28 pm

Yeah, because that information tells the whole story, doesn't it. Oh, wait, it doesn't? What, you mean Clinton only falls in the halfway mark of sheer number of presidential pardons. No...f*cking...way. I never would have known that had I not bothered to actually look it up myself.

Would you like actual lists of all of the people that each individual president pardoned and commuted? Well, except for Ronald Reagan's pardons, since there is no public record of Reagan's pardon, whatsoever. Even ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S pardons are on microfilm, along with basically every president in the U.S besides Reagan, and those for whom the records were lost to near-antiquity. Certainly no other modern President has their list of pardon's kept secret from the public.

Honestly, if the modern Republican party were any more corrupt, their extremities would fall off from gangrene.

Regardless, pulling pointless numbers out of your behind means nothing. Certainly, two wrongs do not make a right. Contrary to what your side seems to think. Sheesh!

Bush should grant a full pardon to Libby. He did absolutley nothing wrong. What Libby did was political, not criminal.

Bill Clinton, however, trashed the constitution and lied under oath, obstructed justice and was impeached for it.

Comment by Jessie Saxson — July 3, 2007 @ 12:44 pm

The utter lack of logic present in the minds of some people is simply astounding. So, let me get this straight:

a) A man who is impeached over lying under oath about his sexual relations with another consenting adult, and for whom said impeachment was overturned on insufficient grounds for impeachment, was obstructing justice and trashing the Constitution?

b) A man who was convicted, under criminal proceedings, by a jury of his peers (and a conservative, Republican judge), of perjury and obstruction of justice in regards to aiding and abetting the outing of a covert CIA agent, covering up for those who ordered it, and for whom the initial appeal was also rejected on their being no basis for the convicted to not immediately start to serve jail time (by at least two conservative, Republican judges, no less), was wrongfully convicted?

Selection (a) is a matter of lying about a sexual relationship. Selection (b) is a matter of lying about an act of treason. And you think that (a) is a larger crime than (b)?!? What the hell kind of pill did you have to take to so thoroughly displace yourself from reality?

An act of sexual indiscretion is worth, at most, public scorn and ridicule. Lying under oath about it certainly deserves some sort of punishment, most likely in the form of a fine, and a permanent entry onto the public record.

An act of treason is worth, at most, being put to DEATH. Lying under oath about an act of treason to protect others who were complicit in said act of treason deserves life in prison, not 2-1/2 years (or, now, zero days in prison, no fine he will have to pay, and a pardon in a year and a half). What Libby did was both political AND criminal. Those two concepts are not mutually exclusive.

The Democrat congress only has a 14% approval rating. It is going to flip back to the GOP next year.

Commuting the sentence of Libby and hopefully pardoning him is the best thing Bush has done all year.

Now, try not to be so utterly disingenuous. It is not the Democrats in Congress who have a 14% approval rating. It is the Congress as a whole. Their approval rating was climbing to quite heights while they were successfully passing the bills this country wants in the House. Only after these bills began to be rejected in the Senate, and only after the Congress capitulated to the President by not voting to end the Iraq Police Action, did Congress' approval rating begin to decline.

In other words, Americans were quite happy with Congress when they were successfully voting on their various 100 day initiatives. Once the obstructionist Republicans started gumming up the gears, and once the Congress as a whole refused to follow the will of the American people and begin the process to end the debacle in Iraq, We the People began to get pissed, for such capitulation is not what the citizens of this country voted for in November of 2006. They voted for change, and the Republicans are doing everything they can to deny the will of the people.

Yet, you think that the Republicans will take back the Congress, and KEEP the Presidency come 2009? You are delusional.
