On July 4, Bush tells troops to prepare for more deaths.

The President “defended his Iraq war policy in a patriotic Fourth of July talk, saying that while he honors the sacrifice of U.S. troops, now is not the time to bring them home. … Bush said victory in Iraq will require ‘more patience, more courage and more sacrifice.’”

Yeah , that’s why they need a president with brains and an honest bone in his body (which removes Chimpy from consideration immediately) , to tell them they’ve done a tremendous job and it’s time for them to come home……

Starting a war should require the proponents to serve in the first line. We have a line of succession so there will always be a president; what we need is a president who is courageous and confident in his abilities to avert war. A president needs to be a statesman, not a warmonger.

  14. El Tonno says:

“Sacrifice” my ass. That word always has been a shorthand for “sucks to be you”. It’s also nice to use the noun. The verb is arkward. Do soldiers sacrifice themselves? Are they sacrificed? Ugh. LURCH!

…and now we have confirmation from Tony Snow that undercover agents may have to do some “sacrifice” of themselves for cheap political points made in Washington D.C. Nice.

One of our fathead trolls was just assuring us, on another thread, that Bush was going to have “skyrocketing” approval numbers (although, of course approval numbers don’t count) because he was going to bring home a bunch of troops.

Boy, that Bush is sneaky. You’d sure never guess he had any intentions of bringing any troops home at all.

And a happy Independence Day to you, too. May I suggest you take full enjoyment out of reading the Constitution (and the Declaration). Note Article I, Section 2, Clause 3: The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves.

    You’d be surprised what’s in there. :)

  28. Probus says:

The president should show some compassion towards the troops on this very important day instead of asking for more sacrifice. He should come up with a policy in Iraq that is worthy of the troops’ sacrifice in Iraq. He should show compassion by allowing troops to have a year between deployments. He should give the troops a raise. He should work to improve medical outpatient care for all our troops unlike the poor care they received at Walter Reed. He should ask for an increase in funding for mental illnesses that affect the troops when they come home from Iraq.

He should ask for more funding for research of traumatic brain injuries sustained on the battlefield. Instead he continues to pursue a policy that puts our troops in harm’s way. Instead of commuting the sentence of Libby who might have spilled the beans on what the president and the vice president knew about outing a covert CIA agent to get back a her husband, the president should do his job, i.e. get our troops out of the Iraqi civil war by setting a deadline.

Here’s a hint: if you’re going to lie about your age, you need to actually pick an age. That way you can say, with authority, “I’ll be 45 in 2028.” Otherwise, you sound like someone trying to convince a cop that his fake ID is good. “Uh, officer, I’m in my early 20s.”

  33. Juan C says:

I think Bush meant sacrifice as in deaths of course, but most as in grief for all the families. Soldiers cant protest, if they do, they are treated as traitors by the chickenhawks (of course, they wont do the dying but they boo any soldier who refuses to do the dying), so the sacrifice was meant to families of soldiers.

  34. Briseadh na Faire says:

The 24-year-old son of former Vice President Al Gore was arrested for drug possession on Wednesday after he was stopped for allegedly speeding in his hybrid Toyota Prius…

A subsequent search yielded a small amount of marijuana, along with prescription drugs…

Gore was still in custody as of mid-morning and was sharing a holding cell with an unknown number of people, said Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.

“There are no special privileges,” he told Reuters.

Unless, of course, you happen to be part of Bush’s inner circle.

  56. The Oracle says:

On Monday (via USA Today), we learned that an URGENT REQUEST was made by Marines fighting in Iraq to the Pentagon and White House in FEBRUARY 2005 for MRAPs (1,169 of them), vehicles that are better armored and designed, that save the lives of our troops when roadside bombs explode.

Donald Rumsfeld blew off this URGENT REQUEST. His replacement, Robert Gates, announced the other day that he, the Pentagon, and the White House, were finally going to respond to this URGENT REQUEST…after 2 1/2 years…and after over 700 of our soldiers in Iraq have died from IEDs, soldiers who might still be alive if the URGENT REQUEST had been acted on 2 1/2 years ago. Moreover, we don’t know how many of our soldiers in Iraq have been severely injured because of the Bush administration delaying sending them the proper equipment, whether vests or vehicles.

How anyone in the Bush administration dares to show their face in public on Independence Day is unconsciionable, especially with all the blood on their hands, both of our soldiers over in Iraq and the Iraqi people.

If Bush and Cheney had both resigned on this Indenpendence Day, then we all would have had something to celebrate…our nation’s independence from their outright incompetence, sheer stupidity and rapacious greed…the very attributes of rogue leadership our founders sought to save us all from when they fought to break free from the British Empire over two hundred years ago.

Oh well, a few hours still are left before this Independence Day is past, so maybe Bush and Cheney will still make the announcement that a large majority of U.S. citizens desire.

    1. What things, or which people, are being sacrificed?

    2. Who is making the sacrifice?

    3. What is the objective of the sacrifice?

    4. Is that objective worth the sacrifice?

    5. Is there a better way to achieve the objective?

Sorry, though I agreed with your subsequent comments, you’re WRONG on this one.

Long BEFORE Richardson opened his mouth, Rep. Dennis Kucinich announced a 12 point Plan (H.R. 1234) to IMMEDIATELY withdraw all troops and to aid the people of Iraq to keep control of their own natural resources (including oil) and to recover from the destruction the current corrupt, criminal president rained down on them.

Rep. Kucinich has made it CLEAR that he recognized the current corrupt, criminal president’s disingenuous framing of the discussion as “victory in Iraq” was an oxymoron. Victory was LOST with the “preemptive” invasion, occupation, and destruction of Iraq.

  64. david says:

President Bush intends to bring the troops home in boxes.

  65. W.Clements says:

He “honors” the sacrifice of American troops? Truly hard to believe. And sacrifice to what high-minded end? For what grand and noble purpose? It is, after all, a completely unnecessary war, a needless war, an illegal, preemptive war that had absolutely NOTHING to do with the so-called War on Terror! Bad enough that we started such a war in Iraq, but to still be there four years later, mired in a nightmare that goes on and on. Where the precious lives of our young sons and daughters are systematically being blown to smithereens. Where our occupation has resulted in the deaths of over 600,000 Iraqi men, women and children. We have created hell on earth for all of them! What an utterly senseless loss of life! It is criminal of this administration, this President and his Vice President and they should be held accountable for their grotesque crimes.

He honors their sacrifice? How is that possible? He has thrown their young lives away for nothing! His words are a cruel mockery of the real truth.

  66. A. Douglas says:

How despicable these thugs are, more blood for oil. They should be held for war crimes!!!! Sacrifice, George, what have you sacrificed you fratboy!

  67. Jericho says:

You can make all the sacrifices you want, you can have all the patience and courage you want, wars are only rarely won by anyone. Real courage means admitting mistakes. Real sacrifice means resigning in the interest of the American people. Bush is only president of the elite he calls his base. Resign already, or be impeached.
