Romney: Libby commutation was ‘reasonable.’

“Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who as Massachusetts governor refused to pardon an Iraq war veteran’s BB-gun conviction, on Tuesday called President Bush’s commutation of Scooter Libby’s prison sentence ‘reasonable.’ … During the four years Romney was in office, 100 requests for commutations and 172 requests for pardons were filed in the state. All were denied.”

All Republicans who celebrate this travesty are, by association, enabling obstruction of justice, and must be held accountable in the next election cycle.

More than 70% of Americans recognize Libby’s commutation as a partisan political act, meant to reward Libby for his lies to a federal prosecutor. Their indignation will follow them to the voting booth. I think Bush has successfully wiped his political party from the scene for some time to come. Is it payback for their refusal to go along with his immigration proposal, or just plain partisan, selfish expediency?

Romney was for ‘pardon’ from start…

He and other GOP candidates see nothing that Libby did is considered wrong..
Althouhg the jury did find a lot wrong with Libby’s testimony and found him liar, and sentenced him…
Now these candidates like Romeny think Scooter should walk free….
How much respect to the law these President’s job seekers have? Their words speak for themselves. Romeny will add or change nothing if he wins. He will be continuation of the same.

Yeah but the same fundamental flaw still remains in your comparisons.
Were these sentences for obstruction of justice where there was no underlying prosecution obstructed ?

No ? Then that’s why Libby deserved to get off and none of those people did. Because that’s what they get to argue in the Libby case.

Because Fitzgerald didn’t find any underlying crime to prosecute. No matter how many times your readers try to claim otherwise (or that Libby was actually convicted of leaking a CIA agent’s name).

Keep making the comparisons if you like. Just expect to hear the same irrefuted and undeniable explanation that Libby’s sentence was determined too harsh becasue he was sentenced for obstructing justice where there was found to be no crime committed.

ps. Please address all angry remarks about this state of affairs to your pal Fitzmas! rather than me.

He determined that there was no deliberate or knowing leak of a CIA agent’s identity, not me. He handed these talking points to the next 20 years worth of republicans, not me. And yet yesterday, one of you was saying you would vote for him if he ran for President.

  12. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Maybe at the next Republican debate, the moderator can ask a question about this in a way that won’t allow them to lie and obfuscate. They should premise the question in facts so the candidates won’t spend their time lying throughout their answers.

“Gov. Romney. The CIA has said that at the time her name appeared in Robert Novak’s column, her status was classified. Clearly a law had been broken. Given this fact, and given the fact that Scooter Libby lied to investigators trying to find out how that happened and obstruced the investigation, why do you feel that Libby should not go to jail?”

Then they can’t start by saying “There was no underlying crime here. Libby was just having memory problems. (which would seem to make him a poor choice to be the vice president’s chief-of-staff). Fitzgerald was out-of-control. Blah-blah-blah-lie-lie-blah-blah-lie.”

  13. Kay says:

Massachussetts is a lousy state. Your state is only one of two to actually lose population. Ever think that Romney was only trying to whip it into shape?

What a moronic thing to stay. Massachusetts is a great state. And I am proud to be from a state that legalized Gay Marriage.

Like they said on the evening news last night, it would be nice if one of you would actually READ the summation.

    You’re lying.

    He NEVER said that.

He said that Libby made it IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL if a crime had been committed, by LYING.

He likened Libby to a player throwing SAND IN THE FACE OF THE UMPIRE, so the umpire cannot make the call.

So thanks Kilo. Thanks for demonstrating clearly how uninformed and uneducated the handful of mooks who still support the pig Bush, really are.

    RIGHT-WING MASTURBATORY GLOATING

The wingers who are gloating about Libby are simply indulging in “masturbatory gloating,” which is a thing that wingers do.

Wingnuts have a recurrent physiological need to gloat. If they can’t gloat, they get a psychological condition, similar to “blue balls,” in which they start fantasizing about shooting liberals. (Of course they’re all too chickensh*t to harm a hair on a liberal’s head, but never mind.)

Unfortunately for the Right, six years of Republican-induced megacatastrophes, have left them nothing whatsoever to gloat about.

So what do they do? They make up something to gloat about…and then gloat about it. It’s kind of funny and also rather disgusting.

You’ve probably noticed that the trolls who here will often make something up to gloat about–and then come here to gloat all over the place…

…about the thing they just made up. You’ve gotta love wingers!

Anyway, that’s why they’re gloating about one of their guys beating a prison rap, which is achingly pathetic.

But still better than listening to them bray about shooting liberals.

White House and those who hide behind God. We had a Pastor lie while doing this thing with Church money, Ralph Reed preaching the word of God while stealing, the Hammer who calls God on his cell phone and gets direction, now Mitt’s run for the Oval office includes an office for Petiphiles to get more children. Fingers Foley the poster Man for Petiphiles who can continue to molest children with the protection of the Attorney General and former Speaker of the House Hastert. Now Mitt will continue the program if elected. Fred Thompson and Mitt have allowed voters to know nothing will change in the White House if their elected. Corruption and child abuse will continue plus more stealing from the US Treasury this time for the Mormons to get their share.

What the simpletons don’t realize, is that the commuting of Libby’s sentence was the worst move Bush could have made. It opened a floodgate of scruitiny that Bush won’t come back from.

By doing this, Bush tied himself to the Valerie Plame CIA leak, and that was the dumbest thing he could have done.

I have a question about Mitt Romney. Why are Democrats and the MSM not pointing out how little political experience he has. The sum total of his political experience was one four year term as a Governor. The Republics and the MSM say that Obama is not experienced enough even though he spent eight years in the state legislature and has been a Senator for 4 years. So, why is Obama not qualified for lack of experience but Romney is?

Well thats too bad, cause they’re not.

The Mormon faith centers around Jesus and his teachings, and adheres closer to those teachings than most churches today, particularly Catholicism.

Harry Reid is a mormon too, and is a far better representative of the mormons that Romney ever will be.

Romney is whats known among LDS members, as a “Jack Mormon”, which is an old term used to describe members of the church who only attended out of peer pressure and social acceptance. Romney believes in the mormon church about as much as he believes in doing the right thing over the popular thing.

  32. Katie says:

“Were these sentences for obstruction of justice where there was no underlying prosecution obstructed ?”

Kilo, your critical thinking skills are certainly lacking. The reason why there was no prosecution for the underlying crime is because of Libby’s obstruction. And, Libby also committed a crime, he outed an undercover CIA agent. I don’t care if he was the first one to do it, he still did it. And I firmly believe that Fitzpatrick has been in on the fix from the start. That is why he didn’t prosecute anyone for outing Valerie Plame, a covert CIA officer. And before you start arguing that she was not covert, please answer this question. If she was not covert, why did she need a cover company, Brewster Jennings, which Libby and Co. also outed.

Super. Well I’m okay with that state of affairs.
Let’s see if you are over the days, weeks, months and years ahead.

“No they’re not. They’re fkn fantastic. That’s why I be proven correct a million times over the next year alone. And you can’t pretend I won’t be because we’ve already clocked 10s of thousands and it’s only day 2. Comment by Kilo”

You not only need a class in critical thinking, you also need a remedial English class. I’m sure your local Junior College has both of these classes. Do yourself a favor and take them if you ever want to make something of yourself in this life. BTW, how old are you. Your writings make you seem like you are maybe 10.

  78. BARTLEBEE says:

    Mitt Romney is a joke.

And if these mooks think he’s got a chance at the RNC nod, then I’m all for it.

Put him out there, and we’ll make mince meat out of him.

  79. Pat says:

chimpy’s commutation of libby’s sentence is an outrage to our judicial system. Repugs talk about how they are all about law and order. What a joke. Libby obstructed the Plame investigation from his first statements to the FBI to cover shooters fat ass. Justice was served and chimpy abused his office (again) by his actions on Monday.

  80. spit take says:

We can crow all we want about Romney’s hypocrisy over this matter.

But what is really important is that when you place the two cases side-by-side — an Iraq War vet who wants a pardon for an assault conviction from when he was thirteen years old so that he can become a police officer, juxtaposed with a high-ranking administration official convicted of four felony counts, including obstruction of justice — the fact that Romney saw fit to deny the former yet claims the latter commutation is “reasonable” speaks volumes about his judgment and decision-making ability.

After six and a half years of Chimpy, all I really want in the Oval office is a president who reaches conclusions that most American can find reasonable. Apparently, Romney ain’t it.

And given the support of all of the Republic candidates for this commutation, neither is any of the rest of them.

  81. BARTLEBEE says:

Well I’m okay with that state of affairs.

    Comment by Kilobe — July 4, 2007 @ 12:01 pm

“state of affairs” is an accurate description.

The Bush administration has been one major affair after the next, and I don’t mean the Clinton kind.

  82. Doc Rock says:

What a canard! “Were these sentences for obstruction of justice where there was no underlying prosecution obstructed ?” The obstruction was successful and is on-going, the commutation being part and parcel! What a false cause argument!!! That obstruction of justice is OK if there’s no prosecution! The gravity of the obstruction depends on the crime, not a subsequent or successful prosecution. The crime was grave and the cover up graver still.

I understand what you’re saying, Bartlebee, but I figured the same thing in 2000 when the Republics nominated an inarticulate, inexperienced governor from Texas who had been a failure in virtually everything that he had ever attempted to accomplish on his own in life. Never underestimate the power of the right-wing spin machine and the willingness of the corporate media to repeat its talking points.

I’ll grant you that the environment has changed. Back then, America was in a pretty good mood after eight years of Clinton-Gore peace and prosperity, and the Republics could focus on non-issues, which is their strength. Now they have a real record to run against, and it’s a millstone around their necks. The nation’s mood has soured on so many levels and Republics have proven to be terrible at governing.

  120. Briseadh na Faire says:

A woman is said to have asked, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”

Benjamin Franklin replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

We have lived through the end of the Republic and the birth of the Unitary Executive. Republican candidates, masters of doublethink and all that entails play to crowds who cheer when they speak of torturing people in fictitious “doomsday” scenarios.

“So this is how democracy ends. To thunderous applause.”

What has become of the Republican base? They are no longer people who respect the rule of law; who demand smaller, less intrusive government. The Republican base cheers for Big Brother; intrusions into our private lives; into decisions between a doctor and patient; indiscriminatly eavesdrops on citizens; incarcerates “enemy combatants” indefinitly, suspending habeas corpus, while commuting sentences of convicted felons who work in the White House.

The Republican base demands fiscal responsibility, when it comes to social programs, while cheering endless debt for war; endless profit through no-bid contracts given to politically connected corporations; and the creation of perpetual dynasties to 1.5% of the population.

The Republican base condems abortion while cheering for the assassination of a Supreme Court Justice, foreign heads of State, and journalists who disagree with their views.

The Republican base stands for hatred and intolerance, and the use of force to impose thier will upon everyone else. And, in classic doublethink, they do this all in the name of Christ.

Doctor Franklin, thank you for the Republic, the grand experiment. It has reached its nadir. We now have a Unitary Executive, and leadership in Congress unwilling to even attempt impeachment. We are a Republic now in name only.

Unitary Executive – Monarchy, what’s in a name? A Rose, by any other name, still has thorns.

This “Independence Day” would be a good day to fly our flags at half mast, and upside down.

    Peace.

Because of Megaphone software. It automatically finds all polls on the internet sites, automatically votes, changes IP addresses, then votes more. The user does not have control over which vote gets cast.

Americans financing the 2008 presidential contest are heavily favoring Democrats with campaign contributions, giving three dollars to the party’s leading contenders during the second quarter for every two they gave to the Republican candidates.

Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama’s 258,000 contributors since January exceed the combined number of donors of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain of Arizona, according to estimates provided by the campaigns.

The trolls will no doubt claim, suddenly, that fundraising doesn’t matter, blah blah blah, but the trend is very clear.

Ah, yes, the black/white, either/or mentality of the wingnut. If there is no one who disagrees with you, then you must get “joy” out of conversing with people who see the world exactly the same as you do.

To the binary wingnut “mind” the only possibilities are that one a) gets off on arguing or b) gets off on an echo chamber.

Wingnuts don’t consider the possibilities that there are more than two ways of looking at the world and that people could benefit from hearing many perspectives. Maybe that’s because they are incapable of processing any thought other than the party line.

    Comment by Jessie Saxton — July 4, 2007 @ 1:05 pm

I’ll try to dumb this down so you can understand: “chickenhawk” is a term usually reserved for those who actively promote military solution, but who are reluctant to fight themselves.

Obama was too young to be drafted for Vietnam, and Hillary, as a woman, was ineligible. Moreover, neither of them can be said to be “hawkish”. Voting for funding for troops in wartime is hardly a hawkish act.

Your top players, however, Rudy and Fred, were both eligible for the draft and both sough and received deferments. Neither served in the military, yet both have staked enthusiastic pro-war positions against a nation that never attacked us and had no capability to attack us. They are, as are most Republics, “hawks”.

It is first necessary to be a “hawk” in order to be a “chickenhawk”. See the connection? “Hawk” –> “Chickenhawk”.

Now, I know this is a lot to take in, so by all means, take the rest of the day off and let your mind (such as it is) absorb it, so that maybe next time you won’t make yourself look so foolish. And I mean that with all due respect.

  182. Jessie Saxton says:

“Moreover, neither of them can be said to be “hawkish”. ”

Hillary was trying to position herself as hawkish, she voted for the war, won’t say her vote was a mistake. I’m not sure what she is doing now. She has fliped and flopped all over the place.

Obama is hawkish in the areas that he likes, like Darfur and Haiti and Kosovo.

So yeah, they are both chickenhawks.

Bartlebee, even though we’ve chased away Jessie Troll, I thought you should know that I enjoyed your line in post 220.

In some ways, trolls beating a retreat is the most satisfying outcome possible. Sure, it isn’t really that satisfying — we don’t get their reluctant admissions that they were wrong about something, but let’s face it — when is a troll ever gonna be capable of that? The other alternative is that they’ll just keep recycling their discredited talking points, drifting further and further from the reality pier but never giving up. That’s just a waste of time, and that’s what they count on when they do that.

Yeah, silence is the best we can hope for. Then we can at least assume that they’ve recognized the futility of their effort and, rather than capitulate, they retreat, maybe change their screen name or just go see if their mom has a pudding cup for them. So it’s a win-win.

Romney is simply doomed by the fact that the GOPers would not vote for a Mormon. Just like they won’t nominate a black, female or Jewish man. The party is still filled with narrow-minded people who truly believe that the WASP represents their Aryan race…

Yeah, your kind is so open-minded! LMAO! So tolerant of dissent and open to all points of view… so long as they agree with you.

The same people who call Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom” and Colin Powell a “house slave” are so open-minded and tolerant!

    DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

    Tell us more!

I’m happy that the Republics running for President can’t see what hypocrites they are.

Yeah, it’s the Republican candidates who are the hypocrites, not the zanies who defended the indefensible pardons of Clinton–who sold pardons like he was running a garage sale–and now feign indignation at a single commutation of a guy who was a minor player in a non-crime.

The same people who had no problem with Sandy Burglar’s repeated thefts and destruction of classifed national security documents in an effort to cover up more Clinton malfeasance.

And you actually wonder why the rest of the country isn’t as outraged as you are? You really think normal people in this country see things from your twisted point of view? No, sorry, you’re bound to be terribly disappointed in the public reaction, because most people in this country are sane.

Remember when these trolls used to come in and scream about their good poll numbers? Now the polls suddenly aren’t important to them, since no one in America supports Bush anymore, but them.

And they show even less support for Reid and Pelosi.

The whole country has turned on this corrupt pigs, and the little corrupt piglets who carry his water. Buttlicking worms, who will get ground up in the wheels of democracy.

Yeah, but I’m sure the corrupt pigs, lead by Reid and Pelosi, will rebound. Before you know it, their approval ratings will be back up in the 20s.

Why would you bother impersonating someone who is already considered a troll, to troll ?
What just couldn’t think of a name for yourself ?

Looks like Romney just ended his chance to be President with his continued flip-floping.
