REPORT: Voters Believe Iraq Is Creating More Terrorists, Distracting From Domestic Priorities

bushpledge.jpg ThinkProgress has obtained results of a new poll released yesterday at the Aspen Ideas Festival, a conference hosted by The Atlantic and the Aspen Institute. The poll finds that voters of all parties are overwhelmingly pessimistic about the war in Iraq, believing the United States will fail. The war has distracted from the fight against terrorism and other domestic priorities. Some highlights:

– 82 percent say people in other countries view the United States unfavorably.

– 71 percent say people in other countries now view the American people unfavorably.

– 53 percent of American believe the largest threat facing the United State is from terrorist organizations.

– 83 percent of Americans believe the U.S. should share a leadership role with allies and other countries around the world.

– 63 percent of voters think the U.S. should focus on domestic problems instead of foreign affairs.

– 56 percent of Americans believe that the war in Iraq is distracting us from the war on terror.

– 67 percent believe the war in Iraq is creating more terrorists.

– 72 percent favor diplomacy to pressure with Iran.

Also yesterday at the festival, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) said, “Habeas corpus is coming back, and we’re going to solve that one.”

According to a recent LA Times/Bloomberg poll, 68 percent of the American public also wants Bush to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. The Center for American Progress recently released a report called Strategic Reset that lays out a plan for the withdrawal of virtually all U.S. troops within one year and phases out the U.S. “training of Iraq’s national security forces.”

Proof that 18% of voters in the US don’t ever leave the house, own a television or computer and don’t subscribe to a newspaper.

Polls, polls, polls… you libs are obsessed with measuring how the American public thinks about things.

Guess they forgot to poll the Trolls here…. they could NEVER agree to such drivel!! Oh Wait, they did, and they are part of the 33% who DON’T believe we are creating more terrorists in Iraq. But then, none of them have ever served in Iraq, so how would they know!

  12. Crump's Brother says:

    Zooey,

“What that f*ck is going on here….?”

You are dea on. My best friend called me Tuesday to talk about the Libby commutation. He is the least engaged person I have ever known. But he is furious over this. He never discusses politics. But I get a call from him out of the blue, and he wants the total background on this thing and wants to know what he can do. It was incredible.

Americans probably despise injustice more than any other crime. All ‘other’ Americans realize that they had been convicted of obstruction and perjury, they would be doing the time.

They see this as injustice. Plain and simple. And that pisses people off!!

First of all, how did those who were polled make the distinction?

Secondly, what assumptions did they make about the distinction made by “people in other countries”?

  44. Mstessyrue says:

The White House should be ashamed to see these outrageous polls and opinions against them from the American people. I do believe the war in Iraq is creating more terrorism and violence. Even worse, it is causing more poverty and hunger in this world. As one of the nations pledge to eliminate world hunger in the Milennium Goals, the US is not meeting up to its standards. $340 billion dollars has been spent on this fruitless war. However, it only takes $19 billion dollars each year to end world poverty. US could have ended 17 years of hunger, disease, poverty and ill education. This administration is in desperate need of reform and new direction.

But instead of helping, the Iraqi people now have less jobs, less food, less water, less electricitiy, less safety..

Well, bombing the civilian population and starving it to death since 1991 is not what the common sense sees HELP. Now, invading their country for illegal and immoral reasons, killing thousands of them, watching troops from a foreign country every single day right out your home, and driving away millions of people from their places is not what a normal person would call HELP. Perhaps we should start there.

  54. Mr. President says:

    Comment by RemoveBush — July 5, 2007 @ 1:17 pm
    FROM THE LINK:
The proportion of deaths attributed to coalition forces diminished in 2006 to 26 percent. Between March 2003 and July 2006, households attributed 31 percent of deaths to the coalition.

Clearly, we are not the biggest problem. In fact, we most certainly are helping… unlike other countries…

While the survey collected information on the manner of death, the study did not examine the circumstances of the death, such as whether the deceased was actively involved in armed combat, terrorism, criminal activity or caught in the middle of the conflict.

Well, that data might be nice to have before we start spitting out numbers indiscriminately.

Why dont they invade China for Christ´s sake if Chinese live under current, widely docummented oppression? Oh, becuz China WOULD kick your ass, for sure. Just so you know… lots of people in other countries (at least the ones with some education) see the difference between the American Government (Bush et al) and the American people. Just as you should see the difference between… say… the Iraqi government and the Iraqi civilians.

Only freakin’ idiots (both in the US and everywhere else… and that also includes evil terr’ists) disregard the difference between governments and citizens.

We’re not hurting the Iraqi people. For the most part, they’re only hurting themselves. U.S. forces aren’t strapping bombs onto their belts and causing daily mayhem. Those suicide bombing are the source to the problems caused in Iraq because the scare of them forces citizens live constant fear, and that prevents them from being productive, causing “less jobs, less food, less water, less electricity, less safety..” Regular citizens aren’t afraid of a U.S troop swinging by.

The troops are not to blame, and your MnM idiot has nothing but talking-points to offer, doesn’t deserve a response. Saddam and his leftovers are to blame.

The Iraqis can continue to blow-up themselves and others or accept the kindness and generosity from our troops.

It’s tough when the domestic league plays in the summer and the clubs can’t spare their stars for extended periods, but the US really needs more experience against big-time teams like Argentina.

    Gee, those ingrate Iraqis.

W and his nemesis DICK just no they are there so keep on looking, in the meantime the rest of the troops can come home. Especially, anyone who isn’t Republican because we all know they are cowards and traitors, THEREFORE THEY CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO FIGHT. Actually, I’m not white at all. More of a swarthy brown really, with dark eyes and a big bent nose. Distinguishing marks: spear thrust in one side, holes in wrists and ankles. I get stopped at all the borders: “Hey you, flower child, are you taking the p*ss?”. **Sigh**

  127. Probus says:

Key republicans like Sen. Lugar, Sen. Smith, Sen. Snowe, and Sen. Hagel and others have broken with this president over the war in Iraq. Most Americans are pessimistic because we have lost it. Even the White House no longer talks in terms of winning. The president himself says that we can’t stop the violence in Iraq. He cited Israel as a poor and inaccurate example. If we can’t stop the violence in Iraq then we should bring all combat forces home.

The war in Iraq has created more terrorists than there were before we invaded it. The real fight against terrorists is in Afghanistan, a war that has been largely ignored by this White House much to our detriment. Our presence in Iraq is fueling the terrorists, our presence is used as a recruiting tool due to the fact that we are seen as an occupying force by the Iraqis. This war has made us less safe. People view us unfavorably because we have abandoned the Geneva Conventions which keep our forces safe from torture.

Torture doesn’t work. It is immoral. Due to scandals like Abu Garaib and Gitmo we have lost our moral authority in the world. Our presence in Iraq has undermined our authority as a world leader. Because the rationale for the Iraq war was largely false in that there were no WMDs in Iraq we have lost our standing as a world leader. If we want to succeed and once again become a world leader we must set a deadline to get all combat troops out of Iraq.

    Mr./Ms. Neo-Con,
Have you ever heard the expression “overkill?” Unlike redstate, which bans even the slightest criticism of the rightwing, TP welcomes and posts contrary views; but we really don’t need to see the same thing three times. Perhaps you’ve been spending too much time with dimwitted Bush-worshippers who need to be told something over and over before they absorb it. We don’t. And please don’t take the late JFK’s name in vain. He was nothing like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Yeah, and you’re not spewing propaganda. Superior culture? Not you, dimwit. And your culture is only Esparta redux. You know what other country based its culture in Espartans? Nazi Germany. You know what happened to Espartans and Nazi Germani short time after?

    “Superior culture”. What a joke.

  140. Rob says:

If 67% of the public believe that the Iraq War is increasing the number of terrorists, then it should be safe even for weenie politicians to speak out against the continuation of the war. The predictable attacks from the right that such politicians are soft on terrorism will not resonate very far. We are beginning to see a bit of movement in this direction by Republicans who face re-election contests in 2008. These previously gung-ho warmongers are beginning to realize that their pro-war positions are actually a liability. One can only hope that they will face staunch and articulate ant-war opponents who will eviscerate them for having supported such a destructive policy. Although their change of heart is better late than never, it is still late.

  141. Proud American says:

I apologize for the 3-time post above….my comp had some sort of problem…but its okay that you can’t handle a little conservative opinion…I expected nothing more. Oh, and by the way I personally know no other conservatives that live in my area…SOUTHERN CALIFORINA, right out of LA! I also attend a LIBERAL private school….we just heard Ralph Nader speak. So please don’t tell me about Bush worshippers, since I have never spoken to any….besides, Bush isn’t a true conservative! I did not use JFK’s name in vain and I never tried to say that he was Bush or Cheney. I agree with JFK almost 100% of the time, unlike Bush. JFK was a strong (now conservative) leader, who knew how and why we needed to protect this great country.
I don’t understand your reasoning in calling me “dimwitted” and I find it funny that you assume I live in a “redstate”…if only. So please, I apologize for the “overkill/redundancy” (accident!) and you might want to think twice next time before you leap to mislead conclusions.

    Love,
    Ms. Neo-Con
