Yesterday in his Fourth of July speech, President Bush discussed the “many ways” Americans can “say thanks to the men and women who wear the uniform and their families”:
You can send a care package. You can reach out to a military family in your neighborhood with a mom or dad on the front lines; you can ask somebody, “What can I do to help you? What do you need?” You can car pool. You can be on bended knee and pray for a soldier and their families.
You can scream at the top of your electronic lungs at your elected representatives to get off their collective asses and end the war.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:14 pmAnd you can send goodies to the troops.
pray “on bended knee” …sorry that don’t cut it…you gotta get on both and grovel
July 5th, 2007 at 12:15 pmCar pool? In an Excursion that’s not going to do much good. Pray? For two resignations, perhaps. That would save some lives.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:17 pm“You can car pool”? This is strangely familiar to Jimmy Carter putting on a sweater.

The Democrats will lose in 2008 if Queen Hillary runs. She is a LIAR and the right-wing will swift boat her like we did Kerry.
Why are the Democrats so hell bent on keeping Clinton around? He’s done nothing but give us war, tax cuts and Samuel Alito.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:19 pm“What can I do to help you? What do you need?â€
I need a ride to the local co-op food pantry to buy cheap groceries because you wouln’t even give military families an extra .5% pay raise dipshit
July 5th, 2007 at 12:19 pmYou can car pool.
WTF?
carpool to support the troops? I guess if you make sure there are plenty of those “Made in China” magnetic “Support the Troops” stickers on the car =P
Dubya really needs to quit snorting and drinking before giving speeches.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:19 pmCar pools? I can usually connect the dots on his strange loose associations, but this one baffles me.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:19 pm“So I know your son is off in Iraq fighting, risking his life every day, so to help I thought I’d carpool with you. I’ll take Tuesdays and Thursdays, and you can have Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I drop my dog off at the spa each morning so I hope your not allergic to dander. I’m so glad I could help out in your time of need.”
July 5th, 2007 at 12:20 pmPrayer is about as helpful as putting yellow magnets all over your car.
You can donate to veterans groups, you can help out at veteran healthcare facilities, you can put your money where your mouth is and enlist. There are lots of things you can do to help your troops, and most of them go just a wee bit further in actually achieving anything then groveling before your imaginary friend in the sky.
Car pooling ironically, the very thing Bush was against at the start of the war he started for no apparent reason, will help but you need to take things a little bit further then that if you really want to change things for the better.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:20 pmYou can continue running up your credit cards to ensure that the terrorists do not win.
You can donate money to the Republican Party to support the troops.
You can kick a homeless man to show you’re a good American.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:20 pmThey only need to car pool because you and your corporate energy buddies are F’ing gouging Americans with fuel prices.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:22 pmYes, you can car pool as you drive to the mall to do even more sacrifice for the war — shopping! But if you really want the full Bushy sacrifice remember to watch the evening news showing those horrible scenes from Iraq — Mr. Bush says that’s the big sacrifice we all can make.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:22 pmWe can impeach Lying Pres. Bush for the troops!
We can get a President in-office that doesn’t lie about fabricated reasons for war!
We can ensure the lying elected Republicans remain a minority party while the “war on terra” is saved from the debacle that is Iraq!
There’s a LOT of things that can be done to help our troops! Don’t Vote Republican for starters!
July 5th, 2007 at 12:22 pm“Car pool” was a slip. He didn’t really mean to imply the obvious… that we’re over there fighting for oil…
July 5th, 2007 at 12:22 pmCar pooling is a great idea, but completely weird in this context.
The King is going Fruit Loops.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:22 pmNot car pooling emboldens the enemy.

July 5th, 2007 at 12:24 pmI thought we were fighting them there so we didn’t have to car pool here.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:25 pmAl Gore III uses a Prius to carpool.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:26 pmDo you mind if I catch a ride with you? I gotta be in formation at 6am…so we gotta roll out no later than 5:20….you’ll be up, right?
July 5th, 2007 at 12:27 pmWe can bring the troops home, send Bush to the Hague and then car pool to the celebration.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:28 pmNo guys, seriously, car pooling makes perfect sense in this context. The way Bush sees it is Americans want/need oil. Perhaps more than anything else. It’s his duty as president to provide it. The way he does this is by sending our troops into foreign lands to more-or-less take oil that we have no right to. He doesn’t want to do this because it causes a lot of our soldiers to die – but hey, a president’s got to get reelected (and why not make a *killing* off it, too). So if you carpool, you’ll need less oil, and he won’t have to send the military into harm’s way to get as much of it.
That’s the connection, and no doubt it was a slip.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:28 pmThe only prayer that will help is praying for impeachment.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:29 pmBush also said:
“And we all long for the day when there are far fewer American servicemen and women in Iraq. The time will come when Iraq has a stable, self-sustaining government…”
Short Bush: Surge 4 evah.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:29 pmBush added, “but don’t ask that I balance the budget to pay for the costs. Or raise taxes in order to pay for the $1.8 billion per week we spend.”
July 5th, 2007 at 12:30 pmYou Don’t Have the Votes
Just read it. Obviously you don’t actually get the issues involved in this, and need to read up on them a bit before you start throwing around words like “Hypocrit.”
Clinton’s 140 pardons, including that of Marc Rich, were not of figures whose crimes were intended to shield the Whitehouse. Marc Rich in particular was in a position where America was not going to get him, and the only way to get anything out of him was to offer a pardon.
Scooter Libby’s sentence was for the crimes of purjory and defeating the ends of justice, whereby he strove to shield the very people who pardoned him from a full and vigorous investigation. Commuting his sentence was in short, symptomatic of a highly corrupt backroom deal via which Libby wouldn’t go to jail, so long as he didn’t “rat” on his political masters.
While the pardons on January 20th were contraversial, there was never a hint that it might be in effect, buying off witnesses against the Clinton Whitehouse. Commuting Libby’s sentence on the other hand, is seen as being exactly that, the Republican President buying off a witness against his administration.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:31 pmDAMN!!!! How many more sacrifices do you think we amurrikans need to make anyway? I already sent the little lady out to Neidless Markup with my Platinum card in teh Hummer to shop. What else would I need to do? This is gettin’ downright INCONVENIENT!!!
July 5th, 2007 at 12:31 pmBush added, “but don’t ask me to raise the mileage standards for automobiles by even 1 mile per gallon.”
July 5th, 2007 at 12:31 pmDaddy Bush had his 1,000 points of light and Jr. had his armies of compassion. Both of those are buzz words for we’re not going to do shit so if you peasants want to help others you’re on your own.
Apparently Jr. thinks a big sacrifice for the troops is carpooling. He’s such a giver.
July 5th, 2007 at 12:32 pmNow see, these kinds of things really call into question the motives of libbie loons. Are ya really so dense that ya can’t put together “What can I do to help you (military families)?” and car pools (taking their kids somewhere since one parent is gone)? Or do you hate the military so much, ya can’t conceive of helping out the families? Or are you so blinded by your hatred of W that ya can’t see you are making fools of yourselves with these posts? Or all of the above? Once again, I see the TP folks sitting back and watching ya take the bait. Ya’ll have a good day! ;)
July 5th, 2007 at 12:32 pmBush added, “but don’t ask me to require that the troops receive proper training before I ship them off to Iraq. Or that they have the necessary equipment when they get there.”
July 5th, 2007 at 12:35 pmAnybody have a clue as to what Upright Left’s post is trying to say?
Incoherent bullshite. Please re-write and re-submit.

He didn’t say “Give military families a lift.” He said “Carpool.” Carpooling is a very good system, it is something we liberals agree with, and to be absolutely honest America reducing its oil consumption may even cut into the funds of Islamic extremist groups, but it is a bit of a strange answer to the question when there are far more immediate things which could help.

Well, personally speaking….When I next deploy, I’m not taking the car with me. My wife will have the wheels, so uh…I’d rather you just send cards with good wishes (and cash…we loves us some cash in the military!)
And you can send goodies to the troops.

Yeah, but the Military is generally a pretty tight-knit community. When units deploy, families take care of each other, and help each other out wherever they can. If someone needs a ride or to carpool, and ask, I happen to believe that someone would say, “Great idea, let’s work out a schedule.”
July 5th, 2007 at 1:14 pmHowever, I believe that the carpooling would be among the family members alone more than the family members and the general public.

Are you not aware how many people are deployed whose families don’t live near bases? There are quite a few in my area and offering to take kiddos where they need to go is one of the small ways folks try to help the remaining parent. The guys I’ve spoken to were very appreciative of all the things their communities have done to support thier families. Whatever their views of the war, it gives them some comfort to know their wives aren’t struggling with the basics of day to day living because friends, family and neighbors are helping where they can.

July 5th, 2007 at 5:04 pmThe president has once again shown how out of touch he is with what our troops are going through in Iraq. If he had bothered to serve in Vietnam, he would know the true cost of war and the effect it has on each individual soldier and their family. He continues to pay lip service to our troops by continuing to pursue a failed policy in Iraq. His steadfast refusal to get our troops out of harm’s way in Iraq shows his utter disregard for our troops and their families. The troops must come before the policy of nation building. The policy can never and should never be placed before the troops. The president owes it to the troops to get them out of Iraq’s civil war. He must set a date to get all combat forces out of Iraq ASAP.
July 5th, 2007 at 5:36 pmYeah…..er, Sarge, don’t you have any idea of what military families go through?

True enough, SOME families decide during a deployment to move back to where they have a support network in place….such as wherever their families are. For example, when I deploy next, my wife would likely go to stay w/ her family in FL (Her mom has MS and her father is 73, so they could ALWAYS use a hand). But generally, military families who live off base….live in the adjacent community. It’s not such a stretch to be able to make contact with someone in the military community.

If there is a god, I sure don’t think he chooses sides – in fact, I think he would be pretty angry with the one who started this war.
I thought you Lefties would be in favor of car pooling.
Comment by Mr. President
Nobody here has actually opposed the idea of carpooling, presidential dimwit.
July 5th, 2007 at 10:23 pmpray for a soldier? like that will do anything. pray for an amputee to be healed…it will not happen. why? it is obvious, the christian president that spoke to “god” is really just talking to himself. there is not god for him to speak to and no god that would support torture…ok…the christian god supports torture and will burn you in hell fire over, and over and over again because he loves you with great mercy and compassion.
bush is a nut
July 6th, 2007 at 3:28 amlet us not forget, bush took the most days of vacation of any president in his first term and guess what, instead of protecting us…we were attacked and over 3,000 americans have died from that terrorist attack that he likely could have stopped…if he wasn’t so busy golfing. wow…what an idiot
