Reagan’s NSA Chief: Withdraw funds, pull out, impeach.

Gen. William Odom, the former head of the National Security Agency under President Reagan, writes that Congress should begin cutting off funds for Iraq and must force Bush to begin a withdrawal before he leaves office:

To force him to begin a withdrawal before then, the first step should be to rally the public by providing an honest and candid definition of what “supporting the troops” really means and pointing out who is and who is not supporting our troops at war. The next step should be a flat refusal to appropriate money for to be used in Iraq for anything but withdrawal operations with a clear deadline for completion.

The final step should be to put that president on notice that if ignores this legislative action and tries to extort Congress into providing funds by keeping U.S. forces in peril, impeachment proceeding will proceed in the House of Representatives. Such presidential behavior surely would constitute the “high crime” of squandering the lives of soldiers and Marines for his own personal interest.

Cutting off funds will accomplish NOTHING.

This administration tasked Agent Dov Zakheim with stealing between $2.3 Billion and $7 Billion in the weeks preceding 9/11. Rumsfeld held a press conference announcing it the day prior to 9/11.

ALL of the money required to pull of this coup was stolen prior to 9/11.

Congress is completely irrelevant, and blackmailed, and they know it.

And if Congress wont do it then what is left? How long will we wait as the winds of dictatorship continue to blow over us with its dead cold icy grip? How long before we become less rational ourselves, even though we pride ourselves in reasoned thought? At want point do an angry citizenry become an uncontrollable angry mob? At what point do we see the difference between ourselves and the “special people” who engineer for themselves untold riches and untouchable status under the law? At what point do a conservatives and a liberals red lines cross to become a deadly line for the arrogant few?

I wish everyone could get an indepth history lessson of the kind of man that was George Washington so they can intelligently compare his with the monkey boy. Conservative …. Liberal… everything else… we all can see the honor in our first president. You have to “believe” and have “faith” to NOT see a war criminal in this current president. A threat to our Constitution and a long term danger to our western style of civilization.

WHO? Who would send our fellow citizens who sign up to be soldiers to die for ANYTHING less than all out defense? The lowest among us that is who.

Is THIS Liberty? Is this what old men like Ben Franklin and young men like the soldiers under George Washington risked their necks for? Or is this simply out of control ego at its worse?

Taking offense at snide remarks by “trolls” is getting old… call us what you will… it is time to ignore these fools and do what needs to be done. Their WORD is WORTHLESS…. they have ZERO credibility… there is no need to even bother responding to them. Take action Congress! Or tell us you cannot and we MUST! So that we will know that is is OUR TIME to take action… just tell us it is in our hands now and that Congress can do no more under the Constitution… so that we can make our own choice between Liberty or Death!

  42. willyloman says:

Bush doesn’t care about his aproval rating and the Republican party is distancing themselves from his administration.

He won’t start removing troops because it is a troop build-up on the border of Iran.

And Cheney has plans for Iran. So does the new Office of Special Plans, Iran.

So does the Committe on Present Danger.

  43. The Captain says:

“Not a chance. In the last two years, the highest it was was a 46.”

If the American people want us to start bringing our troops home, Bush should do it. Give the people what they want. We don’t need 150k troops there. We only need about 20k to go after al qaeda in Iraq. And watch Bush’s numbers go over 55%, at least.

  44. Badger says:

Yeah..Gen. Odom has been a thoughtfull and persuasive critic of Bush’s Iraq policy for some time now.
Why Now??? The Iraqi Govt. is going on vacation with no oil deal in sight. The republican senators up for election are opposing Bush on Iraq. Hadley is blaming the military for the failures in Iraq. The surge has failed to bring a reduction in violence. 100 brave Americans are dying every week. Bush and the Republicans have failed in Iraq. Odom is just correctly pointing out that the emporer has no clothes.

    AYMAN AL-ZAWAHIRI

  46. Marie says:

Odom has spoken out before against this war, but this is even stronger. He actually speaks of high crimes and the president in the same paragraph. Former officials in the Bush adm. and Reagan adm. have tried to persuade Bush the Dumb that he should rethink his strategery, but to no avail. Generals spoke of the military folly of this war from the start, and their numbers are growing, again, to no avail. Appointees are leaving every week. Rep. Senators and Representatives are beginning to step away from him.
Yet, Bush the Dumb continues on his way oblivious to the criticism and advice, believing in his messianic mission.
Either he is back on the booze, or the coke, or his history of addiction has taken its toll on his already limited brain.
But it is growing ever more to clear to his supporters that something drastic must be done – even they are beginning to see the long-term, possibly irreversible damage he has wrought.

It isn’t like we haven’t been screaming about it from the sidelines for years.

  47. lonesomerobot says:

well, captain, it really doesn’t work that way. in fact the only president going back to truman that has ended up with approval ratings higher than when he began his term was…bill clinton.

just withdrawing the forces from iraq would be a start, but he’d still have a long way to go to regain the trust of the american people.

  48. The Captain says:

captain, you think we hate bush just to hate bush. the truth is that if he ended this war, restored habeus corpus, ended the warrantless wiretapping, torture and black prisons, as a start, i’d have no problem with his ratings going up.

    it would be deserved.

    ————–

I don’t think you hate Bush. You just want your side to win politicaly.

But I agree with you in the sense that Bush needs to start trying to get his approval rating back up. He should start pushing for more conservative issues. Really lay them out there. We’ll back him up. And yes, he should start bringing some of our troops home from Iraq. Give them a rest already. We only need about 20,000 troops in Iraq to go after the al qaeda that has gone in there, in my opinion.

  49. . says:

“We don’t need 150k troops there. We only need about 20k to go after al qaeda in Iraq.”

    Around 30%

  53. lonesomerobot says:

They wanted to be volunteer to be good American soldiers… and they were put into unjustifiable situations where they lost their minds… lost their social limits that they grew up learning here in America. The evil that is Cheney crept its way down the chain of command… will only these lowest on the totem pole soldiers pay for this? What of the people that sent them there? And lied to them? And pumped christian vs muslim… good vs evil…. BS into their heads?

They should be here in America guarding our borders and training for actual threats to our nation… instead they will be sitting in jail for the rest of their lives? While those at the top that were trusted with these mens lives go free?

Bush should stand trial in their place. Cheney and all those around him should as well. Those Marines would NEVER have gone to Iraq and done these things on their own.

LMAO – I can see it now – a three sided civil war – Sunnis, Shias, Kurds and then factions within each, some in police uniforms, some in mufti. And in the middle of it all, 20,000 GIs zipping in about in armoured Humvees: “Al Qadea? Good, first on the left, one cross each.” (thanks Eric Idle)

What Bush should do is draw down most of our forces in Iraq, and let the Iraqis decide their own course.

By removing themselves into isolation on the mega-bases out in the Iraqi deserts, US forces may not be as vulnerable, because they can blast anything that comes near them.
They will not, however, be easily resupplied, and will be totally ineffectual in keeping the oil fields secure.
Which, of course, is what this whole fiasco is all about.

  115. david says:

The Captain, you are delusional. The Iraqis have been trying to take control of their country and the Bush administration has betrayed them. The WH tried to postpone elections, it rigged the one that was held, it vetoed the first pick for PM, it pays no attention to the present PM, and it’s still trying to bully them into passing outrageous legislation giving away Iraqi oil.

This is an occupation. The UN mandate –given after the UN first opined that the invasion was illegal– runs out on 31 Dec 2007. And the mandate states that the US/UK coalition is there at the pleasure of the Iraqi government and NOT to secure permanent military bases or browbeat the Iraqis into selling off their oil.

You know, if the USA left, it would not be a disaster. You are using the same arguments used by Churchill to oppose giving Freedom and Independence to India. Although their was considerable bloodshed as the two new nations were born, do you think anyone would want to go back to colonial India or go in to “clean up the mess”. Hahahaha.

What Reagan’s NSA chief knows –and what the ISG knew– is that the war in Iraq is LOST. And that Bush is childishly trying to pass this off onto the next president. Such a vanity project will degrade the US military, bankrupt American, and isolate the USA from the rest of the World. And you wonder why he’s so unpopular?

Ah, the joys of American discourse.

Yes, White Man’s Burden is a highly ironic poem and was oddly seized as straightforward by Americans at the time when they were considering building their own Empire. But the poem had a different response in the British Empire where irony is the order of the day.

Of course, the secret America discovered was not to bring any benefits to the colonies but merely steal the natural resources and have puppet tyrants keep the natives in line. How much more efficient than the British who actually “went native” and tried to provide good government.

    Or is it irony?………….;)

  196. barfly says:

Well, it’s understandable that Odom would call for withdrawl. He’s still got the blood of Iran/Iraq war dead on his hands. There’s Islamic terror, Israeli terror, and American terror. Don’t give me your reasonable sh!t. You don’t know any history. And you don’t know how the rebels were deliberately allowed to be slaughtered because Bush didn’t want them to win. In truth, Bush really didn’t have anything against Saddam.

Israel is a failed state. It costs billions of dollars to keep it from folding. And it’s largely because it’s being used to police the Middle East for America. Peace and security is possible. But it would come with independence for the other Muslim states in the region and America doesn’t want that; it would mean $100/barrel oil.

“But we should start withdrawing our forces. The Iraqis need to step up. And we should start standing down.

There are two things wrong with your line of thinking. The first is that the Iraqis are never going to “stand up” so we can “stand down”. They haven’t done it in 5 years and they aren’t going to do it if we start pulling out.

And your “watch Bush’s approval soar” is a joke, right. There is very little that Bush can do to save his presidency. The people are on to him and they don’t believe anything he says any longer. And when it comes to Iraq, they know who is to blame and who will be to blame through history.

  265. John Gilpins says:

“There is very little Bush can do to save his presidency.” So true! So true!

In fact, there’s very little Bush can do to save his retirement years.

Realistically, I think George W. Bush should read about O. J. Simpson’s life–post-trial. I think the scope of Bush’s life will be somewhat similar to Simpson’s life. Somewhat! Yes, Bush will have bodyguards but he’s not going to be totally insulated from negativity wherever he goes.

Bush may want to eat at X restaurant or Y restaurant, but the owner may say, “I don’t want your business. You gave us the business for eight years. Leave!”

Bush may want to play a round of golf at X Country Club or Y Country Club, but the owner may say,”I don’t want your business. You gave us the business for eight years. Leave.”

Eventually, Bush will rub shoulders with family members of deceased soldiers. As of now he has little contact with family members, and if he does everything is staged. That won’t happen in retirement.

Let’s just say it’s not going to be a pretty picture when angry family members, or the public in general, are talking to Bush in a negative tone. I’m not a controntational person, so I wouldn’t do it. On the other hand, I haven’t lost a family member in Iraq or Afghanistan. When a loved one has died due to mispresentations, lies, and deceit, that’s another story. As far as I know, it’s not against the law to talk to an ex-president in a negative tone. I think that’s going to happen on a regular basis.

Bush will probably spend most of his remaining years on his ranch or in Texas. He will mingle with wealthy cronies, and staged events, but that’s about it. He better not leave Texas, because other states are not going to be too welcoming.

Maybe O. J. Simpson and George W. Bush can become good friends. There both deserve each other.

  275. Probus says:

We can now add one more republican to a growing list of conservatives who disagree with the surge strategy of this president. They realize that this president is stubbornly refusing to see that under his leadership we have lost this war. Bush must set a date to get all troops out of Iraq. Right now we have no exit plan for Iraq. To not have one is both irresponsible and incompetent. The best way to support the troops to get them out of harm’s way.

The best way to support the troops is to bring them home safely back to their families. Cutting off funds is one way Congress can bring this surge and the war to a close. Congress has the power of the purse and they can use this power. Impeachment should clearly be an option for Congress. This president has given democrats plenty of reasons.

The US attorneys firing scandal which has led to 7 resignations of Justice department officials, the outing of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame, taking us to war under the false premise of WMDs in Iraq and links between Saddam and bin Laden that never existed. And now we can add the commutation of Libby’s prison sentence to that list. If the president is found to have commuted the sentence to protect himself or other in the White House he may have broken the law which can be an impeachable offense.

Yes. The Joker only said that Muslims had Muslim man’s burden long before whites had white man’s burden. Then david came in and started yapping about Israel and arabs for no reason.

  278. The Joker says:

    burqafly,
So if your not a Stalinist are you a neo-Nazi?
That’s the only other Westerners who support the Islamists!

  279. Mr. President says:

    The Joker,

It’s good to see your views again!
These Lefties get out of control sometimes.

    Not really.

  280. TerrytheTurtle says:

    TerrytheTurtle,
    You’re a liar.
In post after post you always take the Pro-Muslim position.
Only Leftists and the Neo-Nazis support the ZIslamists.
Admadinejad although a Rightwing Fascist has become a hero to many on the Left.
He hates Israel and America so the Leftists love him!
That’s why he gets great media coverage!

    Comment by The Joker — July 5, 2007 @ 10:57 pm

Oops, now you are making false, unsupported allegations. Bad luck for you. You seem to be a tool.

You must feel so powerful in your tiny and inconsequential trollie kingdom.

  282. TerrytheTurtle says:

But I would love to see you try to prove it, knobcheese.

  283. The Joker says:

    Mr Pres,
the Leftists never like to discuss the 7th Century Jihad against the Persians and Romans.
That’s because they were never taught it!
They can’t discuss anything outside of their PC brainwashing.
Mention the 7th Century Jihad, they get brain overload!
    Remember their mindset:
    Muslims=good
    Jews/Christians/Hindus=bad!

  284. The Joker says:

    TerrytheTurtle ,
Post 215 you were defending Ahmadinejad!

  285. Mr. President says:

    burqa-fly,

I’ve called you an Islamo-Stalinist before.
You denied it and told me to prove it.
Well, today you made Pro-Muslim Lefty comments that made excuses for muslims. You are an Islamo-Stalinist, and you want America to be ruled by Muslims.

  286. barfly says:

That’s the only other Westerners who support the Islamists!

    Comment by The Joker

Nice try, but just because I won’t stand for you smearing an entire religion for the acts of a few fanatics, this doesn’t make me an islamist. It does make you an alarmist, however.

  287. The Joker says:

    Terrythe dhimmi,
    That means you’re either
    A)Neo-Nazi
    B)Islamo-Stalinist aka Dhimmi

    which is it?

  288. Mr. President says:

    The Joker,

They also think that Muslims are peaceful.

    HA!!!

They are completely brainwashed, it isn’t even funny!!!

  289. The Joker says:

    burqafly,
You make swipes against Southern Americans.
So you have no moral high groud.
    So what are you?
    An Islamo-Stalinist aka Leftist-Dhimmi or Neo-Nazi’s.
That’s the westerners who support the Islamic cause!

  290. barfly says:

You are an Islamo-Stalinist, and you want America to be ruled by Muslims.

  291. Mr. President says:

Why would you try to say that if let them get their way, everything will be fine?

You are Pro-Muslim and you don’t even know it then.

  292. The Joker says:

    Mr Pres,
They never have an explanation for the 7th Century Jihad!
They didn’t even know about iyt!
That’s why when they start with their anti-Israel and crusader Islamists propaganda I through the 7th Century Jihad at them.
It destroys all other arguments as it’s the origin of all our problems!

  293. barfly says:

    “An Islamo-Stalinist aka Leftist-Dhimmi or Neo-Nazi’s.

So you know all the buzz words that give neocons a woody. It means nothing but wasted keystrokes.

  294. The Joker says:

    barfly,
Why do you alwqays defend the Islamic casuse but attack fellow Americans?
    Your a Muslim supporter!

  295. The Joker says:

    barfly,
    Neocon are also Pro-Muslim.
They believe Muslims can live in Democracy.
Thanks for reminding me about them.
I’ll add them to my Pro-Muslim list!

  296. Mr. President says:

    The Joker,

Mahomet was always pro-violence against everyone who was not his follower.

Muslims have not changed, they are told to be violent from the day they are born. They stole Israel and a lot of Africa and some of Europe, but these Lefty apologists don’t even know about that, and they still make excuses why we should let them get their way!

  297. John Gilpins says:

    The Joker,

I didn’t think of that. Good point! Maybe Bush should move to Saudi Arabia.

I wonder if you can rent a U-Haul boat to Saudi Arabia.

  298. barfly says:

It destroys all other arguments as it’s the origin of all our problems!

    Comment by The Joker

That would be Reagan’s arming the terrorists, thereby showing “the islamists” how cowardly and two-faced he was. That’s the boneheaded move that set the stage for all that has happened in Iraq.

  299. The Joker says:

    Mr. Pres,
Notice their silence when I mention the 7th Century Jihad!

  300. TerrytheTurtle says:

One post does not a proof make dipshit. So Ahmadinejad does not appear to be a genocidal maniac because he hasn’t killed all Iran’s jews – and that’s your complete argument for what?:

    1. Only Leftists and the Neo-Nazis support the ZIslamists.
    2. You’re a liar.
    3. In post after post you always take the Pro-Muslim position.

    TerrytheTurtle ,

    Comment by The Joker — July 5, 2007 @ 11:04 pm

And here I likened him to the American Taleban – hardly a defense, eh, pen*s breath?

    2. Ahmadinejad is ideologically opposed to traditional social democracy so its hard for him to be a ‘hero of the left’ – his ideology is closer to Regents University than to social democracy.

You are not doing very well so far… try again.

  301. Jay Randal says:

Joker > you were supposed to be in bed by 10PM tonight, so your mom is pissed off and your father might spank your bottom red for it > lol.

  304. The Joker says:

    barfly,
How about the Jihad of the 7th Century.
I see the silence in that.
I love your bashing of Reagan and defence of the Mulsims.
A true Dhimmi, you must defend your masters!

  305. TerrytheTurtle says:

    Mr. Pres,

    Comment by The Joker — July 5, 2007 @ 11:13 pm

Not exactly a worthy discussion, unless you want to talk about the Age of Exploration – you know, Pizarro, Sheridan, cholera-filled blankets, etc etc. The difference is that you can’t see that religious fanatics have called on their God to justify their horrific behavior all through history. It is the absence of fanaticism that guarantees peace.

  306. Zooey says:

    Mr. Pres,
Notice their silence when I mention the 7th Century Jihad!

    Because it is not relevant.

    cool.

  308. barfly says:

When you mentioned the 7th century jihad,
burqa-fly changed the subject and BLAMED AMERICA!!!

    Comment by Mr. President

No, I blamed Reagan. Only those who put party over country would conflate a true statement about Reagan into a generalized hatred of america. But it’s par for the course for cowards like you two.

  309. TerrytheTurtle says:

    3. In post after post you always take the Pro-Muslim position.

Hey Joker, since my post #215 notes Ahmadinejad is not a genocidal maniac (supportive) and my post #271 notes that I think he is a religious authoritarian (not supportive), just like Pat Robertson and the American Christo-fascists, I guess we need to call the firefighters to put out your pants. Where shall we send them?

  310. Mr. President says:

    Zooey,
It has everything to do with it.
That is when Muslims waged jihads that would eventually force the Europeans to start the crusades.

How dare you say that I am using The Joker!

At first I didn’t understand everything he was saying, but then I noticed that we agreed on a lot of things. Like the Muslim problems and the supreme court decisions.

  311. barfly says:

I love your bashing of Reagan and defence of the Mulsims.
A true Dhimmi, you must defend your masters!

    Comment by The Joker

If you “love it,” why does it upset you so much? Too bad you can’t handle the truth about the traitorous Reagan. Poor little child, I’ll quit bashing your fairy-tale hero, now.

  312. Zooey says:

    Comment by Mr. President — July 5, 2007 @ 11:21 pm

It’s always Muslims are good and america is bad!

  314. barfly says:

    “barfly,
How about the Jihad of the 7th Century.”

    How about the Children’s Crusade?

Google that, and see for yourself what blind allegiance to Christianity gets you, before ragging on muslims.

  315. david says:

Comment by Mr. President — July 5, 200

Where do you get sh!t like this? What utter nonsense.

And what are you talking about by some 7th century Jihad. That too is nonsense. It was in the 7th century that civil society began to reassert itself from the rubble of the Roman Empire. Charlemagne recreated the Holy Roman Empire, but I don’t see you dissing him.

The Caliphs who had the new moral foundation of the Koran didn’t need to do much conquoring with the sword. Arabia, Egypt, North Africa, Southern Italy, Turkey, and Spain were pretty much without any government or law.

The Caliphs who unified the Southern side of the Mediterranean restored water wells, built bridges & roads, and brought law & order. It’s just racism to look well upon the likes of Charlemagne but find the Caliphs to be bloodthirsty Jihadists. The truth is that the expansion of the Caliphate was swift and wide because there was a power vacuum and a great need for good government.

  316. Mr. President says:

    Zooey,
    It is relevant!!!
Muslims started the jihads BEFORE the crusades!!!
That means whenever they claim that Westerners started things, the are lying!!!
    I’m not using anybody.

  317. The Joker says:

    barqafly,
How about Clinton bombimng Serbia on behalf of the Al-Qaeda backed KLA.
    Care to discuss that?
I know, you’ll bash Reagan but defend the Muslims.
    You keep proving my point!

  318. barfly says:

  320. Mr. President says:

The Jihad of the 7th century was gainst the Eastern Roman Empire based in Constantinople.
At that time they had control over Syria, Egypt, North Africa and the visisgoths ruled Spain in their names.
The Muslims attacked the Romans at the battle of Yramuk in 636.
They then procedd to conquere Roman provinces.
    Charlemagn was a fraud.
he had no claim over the Roman throne as the Empror was ruling in Constantinople.
    He was a French Warlord

“The Caliphs who unified the Southern side of the Mediterranean restored water wells, built bridges & roads, and brought law & order.”
The Roman provinces already had roads, bridges, wells and law$order you liar!
    Islam was spread through conquest!

I guess the Joker should be taken at his word, he’s not a serious person.

The Joker, you don’t seem to read your own sources. The Byzantine Empire was imploding at the beginning of the 7th century. There was civil war and open revolt in all the provinces.

Mohammed united the Arabs, who had been oppressed by the Byzantines. It was relatively easy to take the weak Persian Empire and most of the provinces of the rather corrupt and bickering Byzantine Empire.

I’m glad you recognized that the Western Empire was defunct. But I’m perplexed at your dismissal of Charlemagne as he’s the man who defines your Western Values. Well, you don’t really have any Values, do you, The Joker?

  356. The Joker says:

    Zooey,

    I exposed his lies.
    he’s a loser!
    Comment by The Joker

I’m sorry Joker, I don’t agree. The US has created it’s own problems separate from Islam by our policies in this world. We are responsible for ourselves and our behavior.

  361. Mr. President says:

    david the Dhimmi,
    Mahomet UNITED the arabs!!!!!
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More like he destroyed their place of worship and threatened to slaughter them all if they did not follow him!!!

What kind of propaganda have you been reading?!!!!!!!!!!!

  362. Zooey says:

The funny thing is that they haven’t even studied it or learned about it, all they know is what they have been told by apologists!
They have no idea about the brainwashing in most Islamic countries, if they did they would know that Muslims are told to hate them!
    Comment by Mr. President

Shame on you, Mr President. It doesn’t matter what Muslims are told, it matters how we conduct ourselves in the world.

  363. The Joker says:

    David,
    Just caught you again!

“Mohammed united the Arabs, who had been oppressed by the Byzantines. ”
    The Romans(Byzantines) never controlled Arabia!
    Ha look at the map!

“It was relatively easy to take the weak Persian Empire and most of the provinces of the rather corrupt and bickering Byzantine Empire.”

The Romans and Persians just finished fighting a 20 year war!
    they were both weak.
However the Romans and Persiansd putted up a fight.
I just read my sources and you lie!

“There was civil war and open revolt in all the provinces.”
    No there wasn’t!

  364. Mr. President says:

    Zooey,
    It does matter.
They are told that YOU are evil and they would have no problem killing you because you do not cover your hair. The are told that the koran commands them to use what ever means necessary to spread Islam, even if it means to suicide bomb innocent non-Muslims.

  365. TerrytheTurtle says:

Well Exley, it’s been fun…. enjoy the 7th century. I’m sure you could enjoy a serious discussion of the to and fro of early Christian and Muslim history if you could get your blood pressure down and put your pants out.

  366. The Joker says:

“I’m perplexed at your dismissal of Charlemagne as he’s the man who defines your Western Values”

The real Emperor was in Constantinople!
    Chalemagne was a french warlord.
The Pope crowned him Emperor because a Femail Irene was in charge in Constantinople.

If the Muslims had not attacked the Romans, they would’ve recovered and eventually reconquer the Lomabrd controlled parts of Italy, France and maybe Britian.
I don’t called them Byzantines since that’s a French term.
    They were the Romans.
Hence the Roman Empire still existed in the 7th Century.
    You said it didn’t.
    You lied!

  367. marlow says:

I’m sorry, a little late to the conversation…. did the AYrabs come here and occupy OUR country and kill millions of our citizens while I was at work? Are we blaming the Romans for something now? What happened to Bill? Catch me up, someone.

  368. The Joker says:

    David,
I thought you said the Roman Empire didn’t exist?
    Why are you Pro-Muslim?
Would you support a Muslim invasion of America?

  369. Zooey says:

    Zooey,

    Comment by Mr. President

And YOU are just like them, and worse. Trying to spread fear and hatred, as if we have no means of protecting ourselves, and we are mindless sheep. You may live your life in fear and disgust, and use people to your heart’s content, but I will have none of it. AND I will never be forced to convert to Islam or any other religion.

    Isn’t this amazing? And ridiculous?

  371. The Joker says:

    marlow,
The whole Western-Muslim conflict began in the 7th Century when the Muslims invaded the Roman Empire.
Had the Romans won, there would be less conflict!
Islam is a religion of Conquest.
    It must be stopped!
The best way to stop it is too use Alternative Enrgy, freeze all Muslims’ assets and deport Muslims.
Let’s cut them off and see them starve and kill each other!

  372. The Joker says:

David is now searching Muslim websites to see how to spin their propaganda!

  373. Mycelium says:

    Great rant Gerald but…

Few are going to take to the streets over the travesties of this war or presidency for that matter. I’ve been there amongst the few whom have. Got tired of being outnumbered and shouted down by ditto-head types incited to counter rally by their local AM reightwing stations. I’ve been called every “smear”name the reighties thunk up-the least of them being coward. (More on that in a minute.) I’m sure the FBI et al didn’t take all those pictures for nothing either. He!! even Cindy Sheehan gave up taking to the streets and she lost a son.

Why are people not outraged to the point of public outcry? Because what goes on doesn’t seem to affect them personally. No family in the military equals no stake in it. Those with family in the military hope in vain that BushCo is doing the right thing to the point they’ll swallow any sunshine story the think tanks dream up. Same goes with the “love America” “patriotic” types hypnotized with an image of America for the good of all. (My only explanation for the success of faux news.)

This administration is crooked to the point of comedy if it wasn’t so tragic. Average Joe doesn’t care much because they don’t “feel” the effects. (Unless they have suffered economically of course.) Most folks I work amongst pay little attention to politics. They got a pretty good idea that Bush is a criminal but “heck…all politicians are crooked are they not?” “Nothing I can do about it”.

Yes people need to hit the streets. But what could make that happen?

Few will dispute that the military is suffering from a severe lack of manpower. Tour extensions and other factors are taking its toll on our forces…big time. I wish it weren’t so but America needs a strong military right?

This brings up the point of cowardice. Why hasn’t Bush called for a reinstatement of the draft when the military so desperately needs one? I say he’s scared to death of the political repercussions. As well he should be. Could you imagine the people in the streets if he were to do so? I believe that Bush is a yellow spine coward for not utilizing the draft to re-man the military. I would like to see him asked why he hasn’t resorted to a draft then watch him squirm with an answer.

Wanna end this war? Reinstate the draft!

  374. marlow says:

Well, I don’t consider myself an historian, but wer’e talking about the Eastern Roman Empire, right? My understanding is that Rome, per se, fell a few hundred years prior, right? Goths, Vandals and assorted other barbarians?

  375. david says:

I’m sorry to say, The Joker, but you are wrong. Try checking out the names of the Eastern Roman Emperors or Byzantine Emperors for the period you think you understand. Phocas is a central figure, and he comes to an unpleasant end. And yes, it’s hard not to describe the need use of troops to put down rebellions east and west as civil war.

I think you need to take a closer look at your map. I’d pay particular attention to the inhabited areas and ignore the deserts. I know, it’s hard when you have to actual pay attention to details; you Rumsfeldian types tend to just wing it.

  376. Zooey says:

  381. The Joker says:

    david ,
    Another lie!
The Roman Emperor at the time of the Ilsamic Invasions was Heraclius!
He overthrew Phocas who was losing the war to Pesia!
Heraclius countered attack and defeated the Pesians!
The Empire only had a respite of 10 years to recover before the Jihad.

“And yes, it’s hard not to describe the need use of troops to put down rebellions east and west as civil war.”
    What rebellions genious?
The Empire was at peace after Heraclious defeated Persia and before your Jihadi heroes came onto the scene!

As for yor map comments, Mecca and Medina were never Roman possesions!
That’s where your hero Mohamad the Dog hating pedophile through conquest and bloodshed united the Arab tribes!
So keep living your Pro-Islamic lies david.
    You’re a good Dhimmi!
    Romans=Bad
    Muslims=Good!

“Well, I don’t consider myself an historian, but wer’e talking about the Eastern Roman Empire, right? My understanding is that Rome, per se, fell a few hundred years prior, right? Goths, Vandals and assorted other barbarians?”

    Not true.
In the 6th Century the Roman Emperor Justinain reconquered North Africa from the Vandals and Italy from the Ostrogoths.
The Romansd held onto Carthrage for the next 170 years until the Jihadists took it from them.
The Eastern Empire was a Roman possesion until the 750’s when the Pope rebelled against the Emperor.
So The Romans were still around and took back Rome.

Their plan was cut short when two plane crashes revealed it. “Liberal media” did not want to report on it. Kerry led investigation into it. I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter’d visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp’d on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock’d them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Cheneymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Your dear Emperor Heraclius did have a thing about Persia and adopted the Persian handles when he conquored them. He also ditched Latin for Greek and severed ties with the Roman heritage.

Well, all the fuss about the Caliphate has to do with an absurd attempt to deny the legitimacy of the Arab World –something Edward Gibbon found very impressive, more impressive than Christian Europe.

The bizarre hope of Byzantium is an attempt to create some sort of tradition of Western Values –although I find it dubious to use the compass this way as most Europeans would refer to Byzantium as the Orient.

The truth is that the Byzantine Empire was corrupt and provided bad government. The Caliphate, by comparison, was very modern and sophisticated. But as far as bloodthirsty goes, they were not the villains that the warmongers in the White House want us to see. Islamo- this or that is just plain absurd.

I used to be a stage actor. Sometimes you would have performances that would drag on and on..

but other times, they were few, you would be waiting backstage for the lights to go down, going thru whatever routine you used to get ready to go on, and then …

curtain call. It was all gone. As if you hadn’t been there. And they were the ones you did it for.

    Comment by Zooey — July 6, 2007 @ 2:11 am

    Brilliant.

I can’t help but suspect, that all the GOP veterans are speaking out loud now, not so much because they’ve started being reasonable, but because they know Mr Bush is badly damaging their party and it’s accompanying interest groups.

The disgust that so many Americans show for the GOP and the Democratic Party alike, might put an end to the two-party-rule that both are so comfortable with. A honest, independent candidate, like e.g. Vice-President Al Gore, could shake up the system badly. I am very sorry that he seemed to rule out a candidacy definitely.

We had a similar situation years ago in Germany, when what used to be a three party rule was shaken by the successes of the Green Party. Politicians scuttered about panicked like cockroaches when you turn on the light. For quite a while, the ascent of the Greens changed politics for the better, because it reminded the old parties, that being in power was not a given right but was given to them by the people. Sadly, the Greens are as corrupted now as the others (took them about 20 years to get there) but we have a new kid on the block now, “The Left” party.

For Mr Bush this means, that an increasing number of GOP heavyweights is willing to figuratively burn him at the stake in order to hold onto their share of power and influence. And, although Political bombs like the one General Odom detonated here, serve to rid the GOP of a damaging leader, not for the sake of the country but for the sake of one’s own political interests.

So, I’m off now. I got “The Assault on Reason” yesterday and I have some serious reading to do. BTW I bought Glenn Greenwald’s book, too, for good measure, so this should keep me busy until July 21st.

I used to be Keith until two other Keith’s appear on TP

  572. The Captain says:

“plain spoken??!!?? – i can never understand exactly what the f**k he is talking about whenever he delivers one of his language-mangling speeches”

My two favorite Bush speeches were when he stood atop the rubble with the megaphone, and when he addressed the joint session of congress after 9/11. These were great speeches.

  573. The Captain says:

Keith G, I’m jelous that Zooey likes you and not me.

  574. Gregor Samsa says:

Bush supporters: What do you have to say about Gen. Odom’s statement? What do you make of it?

Is he now a “radical leftist” too?

    Is he “emboldening” the enemy?

    Does he “hate the troops”?

Does it hurt to see Reagan conservatives disavow The Decider?

  575. Arn Gunnutes says:

I love your bashing of Reagan and defence of the Mulsims.
A true Dhimmi, you must defend your masters!

    Comment by The Joker

If you “love it,” why does it upset you so much? Too bad you can’t handle the truth about the traitorous Reagan. Poor little child, I’ll quit bashing your fairy-tale hero, now.

    Comment by barfly — July 5, 2007

Hello, I’m Ronald Reagan. Still dead and still in hell.

You are RIGHT, Mr. Barfly so continue, PLEASE.

I was a TRAITOR in Iran/Contra as well as my veep, EVIL Bush 43, and after he PARDONED ALL the TREASONOUS criminals, who now work in EVIL Bush 41’s crime stable, he pardoned an

INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST, Orlando Bosch, still living in Miami.

Satan LOVES the EVIL of the Bushes, Cheneys and their monkeys…

Satan Bless he Bushes and Cheneys!!

    Treasonously yours from hell,

Traitor Ronnie and his Master Satan

  576. The Joker says:

    david,
    CAUGHT YOU IN ANOTHER LIE!
    Edward Gibbons was anti-Christian.
He was the one who started the whole Pro-Muslim view of history.
The Caliphate was ganster operation based on conquest and enslavement. The Christians were 2nd class citizens and had to pay Jiyaza tax and their word was good in a court of law.
Learn some facts before you speak!
The Emperor Heraclius never conquered Persia.
He defeated the Persiand to defend his Empire.
    He didn’t annex Persian territory.
He made Greek the officail languag e since that was the language spoken by the ruling class.
The Roman capital was Constantinople not Rome.
If they Eastern Romans had no influence why did they still contol 60% of Roman territory including Rome?
As for calling Byzantium the orient, that was a French propaganda technique done by the French warlord Chalemagne.
The Eastern Empire was a continuation of the Romamn Empire.
In fact in the 10th and 11th Centurires under the Macedonian Emperor Nicheporous, John Tzimisces and Basil II the Eastern Empire took back Crete, Cyprus, Armenia and Syria from the Muslims.
Since you love the Caliphate so much move to Iran and Saudi Arabia!

  577. Katie says:

    # 209 “There wouldn’t be a problem if the Muslims could just act civilized for a change.”

There wouldn’t be a problem if the Americans could just act civilized for a change. There I fixed that for you Mr. Prez.

I can’t think of anything less civilized than invading a country that posed no harm to you and lied to do it. I can’t think of anything less civilized than being responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent victims. I can’t think of anything less civilized than kidnapping people and “rendering” them to countries to have them tortured. I can’t think of anything less civilized than holding people indefinitely without charging them with crimes and without allowing them the ability to defend themselves.

The crimes we have committed pale in comparison to the crimes the “Islamofaschists” have committed.

  578. Muhammad Atta says:

    Hey trollie morons,

How come none of you were wetting your beds about Islamic terrorist on 9/10/01 and before?

    Comment by Zooey — July 5, 2007 @ 10:19 pm

Why do you have your heads in the sand AFTER 9/11/01?

  579. bogtrotters says:

  580. hellinabucket says:

Atta, nobody here has there head in the sand after 9/11/01. That’s a complete farse. Simply put, if we would have put half this much energy, money and lives into Afghanistan while continuing to squeeze Saddam with the sanctions and military no fly zones in place there would have already been an internal overthrow in Iraq and we could have supported it without having our soldiers as targets.

So if you continue to muddy up the water by confusing the two (Iraq and who attacked us on 9/11) it will be you who is lost.

    Sad sack.

  581. Zooey says:

Why do you have your heads in the sand AFTER 9/11/01?
    Comment by Muhammad Atta — July 6, 2007 @ 10:07 am

Only trolls and bedwetters have their heads in the sand, dingbat.

  582. marlow says:

So this is the argument here, that the Late “Roman” empire at Byzantium didn’t destroy the muslims and so now we’re suffering the legacy of that failure?

  583. Michael A. Whitmore says:

Unless impeachment proceedings are implemented, then the history of the George W. Bush adminsitration will read better than it lived. We cannot afford that, considering we must live on this good earth and deal with all people on this earth. The middle east is, again, unstable, thanks to George W. Bush. The more we continue this “crap” in Irag, the more enemies we are breeding. Whatever happened to talking to a perceived enemy. Communicate and be honest with the American public and with the world. This war was wrong. It must end and we must admit to the world that we were wrong. We cannot win this without a lot of honestly and humility. Our sacrificial lamb is George W. Bush, so that we all might live in peace. What’s more harmful to our future? A disgraced President, or a broken country?

  584. Anti Nazi says:

War crimes, crimes against humanity, treason, lying, war profiteering, etc, etc, are excellent reasons to Impeach, prosecute and execute ANYBODY.
The prosecution of such criminals is necessary to demonstrate some semblance of decency to the world, otherwise it’s obvious Americans were complacent in the crimes and will be treated accordingly, worldwide.
The empire is crumbling inside and out and the”barbarians” have been at the gates for sometime due to”blowback”,as the CIA call KARMA.
I know there are plenty of good people that are opposed to this administration that live in the states but all will be blamed,as the Germans and Japanese were for a very long time.
BUSHCO have soiled Americans reputations worse than ever and it’s going to take a very long time and a sustained multi-dimensional effort to change the world’s well justified opinion.
Good luck with the public relations.
