It’s sad that 26% out there are so clueless, so gullible or so greedy and corrupt themselves that they give this miserable failure of an administration a positive approval rating.
Many of the polls for Truman were highly inaccurate becasue they were telephone polls. Many middle and all lwer class people lived without phones in their homes at that time. I think only the Nixon polls can be considered comparable.
I wouldn’t hire Bush to cut my lawn….so yes, I think he deserves the ratings he gets….and all the other Republicans who supported him and his ‘popular’ policies….
The Bush DeadEnders and the Nixon Deadenders are basically the same type of people. Bush could kill a kitten on the front lawn of the White House and they’d rush to his defense. They are the ones with Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Hilarious. “Shrub” spends most of his free time “clearing brush.” And you still don’t trust him to mow your lawn! Of course, if Bush were hired to mow your lawn (1) he’d tell you it’ll take two hours; (2) he’d still be there after five weeks, but “making progress;” (3) he’d tell you that mowing the lawn will pay for itself by selling the compost and he’d then send you a bill for $55,000; and (4) he would give a medal to the guy he subcontracted to trim the hedges and who accidently burned down your garage.
Truman’s biggest blow to his popularity came when he fired General MacArthur — which is what really did his popularity in. His unpopularity was enhanced by Sen. Joseph McCarthy, whose political star was rising by making the threat of Communism his personal issue. McCarthy never missed an opportunity to make Truman his scapegoat and to portray him as “soft on the reds”. The American people ate this up — much like the way they have swallowed the whole “War on Terror” bill of goods in this generation.
Time vindicated Truman, though. On many lists, he is regarded as one of the top ten best presidents in our history.
re: #24. Yeah. Interesting that it was not the Lewinsky/impeachment period. I wonder what explains that? It was probably that who-does-this-asshole-think-he-is period when the washington elite felt threatened by Clinton’s lack of pedigree.

Remember, he isn’t out yet! I wonder what it will end up being when more of what the Neocon’s have been doing surfaces? I was in a family for more than 26 years who is part of this and their job is to launder Drug and Gun Running criminal money straight into property using Mortgage Fraud with Big Banks. By the way, the Gun Running part is already in the news (ie. Chiquita and Drummond) and the Drug part and who else is involved isn’t well known yet.
Truman’s biggest blow to his popularity came when he fired General MacArthur
Isn’t it funny that this was one of Truman’s biggest blunders, but Bush has forced so many of the “commander on the ground”, he supposedly listens to, to resign and yet, the 26%ers still think he is peachy.
I pity whatever candidate the Republicans put up in 2008. He’s going to have to do a lot of running to escape the black hole that is Bush’s popularity.
It would also be interesting for the statistics of how long those low poll ratings lasted, because any one of them could be a blip on the screen, but we all know that G.W. Bush has been stuck in the doldrums for many months now.
Marty Didier: Thanks for the tip. Let’s check it out….more dirt to come, that’s certain. And when the avalanche of dirty deeds begins to come down the mountain, it’s going to steamroll over all the crooks and liars and flatten them.

If he’s impeached will his approval rating increase? Let’s find out. The pundicks so enjoy comparing Bush’s unethical behavior to Clinton’s that they should really put “Clinton did it too” to the test.
Could Bush’s impeachment result in no time served or aquittal in the Senate or both? Let’s find out.
Clinton’s low point in approval did not come during the impeachment process. Would that be true for Bush? Let’s find out.
Does lying about National Security result in a harsher punishment than lying about an extra-marital affair? Let’s find out.
These trolls will always trot out the “congress has lower ratings” blather. They fail to realize two things: 1) the congressional approval rating is also hanging around the mid-20’s, and 2) we disapprove of congress because they aren’t doing enough to take out the trash.
And what is it with the tendency of the far right to use “democrat” as an adjective (as in “democrat congress”)??? Rush does it and so do most of the right wing talking heads — constantly, like they all got the same memo or something. Is this supposed to be insulting? A put down? As a Democrat, I don’t feel insulted — I am just confused about the lack of good grammar.
Would one of the trolls please explain to me why the bad grammar is supposed to be a taunt or an insult to me somehow? Because I truly don’t get it.
It is interesting that Truman was our last president without a college degree, and that Mr. Bush has a Yale MBA.
Like Bush, Doug MacArthur came from a long lineage of family members in his profession. Unlike the Bush clan, the MacArthur clan was highly regarded as embodying the highest standards of the family’s profession.
Unlike Bush, MacArthur actually did create a democracy - in Japan, and a rather socialist one at that, though MacArthur was himself a republican. And MacArthur, literally from his deathbed, warned Lyndon Johnson to stay out of Vietnam. Advice that was not heeded.
As far as the current President’s unpopularity, all I can say is that the current congress has nothing like the statesmanship of the immediate post-WWII generation serving in congress at the time of the Nixon impeachment.
My home state of Arkansas is a perfect example. Contrast our current senators to their predecessors, Senators Fulbright and McClelland. It makes one weep to see how far we have fallen.
My greatest hope is that the influence of the baby boom generation, in business, in politics, and in foreign affairs, will soon start to wane.
I sincerely believe that he’ll beat Truman’s numbers. You can’t fool all of the people all of the time. At least his numbers are trending in the right direction.
Eskwaya and missmolly: another reason for Truman’s low ratings was the right wing smear campaign against him because he wanted to expand Medicare to everyone. Now, that was a damn good idea then and it still is today.
Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld will go the way of Augusto Pinochet. There will be countries in which they cannot set foot for fear of being arrested and brought before the World Court to answer for war crimes. Bush might even live out his days on his ranch in Paraquay rather than face charges of treason in the U.S. Twenty years from now very few people will admit to having supported him.
Low ratings for congress are also due to the fact that people don’t understand how congress works. We don’t teach Civics anymore. People commonly display this lack of understanding on this site with their incessant “Impeach the bastards” rhetoric. Again, if you can’t get enough votes to override a veto, you damn well can’t pull off an impeachment. Democrats cannot impeach without the support of republicans, but somehow many of you reserve your anger for Democrats. I find this strange and depressing.
Can we have a running bet on how low Pres Bush’s numbers will go?
Saddest thing is, he can always rely on the brain dead trolls who gather at ThinkProgress to show their support for all of his failed policies -no matter the death toll.
History goes to those who write it (and control the popular dissemination of that writing) and the people who control that part of our society are not Progressive Democrats. Over the past thirty years I have watched the corporate oligarch media ressurrect Nixon’s reputation, promote an entirely mythical Reagan reputation and continue to smear and belittle Democrats like Kennedy with falsehoods and distortions simply because they can, he’s dead. This poll shows there was a time when Americans innate good sense shined a light, however briefly, in their troubled lives.
Over the past thirty years I have watched the corporate oligarch media ressurrect Nixon’s reputation, promote an entirely mythical Reagan reputation and continue to smear and belittle Democrats like Kennedy with falsehoods and distortions simply because they can, he’s dead.
No conservative has smeared him at all. Tax cutting defense hawk John Kennedy is no modern Democrat!
Oh, wait, his approval rating was in the high 60’s during his impeachment.
I long for the good old days when we had peace and prosperity and the only thing the country had to worry about was the impeachment of a popular President.
Now, we have fear and endless war and we have a president with a 26% approval rating and we can’t get him impeached!
I see He’s12 got the memo that right-wingers are supposed to claim that John Kennedy was actually a conservative and Richard Nixon was a Liberal.
And I think they believe it because to them, Conservative = Good and Liberal = Bad. That’s why their claim that “Bush is a liberal” makes perfect sense. They loved his policies until his approval ratings headed south. NOW all of a sudden they’ve discovered that he’s a Borrow-and-Spender, and a Big Government guy and, at 26% approval, they figure that means he’s not really conservative — even though the biggest deficits and the greatest expansions of federal government have all happened under Republican presidents.
In all honesty, I don’t really see Bush’s approval ratings going much lower than this. There’s about a quarter of the country who see Bush as a man of God, as a guy they’d like to have a beer with, as a defender of their values, as the very definition of American manliness. They won’t be swayed from their opinion by any number of exposures of his dishonesty, cowardice, or hatred of the principles upon which this country was founded.
No Surprise here. Worst. President. Ever.

July 6th, 2007 at 10:58 pmWhy bother to impeach? Bush is like a cancer growing on the Republic Party. The Republics will never win another election–even if they cheat.

No, not really, but neither of them were moonbats.

Ahhhhh, cutandpaste namecalling! Always elevates the discourse.
July 7th, 2007 at 11:51 amIn all honesty, I don’t really see Bush’s approval ratings going much lower than this.
