Iraq war costs could top $1.4 trillion.»

According to a new report by the non-partisan Congressional Research Service, “in the first half of this fiscal year, the Defense Department’s “average monthly obligations for contracts and pay is running about $12 billion per month, well above the $8.7 billion in FY2006.” Additionally, depending on troop levels, total funding could reach “about $980 billion to $1.4 trillion by 2017.”

Gore your “prophet” is as much in bed with Israel as any republican or he would have never chosen Joe as a running mate.

Clinton spoke out as loudly about the need to keep nuke out of the Iranians hands as Bush ever has.

Clinton sent us to war in Kosovo were there was no oil which we desperately need and our military is STILL there.

Under Clinton his inept and corrupt Reno led the attacks on Americans in Ruby Ridge and Waco. At least the initial invasion of Iraq went better than that.

Pelosi and Reid funded the war and renewed the Patriot Act.

All this and so much more but yet somehow you continue to repeat this absurd mantra that if we elect more of them things will change. Please wake up before it is to late.

Apparently, Conservatives forgot what ‘conservative’ means about the same time Bush was handed the presidency over six years ago. Nothing about the last six years has been truly conservative. Radically aggressive, yes; Conservative, not even close.

Now that those “conservatives” have all but disappeared, they have left us holding the bag. And so, here we are, four years, several billion dollars, and countless deaths later, wondering how we will ever get out of this mess.

Thank you, Bush cultists, for the horrible chaos you were accomplices in creating. Thanks for nothing.

What went wrong here? With three equal branches of government how did one, the executive, manage to get control of the budget and all that money for war? 39. Troll Says:

    Gus
They could easily have not funded the war but they lacked the spine. They have betrayed us all.

  40. hellinabucket Says:

  41. Jackie Says:

American love that fact that the Bush Administration is spending all this money on waste. American believe that it’s ok for the GOP to steal taxpayers money and leave hard working Americans with nothing. Look Bush took the soldiers money for medical care and after two days Americans had no problem letting our troops live like dogs and get no medical help. It’s more important that the Iraq people and the terrorist get the best health care. The price tag for the Bush Administration will be cost to 7 trillion dollars and yes it will be blamed on Bill Clinton.
Now when the next President says taxes have to go up it will be blamed on the Democrats not one GOP will be blamed. Bush has successfully made Americans dumb and stupid who will follow idiots and just say what their told. Libby used taxpayers money to pay his criminal fine and Americans have no problem paying a convicted felon’s fines.

  42. Tundra Says:

When do the other two branches wake up and say “no” the funding is wrong and illegal?

The day they really want to wake up. Right now the war is rallying people around them like they have never seen. The campaign money is coming in hand over fist for the Democrat candidates, there are no complaints about campaign finance issues this time, the small donors are all going to them. They have no real interest in ending the war, until after the election.

I think they are all playing watch the left hand with the war.

The conservatives will plan on a huge push in anti insurgent activity in the half year before the election (Which will result in less attacks and increased stability over there). “Find” Bin Laden and capture/put him on trial.

Their numbers will go up, the dems got the up front cash, everyone is happy, they meet for beer later and giggle.

  45. Rick Says:

“Under Clinton his inept and corrupt Reno led the attacks on Americans in Ruby Ridge and Waco. At least the initial invasion of Iraq went better than that.”

I’ll give you Waco, but Ruby Ridge? That happened in August of 1992.

So how come Koresh didn’t just surrender to the ATF when they launched their initial raid? Why did he and his followers open fire on the ATF?
And lastly, should the feds have just left the Branch Davidians alone?

If it had been a raid on a crackhouse in South Central LA where the gangmembers opened fire on federal agents, and a number of children were killed, would there still be an outcry about rights violations, excessive force, and abuse of power?

I have no doubts that the aisles are crossed by some. I also firmly believe that they have lost sight of what is best for this country.

  71. Probus Says:

Paul Wolfowitz said the war would pay for itself. He was wrong. When Gen. Shinseki said that the Iraq war would cost billions of dollars he was fired. Bush owes the American people an explanation as to why this war has cost so much. And why he has been so wrong about how much it would cost.

I posed that same question to my conservative brother recently and he immediately got angry stating that nobody would have known. This is one of their core faults and it’s also something they refuse to acknowledge. 5 years of supplemental funding without a single plan to pay for this is irresponsible and has damaged this country for years to come.

I said this earlier, What happened to the fiscally responsible republicans? Gone the way of the Dodo I suppose.

  75. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

And why he has been so wrong about how much it would cost.

    Comment by Probus

Well outside the fact that Herr Brusch is one painfully dumb sack of doorknobs, I’ve read a couple of times over the last few yrs that the secret GOP “master plan” ** cough… cough…** is to run up such a huge deficit for the government tht it collapses, has to sell off all it’s “assets” (bye-bye national parks…), and retract permanently.

This was supposedly begun by Reagan, who, until Brusch came along, held the dubious distinction of running up the worst deficits in US history. Brushc is now BY FAR the big Weiner! He has run up a bigger debt than ALL prior presidents combined, including Ray-gun.

Sounds far-fetched? Look at what’s happening. Who was that sleaze from CA who got bounced out of Congress last fall - Pombo? Wasn’t he the one pushing to sell off parks?

  76. david Says:

What to make of the bizarre echo signatures of Troll and Mr Pee in posts #24 and #25 respectively? I’m no techno-geek, but I took it as proof Mr Pee and Troll were one and the same.

It’s particularly sad when trolls need to converse with themselves.

BTW, m12, do you know if that $1.4 trillion includes the costs of treating the wounded veterans coming home? I suspect not. Now that’s socialized medicine that ain’t even necessary. No war, no wounded.

And with universal healthcare, you have something to show at the end of the day: a healthy public working hard to build a nation. What is war good for? Absolutely NOTHING. It’s pure waste and destruction. That $1.4 trillion has just been p!ssed away by neo-cons who believe the stupid fallacy of the broken shop window.

I know why the neo-cons are sh!tting bricks. There will be a massive inquiry in 2009 and dozens will be going down. How many White House officials have resigned so far this year? Rats leaving a sinking ship. And remember: one of Bush’s first presidential directives was sealing the papers of Reagan and Pappy Bush. A curious thing. Would we know of wrongdoing patterns had we’d been able to read what tricks this Gang Who Can’t Shoot Straight had been up to in 1987?

  77. david Says:

All wars are hideously expensive. They always have been. That’s why most people in other countries wonder why America always wants to go for the military solution. It makes no friends and it’s incredibly wasteful.

The Middle East has largely been a cash sinkhole ever since the failure to resolve the Six Day War. It’s never ended, really.

BTW, what was with the drunken Mr Pee trying to pick fights with a non-existent ace. I take it he can’t deal with ordinary folks, he needs an arch-nemesis.

  78. Briseadh na Faire Says:

    REMEMBER THIS?

Permanent repeal of the estate tax would cost more than $1 trillion over the first ten years in which its cost would be fully felt, 2012-2021.

  79. david Says:

Well, they should just confiscate any income over $500,000 and take a one time capital tax of 50% of all estates worth more than $100 million.

The amounts suggested by BushCo in the runup to the war are on the Architects of the War page.

The 1.7 billion was for rebuilding. 50- 60 billion was estimated for the war.

Some of us had food stuff flying out of our noses when we heard the estimates. (Lesson, never listen to the news while eating).

Wars are financed by fiat money. Fiat = faux. Which is, in the electronic age, not even much paper. The Federal Reserve System, which is not actually part of the US Government - just a bunch of the biggest banks in the East Coast Financial District- loans the US Government the money. It doesn’t have the money, it just issues a Federal Reserve Note, the US Government enters that amount into their accounts, and it is added to the economy. Pretty nifty huh?

We end up paying for this through inflation. That’s why it hit double digits under Carter. Are you prepared for what it will get to soon?

WHY do CEOs need to make $400 million a year?

    Doncha love GOP math?

There were not 900k refugees as they predicted.

    Yup, we were wrong:

Warning over spiralling Iraq refugee crisis

    Matt Weaver
    Thursday December 7, 2006
    Guardian Unlimited

The surging violence in Iraq has created what is becoming the biggest refugee crisis in the world, a humanitarian group said today.
A report (pdf) by Washington-based Refugees International said an influx of Iraqis threatened to overwhelm other Middle Eastern countries, particularly Syria, Jordon and Lebanon.

Last month, the UN estimated that 100,000 people were fleeing the country each month, with the number of Iraqis now living in other Arab countries standing at 1.8 million.

Today’s report came as George Bush and Tony Blair were due to discuss the situation in Iraq, which the bipartisan Iraq Study Group yesterday described as “grave and deteriorating”.

Refugees International said the acceleration in the numbers fleeing Iraq meant it could soon overtake the refugee crisis in Darfur.

“We’re not saying it’s the largest [refugee crisis], but it’s quickly becoming the largest,” spokeswoman Kristele Younes said. “The numbers are very, very scary.”

They claimed that 500,000 lives would be taken and they were wrong.

The October 2006 Lancet (October 29, 2004) study estimated total excess deaths up to July 2006. Total deaths (civilian and non-civilian) include all additional deaths due to increased lawlessness, degraded infrastructure, poorer healthcare, etc.. The survey estimated 654,965 excess deaths related to the war. The 2006 study involved surveys between May 20 and July 10, 2006. More households were surveyed than during the 2004 study, allowing for a 95% confidence interval of 392,979 to 942,636 excess Iraqi deaths. The result was disputed by President Bush based both on the number of deaths and the methodology.

Although the British Government initially tried to dispute the accuracy of the Lancet survey, the UK Ministry of Defence’s chief scientific adviser later said the survey’s methods were “close to best practice” and the study design was “robust”. The Lancet survey figure is the only statistically accurate casualty figure which is intended to show the total excess deaths (rather than lower limits, provided by surveys of only those deaths reported to authorities or media agencies).

The methodology in that study is what the US Government uses and teaches other countries to use for disaster calculations. Like tsunamis, earthquakes, war, etc.

They predicted we would go through whole batalians in one day, and they were wrong.

They claimed the Iraqi people wouldn’t draft a constitution, and they were wrong.

These claims were made by who and when? Not that the Iraqi constitution is working…

Liberals were wrong about everything about Iraq. They have no credibility on the issue.

Don’t you mean the Bush Administration?

    - WMD

    - Connection to 9/11

    - Supporting and having connections with terrorists.

    - Being greeted as liberators.

    - The war would be over in no more than 6 months - we could bring our troops home.

Darn right we were wrong. We just weren’t wrong enough.
