Kristol Offers Neoconservative Prescription For America’s Woes: ‘Be Happy!’

kristol223412.jpgIn Time Magazine yesterday, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol wrote a rosy piece on why Americans should get over their “adolescent moodiness” and embrace the “heartening developments” of the past six years.

In the op-ed, Kristol came to the conclusion that “no other people in human history have ever had it quite so good” as Americans. But in reaching that false conclusion, Kristol severely distorts and even lies about major developments:

Claim #1: There have been “very limited terrorist successes in Europe or even in the Middle East.” Between 2005 and 2006, international terrorist attacks increased 29 percent, reported U.S. intelligence. Forty-five percent of the attacks took place in Iraq. Between 2004 and 2005, international terrorist attacks tripled to nearly 10,000, in part due to the war in Iraq.

Claim #2: “We’ve had 5 1/2 years of robust economic growth.” Today, the top one percent of earners have a greater share of national income than at any time since 1920. Wage growth has slowed to a crawl, and “overall pace of job creation, which has slowed compared to prior years, is barely enough to keep pace with population growth.”

Claim #3: “The balance sheet is uncertain” in Iraq. Since January, violence “has increased in most provinces” and U.S. and Iraqi forces “have been unable to diminish rising sectarian violence contributing to the volatile security situation,” says a recent Pentagon report.

Kristol’s policy prescriptions have failed time and time again. In 2003, he claimed there was a “pop psychology” that “the Shia can’t get along with the Sunni. … There’s almost no evidence of that at all.” He advocated escalation, provided “optimistic” depictions of violence in Iraq, and supported the war so the U.S. can bomb Iraq and Syria.

Hey Flucko, I consider every act of violence terror, so it’s been .0008 seconds since our last attack, and violence is on the rise in this country.

What a coincidence .0008 seconds is how long your GF said you last in bed. No wonder wackos like you think sex is only for creation, and not fun.

  22. BottomBoy says:

Heh. Kristol’s always been good at this. Never fails to get under your skin while delivering good news to our own moron wing. We create the reality which you will then study – judiciously.

Now, TP’ers…”should get over their “adolescent moodiness” and embrace the “heartening developments” of the past six years.”, if you can do this, you’ll truly be progressing. Where you’ll be progressing TO is anyone’s guess, though.

Thoughtful people would not compare our unemployment rate with another country – let alone another continent. It doesn’t work that way. And rather than simply look at how many of us are working – you may want to consider what types of jobs are available for those who wish to work. yeah, go get a job at Mcdonalds or sweep floors – all kinds of jobs, huh? Problem there is they only pay a little north of minimum wage. We all know the minimum wage is not enough for most anybody to survive on. So I value your words, I just don’t know what idea you wanted to express.

It’s funny. I looked at my words. I even had my boss look at my words. Neither of us could read where your comment would be appropriate. My position was not judge people working or wishing to work. My position was in not comparing dis-similar economies (USA vs Europe). I for one would always encourage people to work rather than rely on welfare (even two or three jobs). Your point there is correct. But still, even working people have trouble due to many factors related to lower wages, lack of health insurance, lack of transportation, etc…Thoughtful people would look at the gap being created which accounts for the difference between the highest paid and the lowest paid workers. the gap is expanding faster than ever – with no end in sight. Strong employment decreases elements of terrorism and creates strong self worth in people – just what the world needs now, no?

Leo Strauss, Fascist Father of the Neo-Cons, had it all down pat back in the 60’s and early 70’s (he died in 1973).

Prior to old Leo The Fascist’s death, however, he managed to push through some 100+ PhD’s….who are now scattered through the country’s philosophy departments….in the Federalist Society….and the Bush Administration. The PNAC (those responsible for 911 and the Patriot Act) are all “Straussians”.

Chief among Straussian proteges is none other than the fraud, Paul Wolfowitz!! Imagine that??!!

Judge Clarence Thomas, Robert Bork and guess who???? None other than the neo-propagandist and former Dan Quayle Chief of staff:: THE ONE AND ONLY…….(DRUMROLL)……WILLIAM KRISTOL!!

And since I am an educated man, I looked at your words and tried very hard to make sense of them. I could not. YOU claim progessives are communist. YOU don’t cite any authority except YOU. YOU presume to label me (and millions of your neighbors) as a communist because we embrace change and a sense of fairness. YOU have decided things that your intellect is not built to withstand. YOU have written mental checks your brain cannot cash. It is unfortunate that people like yourself cannot see the damage you are doing to your reputation in the blogosphere. Anyway, I am glad you can write the english language. At least that is a start. Sheesh, please don’t have any children – they deserve much better than YOU.

CEO is in charge of total management . In contrast to cooks, plumbers and construction workers, it is impossible to to assign specific tasks for such a high level position. They are just in charge of everything – the buck stops on their desk. It’s the same thing as in academia when it comes to professors. They run the lab, only a handful of people could keep all those balls in the air at the same time and that’s why they’re paid more than a post-doc. A research group can’t exist without professor or the postdocs and students, but profs get paid more because they can’t be replaced. Postdocs and students can be. The same goes for cooks.

Again, thoughts without attribution. Accusations without proof. Claims without support. Maybe if you read your own words and considered what they indicate as to your ability to communicate – you might just answer your own question. Compared to your example of thoughtful writing – a small pile of mulch would have created a much better point. If you think the left is holier than thou (we aren’t) you may want to stop writing as that just gives us plenty of reason to think we might be. Are there more like you at home (please no God).

See, it’s that ’sense of fairness’ that gets you labelled a communist. Socialism is all about the ‘greater good’ and redistribution of wealth. Some of your posters have been talking about it here, today as a matter of fact.

No one argues (well, that may not be entirely true) against folks being paid a livable wage, what they argue is the idea of taking from the rich (just because they have ‘more’) and re-distributing it to the poor (the have-nots).

I get labeled by a nutjob as a communist and YOU support it? My sense of fainess has nothing to do with the type of government we (or any other country) has. My sense of fairness has nothing to do with politics, per se. Workers who bring more to the table, or take greater risks should be paid more. Why would anybody better themselves if we all got the same money? We wouldn’t. Nobody is claiming the cook should get more than the CEO (unless the cook IS the CEO). Some could argue that the CEO earning 1800 times what the average worker receives may be excessive – maybe, maybe not. That’s not my call. Again, I would caution you against presuming to know anything about me – certainly to the degree where you label me (or anybody) a communist. You make yourself appear foolish.

i see that a majority of people now want to impeach that Satanic vice president we have. how did that happen? the ‘liberal media’? or was it the day Rush Limbaugh said he was done ‘carrying water’ for the administration?

Like they did with the Blacks!

You ever heard of the Black Panthers? And they weren’t the servile rightwing nitwit you’re.

Porque to eres un traidor a tu raza?

Wich is it? I’m a traitor to my race? Now you say that I’m not a Fake Spaniard? A fourth negative? And “Spanish” isn’t a race, but a mix. Read your history. Oh, and to the “whites” reading this interchange, yours isn’t either a pure race. Britain, Germany, Poland, or Ireland suffered a good bunch of invasions along the years. So much for the “purity of blood”.

Sique Mamando los cojones del los Anglos!

Spanish orthography lesson #1 for bums: proverb and article contractions. Some proverbs followed by articles can be contracted in a single word. So, “del” is a contraction of “de” (proverb) and “el” (masculine singular), Lesson #2, putting two articles in line is WRONG, specially if you are referencing a different number and/or genre. So “del los” is WRONG WRONG WRONG, dum bass. Lesson #3: Do the ph#cking favor of not changing g per q. It makes you look very analphabetic. And “Anglos”? Please. Even in the white majority of the USA the “Anglos” are a minory. There are a lot of germans, poles, irish and mixed descendants. It’s a bad word even for slang. Oh, and “mamando” (sucking), although it sounds harsher than “chupando” (licking), it’s innacurate because the cojones haven’t a hole in them that can produce any liquid.

    Como se sabe eso espermas?

This only phrase hurts my eyes beyond all your faulty messages. How can you produce so many inaccuracies in a phrase so short? I can’t even understand what you say, if not for the previous babbling phrases.

As a language, English is derived from the Anglo-Saxon, a West Germanic variety, although its current vocabulary includes words from many languages. The Anglo-Saxon roots can be seen in the similarity of numbers in English and German, particularly seven/sieben, eight/acht, nine/neun and ten/zehn. Pronouns are also cognate: I/ich; thou/Du; we/wir; she/sie.

    You really are a dumbfu(k, aren’t you?

The 1.5 million people in US jails (7 times more than in the EU) are not considered “unemployed” in the US, nor are the millions who have stopped looking for a job. (Go check the US govt definition of unemployment.)

Once you get rid of distortions like this, you’ll find that the unemployment rates in the US and the EU are roughly the same. Labor force pariicipation in France is actually HIGHER than it is in the United States. So is social mobility – people born poor who move up.

And if we didn’t have 2 million people in the Armed Forces, our unemployment rate would be even higher.

I forgot to post “Project much? x343″ onto that post. TP’s assertion is that Giuliani doesn’t know that troops were withdrawn from Vietnam. Giuliani was railing against the use of a timetable because it would aid the enemy; it didn’t indicate a knowledge gap.

What a stupid assumption, even for TP, to make.

  191. Jeremy says:

Err, ‘Stalinist Right-Wingers’? Let me fix that for you. ‘Nazi Right-Wingers’. Stalin’s economic philosophy was strongly left-wing — ultimate political control over the economy. Hitler and Mussolini were strong Right-Wing in the economic sector — both of them wanted hands off the Economy. But they did share something in common, along with Dubya. Both were intensely for the idea of taking control of the Citizen’s lives.

Oh, and Mr. P? Next time you want to spout off bullshit? Go to Wiki first.

“English is a West Germanic language originating in England, and the first language for most people in Australia, Canada, the Commonwealth Caribbean, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States (also commonly known as the Anglosphere). It is used extensively as a second language and as an official language throughout the world, especially in Commonwealth countries such as India, Pakistan and South Africa, and in many international organisations.”

Will make you look less like an idiot. If you ment that English has been influenced by Latin and Greek during its development, you’d be closer on the mark, but German is English’s closer relative than either of those two languages.

The ‘truth’ of an utterance is a function of whether it supports the Party and its leading role as Vanguard of the Revolution.

A ‘lie’ is a statement that does not advance the interests of the Party.

Leading Academic: Neo-Nazis Have Signed Us Onto WWIII
Destroying World Order: Analysing the war In Iraq and the Middle East with Dr Franics A Boyle

    Steve Watson & Alex Jones
    Infowars.net
    Friday, January 5, 2007

Alex Jones was joined on air this week by eminent American Professor, Dr Francis A Boyle, to discuss the current situation in Iraq, the wider implications for International Relations and the ruthless mentality of the Straussian neoconservatives that have seized global power in the twenty first century.

Boyle is a leading American professor, practitioner and advocate of international law. He was responsible for drafting the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989, the American implementing legislation for the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention. He served on the Board of Directors of Amnesty International (1988-1992), and represented Bosnia- Herzegovina at the World Court. Professor Boyle teaches international law at the University of Illinois, Champaign. He holds a Doctor of Law Magna Cum Laude as well as a Ph.D. in Political Science, both from Harvard University.

“There is the other factor of deliberately stirring up animosity between the Shia and the and the Sunni, which this lynching was also designed to do.” Boyle said.

Dr Boyle went on to say that National Security Advisors and leading Neocon hawks Elliott Abrams and Stephen Hadley gave the green light to deliberately stir up sectarian tensions, not only in Iraq between the Shia and the Sunni, but also in the Muslim world. So they picked the holiest day, Eid al-Adha, giving the go ahead to lynch Saddam knowing full well that it would stir up tensions all across the Middle East.

“If you look at the wire services today you will see that they have now turned Saddam Hussein into a martyr. Now I’ve done a lot of work in the Arab and Muslim world and prior to this everyone I knew just thought Saddam Hussein was pretty much a butcher. But now they have turned him into a martyr and this is fine as far as the Neoconservative is concerned.” Boyle stated.

He pointed out that the same philosophy is being used today as was used by the United States during the Iran/Iraq war, as Henry Kissinger said, ‘we want them all to kill each other off’.

The globalist power mongers do not want a stable Arab and Muslim world because it would provide for a significant challenge to Western dominance of energy supplies and also diminish the arms industry greatly.

Dr Boyle has intimate knowledge of the mentality of those now running the show as he went through the same PhD program at Harvard as Henry Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski, and had the same International Relations teacher, Hans Morgenthau, whom many consider to be the father of International Relations as an independent discipline. Dr Boyle stated that when he was 21 years old Morgenthau offered to call up Kissinger and get Boyle a job on his White House Staff, which he declined. Dr Boyle also went to University at the same time as Wolfowitz, Ashcroft and other leading Neocons.

“You have to understand the neocon mentality, as I was saying, I went to the University of Chicago, the home of the neocons, I entered there in 1968 as an undergraduate. Their founder Leo Strauss had just retired from the political science department, but I was trained by his foremost student and protege, co-author and literary executor Joseph Cropsey. So I went right through the entire Neocon Program.” Dr Boyle asserted.

“They are still going forward with their plans to re-carve up the Middle East and re-make it in the neoconservative image. They encouraged the Israel “war”, massacre, whatever you want to call it against Lebanon and Israel’s war massacre against the Palestinians, both this Summer. And now they are planning for a war against Iran, a bombing campaign that very well could turn into world war three. And that would not bother them at all these Neoconservatives, indeed from their perspective how else are they going to retrieve this situation?”

Dr Boyle described the heritage that the neocon elite are carrying on. Basically put they follow the doctrine of Chicago University political stalwart Leo Strauss. Strauss’s mentor in Germany, before he emigrated to the United States, was Carl Schmitt. Carl Schmitt went on to become the most notorious Nazi law professor of that era, justifying every hideous atrocity that the Nazis inflicted on anyone.

    Boyle continued,

“The Neocons, through Strauss, and there is a book here if you are interested by Professor Shadia Drury… the Neocons have been thoroughly schooled in Straussian and Schmittian theory, which is basically Nazi, and these people really are neo-nazis. We have to understand that, and I think people have a difficult time coming to grips with it because it seems so alien to our tradition.

I spent seven years at Harvard getting three degrees after the University of Chicago, and again going through this exact same program that produced Kissinger and Brzezinski, because I wanted to be trained exactly like these people, and think like them, know what they’re up to and hopefully come out and turn it against them.”

The professor believes that what we are seeing now is the endgame, the ‘go for broke’ strategy. These neo-nazis, the neocons from Chicago, and President Bush, who at one point publicly bragged that he had appointed at least twenty Straussian neocons to his administration, are going for world domination and control.

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were pre-planned for quite some time, by the Israelis and by the Pentagon. They have been executed to seize and steal at least two thirds of the world’s energy resources, which the power elite plan to hold on to. According to Dr Boyle, this is the future of the world economy, they are not going to give it up.

They understood that if they made this major grab for world power, by launching brutal aggression against Iraq and Afghanistan and perhaps now Iran, if we don’t stop them, and Syria, that there would be massive resistance by the American people.

Dr Boyle compared the current situation to that of the Vietnam war, encouraging peaceful non-violent civil resistance in order to expose the criminals that wish to escalate war purely to make money and gain more power to do as they will.

“Harvard has learned nothing from the Vietnam war, they still train major war criminals and warmongers such as Kissinger, at Harvard today as we speak.

The Strategy all along was to destroy Iraq as a viable nation state, because, if you read Huntington’s Clash Of Civilizations, as he pointed out, Iraq was probably the only Arab nation state that could have provided leadership to the Arab world in a confrontation with the West over the energy supplies. So Iraq had to be destroyed.” Boyle urged.

If you own a weapon as a law-abiding citizen, Mr. Jihad Jeremy would actually like to confiscate your weapon, your right to bear arms, Mr. President.

  209. John Jay says:

The economic argument on (2) should NOT rely on income distribution as a ‘proof’ that the economy is not as good as claimed. That’s a philosophical point open to debate (for example, is this income gap due to pay for performance, and hence ‘legitimate’ in Capitalistic terms?)

What proves that the economy is not as good as claimed by the Administration and its supporters is the need to look at a ‘balance sheet’ view of the government, which includes its debts.

As of today, we owe about 8.8 Trillion dollars.
    8,872,765,276,558.67 to be precise
On Jan 21, 2001, we owed
    5,711,817,746,476.20 to be precise
and that number had finally stabilized or was due to shrink had Clintonian policies stayed in place.

Those 3.16 Trillion Dollars added to the national debt entered our pockets as tax reductions or additional spending or both, and helped the ‘growth’ figures, while hiding the cost through borrowing.

But if we ask every american to cough up $10,600 to return our debt to the level it was when Bush2 took office, it would ruin economic growth. For my family, that’s $53,000. I tell you, if we asked a typical family of 5 to give back $53,000 and then tell us what they think of the Bush Economy, they’d give a very different answer.

Short answer: economic growth based on overseas borrowing and consumption is not really economic growth. I think arguing from a point of view of ‘income inequality’ is irrelevant because this leads to a debate on risk, reward, and pay for performance. The short answer is very simple: the entire Bush economic growth is based on borrowing, and is thus not sustainable. It will have to be accompanied by a corresponding economic contraction in some future year as we reduce our government spending (which adds to GDP) or increased our taxes or both.

  210. Jeremy says:

Actually, CT? I don’t want to confiscate your gun. I’m not part of the anti-gun crowd. Now, if you bring it into my house, you’ll be given a choice. Give it to me, or run the risk of being shot with my gun if you don’t turn your ass around and walk right back out. Make My Day, playing in every house in Colorado. ;)

Now….why am I not ‘proud to have Greek and Latin as the basis for our language’? Well, you see, I don’t subscribe to your notion that the truth is what you want it to be. I’m still stuck in a reality based world. ;) But you believe what you want. We’re not laughing at you, we’re laughing WITH you. :) :) :) :)

That song was a parody of Reagonomics and the whole ‘Morning in America’ BS. The hopelessly bizarre story that goes with it is: Bush I actually wanted to use it as his campaign theme song. McFerrin refused. His other works, which are hardly known at all, are way beyond the little jab at the GOP nitwits.

On being able to pay for health insurance by working 2 or 3 jobs.

I am maintaining my health insurance between jobs. $700/mo for myself and a 22 yo daughter. Can you do the math for how many hours it takes to earn that (after taxes) on $7/hr?*

I am also an RN who has been working in health care for 30 years. It’s a broken, stupid, bloated mess. The overhaul will need to be major. Which means it will need to be incremental.

No one is talking about ‘free’ health care. The fact is we spend thousands more per capita that any other country. There are multiple reasons for this, most of which are never mentioned in the discussions I hear or read.
If anything, this is an excellent example of “wasting money somewhere”. It doesn’t beat the Pentagon. Nothing beats them on spending money they can’t account for.

Democrats are not Stalinists or Communists. I grew up Republican, cast my first vote for Tricky Dick, voted for Carter, read Ayn Rand, voted Libertarian twice since voting against Reagon in RED Alaska was just as much throwing your vote away. In ‘88 a stupid minister interfered with us registering GOP at the caucus. I went to the Democrats and realized they were none of the things they had been labeled – although I knew most of the labels fit the people who flung them. Yes, there are socialists and probably communists in the party. The GOP has some fringers who want to rewrite the Constitution to make America a Christian nation. And Neocons running the party into the grave.

I don’t like the ‘level playing field’ analogy. I just want an honest referee.

Anyone else who is fed up to the gills trying to communicate with people who have serious levels of cognitive dissonance and dysfunction:

    Go to your favorite bookseller.

Buy The Politcal Brain, The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nationby Drew Westen

    Read.

I am trying not to gush here. All I can think of are superlatives. Mind/brain function, morality, behavior, etc. have been a major fascination for decades. I have looked, read, searched, and waited for this book. Westen pulls together so much more and accomplishes what Lakoff only scratched the surface of in understanding the new sciences of brain function and how we use our brains.

I had been reading Stephen Pinker’s Blank Slate(having been through How the Mind Works) and will emphsize the basic premise he and Westen operate from:

A lot of what we think about how the mind works is very outdated and wrong. There are many inate aspects – which the Human Genome Project helped bring to light- that we have to understand in order to communicate better.

The explanation for our political problems I would suggest is:

The GOP is a really screwed up adolescent that manipulated the country into getting his own way.

The Dems are still too hung up on their idealistic early adulthood beliefs. Not all are wrong by any means. Some just need to be explained better and for reasons that support them but have not been used.

We need to grow up some. I think the country would be better off if the adolescent died a poetic justice death. A new party that could honestly perform the functions that a conservative party is needed for, in any political system, would be a good thing in the face of all the changes this country needs to make – quickly.

  219. Austin Cooper says:

It isn’t that Kristol and Brooks (and Broder, and Goldberg, and Klein, and…) aren’t fact-checked. It isn’t that.

It is that anyone will print what they write, at all. They’re liars. Period. They lie.

That used to mean something. People used to be criticized, called out, not given a soapbox and ignored if they lied the way Kristol, Brooks, et al., do as a matter of course.

Time will, of course, claim it’s an “op-ed” piece, and therefore “one person’s opinion”, so who gives a good Goddamn whether or not it’s true? Not Time, certainly.

If that’s the case — (and it is; write a critical note to Time about Kristol’s screed and that’s the evasion you’ll receive back) — then, there’s an occasionally verbally abusive schizophrenic I keep seeing in the Downtown of where I live.

He doesn’t use any bad language, but nothing he says makes one f-ing bit of sense, either. Why doesn’t Time publish his take on — anything? Kristol makes even less sense than this fellow, but there you are.

It’s a bit like Time’s cover girl from last year, Coulter — a person who lies, constantly. To make a career of lying (as Kristol has) is to be lauded, lionized and applauded for being “witty” “irreverent” and “controversial (read: Makes Money)”.

Time is one more lying mouthpiece for people who, like Kristol, have something to hide — in his case, it’s that he’s misspent his entire life, given that it’s based on a delusional fantasy of how the world actually is.

From the recently updated NSPD 51 issued by Bush in early May: “Catastrophic Emergency” means any incident, regardless of location that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage or destruction severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions;” (in which he would take over all control of the government–this document calls it “Enduring Constitutional Government”)

It is hard to be hopeful when our soldiers still don’t have the equipment they need to fight like up-armored humvees and body armor. It is difficult to be happy when we have kids who will grow up without knowing who their fathers and mothers were because they were killed fighting a civil war between the Shiias and the Sunnis in Iraq. It is impossible to be happy when our soldiers are not given the necessary one year between deployments. Due to the war in Iraq we are less safe today than we were before 9-11.
