Last month, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) argued on CBS’s Face the Nation, that the U.S. should “be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq.” “If there’s any hope” of stopping Iran’s nuclear program, “we can’t just talk to them. … We’ve got to use our force and to me that would include taking military action.”
Today in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Lieberman writes, “[E]very leader [in Washington] has a responsibility to acknowledge that…the Iranian government…has all but declared war on us and our allies in the Middle East.” He argues that the use of force against Iran is needed for one primary reason — to temper Iran’s “expansionist” desires to “dominate” its neighbors:
Iran is acting aggressively and consistently to undermine moderate regimes in the Middle East, establish itself as the dominant regional power and reshape the region in its own ideological image.
…[Iran] hopes to push the U.S. out of Iraq and Afghanistan, so that its proxies can then dominate [neighboring] states. Tehran knows that an American retreat under fire would send an unmistakable message throughout the region that Iran is on the rise and America is on the run. That would be a disaster for the region and the U.S.
Lieberman, however, used nearly identical talking points to retroactively justify the U.S invasion of Iraq. In the spring of 2004, after the search for WMDs proved fruitless, Lieberman argued that without U.S. intervention, Iraq would have embarked on its own campaign to dominate the “Arab world”:
I believe that [Iraq] developed [weapons of mass destruction] to use them against their neighbors. I’m talking about the Iraqis, their neighbors in the Arab world and the Persian Gulf.
Remember that Saddam was very clear that he had a plan. And the plan was to become the emperor, if you will, of the Arab world, to make Baghdad the capital of the Arab world.
Now, of course, that would have been terrible for the Arab world, and it would have been terrible for us. And, I think, in the short run his neighbors in the Persian Gulf and the Arab world are probably more significantly safe today than they were before, almost equal to our increase in safety as a result of our victory.
Lieberman was wrong in his solution for how to deal with Iraq and he’s wrong today about the consequences of U.S. military action against Iran. Fortunately, Lieberman is standing increasingly alone — according to a recent poll, 72 percent of the American public “favor diplomacy to pressure with Iran.”
UPDATE: Carpetbagger has more.

Bush is no different than a Mullah. Jihad seems to have won here. Look at today’s court rulings on wiretapping.
Democracy is not in the Declaration of Independence. A country with checks and balances is.
How many Iraqi’s have died since the start of this war? Iran would not be there if not for us.
Is Iran your enemy? Have you asked them? Or did you ask Fox? Perhaps talk to an Iranian student might help. No one should have nuclear weapons. None have claim. All have claim.
July 6th, 2007 at 6:16 pmJust sayin’ Frank……whom can you trust?? Certainly not this present government. Is it any wonder why the rest of the world distrusts us? Hell, we can’t even trust our own officials with our safety!

Iran does not support terrorism in anyway, shape or form. The nukes they build will be for their own energy.
Iran is a peaceful country, will beautiful people. They would never aid the insurgents in Iraq.
July 6th, 2007 at 6:16 pmSince there’s no way of discerning (short of a crystal ball which Frank, the Dweeb, certainly doesn’t own)….how anything is used (even our own stockpiles, folks…) what’s the argument then?
July 6th, 2007 at 6:16 pmClearly, there is no argument here. Iran is a sovereign nation and we have no business there….end of story.
July 6th, 2007 at 6:17 pmveritas: the rest of the world? What is this rest of the world? The way I see it, we have an excellent alliance with Israel, a very cordial relationship with the Europe, good business relationship with China and an alliance with Australia. Who cares about Africa?
July 6th, 2007 at 6:17 pm“I was one of the Democrats who voted for Gore/Lieberman in 2000. I bet a lot of other progressives and Democrats here did the same thing.”
LIEberman would have been fine as VP with Gore. Gore would have kept him in line. The only reason why LIEberman is so nuts now is because he has become marginalized and he knows it. He really has no power in the Democratic party and if he turns into a Republic he will have even less power since he will be the new kid on the block. He has an exaggerated sense of self and this is the only way he can get the attention he needs to survive. He is pretty pitiful and is becoming dangerous. I really wish that Connecticut could find some way to recall him or impeach him…do something to get him the hell out of there before he does something really stupid.
Hopefully the Democrats are not listening to him. I don’t think they are that stupid. Imagine what the Democrats ratings would look like if they supported bombing Iran. The liberals and progressives are already pissed at them for caving to Bush on the war funding, they would be beyond pissed if the Democrats were to follow LIEberman into this rat hole.

Same shit different assholes. Excuse the vernacular.
July 6th, 2007 at 6:25 pm“Iran has no right to develop nuclear weapons. This is what I just don’t get. Why do you want to give our enemies access to nuclear weapons??!”
What makes Iran our enemies. Have they come out and declared war on our country? Remember that we have seen NO proof that they are in any way involved in Iraq. The only “proof” is that our government tells us they are. And we all know how reliable our government is when it comes to telling the truth.
I consider Pakistan to be my enemy? And why is that? Because they are harboring Osama bin Laden and they are allowing Al-Qaeda sanctuary to run their training camps there. If Al-Qaeda is to ever get any kind of nuclear technology to use against us, it will more likely come from Pakistan than from Iran, a country that is at least 10 years from having any useful nuclear technology. So, since I consider Pakistan to be my enemy, should I be calling on our government to bomb Pakistan? No, I won’t do that, because I believe in talking with our enemies so that we can learn to understand and respect each other. It is only through mutual understanding and respect that two countries can stop being enemies.
And why does Iran have no right to nuclear weapons? Because we say so? Then they (Iran) should have the right to say that we have no right to nuclear weapons. We, unlike Iran, have told them that they are our enemy and pretty much told them that one of these days they would be attacked by this fine country. So, if they fight back, are you going to say that by fighting back that proves that they are our enemy?
Why do we want to go out there in the world and make more enemies? I think it’s much more productive for us to go out there and make friends. We already have enough enemies, we don’t need to purposely make more.
July 6th, 2007 at 6:26 pmCome on, people, SOME of you must be interested in making a few extra bucks, working in a nice air-conditioned office??? What, do liberals and progressives have some sort of “integrity” or something?
We’re desperate here! Room for advancement –and I mean IN A HURRY. Seriously, do you think we’d be sending out Frank M, CT_V1, dogtrotters and Mr. President to represent us if we had some decent talent on the bench?
Call me.

I bet others are being wiretapped in this country who did absolutly nothing illegal either.
July 6th, 2007 at 6:28 pmI don’t hate muslims. I am suspicious of all muslims, because muslims attacked us on 9/11. Back in 1940s it was a perfectly acceptable reaction to be suspicious of your ethnic enemies, but I guess we’ve become too wussified to accept what has to be done.

Wrong. He was elected. Not only once but twice.

London authorities where trying to determine the reason for these recent attacks. Some fear that gridlock and poor service by the public transportation system here is responsible for causing these horrendous attacks. Officials are looking into making the mass transit more user friendly to prevent future complaints.

July 6th, 2007 at 6:38 pmFrank,
July 6th, 2007 at 6:38 pmI don’t think your outmatched. Its just that I believe democracy flows from the people.
But, definitely 9/11 did not change the Declaration!
Frank M - Some day you may come home and find your wife gone. You look everywhere for her but you can’t find her. You know she wouldn’t leave you so you are really worried. The problem was that she was talking to her friend in Iran about coming there for a visit and Homeland security was wiretapping your phone. They got suspicious of your wife and so they kidnapped her and are holding her at an undisclosed location. They have declared her an “enemy combatant” and are holding her, with no rights to recourse, in a place where you will never find her.
Does that sound ok to you? I know you will say “that’s preposterous, that would never happen. And I will ask, how do you know? How do you know that it hasn’t already happened to people in this country. There are still hundreds of US citizens who are Muslims missing from our initial round-up of Muslims after 9-11. Ever wonder where they are and what happened to them, especially considering that we have not charged even one US citizen with any crimes connected to 9-11.
I would that something bad like that would happen to you just to teach you a lesson. But my scenario would involve an innocent victim so I can’t wish that. I know, I hope some day someone overhears something you say and reports you to Homeland Security. Then I wish that they will kidnap you and put you some place where you will never again see the light of day. Wow, I like that scenario.

Al-Qaeda, the eternal covert operation posted 07/06/2007, 5:50 AM (Larry Chin)
[Category: Commentary]
It is a well-established and deliberately unaddressed historical fact that the CIA created “radical Islam†and Islamic “terrorism†during the Cold War. It is also a documented fact that the US, its allies, and their intelligence agencies (CIA, Pakistan’s ISI, Britain’s MI-6, etc.) have — from the 1970s to the present day — continued to use and guide terrorist groups, including “Al-Qaeda,†as intelligence and propaganda assets. “Islamic terrorism†is a manufactured weapon of Western geostrategy, serving Anglo-American interests.
Planned covert operations and false flag operations using “terrorists†in direct and indirect military-intelligence roles are of imperial design. Such operations (exemplified by 9/11), and their predictable propaganda results (“the war on terrorismâ€) are now routine events.
Official “war on terrorism†disinformation is repeated ad nauseum, accepted as fact by the mass populace, and used as the justification for ever-expanding Anglo-American war and ever-deepening criminality. Virtually no attention is paid to the Anglo-American support and management of “Al-Qaeda†and other “terror†groups. Little or no attention is devoted to the criminally fabricated nature of modern “terrorism†or the fact that every major “terrorism†event in recent times has been a US or US-allied covert operation, followed by political manipulation and cover-up.

July 6th, 2007 at 6:42 pmExistential War? Frank, war is not existential.
You want a different Constitution, then I propose that your write one.
Muslims, Christian, Agnositic, Atheist- it makes no difference if you have no choice in life, and no checks and balances to those you elect.

That may have been the case before 9/11.

NOW we are getting to the bottom of Frank’s deepset paranoia: HE hates America and what we were founded on.
Gotta hand it to him, he has bought into Darth and the NeoCon program, 100%. This is so like Germany in the early 30’s when Hitler took away all their rights and told them it was for their own good.
Frank, how did that work out for them, the rest of the world and about 11,000,000 innocent people who had different beliefs than he did??

July 6th, 2007 at 6:42 pmThat’s hilarious! But True…
Isn’t it enough that we have one wrong war one our hands that is costing the American people $2 billion dollars each week? I absolutely disagree with Sen. Lieberman to engage in a war with Iran. The American government needs to stop all its immediate damage to this global community. The war in Iraq is costing more poverty and violence, which is a perfect breeding ground for more terrorism. According to the Borgen Project, it only costs $19 billion dollars annually to end world poverty. The $340 billion dollars we have spent on the war in Iraq would have ended 17 years of world hunger and malnutrient. This country and its people definitely needs a new leader and admin that is willing to address the issue of world poverty and is willing to put the needs of the people before political gain.

[We] don’t want [Iran] to have [nukes] because even if they never used it, it would affect the politics in the Middle East, number one. And number two, the more people that have these weapons, the more nuclear material you have around, the more vulnerable it is to pilfering. It is a serious problem.
What? Clinton was concerned about Iran for the same reasons as Joe?

There must be some aspiring writers out there who want to earn a few bucks while getting experience “writing in character” right? Half of our operatives don’t believe what they post anyway. It’s not a prerequisite by any means.
