Washington Talk Radio Station Drops Bill O’Reilly»

oreillycoulter.jpgWashington DC FM talk radio station 106.7 WJFK yesterday announced it was dropping Bill O’Reilly’s nationally syndicated show, and replacing it with a sports-talk program. The Washington Post reports today that O’Reilly’s cancellation is a “case in point” of how poorly conservative radio programs have fared in DC:

With the exception of Rush Limbaugh, conservative talk-radio hosts have struggled for years to find a wide audience on the local dial. While Limbaugh’s afternoon program remains popular on WMAL (630 AM), not many other conservatives’ programs have.

Yet despite their underwhelming performance, numerous right-wing radio hosts have been given repeated opportunities to succeed in DC. “Such radio stars of the right as Laura Ingraham, Glenn Beck and Michael Savage at times have literally had no ratings in Washington, as measured by Arbitron.”

In its diagnosis of conservative talk’s failures in the DC region, the Post points to a host of factors including the weak signals of some stations, weak programming, and the unique culture of the area that is resistant to political talk radio. One factor that went unmentioned, however, is the impact media consolidation has had on the local market.

In the Center for American Progress’s recent report on the “structural imbalance of political talk radio,” it noted that Washington DC had 65 percent conservative content and only 35 percent progressive. In this region, the market is dominated by only five owners:

Ownership # of stations Station ID
Bonneville International 5 WFED, WGYS, WTOP, WTWP-AM, WTWP-FM
CBS Radio 1 WJFK
ABC, Inc. 1 WMAL
Radio One, Inc. (Urban Talk) 1 WOL
Clear Channel 2 WTNT, WWRC

This pattern of ownership homogeneity is reflected in radio markets throughout the nation. CAP’s report calls for increasing the ownership diversity in the talk radio market, allowing more local participation in determining the content communities want to listen to.

Digg It!

I guess it must have been those “market forces” that kept giving right-wing windbags chance after chance to succeed in a location where nobody wants them.

  40. Ashen Shard Says:

This topic also connects to Net Neutrality and why it is so important. The radio waves used to be free, with the people not only choosing but producing their own programing. In the 30’s, however, the media conglomerates moved in and was assisted by the government in taking away local control producing nationally homogeneous programming. Those independent broadcasters which remained, and they were few after he corporations took most of the frequencies, could not compete since they only broadcast for a specific group of people and therefore could not get the advertising revenue necessary to continue. People no longer had a say in what was broadcast, they either had to accept what was there or turn off the radio.

  51. Hemlock for Gadflies Says:

I guess I’m the only one, but I really don’t care much about this issue. First, the story is a lot more complicated (I think) than the Reagan-deregulated-and-conservatives-took-over narrative.

Second, who listens to AM radio anymore? Truck drivers, hillbillies, farmers, and that’s about it. I think it bears keeping in mind that the reason cons took control of AM was the fact that nobody else — certainly nobody that matters — was using it.

I’m comfortable with that, though my comfort would surely be increased if someone (Think Progress??) would compute how many FM stations are characteristically liberal and/or progressive voices (i.e., KPFK in SoCal). For me the comparative ratings are beside the point — it is the comparative opportunity.

I think we might well find that the problem is not that conservatives dominate talk radio but that progressives don’t listen to talk radio, so a Pacifica station is bound to have fewer listeners, all else equal, than a Clear Channel. After all, among other things, progressives can read!

Also - don’t bash my town. DC is 1/3 functionally illiterate in English because many residents are functionally literate in Spanish and Amharic. DC also ranks 4th in the country in college graduates - 45% of residents have a BA/BS or higher.

But for some bizarre twist of fate, all of these talanted “Libruls” can’t hack it on AM talk radio.
“Libruls” can make you laugh, make you cry, make you want to sing and dance, can deliver the news, but they aren’t good enough to simply talk in a radio studio. Nope. Only Michael Shmirkonish, Glenn Beck, Michael Medved, etc., can entertain on the AM dial.
    Why is that?

Second, who listens to AM radio anymore? Truck drivers, hillbillies, farmers, and that’s about it. I think it bears keeping in mind that the reason cons took control of AM was the fact that nobody else — certainly nobody that matters — was using it.

The relevance of Limbaugh is not that he preaches to anyone outside of the choir - it’s that his platform gives him and his ideas a legitimacy that allows him and them to enter the mainstream. He gets to be on CBS and NBC, and his ideas get assimilated into the national dialog, because he has a radio show.

I think we might well find that the problem is not that conservatives dominate talk radio but that progressives don’t listen to talk radio…

I think this is exactly right. Progressives are too busy working to sit around and listen to Limbaugh for 3 hours. They are not attracted to the one-sided rants that are so effective on talk radio. They are looking for news and balance, not screeds.

Not only that: progressives are not going to buy the “build-your-own-small-business” schemes and supplements to help you “lose-weight-grow-hair-stop-joint-pain-change-your-sex-life” that have become the staples of talk radio advertising.

Progressives are not sheep who will buy any piece of junk just because a radio host tells them to, so they make, from an advertiser’s prospective, a lousy audience.

Conservatives, however, will believe anything, so you can sell them anything. If I was an advertiser trying to sell a piece of worthless junk, I’d advertise on Limbaugh - his audience will obviously believe anything they’re told.

That’s one of the reasons I think Air America will continue to have a rough slog. If you’re the sort of person who likes Thom Hartmann, you aren’t going to be buying diet aids based on radio ads.

“This Administration still refuses to learn – despite all independent evidence – what it will take to protect the American people from terrorist attack on our own soil.

“President Bush has been seriously under-funding homeland security for the past two years, even as several expert commissions have said there is an urgent need for significant new investments in almost every area of our domestic defenses – including $100 billion in critical needs for first responders and preventers.

“I am dumbstruck by the president’s proposed, government-wide cut of more than 30 percent for first responders. It is ill-considered, and the brave men and women working under intolerable circumstances, risking their lives everyday to protect the rest of us, will be hamstrung by it.

“At most, this request moves baby steps towards securing the homeland in some areas, when we must take bold strides to close the dangerous security gaps revealed by the September 11th attacks.”

    2. “Gun Control” takes away the ability of good people to defend themselves from people you probably claim are “acting out.” The need to let their rage out, you probably say. It’s a great option for criminal minorities, too, I see.
    3. Liberals are worse criminals than Republicans will ever be. You are a pack of domestic anarchists. The military should be fighting its war against people like you, domestically.

I have my own material. I listen and read what all sides think.I am still waiting for more from the democrat party. The party of JFK! They seem to have been hijacked and thats a damn shame! You don’t have any ideas.Impeach Bush and investigate does not fix the social and foreign policies of this country. Go ahead an attack republicans instead of answeing my questions to you? Attacking republicans does not answer the question by the way. Please inspire me to join your party with good solid ideas!Ideas?

  133. Johnny Swank Says:

Do you know the difference between the two parties Shorty? You can bash republicans and listeners of talk radio all you want, but one simple, very simple, fact is that the left never attacks itself. You go lock step with everything your side does!I never hear liberals attacking their party. If Hillary says it,it must be true.If the New York Times writes it,it must be true. Conservatives on the other hand disagree with their party and voice their opposistion. Immigration being the latest example. I wish liberals would stand up to the far left nuts in their party that have taken it over. But they can’t or won’t because they are locked into all of the talking points they are fed and then regurgitated here and elsewhere.

  134. Johnny Swank Says:

    “If Hillary says it,it must be true” - http://abcnews.go.com/ Politics/ story?id=3297741&page=1 I guess not

“If the New York Times writes it,it must be true” - not sure I understand your point here, but Judith Miller and Scooter Libby and Dick Cheney were certainly glad that everyone believed their fabrications in 2002/2003 http://nymag.com/ nymetro/ news/ media/ features/ 9226/

  136. Shorty Shitstain Says:

And what happens to the folks that dare stand up to the Republican Party masters? Ask John McCain. Also, if you refer to the DEMOCRATIC party as the Democrat party, I will have to assume that you are either cutting and pasting from the Limbaugh letter.

  137. Bush is Corrupt. Says:

#133: Wrong. The only reason Republicans are currently attacking Bush is that even they are FED UP with his GROSS INCOMPETENCE. Up until this year, they walked LOCK STEP with him.

  138. Johnny Swank Says:

Another good example of the right and left can be seen in editorials written in The New York Times,Boston Globe,Los Angeles Times,etc.. Look at their editorials written by liberals, bash everything right. I guess there is nothing the democrat party does wrong. It never gets mad at it’s side,it’s a perfect world over there in liberal land. Conservative editorialist hammered Bush on Supreme Court nominees, immigration, and out of control spending. But the idealogues on the left believe that if you disagree with them(Joe Liberman),you are a traitor who won’t be supported in the future. That’s the sad reality of the democrat party. Ideas are supposed be debated, even within your own party. Move On and George Soros have taken the party to the extreme left, and you leftist are responsible for it. When will you take it back?

  139. MSK Says:

I live in Montgomery County, Maryland. It is considered part of the DC market. It boasts itself as one of the highest ranked counties in average education level. No doubt, that has something to do with its inhabitants not being duped or deceived by right-wing propaganda. It is a lot harder to hoodwink people who know more than the average right-wing talking-head. We are not likely to be confused or be impressed with showmanship over substance.

  140. MSK Says:

#133: Wrong. The only reason Republicans are currently attacking Bush is that even they are FED UP with his GROSS INCOMPETENCE. Up until this year, they walked LOCK STEP with him.

C’mon people. These GOP showboaters have not had a change of heart on Iraq. It’s election time, for crying out loud! Get a clue. These Bush rimmers have already discussed their pooh-poohing with the White House. It’s for electioneering consumption. Nothing more. In the end, party will come before country.

  141. Edward R Olbermann Says:

more liberals have failed at talk radio. air america anyone?

  142. Johnny Swank Says:

Shorty still hasn’t answered any of my questions. Dwight D. Eisenhower used the term “Democrat”in the 1950’s quite a bit. I know it’s”Democratic”. Does something as simple as this aggravate you Shorty. I see it’s much easier to respond to “democrat” than to answer questions of substance, like the ones posted above. Democrat:The party of ideas? No,the party of disdain and hatred.

I said the conservative party, not Bush,Bush is Corrupt. There is a big difference. Republican voters in droves did not vote in the last election, therefore giving the democrats the win in the House and Senate. They were fed up with all of them running on conservative values and not legislating them when in office.

  144. Johnny Swank Says:

I was questioned by Shorty to come up with my own material on post #129. I fired back with post #132 “Ideas”. It proves my point about democrats, they are the party without ideas. It’s easy to attack a sitting President, very easy,no matter what party they are with. I asked for ideas, not attacks, and still nothing but attacks. That is why progresive radio or liberal radio will not succeed, no idea only an attack machine. What are you going to talk about if Hillary is elected President? Her hair styles”Matt Lauer”?

  145. Shorty Shitstain Says:

How do we deal with the islamic terroist extremist who want to murder us? I would take a look at all of the recent “foiled” plots. Then, go ahead and look at how our Intelligence, or Britain’s, etc. was able to head these off. That would bring us to a Democratic idea (remember, it is Democratic Party, not the Democrat Party) that we should increase our number of intelligence operatives. We should also increase the number of translators that can speak other languages that could also help decode TERROIST chatter. The war on terror is like the war on drugs. Have we won that one yet?

How do we get out of Iraq and still have success so the lives where for not? By building a time machine and not going.

Wrong. You bring up Clinton because you want an excuse for the bullsh!t your leader is trying to push. But, if you are going to use Clinton as a shield, you have to do it with people that like Clinton. I wouldn’t be one of those.

  156. Johnny Swank Says:

I was unaware that the recent”foiled plots” could be discussed here, since the majority believe “The War on Terror” is a slogan dreamed up by Cheeney. We have and are doing all of those things you stated. You state these things as if we are not,a.k.a. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and these are new ideas that the democrats thoght of. We are listening to the chatter. We have increased the number of intelligence officers around the world. Hillary thought of these things right? No. I also thought listening to “Chatter” violates the rights of people who are not citizens of the United States? Hillary has a nice web site, with all of the lefts new talking points about “The Misunderstanding on Terrorism”. Talk about “Parroting”. Next you’ll tell me that Bush decreased the funding for these programs. I know in the liberal mind set that reducing the precentage from an 8% increase last year to a 7.25% increase in this years funding is considered a decrease. When we are actually only increasing 7.25% compared to the 8% we spent last year. It’s still an increase right? Right Hillary? I mean Shorty?

  157. Silas Says:

I just love how the republicans can’t defend anything Bush does, all they can do is shout: “But,… Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton!!!”

First, Bill Clinton lied about an AFFAIR, he didn’t lie to shield a traitor within our own government (who outed a covert CIA agent in a time of war!). If Libby was a liberal, or a Moslem, you hypocritical right-wing nuts would be falling all over yourselves demanding we execute the guy! And if truth is so important to you, why aren’t you upset that Bush lied us into war in Iraq? Isn’t a lie to get us into war a little worse than lying about an affair?

And yes, Clinton issued pardons, BUT, he didn’t pardon a traitor against our own country, who obstructed justice to shield his own Executive Office! Pardoning someone to protect your own ass is not only immoral, it is an impeachable offence!

What happened to the Republicans bringing “Honor and Integrity” to the White House? I guess you only care about honor and integrity if it is a Democrat in the office, because this Bush regime is the most corrupt, dishonest, despicable, group of criminals that I’ve ever seen in one place toghether!

Just try and defend your boy Bush without shouting “Bill Clinton”, for once, please? If you really belive in Bush, you ought to be able to defend him on his own merits (ha!).

  160. null Says:

Whine, whine, whine! Poor conservatives, they NEVER get to talk! Facts are sooo inconvenient! As one famous person said, “You are entitled to your own opinion, NOT your own facts”. Conservatives are about to be crushed by the weight of their own hypocricy. Good. I’m sick to death of hearing about neocons who say they have no power while relieving us of our freedoms, all because they are afraid and we are not.

Suck it up. You live in a free society, and your fifteen minutes are almost up. People are getting wise to the game, and they are going to run you all out of town. The irony is, it won’t be liberals - it will be the independent swing voters who have grown to hate them. The most recent poll has independents voting to impeach Cheny at a higher rate then liberals. You have a great deal more to be worried about then just liberals. You are losing the swing voters that put you in power to begin with.

The cost of an open society is danger. Deal with guns, speech, and terror plots because the alternative is a police state. We’ve been through this before, we can get through it again, as long as we don’t hand over our brains to folks who are more bigoted and scared than us. Keep your eyes open, and here’s a thought - why don’t YOU learn a language other than English so you can be of use? I am taking Arabic in the fall at my local junior college, and have already taken two years of Spanish. We aren’t the only country in the world, you know. And anyone who bothers to learn at least some English is STILL further along than an American that knows no other language than his own.

No other developed country raises ignorance to the level of piety quite like the U.S. That is shameful. We should be leading the world, and instead, we limp into 15th for the free press and just ahead of Slovenia for healthcare. We aren’t #1 anymore, and saying it is so does not make it true. Having it be true makes it true. Those pesky facts again!

Hurray for DC when it comes to degrees - we should all be taking advantage of the freedoms we still have to better educate ourselves. In case you haven’t noticed, it is very important to have one to participate in the American Dream nowadays. Go to school at night, trolls. You just might meet a few brown people who won’t scare you so much. And take a civics class while you’re at it. They do wonders. I would appreciate you noting my typos and gramatic errors Shorty. My New Orleans Public schooling was worth it’s weight in gold. The substance of the questions are really whats importannt though, right? Attacking grammar is petty and does not answer the burning questions of the day.

    Spudge Boy,

Why do you consider yourself “The Enemy”? Thank you for the tip. I thought we are all Americans debating the issue.

It does have to deal with Iraq. Like it or not we are there. What and where are the main focuses of the war? What do we hear day in and day out? Iraq! Where is the rest of the world focused on? Iraq! Why? Because we started a war in Iraq. What now? Leave Iraq to chaos like we did in Vietnam? So another Pol Pot can be created? We have to deal with this mess, not ignore it and hope it will all go away.

  164. Johnny Swank Says:

    Entitled you are Shorty.

  165. Johnny Swank Says:

Clinton’s name is brought up because he was a douche and so is Bush. The two are a lot alike. Clinton did lie to Congress about the affair. But you and others like to omit the more serious crime of coersion, getting others to lie on his behalf: Betty Currie for one.

Do act stupid. You people have been calling us traitors, anti-American, terrorist sympathizers for years. SO, don’t try and pretend that you haven’t.

Now, more importantly I see that you are using the space bar now, thanks. I don’t care about spelling and grammar, but I do like to be able to read your posts broken into sentences.

  168. Spudge_Boy Says:

Leave Iraq to chaos like we did in Vietnam?

Why not? Bush finally went to Vietnam and found that they are very prosperous and are a huge American trading partner. So, now tell me again why we shouldn’t just leave.

Sorry, I have been posting on this blog for years and Clinton is brought up only to act as an excuse for some bullsh!t Bush has done. None of you people ever say that Bush is full of sh!T. It has only been for the last couple of weeks that you people call Bush on the carpet. But, it has been nothing but excuse after excuse for Bush with Clinton being the basis for the excuse.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Never has, never will.

Every time you say “Clinton did it too.” we all collectively yawn. Your guy is supposed to be so much better, but he isn’t. I appluad you saying it, but you are a very small minority of republicans that visit here. The rest think he’s the fu*king messiah.

I never called you a traitor or anti-American. I have been posting on here for two weeks and have yet to label anybody anything! I reserve those to the deserving.

And while that may or may not be true, your fellow conservative trolls have conditioned us to the right wing way of thinking. Just look at the posts from the other right wingers in this very thread. And yes I know that you are going to say “But the liberals here…..” We are defending our house. This is a progressive site that allows anybody to post. So, right wingers feel the need to come here and attack us. We don’t go to right wing sites and post “HEY YOU RIGHT WING FU*KERS, COME ATTACK US ON THINK PROGRESS.” We are just here discussing things and the trolls feel that they have to come and not discuss things, but harass us for no other reason than it gives them their jollies. They aren’t here to discuss or debate, just disrupt and harass.

Do you want to troll or talk?

That’s why there was a Hatch Amendment, to keep the DC workers from taking part in politics… they knew it was a net gain for the GOP.

Sorry, you can’t use the “liberal education system” and the “non-educated liberals” talking points. Pick one or the other.

  175. Leftists suck Says:

Typical move by the liberal media to try to silence the voice of conservative thinking….
No big deal though …with all the radio stations that stream their broadcasts online, this move will drive more people to listen to commercial free streaming radio.
What are they gonna do when they can’t sell advertising because no one listens to their station anymore ?
They can’t change the format to a liberal station because they already tried that with ” Airhead America ” & it was a resounding failure.
The conservatives to rule talk radio & it is because the majority of the population agrees with them.

Can you site one link to back up your claim?

Because 73% of Americans want out of Iraq.

    54% want Cheney impeached.

69% are against Bush commuting Libby’s sentence.

Now if you want to say conservative radio works because conservatives listen to the radio and progressives don’t, that would be a lot more accurate and truthful. Otherwise, you are just spewing talking points and we know you wouldn’t want to do that now would you?

  177. Johnny Swank Says:

Why do you assume I am a Republican? Because I call out democrats on their cr*p? Their all full of cr*p! Each party lies. It’s politics. I just can’t stand each side claiming to be better than the other when they are all full of sh*t. I want a leader we can all rally around. I know thats foolish, but where does the hatred around here come from? I guess it’s better to confront in here. Next President no matter who it is, one side is happy, the other side miserable, and the ignorant remain ignorant. Have a nice weekend

  178. Leftists suck Says:

You don’t need any polls or links to prove that Conservative talk radio is popular.

The ONE & only radio station that the Leftists tried was
“Air Amerika” & it failed because no one listened.

Conservative talk radio on the other hand continues to thrive on hundreds of channels throughout the country.
