I agree comparing Libby to a fallen soldier was offensive. However, to compare him to a pawn in the Left Wing assasination game seems to better capture the essence of the situation. The leak issue was settled long before this case went to trial — as we all know! With Dick Armitages’ tardy revelation that he outed Ms Plame why did this special prosecutor feel it necessary to pursue a man who did not out Valerie – She was already out.
The pardon issue is another example of thoughtless people with “kill Bush” emblazened on their minds, attacking the sitting President of the United States. The pardon was a reaction to a vigorous, political attack on the Administration. Sure the Republicans mildly attacked the Clinton pardons – have any of you “kill Bush” folks looked at the list and the rationale for the Clinton pardons — talk about paying debts — just awful. I would not dare compare our current President to the prior administration, he is so far above them in character and leadership that it would be a silly comparison.

The sound you hear is a tipping point, because it’s not JUST the Libby commutation: Libby’s just one more scandal in an Everest-high pile of corruption.

You’d have to go back to Warren G. Harding to find comparable muck. One difference: Bush is a weaker president. That takes into account the anecdote about Harding being found weeping one day: “I have no business being President of the United States,” he wailed.

Bush lacks even that self-awareness.

I completely agree. Stop the lies dead in their tracks. Especially since the liars are not expecting to be called out on them and have to defend them. And notice how he starts claiming that David Shuster had his facts wrong about Libby. I doubt that guy attended th trail every day like Shuster did. I’d prefer him to be the fill-in host on Hardball any time Tweety needs a day off, but as the next poster said, we would lose him as a great journalist. Maybe he can just sit in on the show and act as an on-air fact-checker for MSNBC.

David covered the Libby trial from the beginning, so he really knows his stuff. Recently some other talking head kept saying that “real people” don’t know or care about Scooter Libby because the story is “too complex”! Ha! Shuster can manage to explain it all very clearly, so one would think that the more ‘experienced’ “journalists” should be able to. Maybe David’s recent marriage gave him the extra confidence to really go after this guy?;-)

I agree with you on Shuster being more of an asset in a support role, for now anyway. But it will be interesting to see how Matthews handles himself when he comes back–hopefully he will learn something from David and from their viewers’ (our) reaction to this great interview.
