“Global warming is radically changing the face of Mount Everest, the sons of the men who first reached its summit 54 years ago said.” The sons of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay say “their fathers would no longer recognise the world’s highest mountain,” noting the base camp is now 132 feet lower than it was 53 years ago.
Triple-digit temperatures are expected to set records in parts of the West. Forecasters predicted a high of 107 in Boise, ID, and 125 in Baker, CA. Residents in some states were warned “that outdoor activities could be dangerous except during the cooler early morning hours.”
Eighteen people died in Baghdad “after a car bomb blew up outside a photo shop here as members of a wedding party waited Thursday night for the newlyweds to get their pictures taken.”
“The bald eagle may be soaring back from near-extinction, but hundreds of other imperiled species are foundering, as the federal agency charged with protecting them has sunk into legal, bureaucratic and political turmoil.”
Nearly half of the National Hurricane Center’s employees urged the Bush administration to replace their boss. “The staff of the National Hurricane Center would like nothing more than to return its focus to its primary mission of protecting life and property from hazardous tropical weather,” they wrote, “and leave the political arena it now finds itself in.”
After a concerted lobbying effort by property developers, mine owners and farm groups, the Bush administration scaled back proposed guidelines for enforcing a key Supreme Court ruling governing protected wetlands and streams. “There are definitely waters that will not be protected because of this latest guidance,” said Navis Bermudez, a water policy analyst at the Sierra Club.
“An exodus of highly trained mid- and upper-level firefighters” from the U.S. Forest Service has left “swaths” of flammable national forests protected by little more than luck. “On any given day, about 40 of 271 U.S. Forest Service engines remain in firehouses rather than on patrol, idled by a shortage of supervisors.”
The New York Times writes, “There is no better measure of the power of the health care issue than this: Sixteen months before Election Day, presidential candidates in both parties are promising to overhaul the system and cover more — if not all — of the 44.8 million people without insurance.”
“Impeachment center” opens in Los Angeles. “A storefront ‘impeachment headquarters‘ emblazoned with American flags opened July 4 with a mission to remove President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. … The center is sponsored by Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles, Westside Greens, Santa Monica Democratic Club and the Los Angeles Greens.”
And finally: Today is President Bush’s birthday. The Houston Chronicle’s Julie Mason writes that Bush’s 61 years old physique is showing the demands of the office. “For Bush, his cumulative burden, with perhaps the Iraq war being most prominent — takes a heavy toll that is showing on his face and also in his demeanor, which is less jokey and more testy than previously. Some days, Bush looks exhausted.”

July 6th, 2007 at 9:26 amI've long ago given up television but I made a point to watch Larry King's interview with Al Gore last evening. Wow! Imagine where this country would be right now if he hadn't been shafted by a stolen election?
We certainly wouldn't be in the fix we're in....that's for sure.
He presented himself like the true statesman that he is - A Harvard grad with an intellect which scares the tar out of the neocons because when it comes to "the conversation", they can't even find the words necessary to begin a dialogue with this modern-day "prophet", can they?
We sat there watching and asked ourselves: Can you imagine The Shrub communicating with this level of dignity?? Can you imagine The Shrub using vocabulary words higher than duh....eh....bring 'em on??
What a laughingstock Gore makes out of the POTUS! Amazing contrast, isn't it?
And, it's becoming clear that Gore has accelerated himself personally and globally and has more respect than the bush cabal combined at this point. So, when asked about a potential candidacy, I believe he's now made it clear (much to the chagrin of a majority of americans) that he has no plans to run. Why should someone this personally and spiritually evolved come in and attempt to clean up the fecal material which this administration has plastered this country with?? Why WOULD anyone believe that it's an achievable proposition? Gore probably realizes that our democratic "tipping balance" has been reached and that equalibrium cannot be reinstated. Why beat a dead horse? Besides, Gore has much larger things on his plate right now than focusing on a dying democracy. He's focused on a dying planet, folks! And that's precisely where he needs to be!!
July 6th, 2007 at 9:26 amHi Raven! Yes, but where would a plastic surgeon begin with the problems this guy has? I think he should go on that show "The Swan" because he would, hands down, be the biggest Ugly Duckling in the group.

July 6th, 2007 at 9:29 am"Julie A. MacDonald, a deputy assistant secretary of the Interior who oversaw the endangered-species program, resigned last month after the inspector general found that she had ordered scientists to change their findings, and shared internal documents with lobbyists for agricultural and energy interests.
MacDonald, who owns a Sacramento-area ranch with her husband, took a particular interest in California, forcing cutbacks in proposed habitat protection for several listed species, including the Klamath River's bull trout and the Southwestern willow flycatcher, a bird that ranges from New Mexico to Southern California.
Last week, House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick J. Rahall II (D-W.Va.) announced he would hold hearings on reports by the Washington Post that, in 2002, Vice President Dick Cheney interjected himself into a dispute over Klamath River water flows.
According to the Post, after Cheney objected to the amount of water withheld to preserve fish, it was diverted to irrigation and an estimated 70,000 salmon died, including a small percentage of coho, a species listed as threatened in the region.
"Vice President Cheney turned the science upside down for political reasons," said Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez). "They had to close the fishing season. Taxpayers shelled out $60 million for businesses and boats."

Smearing Gore's son is dirty politics
Friday 6th of July 2007
by Jay Randal
The Internet blogs were filled with personal smears of Al Gore's son, yesterday, as a way to attack Mr. Gore in mean attempt to prevent him running for president.
GOPer goon attacks on Gore's family is dirty politics, so are indicative of vile Karl Rove's style of smearing opponents, plus it reveals GOPers as nasty hypocrites.
President George Bush's two daughters are no saints, since they have been exposed as party girls who like to get drunk, and have been seen using drugs at parties.
Former Governor Jeb Bush's children have been seen in the news: One of his sons was caught by police in a car naked screwing a girl and his daughter doing drugs.
Therefore it is stupid for GOPers to even mention Al Gore's son doing something dumb, because Bush kids have done far worse stuff, so this could boomerang too.
Pres. Bush and his brother Jeb would be wise to stop the attacks on Gore's son, or face wide-open counterattacks on their kids, so end this cycle of dirty politics.
(Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)

The Founding Fathers considered the Constitution to be a living document... That means that is should evolve, like all living things - or it will become extinct.
The intolerance isn't mine. It belongs to the conservative christians who embrace the Old Testament and it's violent and divisive mindset. I simply have called it out.
July 6th, 2007 at 10:48 amDRxJ > Bush Regime operatives are behind the attacks on Gore's son. I am just reminding Pres. Bush and his brother Jeb to call off the attack dogs or face all out attacks on their rotten kids. I would prefer this ends.

I've heard that one already, it goes: ..."and what did Gore do about global warming in the eight years he and Clinton were in office?"
They can deny that a problem exist but complain, wrongly of course that the Dems didn't adress the problem. The ability to hold two competing ideas in their heads while believing both to be true is rampant in wingnuttia.

July 6th, 2007 at 11:40 amMany of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims.
For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."
Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Here is a quote from the AMS' web site on climate change:
Despite the uncertainties noted above, there is adequate evidence from observations and interpretations of climate simulations to conclude that the atmosphere, ocean, and land surface are warming; that humans have significantly contributed to this change; and that further climate change will continue to have important impacts on human societies, on economies, on ecosystems, and on wildlife through the 21st century and beyond.

You're ilk are always saying that the country is overwhelmingly xtian. You saying they are wrong? LOL Thanks, it's was my initial point in lumping you all together to prove to someone else that they were wrong...
I'm done with you now.
You have fallen into the them and us trap. We are one.
Then act like it.
Show me where any major Christian denomination “call(s) for raping women and selling young daughters into slavery for sex…†because the bible says so.
Daryll's website link is around... Go to his church website...
WASP men are valuable though in your anger and pain you may not think so, and so are all men and women of all races and creeds.

I didn't say they weren't valuable, I just said that they aren't better than everyone else who isn't one, according to the christian right. Stop with the strawmen. It makes you look like you don't have reading comprehension skills.
Later...

Protestants are 52% of the population and Catholics are 24% that adds up to a majority hello. They are right and you again are wrong.
My "ilk"? Go on in your intollerant ways of stereotyping and labeling people with whom you disagree it only shows you for the narrow minded ignoramus you are.

July 6th, 2007 at 1:13 pmAdditionally going to Church or not does not make one a Christian hello.
You know what, Al Gore's son is fair game. Everyone left butt-ugly Chealsy Clinton alone, but as soon as Bush was elected you people started in on the twins. So screw Al "dangling-chad" Gore and his drug sucking hell-spawn. They probably did this on purpose anyway. Every liberal media outlet makes sure to print he was driving a hybrid. Hypocrite Gore is afraid of global warming because his air conditioner bills for three huge houses are so large. He drives around in SUVs and burns jet fuel faster than his son burn marijuana.
ROTFL

July 6th, 2007 at 1:29 pmI know its fun to bust their nuts but All Gores kid has some serious problems and I dont think we should make political hay of that. It does not matter what they do two wrongs dont make it right.
So Bush is "more testy??" That doesn't fit with WaPo's recent story about how "tranquil" the decider is these days...could that have been just another serving of WaPo Kool-Aid?
July 6th, 2007 at 1:35 pmThen Al should pay more attention to his family. Stay home Al, stop flying around.
July 6th, 2007 at 1:37 pmHappy
July 6th, 2007 at 1:45 pmMaybe you are right but that is his call. Besides the damage is done his son is 24 years old.

As usual, and as is typical, Mr.Drudge lies!
On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, "Did you know there's a White House dog?" Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time and as far as I know had never done any harm to anyone.
And of course he plays the "only the left attacks" while he himself attacks Chelsea by calling her "butt ugly" (like he's ever seen any female's posterior anatomy)
July 6th, 2007 at 2:12 pmWhy does the right hate???
My belief is that they aren't getting enough, and they're extremely jealous
Why does the right hate? Read any thread on this site about Ann Coulter if you want to see hate.
ROTFL, you people should look in the mirror more often, if you can stand it of course. ROTFL
July 6th, 2007 at 2:26 pmHappy Dude,
July 6th, 2007 at 2:38 pmGreat rebuttal of what I posted. Your debating skills, especially when I pointed out the Chelsea bashing from the right, is unmatchable.
(methinks that your DSBU has affected your tiny little brain)
ROTFLMAO!!!!!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!
Triple digit numbers will be the norm all week and there are still some ignorant fools who refuse to believe it - even when their own thermomenters are reading it. What buffoons!
July 6th, 2007 at 4:04 pmAt least Chelsea Clinton had a brain - something which the Dumb and Dumber twins, when put together, can't equal! hahaha! The twin applies don't fall far from the Dumbola Tree, do they? But I'm wondering who is dumber? Laura or The Shrub? I think it's a toss-up myself. Each time I hear lil' ms. laura chatter away in her phony southern accent, I can only imagine what she must have been muttering when she flew through that intersection and rammed her vehicle into her ex-boyfriend....yes, indeed....imagine the serendipity involved in that....vehicular homicide of an ex-boyfriend. It think it's safe to guess who dumped whom in that relationship???
July 6th, 2007 at 4:07 pmTwin Apples, that is! Dumb and Dumber and the Dumbola Tree!
July 6th, 2007 at 4:07 pmgoogle little laura....and her infamous vehicular homicide of her ex boyfriend sometime...
