Professor retracts Mr. Rogers smears.

By Faiz Shakir on Jul 7th, 2007 at 12:00 pm

Professor retracts Mr. Rogers smears.

Yesterday, ThinkProgress noted that Fox News was participating in an effort to “blame Mr. Rogers” for the “sense of entitlement” among some children today. The criticism of Mr. Rogers stemmed from Don Chance, a finance professor at Louisiana State University. Chance later contacted Fox News to issue a statement retracting his attacks:

The reference to Mr. Rogers was just a metaphor. I have no professional qualifications to evaluate the real problems or propose solutions. Mr. Rogers was a great American. I watched him with my children and wouldn’t hesitate to do so again if I had young children.

Chance’s lack of “professional qualifications” didn’t prevent from the mainstream media from catapulting his propaganda. Watch it:

Professor Chance probably just got an EARFULL.

  2. ann says:

Parents are the reason kids today have a sense of entitlement.

  3. Tom says:

Gee, I wonder if GDumbya watched Mr. Rogers. Professor Chance could actually be onto something here. That would explain quite a bit about GDumbya’s sense of entitlement and total lack of personal responsibility. After all, we do know that it’s always “a beautiful day” in GDumbya’s neighborhood, er, bubble.

  4. dbadass says:

Yeah, but Clinton made the parents do it. I blame the “Greatest Generation” they fought so their children would have better. Just like kids to go and enjoy that benefit.

  5. Zooey says:

I take it that now, after you say something particularly vicious, you’re supposed to say, “It was just a metaphor,” rather than the old-school, “Can’t you take a joke?”

    Noted.

  6. gummitch says:

At least the guy had the stones to retract his stupid remark. That’s more than we generally see when the networks broadcast this irrelevant tripe.

  7. Mugsy says:

I’d hate to think it, but he probably received a flood of angry mail.

  8. Jim says:

So I guess the latest strategy employed by people who say stupid, stupid things is “Hey, it was just a metaphor.”

  9. Tom says:

Yup. Metaphors like “bring ‘em on” and “mission accomplished”, I suppose.

  10. s says:

Seems like a lot of people have not figured something out. The Winger technique to spread propaganda is simple. Once the horse is out of the barn, you’ve achieved your goal. You retract later but no one is listening or cares. You’ve accomplished your objective. It’s like starting a rumor.
The administration has thrived using this gambit. It’s not that he’s now “sorry” or “got an earful” ( though he probably did). It was jus time to impliment the next phase……make a retraction. And yet…it’s been all over the news for a week. It sickens me. It’s why you can sue for slander and why gossip and starting rumors is so evil…..it sticks regardless. And people of low character will use anything that works.

    you have it!
…after you say something particularly vicious, you’re supposed to say, “It was just a metaphor,” rather than the old-school, “Can’t you take a joke?”

That was the same line Faoud Ajami gave to Schuster on Hardball yesterday when he compared Libby to soldiers fighting in Iraq — it was only a metaphor.

Are they getting more sloppy and desperate or are we all getting quicker to pick up on their bullshit.

  12. shane says:

Yup. Metaphors like “bring ‘em on” and “mission accomplished”, I suppose.

    Comment by Tom

And Scooter Libby is like a soldier in the Iraqi war.

  13. ann says:

“Yeah, but Clinton made the parents do it. I blame the “Greatest Generation” they fought so their children would have better. Just like kids to go and enjoy that benefit.”

Ha. Actually, I think you can trace the sense of entitlement in kids to the 80s. You know, when Reagan was in office. Kids can enjoy a better standard of living than their parents had without feeling they are somehow entitled to it. The problem is that no one stresses civic involvement – it’s all about the individual.

  14. Zooey says:

At least the guy had the stones to retract his stupid remark. That’s more than we generally see when the networks broadcast this irrelevant tripe.
    Comment by gummitch

You’re right, gummitch, I give the idiot credit for that. Um, what time of the early morning was this retraction aired….? :)

  15. Ashen Shard says:

The right wing rhetoric against the left has gotten so bad that ‘civic involvement’ and not focusing on the individual is automatically labeled as communist.

  20. RUCerious says:

This clown got his ass handed to him, at least he had the courage to apologize, unlike our idiotic trolls from last night.

  21. Katie says:

If today’s generation has a sense of entitlement it is because of the corporatization of this country and the constant bombardment of advertising they are exposed to. Why do you think Americans are in so much debt on credit cards? They daily see credit card advertisements that basically tell them that they are entitled to the “good life” and they can have the good life with their credit card.

  22. Marie says:

I wonder what people will be saying about the children of today who are learning that dishonesty overrules ethics.
Morality is nothing if one can make a profit with immorality.
Lying trumps truth, especially if your friends can help you beat the rap.
People used to gasp and say the president was teaching children that illicit sex is OK, when Clinton was in office. This president is teaching children things far worse with far greater impact.
Will children today grow up to be more cynical, more unwilling to participate in society, more hopeless than previous generations — or will they follow the lead of those high schoolers who challenged Bush to his face on his immorality?

  23. RUCerious says:

I think you’re right Katie. I wonder what % of Americans pay off their entire balance every month, month after month, year after year???

  24. Katie says:

    #22 – Marie

BINGO! That’s what really scares me. If I was a parent today I would be having some long talks with my children about honor, ethics and moral codes. Fortunately my lovely daughter is a 35 year old progressive who is out there fighting the fight for our environment. She just passed the California bar and is going into environmental law. She once told me that she wanted to be “the real Erin Brokovitch”.

  25. tablogloid says:

The appropriate metaphor for the Bushites is Eddie Murphy’s SNL satirical sketch “Mr. Robinson’s Neighbourhood” “Can you say lie, children? Can you say B&E?”

  26. Katie says:

“I think you’re right Katie. I wonder what % of Americans pay off their entire balance every month, month after month, year after year???”

I do, and I found out something interesting the other day. I am selling my house and buying a new house so just for giggles, I got my credit score from all three bureaus. I own a house with a $100,000 mortgage, have two credit cards I pay off each month and other than that, I am debt free. Well, my scores came in at the high 700’s with one at 810. So, I called the credit companies and asked them why I didn’t have a score in the mid to high 800’s. They told me I had two things going against me with my credit score. The first was that I don’t have enough credit – they advised me to get more credit cards. And the second was – because I pay off my balances every month.

    Go figure!

  27. Mark @ News Corpse says:

“I have no professional qualifications to evaluate the real problems or propose solutions.”

Isn’t that that a requirement for working at Fox News? I think it’s even part of the oath that they make prospective anchors take.

  28. RUCerious says:

Yeah, they penalize you if you pay off every month, cause they’re not getting their pint of blood out of you on a regular basis.
Ours was 930 when we bought our house three years ago. The guy just shook his head and gave us a killer interest rate.

  29. Katie says:

““I have no professional qualifications to evaluate the real problems or propose solutions.”

Isn’t that that a requirement for working at Fox News? I think it’s even part of the oath that they make prospective anchors take.”

You got that right. And did anyone notice that not once did they say that he was an Economics professor? They just referred to him as “a professor”. Faux Noise is famous for their lies of omission.

I despair for Americans who have had Bush, Cheney, Enron and the neo-con Crooks & Liars for role models. Who needs self-esteem when you can lie, cheat, and steal your way to the top? And who needs to think when you can download your essays? Buy an MBA online like Bush.

Hey hold there a darn minute, that might include me. Well other than the part about civic involvement.

I have found working class (usually dems) families to lack the sense of entitlement I find in the conservative homes I have been exposed to. I have a former Brother-in-Law who has really help “tie this whole room together”. The parents even subsidized a “cleaning lady” for the brief period of time he ever lived on his own. Family values?

You can doubt all you want. But if the following is intended as an argument of some sort: “Nor do you know what a “straw man” is. Nor do you know what a “Sophist” is.”

Well, we both know what that technique is called!

I asked you because you said:

“There must be a lot of mirrors where Mr. Pee is sitting, because he seems to see himself eveywhere he looks.

When, in fact, my name had been stolen, and is clearly visable on this thread and others.

If you were trying to imply that mine was a “straw man” argument, you have demonstrated that you do not know how touse the term correctly. I put up nothing false as an argument to refute you.

I simply stated that I doubted the poster calling itself “Mr. President” was you because I do not believe that you know what the “Prisoner’s Dilemma” is, nor a “straw man”, nor a “Sophist”. Explain those terms and I’ll start to believe that you know what your’e talking about.

And if you didn’t make so many inane posts under various idiotic names, perhaps people wouldn’t find you so easy to ridicule.

You do realize that you have not persuaded a single person here that anything you have said is correct, don’t you? (Your other personalities do not count, and they weren’t persuaded by you, they just parroted you.)

Why should any of us know who “stole” your name, if it actually was stolen? For all we know, you did it yourself because you can’t live without attention. there’s your strawman argument for you.

We don’t know if anyone did. If they did, how should we know who did it, and therefore, we’re all cowards??? Talk about irrational BS…

  88. Wayne A. Schneider says:

If “Mr. President” has a problem with his name being stolen, then he should lodge a complaint with TP like the rest of us have. If they do something about it for him, then maybe they’ll do the same for us.

And you’re right, TRoS. How were we supposed to be able to tell the difference?

  89. RUCerious says:

Ah, irrational BS. How succinctly that describes Mr Pee’s entire schtick.

  90. david says:

Well, of course it’s not Mr Pee. See

“Gah. when will you libs realize that you can’t reason with us, it’s blunt force politics all the way, rewrite the rules when needed, or ignore them if thats not possible and every so often blame Clinton, we’ve been running on this baseless platform of politics forever, we’ve quietly subverted the media over time, we did learn something during Vietnam….no it wasn’t regarding the will of the majority, please you plebes must be kept in the dark, destroying Net Neutrality is our next major initiative, we didn’t see that one coming, but we’re working hard to eliminate democracy there like we’ve done with radio and TV…our method of twisting your own strongest arguments against you in conjunction with obfuscation of the facts, lying, smearing and our synergy with corporate America’s like minded objectives have neutered this democracy, let the free market reign! Enjoy the Prisoners Dilemma that we’ve installed as your life, it’s the way we do things, well in a paranoid schizophrenic way that is.

    THIS IS NOT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BUT LOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    THERE IS MY NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

do YOU know who did this!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!??!!

    Comment by Mr. President — July 7, 2007 @ 3:38 pm

The fake Mr President actually knows how to right and compose an argument. The imposter has rhetorical flair. Mr Pee, on the other hand, has to resort to endless streams of punctuation and allcaps to give any weight to his bleatings.

Mr Pee is a strawman. And it’s so obvious by the ease with which everyone can knock down his arguments. Now, if he were Mr Sh!t, his ranting might carry more weigth, but he’d still be excrement.

    OT – but I just have to….
Just returned from a viewing of SICKO, which I highly recommend. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. I couldn’t speak for a while after the movie ended, I was so choked up.

Then we got home and found that LIVE-EARTH is on Bravo. I was going to watch the NBC replay later, but this is great! Melissa Etheridge was absolutely fantastic.

You idiots shouldn’t use a term if you don’t know the meaning.

  94. Jeremiah says:

Source one, the college Finance professor admits he is not qualified to comment on children’s television or Fred Rogers. The other source the Wall Street Journal used to smear the memory of Fred Rogers was a single anonymous post on an internet message board. The WSJ should be ashamed.

The only thing that surprised me was that the WSJ didn’t slip in a hard-core wing nut quote from American Family Associated on the benefits of beating children with a stick.

If you will take no action to stop the name hijacking, then stop b*tching about it.

  97. Sluggo says:

If the “experts” being quoted by FOX continue to back out of their own quotes like this, then FOX will just have to start making up fictional experts.

“Professor Franks from Ebonia University just said….”

  98. Karim says:

He was man enough to retract his comments. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Rogers’s estate still sued him.

  99. trippin says:

Professor Chance was also kind enough to email a personal response to my acerbic tirade, so that was appreciated too.

Notably, Zaslow of the WSJ, aslo on the recipient list, said not a peep.

This may be a case of right wing media like the WSJ and Fox run amok.

  100. Jim says:

I’ll bet almost everyone of those who posted a critical comment of Prof Chance is a card-carrying member of the entitlement generation. To paraphrase Shakespeare, methinks they doth protest too much. Clearly, they lost sight of the forest for the trees. Prof Chance never said Mr Rogers was the root cause of their sense of entitlement. He merely posited that Mr Rogers contributed to that sense of entitlement, which was, and continues to be, fed from numerous sources.
