Kristol: Bush Timed Clemency To Get Political Cover By Attacking Clinton»

This morning, the Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol — who accurately predicted the President’s decision to commute Libby’s sentence — suggested the order was timed to provide political cover for the decision by attacking President Clinton.

“Here’s why the president acted the way he did. He knew Bill Clinton was joining Hillary in Iowa on July 4th. No, I’m serious,” Kristol said. “So on July 2d, Ed Gillespie, who’s a very canny Republican operator, said, Let’s pardon Libby. Clinton will rise to the bait, and we could spend the last half of the week debating the unbelievable Clinton pardons against the defensible Bush pardon.”

Kristol concluded, “I regard this as an extremely clever Machiavellian move by the president. It cheers me up about the Bush White House, and I’m really heartened.” Watch it:

The Libby case is not comparable to anything President Clinton ever did. Libby was spared prison time because he was “charged with activities that involve knowledge of what his superiors in the White House did.” House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers said this kind of relationship in a commutation has “never existed before.”

If Kristol’s theory is correct that politics played a large role in the timing of Libby’s commutation, that provides yet another issue for Congress to delve into when it begins hearings on Bush’s abuse of clemency powers this week.

Transcript:

KRISTOL: Here’s why the president acted the way he did. He knew Bill Clinton was joining Hillary in Iowa on July 4th.

No, I’m serious. So on July 2d, Ed Gillespie, who’s a very canny Republican operator, said, Let’s pardon Libby. Clinton will rise to the bait, and we could spend the last half of the week debating the unbelievable Clinton pardons against the defensible Bush pardon.

So I regard this as an extremely clever Machiavellian move by the president. It cheers me up. It cheers me up about the Bush White House, and I’m really heartened.

Now they blame Clinton for Bush’s actions?

Do they any other tricks up their sleeves, or is this the only one?

  4. m12 Says:

I have to laugh at the Dims trotting out slick Clinton of all people to attack these pardons.

Why don’t they bring out Marc Rich as well?

Or is Jimmy Carter’s decrepid corpse not available?

Mr Carter came down hard on his successor

Former US President Jimmy Carter has said Bill Clinton’s pardon of a controversial financier brought disgrace on the White House.

Mr Carter, a born-again Christian known for his moral rectitude, said he thought there was “no doubt” that Mr Clinton’s pardon of Mr Rich was partly “attributable to his large gifts”.

“In my opinion, that was disgraceful,” he said, describing it as one of Mr Clinton’s “most serious mistakes”.

This prick belongs right beside Bush and Chaney at the Hague…along with Wolfie, Rummy and all the other warmongers who justify everything they do by wrapping it in patriotism.

Thankfully, *I* am heartened that many more Americans are seeing through all the BS that these guys have been hoisting upon us for years. I only hope it’s not too late.

Check out the Committee on the Present Danger.

NeoCon warmongers looking into the intelligence to justify invasion of Iran. Like the Office of Special Plans being run by AEI from the inside out.

And guess what? Wolfowitz is back at AEI, where it all started.

I think Scooter forced their hand. He wanted to get back to work and couldn’t with this looming in the very near future. You know he will be at AEI or somewhere helping to plan the next PR War of Iran.

With all this pressure on the White House, Iran is the only thing between them and Impeachment, and Cheney knows it.

  13. gummitch Says:

So I regard this as an extremely clever Machiavellian move by the president. It cheers me up. It cheers me up about the Bush White House, and I’m really heartened.

And that pretty well sums up Kristol’s commitment to democracy, here or anywhere else. He concedes it was entirely a political move and applauds them. “Oooh, I’m feeling much better about Generalissimo Franco, er, President Bush these days because he’s demonstrating what a vile snake he is.”

  14. Jay Randal Says:

i never cease to be amazed at the crap that flows from kristol’s mouth…. i mean, geeze…. whatever he is smoking, i want some

  19. mparker Says:

Only a lying asshat like Bill Kristol could be stupid enough to use the term “Machiavellian” as a compliment. As far as I know this is the only thing he’s ever said that was true. It must be a mistake. Idiot.

    From Wiki:

“Machiavellianism is primarily the term some social and personality psychologists use to describe a person’s tendency to deceive and manipulate others for personal gain.”

    That’s George Bush all right!

  20. veritas Says:

Bear in mind that William Kristol is a card-carrying member of PNAC (followers of Leo Strauss, grandfather of the fascist movement) and Kristol’s own grandfather, Irving Kristol, was one of the ringleaders in bringing the concept of fascism to this country.

With William Kristol it’s clear that “the apple never falls far from the tree”.

But to grin and chuckle about the oneupmanship of fascism over democracy is tantamount to treason in my estimation. I’d suggest that William Kristol had better keep his excitement over the overturn of the rule of law in this country a secret and not be caught finding humor and elation in it all.

  21. veritas Says:

Members of PNAC & The Federalist Society ARE CONTEMPORARY MACHIAVELLIANS. Be warned: They are presently waging a war on this democracy and the people of this country.

  22. veritas Says:

Just imagine: Prescott Bush supplying gas to the Hitlerian regime to gas Jews in their concentration camps before being outed and stopped; Irving Kristol is the new grandpappy of Fascism…..how did this country go so wrong? Look at the lineage, folks…..look at the root of the problem.

  23. katy Says:

I think Scooter forced their hand.
    Comment by willyloman — July 8, 2007 @ 12:30 pm

of course he did… but i doubt because he “wanted to get back to work”…

    he’s a chickenshit weasel who couldn’t even face a country club “prison”…

he forced their hand with, “get me out of this, or i’m talkin’”…

  24. veritas Says:

Is it my imagination or is Kristol looking a bit wan and sickly these days? Even when grinning from ear to ear in his unparalleled debouchery, he still looks like a very sick individual (physically, that is). We know what his heart is made of (stone) and that he lacks a human soul.

  25. oldtree Says:

if you continue to print that come out of it’s mouth, you do more to legitimize it as a opposing viewpoint. it is not a human as we understand it, it is far out on the fringe edge of a being, but you continue to put it forward?
should this really be a part of the public discourse?
let faux use it for their purpose, and allow it to be evaluated by human beings.

  26. veritas Says:

#23 Scooter is responsible for their flagging numbers - 26% - give me a break! And this unpopular nincompoop is still running this country against the wishes of the people (74%)??

I’m seeing that his recent commutation of Libby’s sentence (over the rule of law) is setting a precedent that, along with the precedent of preemptive striking which we also began, they will rue ever having occurred.

Bush’s commutation WILL tank his presidency - although the agreed upon article of impeachment will be that he’s “compromised our national security” by his capricious, cavalier handling of classified documents.

  27. veritas Says:

Vis-a-vis his imminent impeachment, I say this: Whatever works! And if this is what it takes to acquire bipartisan support to do so, then so be it.

  28. GOP08_DOA Says:

I’m always amazed to see how flippant these guys are when caught with their pants down. Even Barnes looked a little caught off gaurd by what was frothing from Kristol’s yap. Whoa. These neocons are weird. We need to remove them from power completely, asap.

MANY Americans probably would be puzzled to learn some congressional Democrats are in the employ of Russian President Vladimir Putin. That’s how it looks, anyway, with U.S. politicians erecting obstacles to the Bush administration’s plan to put missile defense systems in Eastern Europe.

The Washington Post reports the Senate likely will join the House in reducing funds for construction of 10 interceptor missile sites in Poland and deployment of radar systems in the Czech Republic. Last month, the House cut $40 million from a bill that would’ve paid for site preparation in Poland.

Senate Democrats said there are technical problems with President Bush’s plan, but they also voiced foreign policy concerns — evidence of Putin’s influence over Congress. If this keeps up, he may have to register as a lobbyist!

Putin claims Bush’s plan would upset strategic balances. That Russia is stung by deploying systems in countries that once belonged to the Soviet bloc was clear in Putin’s threat to aim Russian missiles at Western Europe if the plan progresses.

Things are calmer since Putin met Bush in Maine earlier this week. Putin suggested Russia host the missile systems instead of Poland and the Czech Republic, but Bush rightly demurred. The best way to guard against missile attacks from the Middle East is to stick with the original blueprint. One reason is planning already has begun; changing things will force delay. Another reason is Russia. Candidly, few know where it is headed, especially given Putin’s lust for restoring to Russia the influence it enjoyed during the Soviet era.

Share technology with Russia, make it a full partner in deterring attacks from Iran or terrorist groups. But don’t do it as a substitute for plans already started. Meantime, congressional Democrats should leave foreign policy to Bush and the State Department and remember they work for the American people, not Vladimir Putin.

These people side with the Iraqis, the Iranians, the illegals, and the Russians. When do they plan on siding with the USA?

  30. Arthur C. Says:

In the end, it will be the GOP that throws Bush overboard, “for the good of the party” i.e., to save their own sorry asses. Remember, it wasn’t the Democrats who made Nixon resign.

  31. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

  35. Roket Says:

And here I thought his sentence was commuted on the 2nd because the Judge denied bail earlier that same day; meaning Libby’s incarceration was imminent. Instead, they are using the “Clinton did it too” defense. Pure genius. Now everything is clear as mud and no one will question his motives.

  36. George Hayduke Says:

Kristol is a lying, traitorous slug.

  37. m12 Says:

  39. Rick Says:

So, opposing wasting money on a defense program that doesn’t work, against a non-existent threat, means you work for the Russians?

I mean, I guess they could spend the money on M1117 ASVs and Cougar MPAPV for the troops in Iraq, or held replace worn out equipment, or let NG and AR units get replacements for stuff left in Iraq, but that would be stupid.

And you actually think and “objectively pro-X” argument is going to get you anywhere? Wake up and smell the past four years.

Democrats, interfering with one of George Bush’s military initiatives? You know what the country is going to say about that? They’re going to applaud it, just like thely applauded Nancy Pelosi when she went to Syria. Remember how certain you were that accusing her of interfering with George Bush’s foreign policy was a really terriffic political ploy? He poll numbers went up after you goons yammered that talking point for two weeks, remember?

Go ahead, make it clear that Republicans still look at the world and at domestic politics exactly the same way as they did in the autumn of 2002. Keep it up all the way through November 2008. It’ll make it that much easier for the Democrats to get those 60 seats in the Senate.

It’s just… I don’t know. Naive. It’s like a kid saying that “But dad said I shouldn’t tell lies!”. Dangerously naive in the long run.

You see this all the time in the movies, where the guilty person, confronted by all around him with his guilt, drops his protestations of innocence and shouts, “I enjoyed it, I’d do it again, it was wonderful, and I have no regrets!”, or something to that effect. Kristol is a mouthpiece for traitors, and everyone who still has a brain and a moral center understands that. He’s got nothing else to say now than to revel in the genius of his leash-handlers evil.

  61. BottomBoy Says:

We’ve taken the first step, finding a place where there’s a possibility of us both existing at once, confronting the reality, albeit a ‘virtual’ online reality, where our existence is apparent to both of us. Now we can take the next step of reconciling ourselves, but I can’t be the only one to recognize this or the downward spiral of madness will continue and your compensatory idolization of Bush and the neo-conservative movement will continue. Remember, It’s only a crutch you/we use to stave off the overwhelming feelings of emasculation that have existed since you realized that Clinton was potentially having sexual relations with a woman, while a virile and strong Republican like yourself was left to his own ‘devices’ for satisfaction and all the while Falwell and Roberts et al were screaming from the TV that touching yourself was pure evil. We sought refuge in a manly figure and a strong manly administration yet it only resulted in you/we detaching ourselves further from reality; a bubble was formed if you will. We must burst this bubble and we can do it!

Bill Clinton, for good or bad, is enormously popular.

It doesn’t matter how clever the GOP political doctors try to do it, drawing a comparison betwee Shrub and Bubba hurts the Republicans and helps Hillary.

Mr. President, m12, Mr. Kristol, do you know what the American public takes away from this little stunt where you drag Bill Clinton into an irrelevant fight? They all say, “Mmmmm…Clinton. I wish he was president again. Bring back the 90s!”

Remember when you thought you were going to destroy Clinton and the Democrats by impeaching him, and his ratings went through the roof while yours collapsed and Newt had to quit? Remember when you though the Terry Schiavo business was really going to be a home run for you? Remember when you spent two weeks attacking Speaker Pelosi for undermining George Bush’s foreign policy, and her approval rating when up? Same thing.

You’re simply too out of touch with the opinions and values of the American public, and it causes you to keep making these political blunders as you try to appeal to them. And yet, you can’t fix the problem, because your all-knowing “gut” keeps telling you that you really do speak for “real Americans.”

It’s going to be a fun election season, watching the Republican nominee grow increasingly frustrated as his “The Democrats want to bring back the 90s!” argument only increases the Dem candidate’s lead.

It’s bad form to use someone else’s sign on name. I’ve had my name hijacked many times. Usually someone else notices first and smacks down the offender. If I see it right away, I post a comment disavowing said comment, and then copy the comment to TP, asking them to delete it. If it continues, I ask TP to ban the hijacker. They know when a name has been hijacked by the IP address — mine is always the same.

Mr President has had his name hijacked apparently, and chooses simply to whine and complain, rather than report it to TP, because he has some lame idea about snitching. So we’re supposed to do it for him, I guess. Yeah, right!

But Mr President has pulled so much crap on this board, that I wouldn’t put it past him to do this to himself — so there is a question in my mind as to whether or not willyloman actually did this.
