In recent days, a host of Republican Senators have announced their intention to call for a drawdown of U.S. troops in Iraq. With only 23 percent of Americans approving of Bush’s handling of Iraq, there are hopeful signs that political pressures are forming conservatives to break ranks with Bush’s Iraq policy. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, however, is catering to the 23-percenters.
This morning on NBC’s Today Show, host Matt Lauer asked Huckabee, if Bush delivers a more pessimistic assessment of the surge this week, “would you feel we owe it to the 150,000 or so Americans serving in Iraq to start pulling them out sooner than later?”
“We have to make a decision — do we either pull them out or do we put whatever is necessary to make sure we don’t leave it in a bigger mess than we started with,” Huckabee answered. “More troops?” Lauer asked. “It’s possible,” said Huckabee. Watch it:
Huckabee dodged the issue completely when Lauer noted that the armed forces are stretched very thin and may not have more troops to provide.
Huckabee fails to grasp that the U.S. occupation is driving the violence on the ground. As war czar Gen. Doug Lute previously noted, in order to reach a political solution, “You have to undercut the perception of occupation in Iraq. It’s very difficult to do that when you have 150,000-plus, largely western, foreign troops occupying the country.” A recent poll found 82 percent of Iraqis said they “lack confidence” in coalition forces, and 69 percent of Iraqis said coalition forces make “the security situation worse.”
UPDATE: Previously, Rudy Giuliani expressed his support for a second escalation.
Huckabee > how about you join up to fight in Iraq or shut the hell up!
July 9th, 2007 at 10:57 amMore Death!!! That will do the trick.
Looks like your done Huckabee.
I don’t understand why these don’t realize that the vast majority of Americans want this thing done and over.
July 9th, 2007 at 10:57 amI watched this interview this morning while getting ready for work, and couldn’t stop chuckling at the absurdity of the words coming out of his mouth. When he said we should send more troops, Lauer at least followed up Huckabee’s statement about sending more troops in with a question regarding the military is out of troops to send in. Huckabee ignored it. I wanted to hear Huckabee’s idea for where the troops will come from… thin air?
Also - Huckabee looks like a cross between Kevin Spacey and Richard Nixon.
July 9th, 2007 at 10:58 amthey would put someone that clearly isn’t as smart as a potato(e) on because it wants to be president? we commit people that act like this in the general public as a danger to themselves and the community.
July 9th, 2007 at 10:58 amperhaps they can go back to showing paris re runs for the anti depressant crowd?
Bush needs to start pulling back the troops from Iraq and his poll numbers will skyrocket.
July 9th, 2007 at 10:59 amJust because he’s being interviewed by the MSM, doesn’t mean he has a clue.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:00 amHuckabee’s an idiot.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:00 amYes Huck does look a little like Nixon, especially his nose and eyebrows.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:01 amYeah Huckabee, just repeat the need to stay in Iraq for the next 50 years, and the need to send in even more troops at every one of your campaign fundraisers. You couldn’t help the democratic party more.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:02 amHuckabee and Lauer … two people who have fulfilled the Peter Principle.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:03 amGolly gee whiz, you mean Gen. Eric Shinseki was right all along?

July 9th, 2007 at 11:04 amCan anyone point me in the direction of the videos where Cheney and Rumsfeld appear on a Sunday program and offer their opinions that “we’ll be greeted as liberators
One such interview occurred March 16, 2003 wherein Cheney is interviewed by Tim Russert :
Russert: “do you think the American people are prepared for a long, costly, and bloody battle with significant American casualties?â€
Vice President Cheney: “Well, I don’t think it’s likely to unfold that way, Tim…â€
I’ve seen the videos before but am having trouble finding them. I’ve gotta wonder why they are so hard to find.
I have found this gem though:

July 9th, 2007 at 11:04 amAs far as the numbers go, isn’t it really kinda the same level of troops now that the coalition numbers have diminished?
July 9th, 2007 at 11:05 am“Huckabee fails to grasp that the U.S. occupation is driving the violence on the ground. ”
WTF-the progressives fail to grasp Iran is fighting a by proxy war against us for you guessed it… THE OIL. However we will gladly purchase this oil, Iran will gladly steal it. Get a clue folks, these folks want to kill us, always have, what do you think they teach their children: HATE AMERICA! why? because they are jealous. They treat their camels better than they treat their women.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:05 amWhere will these troops come from, seems all the “supporters” of this war, are the one’s who won’t sign up and fight, typical Christian-Cowards.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:06 amObviously, you guys are not able to see the broad picture. We cannot fail. We must win this war. If we fail, the entire Middle East will fall.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:06 amFcukamee, you may have grown up in the same town as Clinton, but you

July 9th, 2007 at 11:12 amPlease…please…please let him be the Repug candidate…please…please….
July 9th, 2007 at 11:13 amUm, Huckabee…there are no more troops. The all-volunteer army of the United States has been stretched beyond its breaking point, and will take decades to recover as it is.
If you want more troops, you’ll have to start drafting citizens. I pray you and your ilk are stupid enough to try this.

July 9th, 2007 at 11:19 amKeep on blabbing Huckabee! Sure, that JUST what the American public wants. More troops in Iraq.
Yup, keep on reinforcing the perception that the GOP is represented by clueless, out of touch, war-mongering idiots like yourself.

July 9th, 2007 at 11:21 amI love fart smeller’s retorts. The defunding of the ARVN was the exact same tactic that the Bushits have for the Iraqis. We’ll stand up when…???
July 9th, 2007 at 11:21 amThe ARVN lost that war. I suppose you’d still be there, fighting the Cong if you had your way.
Lastly, other middle eastern nations, including Russia, will join together to destroy, God’s chosen, Israel.

Turkey will invade to fight the Kurds and try to take over the northern province of Iraq. Iraqi oil will be stolen.

Comment by Smart Fellar
Yea, right! I was ON those choppers before the fall, and I know that that occupation, just like this illegal occupation, was about regime change and a proxy fight with a weak country because we didn’t have the stomach to fight the Soviets directly.
The US is led by Chickenhawks, who only want a base for Israel security and to protect the price of oil, by keeping Iraq crude off the market in high volume.
Looks like you are also a Chickenhawk, who fights the “war” from the safety of a keyboard.

What utter rubbish.
sad and frustrating part is (still at this point) media doesn’t have enough guts to ask tough questions….

Al-Qeda threatens Iran!
I say let’s leave Iraq, get some popcorn, beer and watch these barbarians destroy each other!
Iran vs. Al-Qaeda! The greatest made for TV event yet!
Here’s the great news below!
Al Qaeda Front Group in Iraq Threatens to Go to War With Iran
Monday , July 09, 2007
CAIRO, Egypt —
The leader of an Al Qaeda umbrella group in Iraq threatened to wage war against Iran unless it stops supporting Shiites in Iraq within two months, according to an audiotape.
Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, who leads the group Islamic State in Iraq , said his Sunni fighters have been preparing for four years to wage a battle against Shiite-dominated Iran.
“We are giving the Persians, and especially the rulers of Iran, a two-month period to end all kinds of support for the Iraqi Shiite government and to stop direct and indirect intervention … otherwise a severe war is waiting for you,” he said in the 50-minute audiotape released Sunday. The tape, which could not be independently verified, was posted on a Web site commonly used by insurgent groups.
Iraq’s Shiite-led government is backed by the U.S. but closely allied to Iran. The United States accuses Iran of arming and financing Shiite militias in Iraq — charges Tehran denies.
In the recording, al-Baghdadi also gave Sunnis and Arab countries doing business in Iran or with Iranians a two-month deadline to cease their ties.
“We advise and warn every Sunni businessman inside Iran or in Arab countries especially in the Gulf not to take partnership with any Shiite Iranian businessman — this is part of the two-month period,” he said.
Al-Baghdadi said his group was responsible for two suicide truck bomb attacks in May in Iraq’s northern Kurdish region. He said the attacks in Irbil and Makhmur showed the “Islamic jihad,” or holy war, was progressing in the Kurdish areas.
At least 14 people were killed when a suicide truck bomb struck a government building in Irbil, Kurdistan’s capital, on May 9. Four days later in Makhmur, another suicide truck bomb tore through the offices of a Kurdish political party, killing 50 people.
In the recording, the Islamic State of Iraq leader did not mention Saturday’s deadly truck bomb in Armili, a Shiite town north of Baghdad, which killed more than 100 people. The attack was among the deadliest this year in Iraq and reinforced suspicions that Al Qaeda extremists were moving north to less protected regions beyond the U.S. security crackdown in Baghdad.
Al-Baghdadi criticized Kurdish leaders for their alliance with Shiites in Iraq’s government and accused them encouraging unsavory morals.
“The leaders of apostasy … have impeded the march of Islam in Muslim Kurdistan and helped communism and secularism to spread. … They insulted the religious scholars … encouraged vices and women without
July 9th, 2007 at 11:35 amwithout veils,” he said.
Lastly, other middle eastern nations, including Russia, will join together to destroy, God’s chosen, Israel.

July 9th, 2007 at 11:35 amBetter go hide in your bathroom, holding the bible over your head, the world is coming to and end. Don’t step outside, the islamic communist anti-christianb boogeymen are waiting outside your door for the chance to kill another (self) rightious christian such as yourself.
Oh, MY GOD!!!!! Hide, Daryll, Hide!!!
Did someone actually bring up “The Rapture”?
that’s great. But, unfortunately, quite apt when discusing the root cause of the Middle East conflict.
Hitchens’ book nails it right on the head.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:35 amWhere the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting “Jesus Christ,” so that it would read “A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;” the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination.
-Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography, in reference to the Virginia Act for Religious Freedom
Daryll, why do you hate our Founding Fathers??
July 9th, 2007 at 11:35 amHuckabee looks like Dan Hadaya doing Richard Nixon in that great, underrated comedy DICK. It stars Kirsten Dunst and the ever lovely Michelle Mathews. I highly recommend this to all liberals who’re feeling a bit down from all this bad news: out of a national nightmare can come great comedy.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:35 amHuckleberry is just another hypocritical Chickenhawk “christian” who wants to change or kill anyone who doesn’t believe like he does. He is one of the Dobson/Haggard/Robertson/Falwell Krew who use religion to morph their paranoia into violent actions that they don’t have the balls to do for themselves.
Maybe he should gain back some of that fat he lost to run for office; might make him look more like cheney or rover, the trolls’ and their fellow 26%ers’ HEROES.

Actually, it’s well known that the Christian Right hates Tom Jefferson. That’s why it’s so hard to find a $2 bill in America. It’s common in Europe, but Americans treat it like counterfeit and so it seldom circulates. Go now to your local bank branch and demand a wad of $2 bills. Let freedom ring.

They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them –- bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping” (2 Peter 2:1-3 NIV).

Al-Qaeda Suicide Bombers againsat Iranian suicide bombers!
It’ll be funny as hell!
I can’t wait!
It looks like your Pro-Iran because every person I spoke with today on this thinks this is great news!
Hmmm AceV….are these people you speak of real, or a product of discontinuing your meds?
July 9th, 2007 at 11:58 amI am going to copy 84. post and send it in. If it is Mr. President, he just sent in a bunch of “highjacked” posts to TP to complain about someone doing this to him. After, of course we sent in complaints about him. But if it is him, they will find out and that will be the end of Mr. P. if not, so be it.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:58 amYou notice he hasn’t said anything about it?
July 9th, 2007 at 11:59 am“More troops?†Lauer asked. “It’s possible,†said Huckabee.

Then….when we start looking bad, we divert attention by cubing the previous surge.
We’ll become less of an ‘occupying nation’, and more of an ‘occupant nation’. Houses are really cheap in Baghdad, and with the housing market here in the US, who WOULDN’T want to move there?
July 9th, 2007 at 11:59 amSave that Ahmadinejad shirt you have.
Yeah, Mr. P has said this a couple of times in his rants.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:00 pmPardon the off topic post, but…
In Baghdad on Monday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari warned that a quick American troop withdrawal could lead to civil war and the collapse of the Iraqi state.
AS if there wasn’t a civil war there already, and the state had not already collapsed???

Hey so your hope of a new Caliphate is dashed as your friends are about to kill each other!
Ha ha ha!
Too BAD!!!!
I agree that our new buddy Ace (aka Ace Ventura) sounds a lot like Mr P. I love the way he gets in a childish snit when no one will take the thread down the road he’s trying to get us on.
Also, the inability to post anything of substance on his own is telling. All he can do is cut/paste things from rightie web sites like townhall.com.

We all agree this is great!
That’s why I’m Pro-Withdrawal.
Step aside and let them kill each other!
It’ll be great TV.
I’ll have a 12 pack of Kirin Ichiban for it!
I can’t wait let the Muslim savages kill each other!
Mr Pee A Vee, the fight is taking place over there. America invaded Iraq without provocation. Why would anyone listen to diplomatic overtures from America again when demands that Saddam permit UN weapons inspectors were met and the USA still invaded. Why should some disarm if you’re going to shoot them when they do?
The Iraqis and the Afghans and the Palestinians have a right to self-defence. So do the Iranians. It’s not America’s business what kind of government these countries have. Just as you consider it none of the world’s business who you elect to be president. Peace is possible. And the sticking pointing is getting Israel to declare what its borders would be in a peace treaty. Instead, they keep building illegal settlements and that apartheid wall.

He doesn’t have a crystal ball, he has never ending faith that some omnipotent being is speaking through him. Most of us find this behavior delusional, he calls it faith.

Oh, Daryll has a “crystal ball” the way some people have a glass eye. I believe he has two of them where real men have actual ones.

And while we are at it, just cut out the redeployments back home, that 12 months home is not working out anyway and why do any of the troops need to go home for a rest?
July 9th, 2007 at 12:10 pmJust like sending the wounded back to the front saves on medical costs. Not letting them deploy back home at all will allow the surge to build even higher

Time for the truth about the Liberty
By Ward Boston Jr.
June 8, 2007
Forty years ago this week, I was asked to investigate the heaviest attack on an American ship since World War II. As senior legal counsel to the Navy Court of Inquiry, it was my job to help uncover the truth regarding Israel’s June 8, 1967, bombing of the Navy intelligence ship Liberty.
On that sunny, clear day 40 years ago, Israel’s combined air and naval forces attacked the Liberty for two hours, inflicting 70 percent casualties. Thirty-four American sailors died, and 172 were injured. The Liberty remained afloat only by the crew’s heroic efforts.
Israel claimed it was an accident. Yet I know from personal conversations with the late Adm. Isaac C. Kidd – president of the Court of Inquiry – that President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered him to conclude that the attack was a case of “mistaken identity.â€
The ensuing cover-up has haunted us for 40 years. What does it imply for our national security, not to mention our ability to honestly broker peace in the Middle East, when we cannot question Israel’s actions – even when they kill Americans?
Today, survivors of Israel’s cruel attack will gather in Washington, D.C., to honor their dead shipmates as well as the mothers, sisters, widows and children they left behind. They will continue to ask for a fair and impartial congressional inquiry that, for the first time, would allow the survivors themselves to testify publicly.
For decades, I have remained silent. I am a military man, and when orders come in from the secretary of defense and president of the United States, I follow them. However, attempts to rewrite history and concern for my country compel me to share the truth.
Adm. Kidd and I were given only one week to gather evidence for the Navy’s official investigation, though we both estimated that a proper Court of Inquiry would take at least six months.
We boarded the crippled ship at sea and interviewed survivors. The evidence was clear. We both believed with certainty that this attack was a deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew.
I am certain the Israeli pilots and commanders who had ordered the attack knew the ship was American. I saw the bullet-riddled American flag that had been raised by the crew after their first flag had been shot down completely. I heard testimony that made it clear the Israelis intended there be no survivors. Not only did they attack with napalm, gunfire and missiles, Israeli torpedo boats machine-gunned at close range three life rafts that had been launched in an attempt to save the most seriously wounded.
I am outraged at the efforts of Israel’s apologists to claim this attack was a case of “mistaken identity.â€
Adm. Kidd told me that after receiving the president’s cover-up orders, he was instructed to sit down with two civilians from either the White House or the Department of Defense and rewrite portions of the court’s findings. He said, “Ward, they’re not interested in the facts. It’s a political matter, and we cannot talk about it.†We were to “put a lid on it†and caution everyone involved never to speak of it again.
I know that the Court of Inquiry transcript that has been released to the public is not the same one that I certified and sent to Washington. I know this because it was necessary, due to the exigencies of time, to hand-correct and initial a substantial number of pages. I have examined the released version of the transcript and did not see any pages that bore my hand corrections and initials. Also, the original did not have any deliberately blank pages, as the released version does. In addition, the testimony of Lt. Lloyd Painter concerning the deliberate machine-gunning of the life rafts by the Israeli torpedo boat crews, which I distinctly recall being given at the Court of Inquiry and including in the original transcript, is now missing.
I join the survivors in their call for an honest inquiry. Why is there no room to question Israel – even when it kills Americans – in the halls of Congress?
Let the survivors testify. Let me testify. Let former intelligence officers testify that they received real-time Hebrew translations of Israeli commanders instructing their pilots to sink “the American ship.â€
Surely uncovering the truth about what happened to American servicemen in a bloody attack is more important than protecting Israel. And surely 40 years is long enough to wait.
Boston served as chief counsel to the Navy’s Court of Inquiry into the attack on the U.S. Navy intelligence ship Liberty. He also served as a naval aviator in World War II on the carrier Yorktown and as an FBI agent prior to his assignment to the Navy’s Judge Advocates General Corps. He is a graduate of the the College of William and Mary School of Law and a resident of Coronado.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:12 pmEveryone, please. This troll is obviously out to lunch. Please ignore him/her. Whether they’ve name-jacked or what post #99 is so outrageous that it should not be responded to. It only makes us look bad attempting to answer a ridiculous question like “Why shouldn’t we just kill all islamo-fascists?”
I know it’s hard. I’ve been guilty of replying more than I care to admit. But these trolls look the stupidest when their idiotic statements stand on their own.

July 9th, 2007 at 12:14 pmAnd, yeah, then we can have manditory door kicking in service for anyone who is born unto a family that does’t have a net worth of 1 million dollars! Yeah. Cus, I mean, we got a bunch of illegal immigrants to take the jobs they would have. So yeah, more troops to make the Surge work would make us more competitive on the Global Market and protect our intrests in the region. Yeah, that’ll work.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:14 pmdavid ,
I agree let’s leave the Middle East.

Oh well no Caliphate for you!
Hey since you like Muslims so much why don’t you convert, leave this country and move to Iran or Saudi Arabia!
You’re really an idiot and it’ll be fun watching fools like you in 10 years having some Live 8 type concert to save the Middle East after they’ve destroyed each other and their reduced to starvation.
Good luck with that, most Americans will laugh and cheer as they see their enemies helpless!
I can’t wait!

Mr Pee A Vee, the Joker, said
I’ll take that as a confession of your dishonesty.
Once again you disgrace yourself. And, as I recall, you bunked when I shot down your rather bizarre, wikipedia-fueled, cliff notes version of Byzantine history.
As for your obsession with ace, well he’s not a Nazi jerk. He may be obsessive, but he does post well-researched links. And some of his points might be over the top and hysterical, but they do provide balance to the usually whitewashed American media which almost never publishes a word from such writers as Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk or others.
Mr Pee, get real. Well, get some sleep. You’ve been up all night and you can’t even spell straight. And you must know that you’re now spamming for a losing cause. The surge has failed. The White House has even started talking about withdrawal behind closed doors. Impeachment will be on the table in September if Bush doesn’t change course. And a Cheney impeachment is almost a certainty.
Adios, little spammer. Whatever your name is.

So CT, PIP and Mr Pee are all one person, eh? And you know that, Joker/AV? Of course, it’s Mr Pee who has an obession with ace and not The Joker. Oh, what a tangled web….!
I think it’s obvious that there are really only a couple of trolls at work here and Mr Pee, CT, PIP, Caesar, The Joker, and AV is all one man’s pathetic attempt to be a group discussion. Sadly, we can see the repeated catchphrases and the odd syntax and we know. You’re a spamming fraud.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:31 pmdavid,
I’ve read more than one source on the Islami Jihad of the 7th Century.
Actually I’ve read about 10 Books on it.
I also have read 20 books on the Eastern Roman(Byzantine) Empire so I’m knowledgable on that subject.
I disproved your lie about there being no government as the Romans stilled controlled most of the Meditteranaen before your belove Jihadists invaded!
” never publishes a word from such writers as Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk or others.”
July 9th, 2007 at 12:33 pmStalinsists.
Great sources.
Mr. Ace also uses Nazi literature and is very anti-Jewish!
The lines have blurred between the Radical Left and Racist right!
Look at how David Duke is now a media hero for supporting Iran!
Ace and you prove that the Radical left, Racist Right and the Muslims are now allies!
Eventually the American people whethere Conservative or Liberal will wake up from Media brainweashing and turn on the above 3 groups!
Enjoy your time in the sun!
The Night is soon coming for you and your Nazi and Islamic allies!

Thgey’re sad as their dream of a Stalinist-Islamic state might not happen!
As for me I’m happy as hell!
This is the best news I heard in a while!
It wasn’t leaving Vietnam that brought about Pol Pot. It was the Nixon administration’s decision that Prince Sihanouk had to go because he wouldn’t allow US troops in Cambodia. Sihanouk managed to stay neutral for nearly 20 years and keep Cambodia out of the confilcts surrounding it. Because of his insistance on strict neutrality the US backed Lon Nol who overthrew Sihanouk. Lon Nol was corrupt and weak and allowed Nixon to bomb the Ho Chi Minh Trail which brought about the rise of Pol Pot and his followers who overan the country and created the killing fields.
Please stop making ignorant claims that can be refuted so easily. Arguing with you clown ought to have some challenge to it.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:45 pmAce Ventura,
Remember when david ran away crying when you mentioned the 7th century jihad!
That was f*cking funny!
July 9th, 2007 at 12:46 pmWhether they are one in the same or not, Mr. P and Ace Ventura have succeeded in doing what our beloved trolls always do - detracting from the intelligent conversation that we could be having here.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:46 pmAce Ventura,
Even when all the muslims die, they will blame the USA!
They can not imagine a world where the muslims are violent!
They think
Islam = peace
and
America = violence!
When the barbarians go at it and kill each other, then they will see!
July 9th, 2007 at 12:48 pmBut they will still blame the USA.
Vinnie, if we all just ignore them, they’ll have fun converstations with itself.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:52 pmI’m willing to bet the Troll with a Thousand Faces isn’t even resident in the USA. And it’s very simple to have two or three windows open to fake this hearty conversation with himself.
And it always ends the same way. A few serious posts followed by ad hominem abuse, followed by howling incoherent words and obscene slanders and propositions.
Islam-bashing is the new McCarthyism. One can’t say anything intelligent about Islam or the Muslim people without being branded as a Fellow-traveller or a traitor or a whatever Mr Pee’s favorite term of abuse is. Huckabee is just offering the usual pandering to the Far Right and the Fundamentalist Judeo-Christian Right.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:53 pmdavid,
“Islam-bashing is the new McCarthyism.”
Pro-Ismaic anti Judeo-Christian statements like your are the new Stalinism!

Mr. P, the emails are sent, the Ip address is there. if you namejacked after all those “snitches” you did yesterday, your time is short.
