Savage to immigrants: ‘Go back to where you came from.’
On July 5, hate radio host Michael Savage discussed a recent hunger strike organized by five students in the San Francisco area to show their support for the immigration bill:
Then there’s the story of college students who are fasting out here in the Bay Area. They’re illegal aliens and they want green cards simply because they’re students. … I would say, let them fast until they starve to death, then that solves the problem. Because then we won’t have a problem about giving them green cards because they’re illegal aliens; they don’t belong here to begin with. […]
We don’t need you as engineers. Go back to where you came from. Go back to where you came from and be an engineer. That’s all. Go give your talents to your home country. Go be an engineer there. You stole the education from us; now give it back to your home country. Go make a bomb where you came from. This is unbelievable.

July 9th, 2007 at 6:31 pmI imagine the students were here on Student Visas, therefore not illegal aliens. However, if they were demanding Green Cards I’d say they were wrong in their efforts. But, still Savage does what all talk-radio hosts do: yell loudly and wait for the ad dollars to come in.
There was a time when getting a student visa was allowed for only four year colleges and for specific fields of study. Now you can come from Saudi Arabia to a community college and take general accounting classes or art classes. Since 9/11 nothing has changed the path the hijackers took.

That’s the problem with the immigration debate. While it starts about being against ‘illegals’, it usually warps into being against ALL immigrants of a certain type, and then usually against all PEOPLE of a certain type. We see it in how quick these nativists are to spout “GO BACK HOME!” to someone who may have been an American citizen for decades, simply because they ‘look like an illegal’.

Oh, one other thing, we do need to do a better job of teaching immigrants about what it means to be American - freedom, human rights, democracy, our legal system, representative government, etc. Come to think of it, I think most Americans are due for a refresher on those things. Anyone who yearns to breathe free belongs here, and we need to do a better job of letting those people in.

There are laws and they should be followed. You should not be put on the fast track to citizenship or even legality simply because you’ve been here a while (and breaking the laws for the same amount of time).
I have no problem with illegals becoming legal but they should go thru the same process as everyone else.
I do think military service should be a fast track to citizenship, though.
That is called Libertarian. We are Progressives. You need to study up. Bill Maher is Libertarian. Ron Paul is Libertarian. We have some things in common, but a lot of things we don’t agree on.

Gates wants to up to 200,000 per year. That gets him an increase of 80k people every year that will work for 1/2 of what your children will work for when they finish they’re engineering degrees.

Try this instead: Stop incentivizing anchor babies (i.e. put an end to birthright citizenship), and build a wall on the border and hire more CBP (customs and border patrol agents). Some hungrier German shepard dogs might not hurt either.
What Savage is whining about is really 15 to 20 years of American complacency about illegal immigration. All of the sudden it’s a “big problem”.
Where the hell was Savage 10 years ago? He wasn’t complaining about lax immigration enforcement then. He was probably yelling his head off about all the evil things Bill Clinton and that intern had “done to American children everywhere”!

Savage doesn’t deal with that reality because he would no longer be able to worship the gods of capitalism.
It’s an irony to witness GOP-greed-apologists go after illegal immigrants rather than bash those who give illegals the incentives to keep on coming here. If employers were forced to only hire legals, there would be no incentive to jump the fence.

Conservatives like Savage/Weiner, and many commentors in this thread, are hung up on the term “illegal immigrant.” They foam and froth and scream bloody murder over it. They act as if the only problem is with people breaking immigration laws. That is not the case. The real problem is with undocumented WORKERS.
The term that we should all be using is “illegal labor”. THAT is the problem. Employers who choose to hire undocumented workers are the true criminals. They are leveraging the willingness of undocumented immigrants to work for less money to drive down the cost of labor across the board. They are profiting off of the decreased labor costs that come with hiring compromised employees.
Anyone who seriously wants to address the immigration issue should be focusing on one thing: enforcement of labor laws. Each and every employer in this country should be held responsible for verifying the legal status of its employees. Any employer found knowingly using undocumented workers should be imprisoned. Fine them too if you want to, but prison time should be compulsory. If we were to put the CEO of WalMart (or another large company who routinely uses undocumented workers) in prison for ONE NIGHT there would be a “great whooshing sound” of undocumented immigrants heading back across the border. Work is the only reason that 98% of them are here. If they can’t come here and get a job, they will go back home.

You act as if the domination of talk radio by right wing blowhards is because of the so-called “free market” at work. Bull. Aside from the fact that there is no such thing as the “free market”, the truth is that corporate owners decide what gets on the air and not the “market”. Ask Phil Donahue why his top rated show on MSNBC got cancelled in the runup to the Iraq War. His show got more viewers for MSNBC than any other program, which would translate into higher advertising revenue, etc., but yet because Donahue’s anti-war views conflicted with the bottom line interests of GE (who owns MSNBC) he was cut.
Air America has had its share of problems, like any business, but don’t be so stupid as to assume that it is the entirety of progressive talk. It’s not. Progressive talk radio has a market and is serving a segment of the market that right wing talk ignored for many years. Were the radio business truly run by market demands you’d see much more balance between right-wing and progressive talkers - in fact, they’d be up against each other on the same stations. Instead of segregated stations, they’d be integrated.
Don’t buy into the nonsense that “no one is listening”. Do the research for yourself and see the truth.

They come here to work, study, and feed there families. they are not terrorist nor bomb makers. What a shame if he thinks he represents all americans . That would say that all americans are bigots and ediots,we know that isn”t true! Just maybe he’s afried they will do on to him what pepole like he, have done to immigrants for so meny years! If he is so unhappy here, why doesn’t he go back where you came from. Oh! gee that would be the slug in the hole in the grown.—- P.S.– thank God there still are some pepole with live souls, and a sense of realildy . Like some who express themself on this list.
