Snow Falsely Asserts Lugar Believes Escalation Is ‘Working’

During the press conference today, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow blindly defended the President’s “surge strategy” and inexplicably argued that Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) supports the policy. “If you look at what Senator Lugar has said about the surge so far, he says that it’s working,” said Snow. “His comments indicate that he thinks it’s working.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/07/snowlugarresponse.320.240.flv]

In reality, two weeks ago, Lugar issued a sharp rebuke of the President’s “surge strategy.” On the floor of the U.S. Senate he specifically stated that the Bush administration’s “surge” is failing:

In my judgment, the current surge strategy is not an effective means of protecting [U.S.] interests. Its prospects for success are too dependent on the actions of others who do not share our agenda. It relies on military power to achieve goals that it cannot achieve. It distances allies that we will need for any regional diplomatic effort. Its failure, without a careful transition to a back-up policy would intensify our loss of credibility. It uses tremendous amounts of resources that cannot be employed in other ways to secure our objectives. And it lacks domestic support that is necessary to sustain a policy of this type.

While Lugar has yet to agree to act on his rhetoric, it is laughable for the White House to suggest that Lugar’s comments — and the comments of several other prominent conservatives — are any sort of endorsement of the President’s policies in Iraq.

Transcript:

QUESTION: And what does the president say to Republicans like Senator Lugar who say we can’t wait? What is his response…

SNOW: Again, I’m just not sure Senator Lugar is saying we can’t wait. What he’s saying is he’s concerned about the political atmosphere in this country and he’s trying to make sure that we don’t rip ourselves apart politically short of achieving the goals.

If you look at what Senator Lugar has said about the surge so far, he says that it’s working. His comments indicate that he thinks it’s working.

What he’s a little concerned about is the political atmosphere in this country, whether we can hold it together long enough to go ahead and give the surge an opportunity to demonstrate what the men and women of our military, what the men and women who are contractors, men and women working for the State Department and other departments and agencies of the federal government, whether they’re going to have an opportunity to demonstrate what their efforts have yielded in the last couple months.

lie, Lie, LIE…who needs the truth when you can make up whatever you want and get your 10 second sound bites out there as fact. Is Fox going to show what Lugar said? NO! They’ll show Snowjob’s BS as statement in fact.

    I swear he’s almost a parody…if the ramifications weren’t so terrible I’d laugh.

I’d like to offer a correction to the above paragraph: it is hardly “laughable” that the White House would suggest something that the public record proves is not the case — it is, rather, Standard Operating Procedure for this White House.

In other words, if Tony Snow says it’s sunny outside, better get an umbrella.

  6. Armando Gomez says:

The only “escalation” that is happening are the lies Bush and Snow are tossing at us. This U.S. occupation—not the Iraq war—is nothing more than dirt toss at our eyes.

  7. SGT Higgins says:

I don’t see that here. Didn’t seem that the WH was seeing it as endorsement so much as REFUSING to see it as the rebuke that it was meant to be.

    THE PETITION
STOP ILLEGAL VIGILANTE SECRET TORTURE OPERATIONS–Directed Energy Weapons National and International Torture.

Covert and or Overt Surveillance and Organized Harassment is currently done to civilians in the U.S.A. This is similar to the 1960’s Co-Intel-Pro when large numbers of citizens of United States of America including some members of Congress were under surveillance. Torture with Electronic Weapons is also currently done to civilians. Electronic Weapons are a part of the Directed Energy Weapon’s Arsenal. This torture is carried out in a fashion that is similar to “Involuntary Human Experiments of which there is a long history in the United States. To name an example. During the “Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment” 400 Black men were experimented on for 40 years, they were also prevented from getting out of the experiment. This was a human experiment that they did not consent to and prevented from getting the correct treatment.

Electronic Weapons issue out Radio Frequency Microwave non-ionizing radiation. Because of the torture done with “Electronic Weapons and the harmful effects of “Radio Frequency Microwave Non-Ionizing Radiation” millions of lives are shattered and disrupted by inhumane involuntary experiments. Many people have died as a results of these involuntary experiments. These are LETHAL weapons (described by the US Military as “Slow-Kill” and “Soft-Kill”.”Remote Electronic Torture-Assassination”; “Remote-Electromagnetic Torture-Murder Weaponry”. are more descriptive terms. These weapons are ALL Neurotoxic (cause Brain-Damage) and Carcinogenic (cause Cancer). The USA population has a greater than 50% Cancer rate and a rapidly rising diagnosed neuropathology rate. This radiation also causes genetic damage.Through the wall applications of “Directed Energy Weapons” are used; therefore perpertrators of this torture can be in a remote location and torture their target/victim with “Electronic Weapons”. Congress and the military has approved funding for Directed Energy Weapons research. Weapons get more funding when there is a dual use. The DOD has been working hand in hand with the DOJ to use the weapons domestically. If the innocent, unprotected-from-their-own-government&military, decent, non-criminal Public are not clearly informed about the source and lethality of the attacks, their chances for survival are practically nil. DESIRED OUTCOME
What we want done about this. 1. Impartial open investigations to expose and end this torture immediately. 2. Protection for all whistle blowers who can assist in exposing covert torture with “Electronic Weapons”. 3. We demand that treasonous criminals stop harming/killing us. There are laws against vigilantism, hate-crime, domestic terrorism, and conducting experiments on the unwitting public. We are DEMANDING that they cease & desist immediately or face consequences befitting their crime.
We make this statement of fact that Torture is going on in the USA.
STOP ILLEGAL DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPONS & DOMESTIC TERRORIST TORTURERS IN THE USA! WHO WE NEED TO INFLUENCE
Governmental Agencies that assist with Human and Civil Rights need to do their job. HOW LONG WILL WE CAMPAIGN
Until this is exposed and ended.

Hey Ringo check out how badly Bush wants to stop terrorists.

U.S. Aborted Raid on Qaeda Chiefs in Pakistan in ’05

WASHINGTON, July 7 — A secret military operation in early 2005 to capture senior members of Al Qaeda in Pakistan’s tribal areas was aborted at the last minute after top Bush administration officials decided it was too risky and could jeopardize relations with Pakistan, according to intelligence and military officials.

The target was a meeting of Qaeda leaders that intelligence officials thought included Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin Laden’s top deputy and the man believed to run the terrorist group’s operations.

But the mission was called off after Donald H. Rumsfeld, then the defense secretary, rejected an 11th-hour appeal by Porter J. Goss, then the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, officials said. Members of a Navy Seals unit in parachute gear had already boarded C-130 cargo planes in Afghanistan when the mission was canceled, said a former senior intelligence official involved in the planning.

    The mission was called off.

No reallity for republicans Domestic terroism is when ever some one gets mugged or how about a drive by shooting in a neighborhood. or a shootout in a school All forms of domestic terror And don’t forget about the ANTHRAX ATTACK MR WIZARD.
But a lass you neo ass clowns can’t Add or Subtract just point a finger and hate and then praise the lord for spreading the word

  89. gramma says:

Mr Snow looks TERRIBLE lately! I worry for the mans` health following the recent CA relapse.

  90. John from Taos says:

Anyone who thinks this is merely a case of a criminal administration lying to save its ass is missing the big picture. When I look at the repeated blatant lies, piled on one after another without even a hint of guit or worry about being found out, it seems as if the moral foundation we all depend on has simply washed away.

Something very, very strange and BIG is underway in the world. I hope at least a few people look beyond the politics of the moment and take it in.

  91. Marie says:

Snow is not looking too good these days. I don’t know if it the stress of his poor health or the stress of his rotten environment there in the Whie House: nothing but bullshit, hot air, rotting souls — the stench must be overpowering — it sure can’t be healthy — except for Darth Cheney — nothing can harm him — he thrives in those conditions — it’s essential to his existence.

  92. Mistress Z says:

As far as I know, if you rape, kill and beat children but you repent yourself from those sins on your deathbed, then you get a nice, puffy cloud for all eternity.
    Later, Z!!! :)

Oh yeah…..I keep forgetting about the Invisible Sky Fairy.

    Later, Juan. :)

I suspect that thousands of people wrote into Hardball suggesting that Shuster take Matthew’s place and Tweety is getting worried about his job. I still want to see him out and Shuster in. I don’t trust Matthews.

And I agree. I was one of those who wrote to MSNBC and Dan Abrams as well in praise of Schuster – and likewise I have also written them with complaints of Tweety’s obsession with sex and gossip and blondes, neglecting the real news. There must be thousands of us who tell the media what we think.

  94. hterrya says:

Tony’s mouth was open, so you KNOW he was lying!

  95. Mr. President says:

    Of course it is working!!!

We are the United States of America!!!

Dear Lord, Mr. (current corrupt, crooked) president TROLL!

Are you still haunting the threads of progressive Americans whose bodily wastes your are not worthy to haul out?

With all the lies, phony arrogance, lack of moral foundation, sleazy NeoCon talking points you’ve been successfully called out on, you should be hiding under a rock.

    You truly are shameless!

UNDER THE BRIDGE, LYING, PHONY, ARROGANT, IMMORAL, NEOCON WORSHIPPING, SHAMELESS TROLL!

  97. spit take says:

    Spudge,

And had the mission NOT been canceled (for being too risky), you would accused the whole thing of being “another phoney stunt” designed to keep the sheeple fearful. You would have questioned the “timing” and then you would have dismissed it as propaganda, while at the same time you would have also accused Bush of invading another sovereign nation and thus causing more terrorism.

Sorry Spudge…You are just another mush-for-brains Lefty crackpot, blinded by your own hatreds.

    Comment by Ringo — July 9, 2007 @ 6:06 pm

What exactly does Spudge’s presumed (by you) reaction have to do with the facts presented?

Specifically, what does Spudge’s presumed (by you) reaction have to do with the fact that Bush CANCELLED THE MISSION to go after top al Qeada leaders?

  98. PG says:

Note to self: Chronic lying causes cancer.

  99. Publicus says:

Snow and Bush don’t speak for Lugar. And they sure as hell don’t speak for the American people.

The American people OPPOSE torture, warrantless wiretaps, secret prisons and an endless occupation of Iraq which kills and maims our soldiers as well as innocent civilians, while creating thousands of new anti-American terrorists every year.

  100. Sluggo says:

We are starting to see the Administration spin down to the earth in flames. The only question remaining is how many Republicans are willing to stay on board or parachute out.

Bush can offer the current Republicans running for re-election nothing. He is going out of office, he can’t get any legislation passed, he is of no use in fund-raising, and his presence is actually “toxic” to those Republicans seeking re-election.

Continuing to support Bush is actually a good sanity measure for Republican politicians. Those continuing to support Bush exhibit self-destructive tendencies.

  101. Probus says:

Snow can spin this as much as he likes but he can’t change the fact that senior republicans are breaking with the president on his Iraq policy – Lugar, Smith, Domenici, and Snowe. It is clear to these republicans, all democrats and a majority of the American people that the surge has failed. That’s why Bush’s approval rating is sitting at 26 percent. In the end Snow hurts his own credibility when he makes obviously false statements.

  102. S. says:

Poor Tony, he’s become Baghdad Bob. Sad.

  103. Karim says:

    Is Snow smoking weed again?

  104. tom says:

I first heard of Tony Snow when he would pinch-hit for Rush Limbaugh on his radio show (during the Clinton years, I was just trying to get the other side of the story). Then he goes to the Fox News Propaganda Network, and then to the WH. While yards smarter than McClellan, he is just FoxNews from the WH podium. Good thing King George has no power, or thoughts, and the TelePrompter works. And Laura has given up on him. They don’t even have the same pillows.

What if Georgie were allowed to think, write, speak, and listen? Things could be worse. Darth Cheney will have another heart attack, I hope, and then (since Karl will be with his little boys) Gates will step in and halt the nonsense. Unless he consults with Kissinger and Brezyinski. Why don’t we get some USA rednecks like Thompson, into the Repub chairs?

  105. tom says:

And I am getting old, can still get it up, and some even look at it. But if all things have a reason, then the Cancer Man should take Tony, and the Heart Man should take Darth Cheney, and may the Lord of Shrinks take King Georgie. Does Laura know he is bi? He was called “The Mouth” in his freshman dorm at Yale. “Just trying it out” he said, drunk as usual. How his grades at that rubber-stamp institution were a little bit higher than SwiftBoat Kerry, still defies imagination. I am sure the school is still reeling over that one. Send your kids to Harvard, or even Cornell. Not the StampU.

  106. davidual says:

What we have here is a cat and mouse game between White official press and other media outlets. If there is one way to distract from, or otherwise cover up, past lies it is to purposefully make incorrect statements that are designed to bring into question the other report.

It’s the catch-me-if-you-can I’m outta here line. It brings into question the statement of another for the sole purpose of distracting from your own statements. A very capable statement from an administration that is normally short on truth!
