If there is one way to distract from, or otherwise cover up, past lies it is to purposefully make incorrect statements that are designed to bring into question the other report. It's the catch-me-if-you-can I'm outta here line. It brings into question the statement of another for the sole purpose of distracting from your own statements. A very capable statement from an administration that is normally short on truth! What we have here is a cat and mouse game between White official press and other media outlets. If there is one way to distract from, or otherwise cover up, past lies it is to purposefully make incorrect statements that are designed to bring into question the other report.
