ThinkFast: July 9, 2007

With the “last pillars of political support among Senate Republicans for President Bush’s Iraq strategy…collapsing,” debate within the White House “is intensifying over whether Mr. Bush should try to prevent more defections by announcing his intention to begin a gradual withdrawal of American troops from the high-casualty neighborhoods of Baghdad and other cities.”

The Washington Post reports “the Iraqi government is unlikely to meet any of the political and security goals or timelines President Bush set for it in January when he announced a major shift in U.S. policy.” Defense Secretary Robert Gates today canceled a visit to Latin America so he can participate in policy meetings in advance of a report to Congress July 15 on the results of the escalation.

A New York Times source says the massive bombing in Amerli, Iraq, this weekend killed 155 people, making it now “the worst single bombing in the war (the March bombing in Tal Afar killed 152).” In Amerli, “almost everyone seemed to have lost relatives or friends, if not entire families.”

Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff reports that Bush’s decision to commute Libby’s sentence was done in part to avoid “a fracture with the vice president.” Also, Bush reportedly instructed his counsel Fred Fielding to see “if there was compelling evidence that might contradict the jury’s verdict that Libby had lied to a federal grand jury.”

Attacks on supply convoys protected by private security companies in Iraq have more than tripled as the U.S. government depends more on armed civilian guards to secure reconstruction and other missions.”

“Crews stayed on the offensive against major blazes around California and other Western states” this weekend, as Utah experienced its “largest-ever wildfire, at 283,000 acres,” and “ferocious” fires “scorched parts of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.”

“The Bush administration has failed to fill roughly a quarter of the top leadership posts at the Department of Homeland Security, creating a ‘gaping hole’ in the nation’s preparedness for a terrorist attack or other threat, according to a congressional report to be released today.”

In an op-ed entitled “Spineless on Sudan,” Nicholas Kristof writes Bush has “turned away” from Darfur. “For years, Mr. Bush’s aides have discussed whether he should give a prime-time speech on Darfur to ratchet up the pressure; he still hasn’t. Laura Bush just completed a four-nation swing through Africa, but she didn’t include a visit to any of the areas affected by the Darfur crisis.”

This weekend’s Live Earth concerts broke a record “for an online entertainment show by generating more than nine million internet streams, Microsoft web portal MSN said.”

And finally: The new White House briefing room will reopen on July 15. The refurbished quarters “will have 49 leather chairs (which, incidentally, are slightly wider than the old ones). Asbestos has been removed, and presumably, so have the rodents that once prowled in the shadows.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Go to CNL and watch George Stephanopoulos dress down Ron Paul. It’s disgusting.

TP, I think you have chosen the wrong preposition. The sentence should read “to avoid a fracture by the vice president.”

Well, so much for “respecting the jury’s verdict”. Another lie from the Liar in Chief.

Bush commuted Libby’s sentence for one reason and one reason only, to buy his future silence.

I am very angry with Lahey for saying that calling Libby back as a witness is of no use. That’s horse pucky. All Congress needs to do is to give Libby immunity and they can bring him back and force him to testify. If he still can’t find his memory or continues to lie, they can throw his ass in jail for contempt of congress.

As usual, the Democrats are wimping out again.

    Metallica: Terrorist threat?

Metallica singer James Hetfield was investigated by UK airport officials who believed he was a terrorist this week, it has been claimed. The star was barred entry to Luton airport on Thursday and questioned by staff who were concerned about his appearance. Fears that Hetfield might be involved in terrorism were apparently founded on his “Taliban-like beard”, according to The Times. He was allowed to leave the airport after a brief interrogation, when he persuaded officials that he was a rock star. Metallica play Live Earth at Wembley Stadium in London tomorrow, before headlining the venue for their own show on Sunday evening.

    FTC Abandons Net Neutrality
By: Nicole Belle via crooks and liars

This is bad, bad news for all of us…

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has decided to abandon net neutrality and allow telecoms companies to charge websites for access. The FTC said in a report that, despite popular support for net neutrality, it was minded to let the market sort out the issue.

This means that the organisation will not stand in the way of companies using differential pricing to make sure that some websites can be viewed more quickly than others. The report also counsels against net neutrality legislation.

Information Week via Save The Internet:
…“the FTC sided with high-speed Internet providers such as AT&T and Verizon,” and trotted out once again hollow justifications like “such rules could stifle innovation” and “”This report recommends that policy makers proceed with caution in the evolving, dynamic industry of broadband Internet access, which generally is moving toward more – not less – competition,” which it probably…copied from industry propaganda.[..]

Afraid of the potential stifling of information to you? Good. Then go to Save The Internet dot com and see what you can do to fight. There are literally only days left for you to get your voice heard.

Sheehan Threatens To Run Against Pelosi

Cindy Sheehan, the slain soldier’s mother whose attacks on President Bush made her a darling of the anti-war movement, has a new target: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Sheehan, who announced in late May that she was departing the peace movement, said she decided to run against Pelosi unless the congresswoman moves to oust President Bush in the next two weeks.

Poverty In State Of North Carolina
    Monday 9th of July 2007
    by Jay Randal

I went on a road trip to mountains of North Carolina, Friday of last week, and came upon widespread areas of poverty around the cities of Franklin and Waynesville.

I drove from Stone Mountain up Route 23 passing the picturesque Rabun Gap Nacoochee school, stopping to eat at Dillard Manor House, then crossed the Georgia border into the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina.

The scenary is spectacular as you cross the border, but then you notice the dilapidated houses hidden among the trees, which are here and there at first, and become more numerous as you drive past Franklin northward.

There are pockets of prosperity, such as Waynesville downtown business district, but upon driving Route 276 over Cold Mountain towards Hendersonville you pass severe poverty stricken area of blighted dwellings.

The poverty in North Carolina is an outrage, so GOP Gov. Michael Easley should be ashamed, and the two GOP Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr need to be replaced for doing nothing to help poor citizens.

(Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)

PS: For those who do not believe me, then drive the route I describe above and see the severe poverty in North Carolina for yourselves.

While you worry your pretty little head about homosexual butt sex, and “hippie libs”, my family donates clothing, toiletries, and other necessities to the troops. While you wish to burn all homo luvin’ sinners and hippies, I want a son/daughter to not grow up without a father/mother. While you worry and fret about your perceived heritage, I worry about our future generations.

What is self-evident with you is your smug and loathsome manner. You’re condescending and arrogant. Critical thinking would be at the very bottom of the list of your self-evident virtues.

In addition to saying absolutely nothing, this “sentence” isn’t even a complete sentence at all. Congrats, dolt. You’ve outdone yourself.

Agreed. That sentence was rather incoherent.

Here’s a Bible passage that more accurately applies to this issue, and your treatment of it:

    Psalms 26:4

I do not sit with deceitful men,
nor do I consort with hypocrites

    What are you trying to say here? Your ripping Psalms 26:4 from its context doesn’t make any sense. Let’s establish a little context here;

    1 Vindicate me, O LORD,
    for I have led a blameless life;
I have trusted in the LORD
    without wavering.

2 Test me, O LORD, and try me,
    examine my heart and my mind;

3 for your love is ever before me,
and I walk continually in your truth.

4 I do not sit with deceitful men,
    nor do I consort with hypocrites;

This is David, king of Israel speaking of himself, before the Lord. Are you suggesting by your focus on verse 4 alone that this somehow applies to me? Say it isn’t true! You can’t be trying to use the Bible against me can you? Let me see if I can follow you on this… Who are the decietful men that I supposedly sit with? and who are the hypocrites that I’m evidently consorting with? In order for verse 4 to even remotely apply to me, you would first have to establish who the deceitful men were that David was talking about, and who the hpocrites were. Then you would have to know who I sit with and who I consort with, and then you look for any parallels. Until then I must conclude that your critical thinking skills are woefully lacking, and I dismiss your use of Pslams 26:4 as a glittering jewel of collasal ignorance.

I could have posted several scriptures in response to you, but decided to let you slide.

which would have been a proper post, had it not been followed by this:
did you finally come out of the closet?

I remember a time when 20wordsorless used to post 20 words or less.
What happened? Did you get banned and have to change your posting name to a space between or and less?

Yet another post completely devoid of substance, dolt. well done.

I’m sure I might seem “smug”, “loathsome”, “condescending”, and “arrogant” to you…it’s obvious that in addition to your inability to think critically, you have several other issues concerning your self-esteem and sense of worth.

Just remember, dolt, Jesus loves you. Everyone else holds you in contempt, but at least Jesus loves you.

It’s supremely amusing that you don’t even try to correct your earlier incomplete sentence, but you seem to think that the Bible passage I quoted to you is worth twenty-six lines of refutation. Amusing also is that you seem to have completely missed my point, trying to cast yourself in the role of David instead of the role I implied – the role your behavior has assigned you to.

It’s clear that you’re not going to get it unless I draw you a map, so here it is:

You are the hypocrite, dolt. You are the deceitful man. You are the one who supports the lies that this administration and their faithful mouthpieces in the corporate media spew, and then, in an act that can only be described as rank hypocrisy, you twaddle on about the “Liberal Media”. You are the one whose posts consist entirely of lies and ad homenim attacks, and yet you have the gall to quote Jesus Christ in an attempt to support those lies and attacks.

You’re a disgusting excuse for a human, and a manifest waste of skin. You have my pity.

Wow! talk about a post with virtually no substance, and filled with ad homenim—you’ve outdone yourself. Actually, this is pretty typical of your comments. I’ts not a matter of perception my friend, you are indeed smug, loathsome, arrogant, and condescending. That would be evident to any fair-minded reader. You’re also quite good at verbal bullying, and because of it, you think you win your arguments. It is I who pities you.

So…no refutation of anything I said.

You know, dolt, if you wanted to say “I know you are, but what am I?”, you could have done so much more succiently.

Oh I see Jason M. Hendler and Daryll are back. I haven’t seen them in a long time. Back from their tours of duty in Iraq, no doubt. Hey soldiers! How’s the surge going?

Why should I bother? I refuted your use of Psalms 26:4. The verse had nothing to do with me or my views. You basically found a verse in the Bible that had the word hypocrite in it, and you tried to use it against me. Did you rescind your comment? No! You stepped up the personal attacks and continued to force your tortured interpretation onto me. I’ve explained my position many times in the past; I’m not going to spend a lot of time in trying to refute anyone here for the reason I just stated—you refuse to stand corrected. I visit this site occasionally, and most of the time I shake my head at the comments being posted, and then leave. But sometimes, I see an arguement that is so illogical that it demands a response. Before long I have people coming out of the woodwork—taking up the illogical standpoint just to attack me. Then there’s you—No doubt you recognize my handle, because as soon as I pop up—it draws your attention. Let’s get something straight, shall we? I have no misconceptions of changing anyone here, so don’t have any about changing me. There’s nothing wrong with me visiting TP occasionally, and I will do it on my terms. I don’t have to debate the issues to the same degree that you do. I just don’t want to put that much energy into a message board. It has proven to be a big waste of time. I prefer to keep things surface level—pointing out the weaknesses of arguments, and the flaws in logic. You don’t have to agree, and you don’t have to like it. STFU in Denver doesn’t like it, and he wants to meet somewhere so he can beat me up. I expect better from you. You’re a smart guy—you should use your powers for good.

but what was his first cordial, and non combative post regarding me? Well, let’s take a looksee back from this morning, shall we?

Oh yes! DRxJ is quite the savage! I hope he didn’t break a nail typing his blustering, anit-war, pro-homo rant.

Oh yeah, nothing personal or being attacked there, eh 20words?
…and what was your very first post here?

Hey STFU, the Taliban needs your help in destroying America from within. Oh wait… you’re already doing that.
    Comment by 20wordsor less — July 9, 2007 @ 9:50 am

Oh that’s right, a baseless character attack. STFU was not even addressing you, yet you “suddenly” logged on and called him/her unAmerican.

Quit your b*tch and moan whine fest about how you only post to offer an opposing view, then get “attacked” by us lefties.
You commenced with attacks, and then hid under the guise of “all you leftards do is attack”
That would make you what? Say it with me…..A hyp-o-crit!
    Very good.

Your ability to read and comprehend is somewhat lacking isn’t it. Here was my first post for today.

Lord Satan, your minion Daryll is here spreading fear, lies, and hatred. Please send this demon back down to hell.

Daryll, umm the army needs you. Grab an M16, put down your stupid bible and fight you F_CKING COWARD!

    Comment by 20wordsor less

You will note that I am using the same argumentation that STFU is, minus the gratuitous personal attacks and profanity. Same tactic but reversed direction—it shows the absurdity of things.

My comment about you was as follows—

Oh yes! DRxJ is quite the savage! I hope he didn’t break a nail typing his blustering, anit-war, pro-homo rant.

    This was in response to—

    DRxJ ~ nice whuppin on # 50…

    Comment by RUCerious

I read your nice whuppin in #50 and it was exactly that—a blustering , anti-war, pro-homo rant. My comment was in response to RUCerious for thinking that you did such a good job—you didn’t.

There’s more than one way of pointing out illogical arguments my friend, I happen to like using sarcasm and the same argumentation against the person who used it in the first place—to see if they’re sharp enough to get it. They’re usually not.

You’re also quite mistaken. I’m not whining and moaning about being attacked—I’ve been here long enough to know how things work. I expect to be harassed by you guys, and my feelings aren’t hurt in the least. It seems to me that you object to my giving a little of that back. Kinda sensitive aren’t ya?

  126. DRxJ says:

oh now it’s the “absurdity of things” argument. Kinda like the reverse reverse psychology. Or better yet, it’s the employer getting caught stealing funds, only to decry that he was doing it to show how easily it could be done.
    Again, it’s all relative bull$hit!
Had you posted, “STFU, I totally disagree with you, and here’s why….” then you would be respected, and a debate would ensue.
Instead, you came out swinging, and when you were counter attacked, you hid behind your mama’s skirt, and played victim.
To that, you get no respect (and no soup!)
But if you really wanna play hardball, please defend Rove’s quotes in the above thread
    mkay?

  127. 20wordsor less says:

Awww… poor crybaby! I’m not playing the game they way you think I should. I got news for you pal, disagreeing and still being respected does not go hand in hand here… no matter how you do it. I’ll admit that it’s kind of funny to see how you guys dish it out, but you can’t take it. What’s the matter? The comment about your broken fingernail hit too close to home?

  128. Flaco says:

2100+ days with no domestic trerrorist attack on US soil!

    Thanks President Bush!!!

For TPers it’s just another great day at the mall. Have fun shopping!

  129. Probus says:

No other president could have mismanaged this war like Bush. While republicans who are abandoning Bush’s Iraq policy may be doing so to benefit themselves politically, they realize how wrong this policy is. Thus, they must now vote with democrats to put pressure on Bush to change course.

While our soldiers are fighting and dying on the front lines we see no progress from the Maliki government that continues to make false promises while our troops die. Where is the oil law that they said they would pass? What is going on with the de-baathification progress which needs to be implemented? When do they intend to make changes to their Constitution to bring more Sunnis into the government? Instead they went on vacation.

The bombing in Amerli is proof that the surge has failed. The Libby commutation will further hurt Bush because no one is above the law and with this commutation Bush is clearly saying that Libby is.

    The TV ratings are in!

    Live Earth was a bust!

The main three-hour American TV broadcast on NBC averaged a meager 2.7 million viewers, ranking as the least-watched U.S. program on Saturday night and falling below NBC’s summer prime-time Saturday average, Nielsen Media Research reported on Monday.

The overall numbers amounted to a small fraction of the 2 billion people that Live Earth organizers had hoped to reach through TV, radio and Internet coverage of the event, spearheaded by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore
