President Bush in 2002, between the 9/11 attacks and his starting war in Iraq, knew from intelligence reports that an al Qaeda guy had settled in a small village in northern Iraq, next to the Kurds, and protected by U.S./British fighter jets patrolling 24/7 the northern Iraqi “no-fly zone.”

Did Bush A) order the bombing and flattening of this al Qaeda guy’s northern Iraqi hideout, following through on Bush’s promise to get al Qaeda wherever they might be, which, in fact, led to the earlier, post-9/11 killing of an al Qaeda operative in Yemen by a missile launched from a Predator drone aircraft (it zeroed in on the cellphone this al Qaeda guy was using), or B) did Bush and Cheney leave this al Qaeda guy alone before their March 2003 order to invade Iraq, thus letting this al Qaeda guy live, only to have him turn up later killing Iraqi citizens and members of our military over in Iraq? BUZZ. Wrong again neo-con breath. Bush and Cheney let this al Qaeda guy live so he could kill another day. Last year in 2006, he was finally killed, four years after Bush and Cheney decided not to flatten the place in northern Iraq where he was holed-up.

What to you is a “meaningful way?” The fact that they use violence to achieve their goals? The fact that they kill civilians? The fact that they kill westerners? This makes the ISI and c. 2001 al-Qa’ida no different from the IAI, Ansar al-Sunnah, the Jaish al-Mahdi, the Jaish al-Rashidin, the Jaish al-Fatihin, or the Jaish al-Amrika. The results are the same whenever any of these forces blow up civilians. Innocent people die.

The difference is in the motives of the people joining. The ISI are not going to follow us home. They’re not all going to go contract extensively drug-resistent tuberculosis and be waved across the U.S.-Canadian border with a smile. The ISI came about as a direct result of our invasion and occupation of Iraq. They are there to kill as many American troops in Iraq as possible, and the surge is just giving them more targets.

The ideology of al-Qa’ida cannot be defeated militarily. The more we engage them in Iraq, the more we prolong their presence. A majority of Americans want us out of Iraq. A majority of Iraqis want us out of Iraq. What part of democracy do you not like, exactly?

What you’ve quoted there refers to a historical study of the jihadist movement. So as I said, and you just agreed, it doesn’t relate to what was being discussed.
