Military officers endorse Webb amendment.

Yesterday on CNBC, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) attacked Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) amendment that would require troops to rest for as much or more time as they are deployed, claiming that it hurts the troops. But today the Military Officers Association of America — the largest and most influential association of military officers — sided with Webb and endorsed the bipartisan amendment. (More on the Senate’s Iraq debate in today’s Progress Report.)

  1. God says:

Why do our officers hate the troops?

  2. RUCerious says:

It’s clear that Joe Liebermann (I-Israel) would have our troops stationed in Israel while they take their week between year long tours of duty in Iraq/Afghanistan/Syria/Lebanon/Iran/…

  3. Neeko says:

Lieberman is such a lunatic. How could that possibly hurt the troops? Something is up with him. He’s turned into a Bush yes-man. Do they have some juicy blackmail on him or something?

I’m tired of hearing his opinion on military matters. I’m basically tired of hearing his goofy voice.

  4. Blackacre says:

Did Joe think about what he said? “Give our soldiers a break?” That’s what Webb’s bill does, Joementum.

  5. Dan says:

Webb pointed out yesterday on Hardball that the amendment calls for a 3-1 rest ratio (three months of rest and retraining for every one month in a combat deployment) for National Guard and Reserves, and a 1-1 ratio for active duty.

I suspect this amendment will have about 90% public approval.

Go ahead and vote against it GOP congresscritters.

  6. BobJonestheAllstar says:

And how much combat time has Fightin’ Joe Lieberman had?

  7. The Joker says:

    I agree with Webb!
However the Troops should leav Iraq so the Muslims kill each otjher!

    RUSCeriuos,
Your still upset Hitlet didn’t finish of the Jews!
    A typical Pro0Muslim post!

  8. GSD says:

Funny how Joe Lieberman went from anti-war pacifist in the 60’s(probably when he was eligible to serve) to raving, bloodthirsty, warmongering lunatic in the days of Chimpster in Charge.

Joe you are a sack of sh*t, please leave the senate pronto.

I never understood the neocon talking point of “sending the troops home hurts morale!!” My father did two tours of Vietnam in the 60’s with the Marines. The two happiest days of his life were when he came back home and saw my mother. One year in-country, one year of rest back home, that’s the way it’s always been. Of course, our leaders would know that if they actually served.

  10. SGT Higgins says:

I agree with Webb’s plan. Currently we’re at 15 mth deployments followed up by no less than 12 mth’s ‘down-time’.

Those 12 months are filled with training exercises that often have us in the field and away from home for weeks at a time. I kinda like the idea of 3 more months w/ my family before being re-deployed.

Not trying to nit-pick, but prior to the start of this war, deployments were down to 6 months bc of the stress and toll they took on the troops. Now we’re up to 15 months…..guess stress isn’t a factor anymore.

  12. DM says:

It’s so hard to remember that Al Gore and Joe Lieberman ran together on the same Presidential ticket.

It’s cool, I understand. I guess my whole point was to question why some people believe that a soldier coming home to see their family hurts their morale.

HEY! The Troops are ours! You can’t have them!

The same belief that leads people to believe that the US Govt is winning the war in Iraq. The same belief that allows Tony Snow to get up day after day and lie about the current situation. THe same belief that by putting the troops in unnecessary harms way is somehow supporting the troops. The same belief that not giving the troops the necessary rest, equipment, weapons is ok while funnelling billions of dollars to corrupt corporations.

It’s the kind of belief that hopefully you’ll never truly understand.

No hard feelings. I don’t recall my coming home being a morale-buster. And I can’t imagine 3 more months at home would seriously hamper the mission.

  18. upside00 says:

If this doesn’t pass, I have to hear the excuses the rest of teh Repugs who would vote against come up with. That will make for very entertaining comedy of the absurd! And I bet everyone that votes against it…. is a Chickenhawk, just like AWOL Dubya, 5 deferment Darth and General of the Israeli Army, Joe L.!

  19. Karim says:

When it comes to Sen. Webb, “Support the troops” is more than a motto.

Except there is a much higher chance of being exposed to the truth while home; you know, how 70% of the people support them and WANT them home. Guess that would be considered a bad thing, in the eyes of Dubya and Darth. They want to treat them like mushrooms, keep them in the dark and feed them shit!

Perhaps, but in the Active Army, there’s really not a good way out of a bad thing. Lemme explain that:

When we raise our right hand we swear to support and defend the constitution of the US: Ok, so here at TP, without question, the COTUS has been seriously over-ridden on a number of occasions.

We also swear to obey the orders of the oficers appointed over us :
there are plenty of situations where those ‘officers’ aren’t the best person for the job…by a long shot. I don’t get to choose them, but I still have an obligation to support them.

So being exposed to the truth and being able to act on the truth aren’t as compatible in the Military. We often remark that the same rights we defend aren’t afforded to us.

  22. frylock says:

Let’s send Lieberman to Iraq since he seems to like the Iraq war so much.

He can run all the pep rallies–maybe a talk show!

He is definitely in the Rummy camp of war hardening the troops for more war…. which is easy to say in the comforts of DC.

    What a Sh*thead.

  23. leporello says:

The real Joe Lieberman was spirited away to Gitmo. CIA stooges there did their magic and, Presto! Here’s George’s Joe-boy. That’s a disturbingly logical answer for a perturbingly difficult question. How else could a man who seemed so rational go so far around the bend?

  24. Zimzone says:

    LIEberman?

    It’s the lips!

Those flappy floppers have been places no man has gone before…

or would want to go again!

Most people try to get their arms around a problem.

Joe prefers using his lips. How did he get this way, you may ask?

He learned it from Jiffy Lube Gannon. He’s never been the same.

  25. kipmartin says:

im amazed there were that many morons in Connecticut to elect him. whats in the water up there?

  26. kathleen says:

Webb put on a uniform and served so did his father and grandfather. , Liebermann sends other people’s family members to an unnecesaryand illegal war based on a “pack of lies”. Who should we trust?

  27. hterrya says:

LIEberman is contradicted by military officers? Of course, because he is a cowardly chickenhawk!

Who in the military could agree with some crooked coward who doesn’t want the troops to have ample REST and RESTORATION after serving faithfully in a debacle not of their making?

  28. GOP smells funny says:

Hey, Joe, where ya goin’ with that gun in your hand?

  29. howzit says:

Sen Elmer Fudd Is an idiot Bush hand puppet.

  30. NeoCONS 'R' SCUM says:

ahhhhh, joe lieberman, ScumBag- ChickenHawk- always ready to send O.P.K (Other People’s Kids) to do Israel’s bidding.
You neeed to grow a pair, Cletus, and enlist.
    SCUMBAG NEOCON.

  31. me solo me says:

My man is in the Army ready to deploy in a few weeks. He went to Iraq for one year and spent this year here. He says he feels so sick about his life and the fact he has to go there again. He is so tired, his back hurts all the time and he has to go there again. Rest?? what rest?? They dont rest when they are here in America. They have to train in the field, clean weapons until their nails bleed and carry heavy loads while walking miles just for the hell of the training. It just sucks. Im proud of my man but Im so disapointed of the way the Army works.
