REPORT: Six Months Later, Time’s Up For Escalation Proponents

escalateSix months ago today, on January 10, 2007, the President announced his policy of escalation in Iraq. He claimed that “if we increase our support at this crucial moment, and help the Iraqis break the current cycle of violence, we can hasten the day our troops begin coming home.”

A host of administration officials and media pundits quickly embraced Bush’s call, and asked that the American public give it a chance to succeed. Building off the work that has been done by Atrios and others, ThinkProgress has compiled a list of administration officials and media pundits who promised a reassessment after giving the surge a chance. Some examples:

CONDOLEEZZA RICE: So it’s not as if there is a date, at six months we’ll know and then we have to do something dramatic. [Time Magazine, 1/12/07]

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I think we ought to give him and the president the benefit of the doubt, give them six months and see if it can be controlled. [Fox News, 1/12/07]

BILL O’REILLY: We can’t force these people to stop killing each other. They’re either going to do it or they’re not, but now they know. Now they know. They’ve got six months and that’s it. [The O'Reilly Factor, 1/24/07]

Six months later, the cycle of violence in Iraq continues. Since Bush announced the escalation, 590 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have died. Military assessments suggest that “the U.S. military’s plan to secure Baghdad against a rising insurgency is falling far short of its goal” and “no progress has been made on the political benchmarks the Iraqi government was supposed to have met already.”

Bush’s escalation has failed, and time is up for the following list of people. Read the report HERE, and let us know if there’s someone we missed.

  7. JesusChrist_GodOfWar says:

Sad to say this, but Iraqis were safer under Saddam than they are under the Toy Emperor Bush.

    Bring our troops home. NOW!

Bush has created enough of a mess to destabilize the entire middle east for the next several decades.

    Got Osama? I thought not.

ReichWingNutWhackJobs need to be thrown into jail for their treasonous slight of hand over Iraq!

  8. TripMaster Monkey says:

I’d say that it’s time for Congress to intervene and de-fund this insane war of imperialist aggression, but I’m getting tired of repeating myself.

The Democratic Congress could have stopped this nonsense long ago by simply failing to pass additional budgets for the war. That they have failed to do so makes them accomplices in this administration’s awful crimes.

  9. veritas says:

Of course, we were not stupid enough to buy into his bull$hit to begin with 6 months ago. I’ve been against this war from the outset. Things just were a bit too illogical, unseemly, and certainly flew in the face of almost every other member of NATO. It’s just a shame that, for whatever reason, those in Congress whom we trust to work for us failed to do their homework on something so critical….so important….so deadly.

Guess Russ Feingold and Dennis Kucinich did their homework though and should be rewarded with either our confidence or our vote.
Were they prophets? No. They simply were doing their job and read the fine print.

  10. Hardy Haberman says:

Time is up for the Bush administration as well. Throw them out now!

  11. veritas says:

War should ALWAYS be the “last resort” – in this case, it was the “first resort” which is why it’s failing and taking this country’s economic future down with it – along with this country’s brightest and best young people – the true patriots who believed in something and then realized that they were duped.

Squeegeboo: That’s the latest talking point they’re trying to hammer – that the full troop deployment wasn’t or isn’t there yet. Guess what though – the fact is that 23,000 have been there….3,000 more than the number he told the american people. Caught lying again? About the number deployed? About the fact that they’ve been deployed for some time? Think so.

Where I think we would differ is that you think that by occupying a country that doesn’t want you there and sit in the middle of a civil war and get shot at from everyside is idiotic. You have a notion that there is a “win’ out there for the US just around another 6 month corner.

I meant the type of death and destruction that isn’t effectively killing the enemy and securing the area. The bomb-strapping idiots are the blockage to the intents of our forces. They are insurgents.

Don’t get Muslim bomb-strappers wrong. They have everything against peace and tranquility. They are for ALL for death and destruction.

Why do you waste your time rallying against our forces? They’re surely not the problem.

  119. Troll Hater says:

So, the “surge” will be complete at the end of the year, right?

    http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/052207A.shtml

Monday 21 May 2007: US quietly doubling combat troop numbers.

This “second surge” of troops in Iraq, which is being executed by extending tours for brigades already there and by deploying more units, could boost the number of combat troops to as many as 98,000 by the end of this year. When support troops are included, the total number of U.S. troops in Iraq could increase from 162,000 now to more than 200,000 – the most ever – by the end of the year.

So we get a report in September, then wait till December, then give it another Friedman unit to work out?

Meanwhile, we can bomb Iran, try to get the Turks back to their homebases, admire Syria and Israel punching each other in the face, and lose about 50% of the surge personnel to an Iranian counterattack.

Busy program, I will stock up on beer & chips and get a new TV.

If we had a responsible Media the question would be asked of Republican politicians “Should we stay in Iraq?”. Don’t bother asking the Republican Presidential candidates because none of them are going to win anyway. What is important is to move enough of the Republicans in Congress so we can actually get out of this stupid war.

If the Media starts asking these kinds of questions and not letting the Republicans come back with non-answers, I firmly believe we can end this nightmare.

Considering the lack of political asylum we have given Iraqi translators, less than 50 have been given visas to the U.S, no wonder we can not create a standing Iraqi army who face having themselves and their families killed for working with the U.S. Now the new requirement for a refugee to obtain a visa is to work in the Iraqi army for 1 year and get a recommendation from a General all the while hoping a insurgent does not kill you or your family. Would an Iraqi choose that option or option B go to Jordan or Syria the only countries you can travel to without a visa and send your kids to the Al Queda school down the street the offers free lunch. It is a characteristic of this political culture, that in a sense, it’s always dealing with yesterday’s issues. Because Democrats are mad about going into the war, four years into it, they now want to sit around essentially having a debate about the best way to help the President lose the war. And that’s not a grown up thing to do. Once you’re in it, whatever reason you wound up getting into it for, once you’re in it, win it, because the fact of allowing the war to be lost is revealing not about Iraq, but about America. In other words, the Iraqis will cope with America pulling out, you know, in their own way. But the rest of the world will draw its own conclusions about American will and American power.

  173. ronjazz says:

noble intent is bulls**t of the most transparent kind. there is no nobility in invading a sovereign nation on a basis of lies and profits. we have killed or caused to be killed many thousands if Iraqi citizens, and unleashed the sectarian impulses that had been under control for decades. The true total cost of the war is $2.3 Trillion. We are not paying for it. It is just piled on the debt.

  186. Arthur C. says:

Again, ours is an absolutely noble intent

Everybody in the world wishes they were judged by their intentions; but everybody is judged on the consequences of their actions. There’s a hell of a difference.

When you learn that, you’ll be an adult, ya snotnosed brat.

  187. Keith G says:

Nazi Germany thought they had an absolutely noble intent.

Osama bin Laden thinks he has an absolutely noble intent.

  189. gregor says:

But Wolfowitz showed such a great financial wizardry in estimating the cost of war that he was appointed the President of a Bank!

  190. Zooey says:

    Comment by Keith G

They were very confident in their belief in that noble intent, just like CT.

    – Francis Bacon, Sr.

  191. Zooey says:

    Keith & Arthur,

Did you guys get my sarcasm in #163?

  192. Keith G says:

Yes Zooey, to a normal person it sounds like sarcasm. But to CT it evidently does not.

When a person says “Right!” after a statement, it means you disagree with it.

Cons have the twisted notion that war critics enjoy the numbers killed.

  193. Mr. President says:

Clinton thought he had an absolutely noble intent too, when he let the Rwandan genocide occur.

  194. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

The troll chided us for not being grownups and then offered this nugget: “once you’re in it, win it”

Yikes! Go back to your Saturday morning cartoons, troll.

  195. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

At least Clinton has been man enough to admit that he made a huge mistake with Rwanda.

  196. Gregor Samsa says:

Didn’t Stalin also had a noble intent?

I believe so did Pol Pot.

At least that is what they claimed.

  197. Keith G says:

    Gallup Poll out today:

62% say it was a mistake to invade Iraq

22% say Surge has made things better

71% (including 42% of Reublicans) say Remove all troops by April 1, 2008; 26% say NO

So that’s nearly 3 to 1 saying remove all troops by April 1, 2008.

Bunch of retarded surrender monkeys (sarcasm).

  198. Keith G says:

RE #200 comment by Mr. Pee,

No Republicans advocated sending US troops to Rwanda at the time. It is just a retrospective criticism of Clinton.

I do remember very strong criticism of Clinton sending troops to Haiti and Bosnia (resulting in 0 deaths), and Bush in 2000 debate saying Clinton had our military overextended and should bring troops home.

250,000 died in ex-Yugoslavia under GHWB’s inaction before Clinton sent in military.

  199. Keith G says:

    re #204,

Hey Mr. President, aren’t you going to call the 71%: “retarded surrender Islamo-Stalinist monkeys”?

  200. Lou K says:

What will it take to impeach these arrogant powermongers?… they will NEVER co-operate. Action….. been too many words.

  201. Gregor Samsa says:

The more the trolls talk about the catastrophic consequences of withdrawing from Iraq, the more this invasion echoes Vietnam:

Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other senior officials have warned that defeat in Iraq would have a catastrophic effect on U.S. credibility. Wittingly or not, they are echoing the assumption of LBJ’s “best and brightest” and Nixon’s national security team that a quick exit from Vietnam would undermine the United States’ standing abroad — turning a superpower, as Nixon put it, into “a pitiful, helpless giant.” In fact, withdrawal did no such thing.
Iraq Isn’t Like Vietnam — Except When It Is

Any attempts by this (mis)administration and its minions to liken this conflict to WWII and/or Bush to Truman are laughable. The occupation of Iraq is more like Vietnam, and Pres Bush is more like Nixon in so many ways it’s not even funny.

Thank you, Keith. I thought my sarcasm was clear, and I’m sure it was clear to CT. He just chose not to see it.

Yes, I’ve noticed how these morons like to trumpet out how we’re “celebrating” the deaths of thousands, even while we’re trying to make it stop.

    Their brains are faulty.

  203. Zooey says:

It appears that we have made the trolls retreat from this thread for now. :-D

I’ve been accepted into the Accelerated Master program, so by 2009 I will have my BA and MA in Philosophy.

After that I hope to go to the University of Texas at Austin, to study ancient Greek philosophy, I hope to get a PhD there.

Then I will write articles in Ancient Philosophy journals so that other people interested in ancient philosophy can read them and tell me that I am wrong, and vice versa.

  212. Keith G says:

re: 216 Comment by Mr. President

This is the height of hypocrisy. GHWB was Commander in Chief while 250,000 were killed in ex-Yugoslavia. Do you criticize him? Do you credit Clinton for stopping the killing? Do you remember every single Republican crying “wag the dog—you’re trying to distract us from Monica” when Clinton did stop the killing? No Republican called for sending troops to Rwanda.

You didn’t answer the question if the 71% are retarded Islamo-Stalinist monkeys.

The New York Post called the Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group “surrender monkeys” with a picture of those two as monkeys on the entire front page.

71% of Americans agree with the ISG, so it wasn’t a leap for me to assume that you would call the 71% “surrender monkeys”.

You seem to be suggesting that there is a difference between announcing an objective and implementing it.

    Comment by Keith G — July 10, 2007 @ 6:40 pm

What did Clinton sending in the military have to do with anything ? Surely when he announced it was the turning point.

  227. Richard Cowen says:

Maybe a bit OT but absolutely related:

From an article in the New York Times reporting on Bush’s speech today:

Critics of the war should give Gen. David H. Petraeus, the American commander in Iraq, “a chance to come back and tell us whether his strategy’s working, and then we can work together on a way forward,”
Sounds to me like they are once again setting up the military to be the fall guy. Since when is it “his” (Petraues) strategy? I thought Bush was the decider???

Bush and company have determined their strategy. It’s called dolchstosse.

  241. Probus says:

The poorly thought out surge has failed despite the best efforts of our troops. Our troops cannot succeed if the policy is a failure. Bush had 6 months to get it right. He has failed in this. Now he must listen to the American people and set a date to bring our troops home from a civil war we can’t win. This is not our war to fight. The Shiias and Sunnis are fighting and our troops are caught in the middle of it. American people are not prepared to let even one more American soldier die from an IED. We don’t want even one more soldier to come home from a traumatic brain injury. The war has been wrong from the beginning. The Iraq war has nothing to do with 9-11 or al Qaeda. Bush must get the policy right. He must change course and set a date to bring our troops home.

  242. daGUY says:

Where’s Tom Friedman? He’s been telling us to wait “6 months” for the past 5 years.
