Number of Americans who “believe that the U.S. troop surge in Iraq was a success.” Just 38 percent of Republicans consider the President’s strategy successful.
Wow, that means that 81% of the people in our country support al Qaeda. And that 81% of the people in our country are surrender monkeys. I’m impressed.

As always, TP is misleading.
19% said it is a success
43% it is not a success
24% say it is too early to tell.
so, 43% say that either the surge has succeeded or it is too early to tell. the same amount that say that the surge has failed. Sounds like a split right down the middle. Poor TP, run by incompented, communist propagandists. You are only fooling people with IQs less than 80.
Seems to me that this is a none story TP. But of course you report it this way because you know that your readers, the LIbtards, are too stupid to go read the Rasmussen Poll on their own. They love being fed spoon storied from TP.
I always wonder what type of people these 19%ers are. Incurable optimists or idiots?

People who work for Raytheon, Boeing, SAIC, Lockheed Martin, and the hundreds of other companies who get money from the Pentagon. That might add up to a good 10% all told…

What’s misleading? The poll says that 19% consider the surge a success. The TP headline says that 19% consider the surge a success. You’re quoting a namejack.
You would think that if somebody was going to repost the same thing to make sure the right person was addressed, they would fix their grammar to make it seem like english.

Bush has even told the press he doesn’t have to answer to them or anyone in other words the American people can just KISS HIS BUTT.

43% say that the surge has failed. It’s obvious that it has failed so far, and 43% of people are voicing the opinion that it is not possible that it succeed in the future.
24% say that it is too early to tell. These people are admitting that the sure is not a success yet (again, an observation in line with the observed conditions), but hold forth with the opinion that it could prove to be successful in the future.
19% say that the surge is already a success…a viewpoint that is wildly at odds with the observable conditions, and serves only to prove that 19% of Americans are firmly divorced from reality.

are you truly this stupid? by ONLY saying in the headline that 19% consider the surge a success, Libtards who are known to be emotional and not read the whole story will assume that everyone else believes the surge to be a failure. As the Rasmussen Poll clearly states, this is far, far from the case since only 43% consider the surge a failure, with 19% considering a success and 24% saying it is too early to tell.
clearly 43% of those polled disagree with the other 43% that say that surge is a failure.
It is well known in journalism schools that 99% of Americans only read headlines and don’t bother to dive into the story. It is also known that 99% of headlines are misleading and do not support the story below them.

Our resident troll is spinning like mad, but even he can’t spin this to look like the glowing success we were promised six months ago.
Sez the troll — “43% say that either the surge has succeeded or it is too early to tell. the same amount that say that the surge has failed. Sounds like a split right down the middle”.
The only way to get a “split right down the middle” is to assume that every one of the “too early to tells” believes it was a success. That’s a BIG stretch.
And bolstering an argument by name-calling is sheer desperation.
For the Bush administration, the marketing of the “surge” in Iraq more and more looks like an ad for a Hollywood flop. In this case, the box office numbers are in and the film is a dismal failure. And yet a small but reliable group of friendly critics continues to offer rave reviews for “Iraq: The Surge.”
so, 43% say that either the surge has succeeded or it is too early to tell. the same amount that say that the surge has failed. Sounds like a split right down the middle.

That means 81% feels the surge HASN’T succeeded (which does NOT mean it failed)
43% said it failed.
43% don’t know enough yet => which, contrary to your weak attempt at logic, does NOT mean anything except they don’t know.

Thanks for the tip! I actually got my degree in journalism, so I’m well aware of the mechanics of a news story.
The percentage of people saying “I don’t know” is really not the important part of a poll. This is why we rarely if ever see news stories about the President’s I Don’t Know rating. They usually refer to the approval rating, or sometimes the disapproval rating.
When fewer than one in five people polled approve of something, particularly a major foreign policy issue, that’s inherently newsworthy. A headline that states the key newsworthy fact contained in a news story is not a misleading headline. It’s probably the textbook definition of a good, concise, and accurate headline. So I really don’t believe you have a point, other than to make a desperate attempt to salvage a shred of dignity for your end of the political spectrum.
You might also keep in mind that this web site is a weblog or “blog,” as it is known in the vernacular. Unlike newspapers, which attempt to maintain a tradition of objective reporting that began in the 19th century when publishers realized they could double their profits by appealing to both sides of the political spectrum, “blogs” are known to have an ideological spin. Complaining that a headline on this website has a spin is like complaining that rain contains wetness.
I agree that headlines don’t tell the whole story, otherwise why bother with the story. But I don’t see anything factually wrong with TP’s headline, and this is a progressive blog, after all. It’s not like we’re trying to be absolutely neutral here, even though reality actually works in our favor.
Nice try, but no, PiP, that’s not “the bottom line”.
The “bottom line” is that 43% of those polled believe the surge to be a failure, while 19% believe it is already a success. Only 24% of those polled replied with “it’s too soon to tell”…hardly a “bottom line”.
It means that 81% did not say that the surge succeeded.
There is a big difference.

19%.
I mean, there are 57% who don’t specifically say that the surge is a failure, but 39% of those polled don’t know or don’t have an opinion yet, so they’re not really relevant except as potential responses.
Lumping together the 19% who think the surge is already a success and the 24% who think it is too early to tell, to manufacture a 43% number to oppose the 43% that think the surge is a failure, is intellectually dishonest. I think you may be too hard on conservatard in claiming that it is “intellectually dishonest.”
It may just be too stupid to really know what the hell it is talking about.
On the basis of the evidence, it’s pretty much a tossup, but I’m leaning toward “too stupid”.
It’s not a surprise that the trolls show such dexterity at combining otherwise unrelated numbers to try to make them say something less embarrassing to their cause. They’ve had A LOT of practice at it the last few years. Facts (including poll numbers, numbers of dead servicemen, amount of money spent in Iraq, amount of money LOST in Iraq, size of deficit…) haven’t been very kind to them recently.
Would be laughable if it weren’t so pathetic that you slugs STILL indulge the brainless, childish and repugnant among you who continue to disrupt and or derail blog topics.
DON’T make me go and get all your inane BS deleted AGAIN.
Ok, so now we’re comparing anti-polls. This is fun! The percentage of people who did not say the surge is a success is 81%. The percentage of people who did not say the surge is a failure is 57%.
So we still have an overwhelming majority of people who didn’t say the surge is a success when compared to the people who didn’t not say the surge is a success. There is a smaller but still decisive majority of people who didn’t say the surge is a failure when compared to those who didn’t not say it. But when you finish playing with all the numbers, the fact remains that one in five respondents didn’t not disagree with the converse of the statement that the surge is a success.
Now, what percentage of people don’t fall into the 43% that say the the surge is a failure?
47% (counting the ones who didn’t reply…you might as well count them too…it’s just as valid as lumping the other two categories together).
Here’s a couple of questions for you, Consie:
What percentage of people don’t fall into the 19% that say the the surge is a success?
What percentage of people don’t fall into the 43% that say the the outcome of the surge is too soon to tell?
Show your work, please.
(See, Consie…I can make up meaningless conclusions from polls, too. ^_^ )

poor dishonest fool, so desperate to see America fail in Iraq that you will make up anything.
Libtard,
I gave you a chance, but you failed to recongnize it or take advantage of it.
but here unlike you I’ll be honest….
67% don’t fall into the 19% that believe the surge is a success.
but this 67% is misleading since once would assume that all 67% think that the surge is a failure and by the poll number shown we all know that this is not true. Of the 67% that are not with the 19%, 43% think is a failure and 24% think it is too soon too tell. Thus, 19% plus the 24% don’t agree with the 43% that today believe that the surge is a failure. Thus, 43% disagree with the 43% that claim that today the surge is a failure.
c’mon my man, one more chance, take it, show me how smart you are. C’mon prove me wrong and show me how you are not a Libtard.

Wrong. “I don’t know” is not the same as “I disagree.” The fundamental premise of your entire argument is flamboyantly wrong.
Also, your math is wrong. Of the 81% who are not with the 19%, 53% think it is a failure. 43 is 53% of 81. That leaves 47% of the remaining 81% who don’t know.
On the other side, 33% of the remaining 57% of respondents who did not say the surge is a failure say that it’s a success. The remainng 67% don’t know.

There is actually quite a bit of data on this. 20 to 25% of the population are what psychiatrists call “authoritarian personalities,” people who basically worship power, follow orders without question and need a strong leader to tell them what to do. Authoritarian personalities have a psychological need to believe that their leader is right and good. Cult members, for example are often authoritarian personalities. Every age has its share. During the Revolutionary war they were royalists and torries, people who feared democracy and needed a strong “daddy figure” in the form of the King. Luckily for most of us, the number of authoritarian personalities has been declining over time, but in times of fear and despair, their numbers rise. What I’m saying here is that reasonable people are dealing with a smaller percentage of the population which has a mental disorder. But, I think most progressives know that intuitively.

Oh, Jeebus Effing Cripes! Do we have to go through this EVERY TIME there’s some kind of poll result reported here?
Michael, as has been pointed out numerous times in the past, the number you describe as an “approval” rating is in fact the number of people who said that they had “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in Congress in a Gallup poll of a couple weeks ago. That same week, Gallup said that Congress had an “approval” rating of 24%.
So please, if you’re going to try to distract by going off-topic, at least do it with accurate statistics. It won’t make your point any more relevant or useful, but at least you won’t look like such a dumba$s.
At least Conservatard mangles actual statistics to try to prove HIS non-existent point.

Then you need to add in the 15% who responded with a “not sure.” “Not sure” is also a response. The total now is 82% who, by your logic, do not agree with the premise that the surge is a success. I’ll chalk the extra 1% up to a rounding error.

Nanlichi, sometimes there’s nothing that hits the target better than a well-chosen visual.
Michael, as has been pointed out numerous times in the past, the number you describe as an “approval†rating is in fact the number of people who said that they had “a great deal†or “quite a lot†of confidence in Congress in a Gallup poll of a couple weeks ago. That same week, Gallup said that Congress had an “approval†rating of 24%.
Comment by spit take
Like I said, trolls keep repeating non-points long after they’ve been refuted and you’re definitely wasting your breath on this one.
For the record (heh), Congress’ number are always bad, so this is a fairly meaningless rating even if the troll could get it right. Americans consistently like their own representative (if they voted for him/her) and consider Congress in general to be a pack of fools. The troll is somehow trying to compare this more-or-less constant number (which it gets wrong) with an approval rating that does actually change (the President’s).
why would you count the non-respondants. You are assuming that the non-respondents would have gone one side or another. You can’t assume this, you can only go by the number, percentage of people that responded.
67% is the number of people that do not agree with the 19% that claim the surge is a success.
satisfied, math “teacherâ€. Now do point how my 67% is wrong. Obviously, I am not counting people that didn’t respond to the poll.
Comment by Conservatron — July 11, 2007 @ 4:46 pm
Then you need to add in the 15% who responded with a “not sure.†“Not sure†is also a response. The total now is 82% who, by your logic, do not agree with the premise that the surge is a success. I’ll chalk the extra 1% up to a rounding error.
So what was your point again?
Comment by toasterhead — July 11, 2007 @ 4:57 pm
but, but if we use these 15% that said not sure then we can say……
that 58% of respondents do not agree with the 43% that today claim that the surge is a failure, right?
why would you count the non-respondants. You are assuming that the non-respondents would have gone one side or another. You can’t assume this, you can only go by the number, percentage of people that responded.
There were no non-respondants.

hey talk to Tripyboy, he’s the one that claimed that there were non-respondents.
Do we have to go through this EVERY TIME there’s some kind of poll result reported here?
Yes, spit take. Yes, we do.
The mouth-breathers have an increasingly shrinking pool of talking points to work with, as reality continues to encroach upon their land of make-believe. They’re going to ride the Congressional approval rating as long as they can, seemingly too stupid to realize that it’s an indictment on Congress for failing to stop the criminal junta that is the Chimpy administration, and is therefore an indirect indictment on the administration itself.
It should be heartbreakingly sad, but I cant’help but laugh.
why would you count the non-respondants. You are assuming that the non-respondents would have gone one side or another. You can’t assume this, you can only go by the number, percentage of people that responded.
You really aren’t very good at this, are you?
You’re the one trying to lump multiple groups together in a pathetic attempt to misrepresent the results. No one else. YOU. Given that you’re making up an ad-hoc group who doesn’t believe that the surge is a failure, I suggested that you add the non-respondents as well, since they obviously fall into that category.
In short, I suggested you use the non-respondents to point up the silliness of your machinations. Predictably, you were too thick to understand this.

Oh well…I’ll bet math isn’t all that important when you’re rolling up the taquitos at Taco Bell, either. (Hint: this is probably why the manager won’t put you on register. Either that, or he just doesn’t trust your weasely ass.)
Regarding this 14% number that trolls love to cite, the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll asks respondents whether they will vote for the Democratic or Republican candidate for congress in the next election. 53% say Democrat and 41% say Republican. In addition, there are 21 Repub senators up for reelect and only 9 Democrats. That’s why The Hill and Congressional quarterly has predicted the strong possibility that Democrats will gain supermajorities in both houses in the 2008 election.
I like Ret. Col. Jack Ripper’s discussion of the authoritarian figure psychosis back in #87.
I think that pretty much explains the 20%ers. And it dovetails with the observation that the 20%ers are the die-hard born agains. Another example of the weak crying for an authority to protect them.

2) Interesting to see that you make fun of blue collar jobs. Nice to see how much Libtards care about the little people. Don’t worry, it is well known that Libtard are elites pigs who believe certain jobs are beneath them. Libtards never fail to discriminate, funny enough they always claims that it is the other side that discriminates. You never did say what you have against blue collar jobs.
3) I am sorry to upset you by calling you out on your wet dream, pimple face teenage boy. Please don’t redirect your self-loathing towards those that are obviously smarter than you. This is typical of a teenage boy.
4) I love your rants and raves, please keep on posting for my amusement.
Most people, when they read a reasonably well-composed sentence that says what it intends to say, probably think about the topic of the sentence and the point of view of the speaker/author.
Trolls tend to only see their own inadequacies and thus project “delusions of granduer” onto simple, straightforward use of the English language.
If they’re particularly said and/or inadequate trolls, (see #104) they might throw in a sexual reference or two, as well. This, of course, only serves to bring focus more tightly on said inadequacies.
And, in addition to the great outlook for supermajorities in both houses of congress, the latest CBS Opinion poll asked respondents which party’s candidate they would vote for in 2008. 58% said they would definitely vote for the Democrat and 28% said Repub.
So, again, we’re looking at a strong Democratic congress and a democratic president after the 2008 election. Only in this way can we reverse the damage neocons have done to our system and society quickly. Add a couple of Sup. Court nominees and we’ll swing back to a 5-4 or even 6-3 liberal majority on the court.
The trolls will be hysterical. The screaming and whining will be heard from deep space.

July 11th, 2007 at 4:05 pmI agree that headlines don’t tell the whole story, otherwise why bother with the story. I mean, there are 57% who don’t specifically say that the surge is a failure, but 39% of those polled don’t know or don’t have an opinion yet, so they’re not really relevant except as potential responses.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:20 pmLumping together the 19% who think the surge is already a success and the 24% who think it is too early to tell, to manufacture a 43% number to oppose the 43% that think the surge is a failure, is intellectually dishonest.
But when you finish playing with all the numbers, the fact remains that one in five respondents didn’t not disagree with the converse of the statement that the surge is a success.

but here unlike you I’ll be honest….

It is quite fun to see how some people will argue against the fundamental rules of basic arithmetic. But I guess they think math has a liberal bias.

It should be heartbreakingly sad, but I cant’help but laugh.

dude, I understand that teenage boys like you need wet dreams, but this is ridiculous.

Oh well…I’ll bet math isn’t all that important when you’re rolling up the taquitos at Taco Bell, either. (Hint: this is probably why the manager won’t put you on register. Either that, or he just doesn’t trust your weasely ass.)
July 11th, 2007 at 5:14 pmRegarding this 14% number that trolls love to cite, the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll asks respondents whether they will vote for the Democratic or Republican candidate for congress in the next election. 53% say Democrat and 41% say Republican. In addition, there are 21 Repub senators up for reelect and only 9 Democrats. That’s why The Hill and Congressional quarterly has predicted the strong possibility that Democrats will gain supermajorities in both houses in the 2008 election.
July 11th, 2007 at 5:18 pmThanks spit take.
I like Ret. Col. Jack Ripper’s discussion of the authoritarian figure psychosis back in #87.
I think that pretty much explains the 20%ers. And it dovetails with the observation that the 20%ers are the die-hard born agains. Another example of the weak crying for an authority to protect them.

1) I think the one that can’t compete in math is you. Already gave you a first grade lesson in math and percentages and you couldn’t grasp it.
July 11th, 2007 at 5:21 pmMost people, when they read a reasonably well-composed sentence that says what it intends to say, probably think about the topic of the sentence and the point of view of the speaker/author.
Very revealing, all in all.
July 11th, 2007 at 5:23 pmExactly, nanlichi!

Aaand we’re down to personal attacks. The last resort of one who has been soundly defeated in Internet battle. Conservatron, it is time for you to concede, though I do not expect you to do so graciously. You did prove a tenacious if logically-challenged foe, and as a fan of surrealism I applaud your efforts to challenge basic math with obfuscation and non sequitir.
I consider this a small victory for the forces of reason, but a decisive one. We have taken back one thread, and we have taken back arithmetic. Soon we shall reclaim logic, then science, then … who knows?
July 11th, 2007 at 5:25 pmActually, I’m wrong about the court. The only justices likely to be replaced are in the liberal minority already, so we’ll still have the 5 conservative catholics who answer to the pope to contend with. Sorry about that.

There’s more to your post, but it doesn’t merit a reply (not that any of your previous ones did, but you were amusing….for a while. Now you’ve become tiresome, though).
I have to head on home now, but I’m sure there are several other TPers who will pick up the slack and keep you aware of just how wrong you are, in how many ways. Later.

Soundly defeated…..if it helps you sleep at night to believe this son.
I know I am right, you know I am right….
Once again, only 43% consider the surge is a failure compared to the 58% that were either not sure, 15%, think it is too soon to tell, 24%, or believe the surge is a success, 19%.
and if your standard of winning is that someone else insults you, kid I have won 99% of the debates on TP and the rest of the lunatic left wing blogs.
No my friend, it is time for you and Tripyboy to concede defeat. Be the man you refuse to be, show leadership and show how a Libtard can be a true man and admit defeat with grace. Just bow out and admit that you have been defeated by an intellectually superior being. Me, Conservatron.
I know Libtards have a hard time accepting defeat, look at Al Gore, I know he was a bad example for you, my Libtard….but here, now, on this blog you can show that Libtards are not whiny, cry baby losers, but real man that know how to lose.
Prove me wrong, show me that you aren’t a Libtard and a whiny, cry baby Liberal, sore loser.

Another Libtard runs away with his tail between his legs. Thanks for the excuses for why you are leaving, but and I both know that you have been soundly defeated.
Just admit it, “TripMaster Monkey, is not man enough to admit defeat. Poor dishonest, rant and raving, conspiracy theoriest lunatic.”
You never told me, should I pity you or cry for you? let me know which ok?
July 11th, 2007 at 5:40 pmI suppose we should let Conservatard think he’s won; it can be quite traumatic for the deluded to come face-to-face with their delusions, and conservatard strikes me as the violent type who will break dishes and windows if it ever glimpses the truth about itself.

July 11th, 2007 at 5:59 pmShort version of the trolls’ rantings:
No fair! Math has a liberal bias!
Using conservative arithmetic, Pres Bush has well over 50% approval rating!

July 11th, 2007 at 6:18 pmREtard is his own biggest fan because his infantile sense of humor is so tickled by his fusion of two word parts. He’s spent the whole day typing 43%, 58% and Libtard. What a ReCon Hacktron. Hackity hack hack, hacksteriffic REtard.
