Fox Military Analyst: Chertoff’s ‘Gut Feeling’ Is More About ‘Politics Than Terrorism’

Yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said that the nation is “entering a period this summer of increased risk.” When asked for how he knows this information, he said his remarks were based on his “gut feeling.”

Today, Fox News military analyst Col. David Hunt swiftly attacked Chertoff’s remarks, stating, “I understand he’s got feelings. The problem is, the states and cities, who have to react to the Department of Homeland Security guidance, can’t do squat on his feelings. … It seems more politics, John, than terrorism.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/07/huntfoxchertoff.320.240.flv]

Chertoff’s comments have been widely criticized by both the right and left. Today, Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson wrote to Chertoff and asked him to clarify his comments. “Words have power, Mr. Secretary. You must choose them wisely–especially when they relate to the lives and security of the American public. … What cities should be asking their law enforcement to work double shifts because of your ‘gut feeling?’”

Hunt is not a frequent critic of the Bush administration. Quite the opposite. He has repeatedly tried to link Saddam Hussein to terrorism and in 2003, attacked the media for not portraying a sufficiently positive picture of the fighting in Iraq. Also that year, he mocked Gen. Wesley Clark’s comment that the troops didn’t have enough armored vehicles: “Excuse me. There aren’t enough armored vehicles? Wah, wah, wah.”

Transcript:

HOST: For more on Secretary Chertoff’s unusual comments and how serious the threat is, let’s turn to Fox News military analyst Col. David Hunt.

Col. Hunt, we have spent billions of dollars trying to beef up homeland security in this country, and here is the Homeland Security Secretary relying on “gut feelings”?

HUNT: Yeah, here’s an idea John. I’d make Catherine Herridge the head of homeland security, because that analysis she just gave us is what I would have expected out of Chertoff and the DHS. I think DHS is billions of dollars overspent, terribly wasted amount of money. I understand he’s got feelings. The problem is, the states and cities, who have to react to the Department of Homeland Security guidance, can’t do squat on his feelings. We spent billions of dollars not to hear Michael Chertoff’s feelings, but to protect this country from terrorism, and what he did is take a step backwards. Very disappointing he said that, and again, the state and local people can’t do anything with what he told us. It seems more politics, John, than terrorism.

of course it is….that’s what politicians do – play politics!!

I don’t know what his goal is – probably to strike some fear into his subjects? But what I do know is quite clear – terrorists don’t attack the US because they “hate our freedoms” They attack in response to over 5 decades of American aggression, militarism and war.

This is not how to deal with terrorists – we can do something completely different; something that will make us much safer.

Excuse me… did this clueless, idiotic schmuck really say this when American soldiers were getting maimed and crippled over this issue?

  6. Jackie says:

It was gas not in the gut. Chertoff took some gas pills and he was ok. Let’s hope none of his future medical problems get confused with an attack. Look Americans have to understand Bush has appointed idiots to top jobs and most are clue less so these things have to be expected. Connie Rice the Secretary of State is to busy to take care of the foreign affairs she’s promoting Golf. I know Powell is laughing but that’s the best she can do as no one wants to talk to her. The GOP are all getting massages and sex treatment while telling Americans that their the only elected officials with Religious morals and family values. How low can the United States go before we hit rock bottom.

  10. Furious says:

With the Bush Doctrine of no safe havens, preemptive war and democracy in tatters, the President remains focused on staying the course in Iraq at all costs. In Washington, House Minority Leader John Boehner calls Senate GOP rebels on Iraq “wimps” and Tony Snow slanders the press corps as “defeatist.” Meanwhile, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff announces his “gut feeling” about the increased threat of terror attacks within the United States.

Meanwhile, the resurgence of Al Qaeda on their watch continues unabated…

That is the problem. WTF is a politician doing heading up the Department of Homeland Security. I may be a crazy moonbat liberal, but I know that post should have somebody form the military or police leading it. It is about security, not politics.

Or are you saying that the Department of homeland security is just a political office created by the smaller government republicans.

First – it’s not actually “ours,” unless Iraq becomes annexed as the 51st State.

Second- why would we sell it to Saudi Arabia only to have them sell it back to us? This kind of economic logic can only come from a loyal Bushie.

Do you own a large oil corp or something? Americans are not getting rich under Bush. Average wages have actually decreased the past six years after adjusting for inflation. First time that has happen since the Great Depression caused by twelve years of Republican rule.

In 1992 I was paying $0.95 per gallon. In 2000 I was paying $0.95 per gallon. What was it like going from 2001 to today?

Barrel of oil under Clinton $18. Barrel of oil today $70. The five biggest oil companies are loving it because it shot up the value of their reserves to $2.3 TRILLION

At least half of you creeps entertain the fantasy that the Bush Administration was somehow involved in 9/11 and yet you never seem to argue amongst yourselves over these issues. It seems that hatred of Republicans, especially George W Bush, is all that binds you.

What were terrorist attacks on the US like under the Clinton administration?

According to the sixteen intelligence agencies of the USA, what we are doing in Iraq is increasing terrorism. Do Ringo and Pip know more than the sixteen intelligence agencies of the USA?

And it is costing us $2.3 Trillion. Not paid for, just piled on the debt. Is that wise?

My father was in the military and so was his father.

    What’s your point?

  125. Elliott says:

#126 – Iran is not Grenada. With a volunteer military, who’s gonna volunteer for this sh+t tour after the misguided revenge fantasy in Iraq? Did Ahmadinejad try and kill Bush’s daddy too?

    Comment by PiP

This is kind of a clueless post. If Saddam posted such a threat, why did the US military go thru his “army” like toilet paper? It took, what 2 weeks? As soon as the insurgents are dead?

The use of the word “insurgents” sounds tidy and neat – oh, we’ll just kill them all… but seeing as it’s a full-fledged civil war, it could go on for yrs. Oops, that’s right, it already has gone on for yrs. What are you going to do, kill the whole country? Seeing as we’ve already killed close to a million of them, maybe that’s the master plan, huh?

And “no one will try to stop us”? Except maybe the Iranians… and most of the Middle East. true, they won’t be able to stop the “Shock and Awe Machine”, more of the insanity we have in Iraq, or w/ the Palestinians?

Do you ever think before you post something THAT F-ing stupid?

The only one that you are wrong about is Stalinism. Now they’ll try to tell you that Stalin was really a rightwinger – a conservative you see – and that Communism or some other “alternative economic structure” will work just fine today..It was only because of that “rightwinger”, Joseph Stalin, that Communism failed.

Indeed, because I already know the information.

  148. John Hopkins says:

Those on the far right always believe that US government always act in the best interest of the people. If one were to look into history especially on Vietnam war, the incident on Gulf of Tonkin is reminder on the lies fed to the public. The US government reported that its warship was attacked by Vietnamese torpedo boat that prompted President Johnson to order an escalation on the war. What we know of today is that there was no attack on that day in the Gulf of Tonkin. It was based on lies.

The war on Iraq was also based on the same lies. It was originally sold baesd on the WMD that proved to be non-existent. As the WMD wasn’t found, a few more reasons were offered including Al-Qaeda and democracy. I cannot understand how the shifting reasons for the war can be swallowed by the Americans.

As 911 is the excuse given by the Bush administration for any bad policies or adventures abroad, why should we take the event of 911 for granted. The Gulf of Tonkin, the Reichstag Fire, Gleiwitz incident are all examples of the staged attacks to start a war. Bush Administration start off with little legitimacy and 911 was a ‘good’ disaster for them. Without 911, the Bush will not able to invade Iraq, spy on Americans, etc.

With the low public opinions, issues on the firing of prosecutors, Iraq War, many others, it is not surprising that another 911 will be a welcome event for Bush & his cabals. So it is not surprising if Chertoff is letting people know that his gut feeling was correct ( because he knows that another 911 was already in the planning and waiting for execution)

  149. No-one in particular says:

Those on the far right always believe that US government always act in the best interest of the people.

Well, they do. The examples you mention only reinforce my belief in that. Sometimes the public needs to be lied to in order to get them accept something that just has to be done.

  150. Jericho says:

Well, 9/11 itself seems to have been more about politics than about real terrorism too. And the war in Iraq was definately more about politics than about terrorism. Do you see a pattern here?

  151. We Are STILL Americans says:

bush is not going to leave office, there is going to be an “event” in which he names himself supreme ruler , declares marshal law, suspends elections, north america will be one country by 2010, why is no one talking about this????

  154. green says:

Good Morning! The trolls Pip and Ringo are not worth responding to — they make no sense and are here to bully others. The war (now occupation) in Iraq was based on lies and was therefore doomed to fail before it ever started. Our soldiers are training people who are in league with those they are fighting against – does that make sense?

Chertoff’s “gut feeling” is likely based on inside information not based on intelligence gathering but rather from the scared criminal WH regime. I agree, another event is likely being that these criminals are getting more and more backed into their corners. My “gut feeling” indicates another attack in August or September likely on the west coast because we are so blue. Then martial law will be enacted and our access to information more limited. Who will be blamed? It’s anyone’s guess — but I’m banking on Iran.

Take care all true patriots — our country needs us.

  156. Mark Eichenlaub says:

I understand that this goes against the conventional wisdom but Saddam Hussein had long engaged in supporting terrorism and terrorists were ALL over the Middle East, including Iraq.

This latest fear about a pending attack may or may not be more serious than past threats. Let’s hope it’s nothing though.

  157. green says:

And to #159 – I say Bushsh*t. It’s bologna, and you know it. These criminals have an agenda – and you and I and this once great nation are not in their interests. It’s the f’ing almighty dollar and power – and the people stand by and sadly watch. Perhaps we deserve what we are getting, perhaps………..Wait and see, are you ready to really fight? No, you are probably more interested in the lastest celebrity gossip or something else………..Out country is dying and the people don’t care. My great grandparents and grandparents….who built this country……..are rolling and We the People are numbed. Goddess forgive us.
