Snow Lashes Out At White House Press Corps, Calls Them ‘Defeatists’
During today’s White House press conference, Press Secretary Tony Snow again tried to deny the fact that prominent conservative members of Congress are increasingly abandoning the President’s failing policies in Iraq. Sen. Dick Lugar’s sharp critiques of the President’s Iraq policies were merely pleas for “some bipartisan comity,” Snow said.
One reporter asked Snow if delusional characterizations of conservative defections would cause the American people to “perceive you and the White House as isolated and out of touch on this?” Snow responded, “No, no more than I think that they look at you and think that you guys are focused on defeat.” The press room erupted in groans.
“Wait a minute. That’s not my question,” the reporter shot back. Snow lashed out in his defense, “You just asked me if I’m clueless and I asked if you were defeatist.”

The fact is that conservatives in Congress and the American people are abandoning the President’s Iraq strategy in record numbers. Just 19% of Americans see the surge as a success and in the Senate today seven Republican senators defied their leadership and voted in support of a measure that would have limited the number of troops available for deployment in Iraq.
Transcript:
QUESTION: Are you at all worried that, as, sort of, these basic questions are answered and the answer that comes back is not exactly — and it’s not black or white; it’s gray, and all — are you worried that the American people listen to this sort of debate and perceive you and the White House as isolated and out of touch on this?
SNOW: No, no more than I think that they look at you and think that you guys are focused on defeat.
QUESTION: Wait a minute. That’s not my question.

SNOW: Well, you just asked me if I’m clueless and I asked if you were defeatist.
QUESTION: Wait a second. Hang on. You have Republicans, Voinovich, Lugar, Domenici, people who are involved in shaping a new course for the mission, and they are leaving the president.
Every time this gets asked about, you tell us, no, that’s not what’s happening. When people listen to this back and forth, do you think the inference many Americans draw is the White House is the last place to get the fact that the Republican Party is leaving them?
SNOW: No. I think the White House is the last part trying to say public opinion polls are not what the war is made of.

He is in an unenviable position having to make excuses for an administration that has lost all credibility. And he reacts by insulting the press corps that has been mostly supportive of the White House.

Anyone who opposes the killing in Iraq is a defeatist. Or was that “with the terrorists?” No, I think we’re all part of the “blame america first crowd.” No, that was last month….isn’t it “cut and runners?”
Who knows…they come up with another negative term for anyone in opposition to this war every few weeks or so, it seems.
But, the reality is much different. It’s people like Snow and his bosses that are acting with complete hatred for this country and all it’s supposed to stand for.
They’re willing to throw away everything to quench their thirst for power, profits and war.

We should (and so should the Brits, Russians and French) thank God that public opinion didn’t call the day on war strategy 60 years ago. American public opinion should not dictate war objectives, strategy and tactics, so your “only 19% support the surge” plug is just not relevant.
And besides this, if Americans are patently against the war and George Bush, don’t you think they should have exercised some responsibilty and thought twice about re-electing him and his Halliburton chronies back into office?

It occurs because as the chemo’s killing the cancer, its also killing brain cells. I’d guess that this is what’s happening to Mr. Snow. That and the fact that he’s signed on to this particular train wreck can’t be doing him any good whatsoever. Add the final fact that the White House press corps is no longer the bunch of simpering simpletons they once were and Tony gets a little testy. Chemo induced madness plus self inflicted career suicide plus reporters asking real questions and expecting serious answers and you have some really, really bad days for Tony. As to the war, I quote the Green Beret motto:

If the voting public had been given the chance to make an informed opinion about the matter, they would have thrown all their asses out on the street. But the Bush administration has done, and continues to do, everything it can to keep the public from learning the truth. If the public knew then how much they have lied on virtually every subject, they would never have given them as many votes as they had, and Ohio wouldn’t have mattered one way or the other.

Rather the American people are focused now on getting our soldiers out of Iraq. Bush is only focused on protecting his poor legacy. We don’t want more Americans to die in a war they can’t win. This civil war is between the Shiias and the Sunnis. We can’t fight it for them. Bush’s policies in Iraq are taking us toward certain defeat.
