During today’s White House press conference, Press Secretary Tony Snow again tried to deny the fact that prominent conservative members of Congress are increasingly abandoning the President’s failing policies in Iraq. Sen. Dick Lugar’s sharp critiques of the President’s Iraq policies were merely pleas for “some bipartisan comity,” Snow said.
One reporter asked Snow if delusional characterizations of conservative defections would cause the American people to “perceive you and the White House as isolated and out of touch on this?” Snow responded, “No, no more than I think that they look at you and think that you guys are focused on defeat.” The press room erupted in groans.
“Wait a minute. That’s not my question,” the reporter shot back. Snow lashed out in his defense, “You just asked me if I’m clueless and I asked if you were defeatist.”
Watch it:
The fact is that conservatives in Congress and the American people are abandoning the President’s Iraq strategy in record numbers. Just 19% of Americans see the surge as a success and in the Senate today seven Republican senators defied their leadership and voted in support of a measure that would have limited the number of troops available for deployment in Iraq.
Transcript:
QUESTION: Are you at all worried that, as, sort of, these basic questions are answered and the answer that comes back is not exactly — and it’s not black or white; it’s gray, and all — are you worried that the American people listen to this sort of debate and perceive you and the White House as isolated and out of touch on this?
SNOW: No, no more than I think that they look at you and think that you guys are focused on defeat.
QUESTION: Wait a minute. That’s not my question.
(LAUGHTER)
SNOW: Well, you just asked me if I’m clueless and I asked if you were defeatist.
QUESTION: Wait a second. Hang on. You have Republicans, Voinovich, Lugar, Domenici, people who are involved in shaping a new course for the mission, and they are leaving the president.
Every time this gets asked about, you tell us, no, that’s not what’s happening. When people listen to this back and forth, do you think the inference many Americans draw is the White House is the last place to get the fact that the Republican Party is leaving them?
SNOW: No. I think the White House is the last part trying to say public opinion polls are not what the war is made of.
Tony Snow is beginning to sound like Baghdad Bob.
July 11th, 2007 at 6:11 pmAs if anything this lying prick says matters. Please! He’s a total joke and few people do much but laugh or roll their eyes at him and the lies that spill out of his mouth.
If it wasn’t so sick it would be laughable.
How can you tell if Snow is lying? His mouth is moving. What a sack of $hit he is!
July 11th, 2007 at 6:14 pmI heard thison the radio earlier…..he really didn’t come off too well.
SNOW: No, no more than I think that they look at you and think that you guys are focused on defeat.
QUESTION: Wait a minute. That’s not my question.
(LAUGHTER)
SNOW: Well, you just asked me if I’m clueless and I asked if you were defeatist.
I didn’t hear so much laughter as alarm. The press in the room certainly seemed to be taken aback by his comments.
July 11th, 2007 at 6:14 pmWell, it’s understandable that Tony gets frustrated when the press just won’t accept his answers.
July 11th, 2007 at 6:15 pmThey are defeatists, he’s right.

July 11th, 2007 at 6:18 pmTony Faux knows he’s gone in Jan 09, or maybe sooner.
July 11th, 2007 at 6:18 pmThe Repugnicant Senators are hoping they aren’t gone after Jan 09.
Huge difference.
They’re defecting en masse to save their own political hides. Tony knows that, he’s just trying to be cute. And it’s not pretty.
Would Tony Snow look into an audience of Senators Spector, Voinovich, Warner, Lugar, Domenici, and Snowe, and call all of them defeatists?
He is in an unenviable position having to make excuses for an administration that has lost all credibility. And he reacts by insulting the press corps that has been mostly supportive of the White House.
See: News Corpse for more on the passing of the 4th estate.
July 11th, 2007 at 6:18 pmyup – that’s right, Tony.
Anyone who opposes the killing in Iraq is a defeatist. Or was that “with the terrorists?” No, I think we’re all part of the “blame america first crowd.” No, that was last month….isn’t it “cut and runners?”
Who knows…they come up with another negative term for anyone in opposition to this war every few weeks or so, it seems.
But, the reality is much different. It’s people like Snow and his bosses that are acting with complete hatred for this country and all it’s supposed to stand for.
They’re willing to throw away everything to quench their thirst for power, profits and war.

July 11th, 2007 at 6:20 pmSnow is not looking good; between his cancer and his lies, he is being eaten away from the inside out. He should retire from public life and go home to spend time with his family – maybe they love him. The people I know can’t stand him.
July 11th, 2007 at 6:21 pmI was just thinking: how many Republican screw-ups will we finally uncover? How many more will we never know about? It surpasses imagination.

July 11th, 2007 at 6:25 pmNow, now the troll does have a point: the press rolled over for all the lies and bullcrap for so many years, it may be hard for Snowjob to adjust to a reality he hasn’t created.

July 11th, 2007 at 6:51 pmLet’s get something straight Think Progress editors, go back and research whether the majority of Americans were all gung-ho about WWII or Korea. They were not. We should (and so should the Brits, Russians and French) thank God that public opinion didn’t call the day on war strategy 60 years ago. American public opinion should not dictate war objectives, strategy and tactics, so your “only 19% support the surge” plug is just not relevant.
And besides this, if Americans are patently against the war and George Bush, don’t you think they should have exercised some responsibilty and thought twice about re-electing him and his Halliburton chronies back into office?
IYes, Tony Snow and GWBush is out of touch with the American people.

July 11th, 2007 at 7:10 pmI know, for a fact, that women who receive chemo for breast cancer frequently get what’s called chemo brain. It occurs because as the chemo’s killing the cancer, its also killing brain cells. I’d guess that this is what’s happening to Mr. Snow. That and the fact that he’s signed on to this particular train wreck can’t be doing him any good whatsoever. Add the final fact that the White House press corps is no longer the bunch of simpering simpletons they once were and Tony gets a little testy. Chemo induced madness plus self inflicted career suicide plus reporters asking real questions and expecting serious answers and you have some really, really bad days for Tony. As to the war, I quote the Green Beret motto:

If the Commander-in-Chief orders every one of his military personnel to kill themselves in one giant surge in an attempt to win, even if the evidence is overwhelming that this would not work, is it “defeatist” to point this out? No, it is not. It is rational and sane. This White House is neither.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:12 pmMaster Satan LOVES Tony Snow, the Bushes, Cheneys, and Libby because he says they are PURE EVIL!!
My Veep, Bush 41 was THE MOST EVIL, and I was HIS TRAITOR-MONKEY…
Master Satan LOVES THEM ALL SO MUCH, and is waiting for them to COME HOME FOR ETERNITY!!

July 11th, 2007 at 7:16 pmHey, Ronald Reagan (NOW DEAD) and Master Satan! Yeah I’m lookin at you!
GUCCI, PRADA wearing, LOUDMOUTH, Corporate BUYING screecher. I wonder how many strip MALLS are circling the CONGRESS?
Nancy Pelosi, serial shopper and TREASURER to the retail industry â„¢.
(Have fun at the mall, Screecher Pelosi, because I’LL BE THERE TOO.)
BWAHAHAHAHGAGAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH!!!
MASTER Pelosi!
July 11th, 2007 at 7:16 pmFeel safer now?
July 11th, 2007 at 7:17 pmHow about now?
And besides this, if Americans are patently against the war and George Bush, don’t you think they should have exercised some responsibilty and thought twice about re-electing him and his Halliburton chronies back into office?
Comment by Markus Arelius — July 11, 2007 @ 6:51 pm
If the voting public had been given the chance to make an informed opinion about the matter, they would have thrown all their asses out on the street. But the Bush administration has done, and continues to do, everything it can to keep the public from learning the truth. If the public knew then how much they have lied on virtually every subject, they would never have given them as many votes as they had, and Ohio wouldn’t have mattered one way or the other.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:18 pmOnce tonybaloney’s cush-daddy non-job has expired, he’d better lay way low – someone from he press corps going to kick his teeth out in a d.c. back alley
(i’ll laugh out loud when i read about it in the news, too)
press secretaries don’t get secret service protection for life, tonybaloney – better play nice with Gregory-
righties should be dealt with using the means they themselves advocate for dealing with others. a generous taste of the medicine they so freely prescribe for others might just convince them to keep their juvenile mouths shut for a change, and let the grownups and smart people tackle the real tough problems.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:19 pmSecond whacks hurt more. Consider carefully….. :) — Yeah? I was sorta counting on that. LOL I’ll definitely go with the rain-check. ya never know when a good whacking will come in handy. It’d be good to have one ready.

He has a SPECIAL PLSCE in hell for them…
First thing he’s going to do is BREAK Georgie’s face, then do it AGAIN and AGAIN for ETERNITY.
While Georgie is sodomized by “dick” Nixon!!!
Satan Bless the Bushes, Cheneys, Libbys, Rumsfelds, and Bill O’Dildo!

July 11th, 2007 at 7:25 pmnot surprising for snow job.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:26 pmWhy not get the real Baghdad Bob as a replacement? He doesn’t speak English, so the WH could control the translation. That way they could control what he thinks the reporters say and what the reporters think he’s saying. It would be perfect. Serious questions would be received as insults and the answers would be anything the WH wanted them to be! The potential is mind-boggling. Plus then the WH could point to another ex-Saddamite redeemed! Foreward Surge!

July 11th, 2007 at 7:42 pmI don’t go to malls. I go to very expensive shoe stores to shop during national emergencies. My hero is Imelds Marcos.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:44 pmI guess Darth and the NeoCon plan has worked; they are making sure OBL stayed on the loose and Al Qaida survives so they have an excuse to stay in Iraq. Only problem, they got stronger than was expected.
So I guess we can say Chertoff is right in having a “gut feeling”.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:49 pmNot many people know this, but Bush never won Ohio in 2004. I promised I would deliver Ohio’s electoral votes to Bush. I kept my promise.
And no, you cannot see how my voting machines work! That would be an infringement on my rights!

Comment by Wally O’Dell CEO of Diebold — July 11, 2007 @ 7:53 pm
Except that you have no right to falsify the election results of a state, so your rights would not be violated. You did, however, violate the rights of the people of Ohio.
But you already knew that, didn’t you?
July 11th, 2007 at 7:56 pmmy buddy W needs me. I’m very useful. Besides, he got rid of that secular hedonist Saddam for me and opened up Iraq for the true believers. Your army nearly had me at Bora Bora, but W and the Pakistanis saved me.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:58 pmThe apostrophe was a nice touch, Oscar Wilde.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:03 pmWe the American people pay Tony Snow’s salary. It is past time for us to demand an employee who can tell the truth and provide accurate information to our press corp. Fire Tony. Get someone who can speak to the press without that god awful attitude and smirk.

My family and W’s family have been business partners for a long time. Arbusto, Harken, BCCI, Carlyle, Afghan Poppy business. Why do you think his father’s CIA name in 1963 was “POPPY”? Because it’s unusual to be a father? Get real !!!

July 11th, 2007 at 8:10 pmI’m glad the grown-ups are back in charge in Washington.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:12 pmI bet Tony Snow’s kids are so proud to have a man like him for a Father.
Thank you Ron and Master,
W’s father was “head of anti-terrorism” when he sold thousands of missiles to Iran in the 80’s.
I know Ron “doesn’t recall”, but I bet you do, Master.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:13 pmRon and Poppy and Ollie and Casey spent billions of dollars recruiting for us and supplying us or we never could have set Afghanistan back 1,000 years like we did. They tried to run the money through Pakistan so it wouldn’t be too obvious.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:18 pmRot in hell Tony Snow. There is a very special place reserved for you there. You’ll get there quicker than your brethren, but eventually George, Dick and Condi will be there with you so you can party on complaining about all those damn defeatist leftists who took back the government and spoiled all your fun.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:22 pmPerhaps the only legitimate response of the the legitimate press-corps is to walk out of the briefing, or turn their backs, drop their trousers or skirts, and moon the lying bastards.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:24 pmYou were bad enough WITHOUT the brain mets, Tony.

Hilarious. CT_V1 choose his handle for its easy spelling or what?
CT_V1, should that have been “it’s” or was I right with “its”?
July 11th, 2007 at 8:38 pmTony Snow is so mean to the press and they just take it.
Do you think they feel sorry for him so they let him get away with that shit?
The man NEVER ANSWERS a question. Never.

July 11th, 2007 at 9:30 pmWe all know that as soon as the White House is through with Snow, back to Fox Nuts Channel he goes, continuing in the same role he is now, only getting paid more.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:44 pmWhile the U.S. government and media keep focusing on defense policies and the war in Iraq, 1.2 billion people in the world continue surviving on less than $1 dollar a day. I would like to see Senator McCain be supportive of more international affairs that affect our place in this world. We should not forget the commitment made towards the U.N. Millennium Goals (a pact of ending extreme world hunger by the year 2025) in 2000. While the U.S. government and media keep focusing on defense policies and the war in Iraq, 1.2 billion people in the world continue surviving on less than $1 dollar a day. According to The Borgen Project, an annual $19 billion dollars is needed to eliminate half of the extreme poverty affecting the world by the year 2015. To my sense, it is almost unacceptable to have spent so far more than $340 billion in Iraq only, when we have more than war immunities to change the world and eliminate poverty.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:45 pmWhat if he got religion and decided to tell the truth?
July 11th, 2007 at 9:49 pmHe may be out of chances already.
Habitual deceit leads to …….running for public office as an elephant?
Sorry,couldn’t help it.
Tony Snow is a fool.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:59 pmTony Snow is an extreme caricature of a Press Secretary. He’s delusional as is his boss. They live in a small isolated little world of their own making. Out of touch doesn’t describe it. Mental illness doesn’t describe it.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:09 pmDespite what Snow says republicans are abandoning this president in droves. They will continue to do so until this wrong policy is changed. Lugar criticized the surge and the president’s policy in Iraq. He was not asking for “some bipartisanship comity”. The reporter was right, Snow’s denial is indicative of how out of touch this White House and this president are from reality. The American people are not focused on defeat in any way.
Rather the American people are focused now on getting our soldiers out of Iraq. Bush is only focused on protecting his poor legacy. We don’t want more Americans to die in a war they can’t win. This civil war is between the Shiias and the Sunnis. We can’t fight it for them. Bush’s policies in Iraq are taking us toward certain defeat. Snow is not “clueless” he is clearly lying which makes this administration look even worse than being out of touch. This war has made us less safe. There are more terrorists today in Iraq than there were before 9-11. Its time to get out.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:23 pmTony Snow looks as if he has one foot in the grave already and he continues to lie as if he is going to live forever.I’m afraid he is in for a shock when he stands before his maker and he says “Depart from me you liar,I never knew you”.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:23 pmThe face of this country has never been more snide and ugly than what we are seeing now with Tony Snow – the man has lost it. Throw the blonde chick on stage at least – akin to playing nice music on the top deck of the Titanic. But I’ll turn off the volume.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:27 pmThe Bush administration: Always working hard to raise the level of the political discourse in the US of A.
/sarcasm off
July 12th, 2007 at 1:53 amTONY NEXT TIME CALL THEM SURRENDER MONKEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 12th, 2007 at 1:54 amIf there’s one thing Snow and Bush know a lot about, it’s defeat!
July 12th, 2007 at 2:34 amBut the reporters don’t look like defeatists, they’re only asking questions. Tony is answering them with bull, so he is clueless, or he wants to be.
July 12th, 2007 at 5:30 amUmm…I can’t speak for Tony, but I would. I have no respect for any politician, much less that hypocritical tool Spector.
July 12th, 2007 at 9:25 amOh dear! Tony did the little snearing disdain and dismissive contempt thingy again. What will we ever do!
July 12th, 2007 at 9:44 amObviously, Snow’s colon cancer isn’t doing its job — just like he isn’t doing his.
