Former White House aide Sara M. Taylor will refuse to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee today “about matters President Bush has deemed shielded by executive privilege, but she will offer to respond to other questions from senators that do not breach White House confidentiality.”

“I believe we are entering a period this summer of increased risk,” Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the Chicago Tribune’s editorial board yesterday. He indicated that his “remarks were based on ‘a gut feeling’ formed by past seasonal patterns of terrorist attacks, recent Al Qaeda statements and intelligence he did not disclose.” Keith Olbermann responds.

Sen. David Vitter visited a Canal Street brothel several times “beginning in the mid-1990s, paying $300 per hour for services at the bordello.” Attempting to defend Vitter against the solicitation of prostitution charges, the so-called “Canal Street Madam” whose operation was shut down by a federal investigators in 2001 said, “I want his wife to know he’s a good man.”

“Two senior Justice Department officials said yesterday that they kept Attorney General Alberto Gonzales apprised of FBI violations of civil liberties and privacy safeguards in recent years.” Gonzales told Congress: “There has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse” after 2001. But Assistant Attorney General for National Security Kenneth L. Wainstein said, “I’m sure we’ve discussed violations that have occurred in the past.”

Baseball bats going extinct. At a baseball bat factory tucked into the lush tree country in northwestern Pennsylvania, the operators have drawn up a “three-to-five-year emergency plan” if the white ash tree, which has been used for decades to make the bat of choice, is compromised by the effects of global warming.

The Fish and Wildlife Service “took the first step yesterday” toward declaring 10 penguin species endangered. Their survival “is deemed at risk in part because of the increasing warmth of the atmosphere and the oceans” because of global warming.

Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) will unveil a bill today that would require “power producers, refiners and steelmakers in the U.S….to cut greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2030.” The so-called cap-and-trade system would create a market for trading greenhouse gas permits.

“More than two dozen mortar shells pounded the Green Zone on Tuesday, killing three people, including a U.S. military member, and injuring 18, among them five Americans.”

Yesterday, the White House promised to veto a House bill “that would slash subsidies paid to college student-loan companies.” The legislation has “been attacked by the $85 billion student-loan industry, but championed by industry critics, including some student groups.”

And finally: Congratulations, Springfield, VT! The small New England town (pop. 9,500) beat out 13 other Springfields to host the premiere of The Simpsons Movie. Yesterday, Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy issued a statement: “After 18 years, it’s good to finally welcome the Simpsons home. Vermonters love The Simpsons. … Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie will look great on that yellow carpet with the Green Mountains as a backdrop.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Well there goes our hope that Ms. Taylor is a person of integrity. Or, more likely, her life has been threatened. And we all know that anything of importance she could say will be “shielded by executive privilege.

OK congress, it’s time to act. Find Ms. Taylor in contempt of congress and do the same for Ms. Meiers. The time to play nice is long past. The time to start playing by their rules is now. And their rules are, anything goes.

Kucinich: Iraq Four Years Too Long, Can Iran Be Far Behind?
    2007-07-10

“The President has requested additional time for his Iraq strategy. Time for what? Time to privatize Iraq’s oil? Time to change the subject with an attack on Iran? Congress must act to end this war and end it now.

“We must tell the President NO to any additional funding. No legislation is required. No vote is required. The only thing required is honesty, integrity and a willingness to end the war.

“The war is based on lies. The President and the Vice President have no credibility whatsoever on matters relating to our national defense. They sent more than 3,600 of our brave men and women to their deaths. They are responsible for creating the conditions that have led to the deaths of an estimated one million innocent Iraqis. They have set in motion spending for Iraq which could top one trillion dollars. They now have three aircraft carriers in the Gulf setting the stage for an attack on Iran.

“What will it take for Congress to wake up and tell the American people the truth? We do not have to fund the war. We have the money to bring the troops home. It does not require a vote. It requires determination and truth,” Kucinich concluded.

I make that another wingnut talking point busted by science.

  6. Katie says:

You gotta love what Vitter’s wife said one time:

In 2000, Vitter was included in a Newhouse News Service story about the strain of congressional careers on families.

His wife, Wendy, was asked by the Newhouse reporter: If her husband were as unfaithful as Livingston or former President Bill Clinton, would she be as forgiving as Hillary Rodham Clinton?

“I’m a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary,” Wendy Vitter told Newhouse News. “If he does something like that, I’m walking away with one thing, and it’s not alimony, trust me.”

“I think fear is a very good motivating factor in a marriage,” she added. “Don’t put fear down.”

I really do wonder what she had to say to him when he “confessed”.

  7. dogjudge says:

Alan Greenspan, while head of the Federal Reserve, was always cautious about things that he would say for fear that it would have an affect on the markets and the economy.

Here is the head of Homeland Security making this idiotic statement based on a “gut” feel.

God this administration has sunk to new lows.

  8. Wayne says:

“Two senior Justice Department officials said yesterday that they kept Attorney General Alberto Gonzales apprised of FBI violations of civil liberties and privacy safeguards in recent years.”

OK, Congress, get off your collective a$$es and issue those Contempt of Congress, Perjury and Obstruction of Justice citations and charge, try, and jail the criminal.
And impeach the Chimp, so he doesn’t let another criminal get off with a pardon or commute of sentence.

  9. Apple says:

At Aspen, Rove said Iraq would not be an issue for voters next year. Take that together with Chertoff’s ‘gut’ feeling about another attack here and you’ve got yourself a fake terrorist attack somewhere in America and war in Iran in 2008. (Don’t forget, there were no wmd’s.)

  10. Wayne says:

The Dems have a numerical majority – not a “working” majority – due to the slim majority they hold in the Senate, they are tied up in proceedural red tape. To blame them for inaction is to play into the hands of the Neocon thugs. Focus your anger on your Republic Congresspersons (if you are represented by such). Screaming at your fighter to knock the other guy out will not help in a close match – it will only frustrate your boxer.

Focus your energy on defeating those supporting the Fascist Cabal.

  18. Future Troll says:

Wayne: Heh. You know the Nancy-boys in the Congress will never have enough courage to do that.

  19. DRxJ says:

Welp, here we go again, as TripMaster Monkey stated…FEAR!
Not only do we have to “fear” this summer due to “a gut feeling” regarding the ever imminent terrorists attack on our mainland, but now, if we bring our troops home from Iraq, we shall have to “fear” the security of our children and grandchildren. WTF is wrong with your, Dubya?

On a lighter note, the so-called “Canal Street Madam” whose operation was shut down by a federal investigators in 2001 said, “I want his wife to know he’s a good man.”
Well yeah, having a customer pay $300 per visit to have his knob polished is “a good man”! Hell, as long as you is paid, it’s all good!!!!

  20. missmolly says:

This is truly scary — the Bushies desperately need another “terrorist attack” on American soil to justify bombing Iran. Will they stage one themselves, or just relax security enough to invite one — hoping AQ will oblige?

And where are they going to get the manpower needed for an Iran invasion? It’s starting to feel drafty in here…

Paying for sex is the hallmark of a true looser. If you are so ugly/smelly/fat/overbearing/stupid that you can’t attract a sex parter without paying for it, you truly are beyond redemption. I guess it’s like eating garden slugs: Offer someone enough money, and they’ll do it.

The fact that you need “gaydar” says quite a bit about your confidence in your sexual orientation. Get thee to a deprogrammer.

    This is pretty important…

[A new scientific study] shows that for the last 20 years, the Sun’s output has declined, yet temperatures on Earth have risen.

It also shows that modern temperatures are not determined by the Sun’s effect on cosmic rays, as has been claimed.

Writing in the Royal Society’s journal Proceedings A, the researchers say cosmic rays may have affected climate in the past, but not the present.

“This should settle the debate,” said Mike Lockwood, from the UK’s Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory, who carried out the new analysis together with Claus Froehlich from the World Radiation Center in Switzerland.

Marcus: More often it’s not about one’s inability to get sex, but more about being able to have just sex without any commitments or boring rituals like dating. Sure I’ve paid for sex many times, because it’s just as easy as going to McDonalds for a snack.

Your aversion to commitment and your characterization of dating as a “boring ritual” that is to be avoided speak volumes about your character…or lack thereof.

At least you’re considerate enough to not bother trying to cultivate a relationship…I’d pity any woman unfortunate enough to be stuck with a man who equates making love to going through the Mickey D’s drive-thru.

Yeah, right. You find dating boring? Have you ever been on a date? Don’t forget: you can always jerk-off for free. Then you could afford a haircut that will get you laid. Nothing says looser like having to pay a woman (or, in your case, a boy, a man, or a shepherd), to hold their breath (or traaumatize their sheep) long enough to get near you.

Go to the gym. Buy some nice clothes. Get a good haircut. And for god’s sake, take a shower and wear deodorant. In the end, it’ll make you a better person.

I had a few dates back in the 1990s, but after that I decided that it’s simply not worth it. Boring, slow, and in the end it’s essentially about the same thing as prostitution: the girl buys guy’s attention, protection, affluence and influence with sex.

sorry, the only way to “upset the status quo” is to publicly air the crimes, lay them out in a public trial. Let the American public then watch to see which republicans vote to aquit.

If we do not make these criminals pay for their crimes, within 8 -12 years after this next election we will have another neocon in the White House doing it all over again.

Alright now, I really don’t want to play referee here, but let’s lay some facts down shall we:

There are those men who really don’t give a flyin’ f*ck about a woman’s emotions and feelings. These are called womanizers, and they are better off paying for sex instead of scarring a female with a “faux” relationship.
Then there are those who are addicted to “sex”, that crave that one ultimate orgasmic outcome, with no emotional attachements whatsoever.

Guess we have to agree to disagree on this one.

We have a majority in the House, impeachment would pass and a public impeachment trial would be required.
Cheney’s impeachment has 11 co-sponsors now. At this point, the Republicans are trying to think of any way possible to get rid of cheney right now. I think he would be convicted and ousted.

Bush’s support is also waining. The Republicans are starting to realize they may not be electable at all in the near future by continuing their support of this criminal administration.

  98. Ben Dover says:

This morning’s New York Times contains an article on the proposal to protect 10 species of penguins under the Endangered Species Act. One of the reasons (factors) used to justify the potential listing is climate change.

The story goes on to say that Acting on a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group based in Arizona, the service said it had enough evidence to begin a full-scale review of the 10 groups of penguins. The review is to determine things like the rates of decline and their possible causes.

The irony of this move is that if the Fish and Wildlife Service listed one species of penguin or 10 or all of them it wouldn’t make a damned bit of difference to the conservation or preservation of the species because none of them live within the jurisdiction of the US government and therefore are not subject to the provisions of the Endangered Species Act. The one possible hook is that if listed, the species would be on the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) list. Unfortunately there isn’t much “trade” in penguins so what’s the point of the listing?

The answer is simple – politics.

There is an election coming in November 2008 and the party in charge of the White House these days is a little less than stalwart on issues related to the protection of the environment. Who will ever forget “president” Chimpy McFlightsuit’s rejection and evisceration of the Kyoto Protocol that exists solely to bring down the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and thereby slow down global warming.

The Bush Administration can now list 10 species of penguins and say they are doing it to protect the birds from the ravages of global warming but the reality is nothing will change. Millions of people who went to a recent Disney movie about penguins will think that something is being done to protect the birds. The environmentally challenged Bush administration will think that they have pulled the wool over the eyes of those who care about the environment because they will think the birds are “protected.” They aren’t protected now by any Federal laws in the United States and listing them under the ESA won’t change things one iota.

But it will make for great politics won’t it? And nothing will change.

    1) There has not been “one” … it’s well into the thousands by now!

    2) There has not been one “verified” … sure, I’ve seen tons of reports, I just haven’t verified any of them.

    3. “Case” I specifically said “case.” I have reports, and they’ve been verified, but I know for a fact that we haven’t open a case on any one of them yet.

    4) “Civil liberties?” What are those?

    5) Abuse – is akin to the pain one feels due to organ failure or death. No civil liberties have suffered any abuse.

Poverty In The US Is Disgraceful!
    Wednesday 11th of July 2007
    by Jay Randal

Whenever I go on road trips, to any location, I observe where the wealthy people reside and notice where poor people are forced to live, so seeing poverty disgusts me.

Some Americans must be blind to the poverty, because wherever you drive in America you will pass an area of poverty somewhere along the drive, so disgraceful.

You can be driving beautiful mountain road, then see poverty like in North Carolina, or be in a lovely part of a city, then make wrong turn into complete squalor.

Every big city in America has backstreets of poverty, such as Atlanta and Los Angeles, even in Washington our capital the outskirts are poverty stricken ghettos.

There is no justifiable reasons for poverty to still exist in America, so US Congress is derelict in eliminating the scourge of poverty, and must stop helping the elite.

Wasting tons of money on the Iraq Fiasco War is an outrage, since winning the “War On Poverty” is more important, than funding a bogus occupation for OIL.

  113. Ben Dover says:

#100. The Endangered species Act is US legislation. There are Solicitors Opinions and other forms of documentation that make it abundantly clear that although a species may be listed in the US, when it is outside the boundaires/jurisdiction of the US, the protections of the ESA do not cover the species. The only ESA related “hook” is the CITES list but that regulates only trade in species, it does nothing for habitat conservation which is at the crux of most of the issues affecting endangered species.

This is nothing but a feel-good move. If the Fish and Wildlife Service lists these birds it will still result in there being no “teeth” for their protection. Its political gamesmanship, a graduate level course, we’re dealing with here.

  114. ForTruth says:

    CHERTOFF:
“If you get to complacency then I guarantee you we will lose the race with the terrorists,” he said.

=———— He also referred to the war on terror as a ‘competition’. Seems kinda ‘off his rocker’ to me. Then later he says:

There will be security repercussions from Congress’ failure to pass immigration reform. Chertoff hoped granting a path to citizenship to illegal immigrants would cut away “the tall grass” hiding criminal elements among the undocumented workers.

But now, Chertoff said, his agency must uphold current laws and that means a further crackdown on workplaces.

“We are going to do more law enforcement actions,” he said.

Conceding the raids are “going to be ugly” and tear parents from their children who wonder why they have not returned from work, Chertoff warned: “the consequences are going to be tough from an economic and humanitarian standpoint.”

Here’s your Homeland Security guy…..securing the homeland will be tough from a humanitarian standpoint?

  121. shane says:

Chertoff’s the little boy who cried wolf. If or when we really need to listen to warnings we will all ignore them. Either he has information or he doesn’t, how does his telling us about a “gut feeling” help Homeland Security?

  126. Probus says:

Bush should not be able to tell former White House officials that they can’t testify before Congress. They no longer work for him. Congress has a job to do here. They have to provide oversight over the Executive branch. Bush can’t claim executive privilege over every issue. Taylor has put herself in a very difficult situation she can’t answer some questions and refuse to answer others. If she does that then she will sooner or later contradict herself and commit perjury before Congress – a very serious crime. Miers too should testify.

Chertoff can’t scare the American people based on how he feels. He must base it on credible intelligence that is specific to the threat. If he has seen intelligence to back up his claims he must reveal it (without giving out classified information).

Vitter has lost all credibility. His hypocrisy will be remembered by the voters of Louisiana and he will be voted out. The democrats have a very good chance of picking up his seat in 2010. While the statute of limitations has expired he clearly broke the law. He is accountable to the people of his state. He doesn’t deserve to serve in the US Senate. Congress should investigate if Vitter broke any other laws in connection with his crimes. He should resign his seat from the Senate like Livingston.

If Gonzales lied in front on Congress he committed the worst kind of perjury. Congress should call for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate his perjury. As the AG of the nation he must enforce the law and he can’t do that without the confidence of the American people if he broke it which in this case it looks like he did.
