Bush should not be able to tell former White House officials that they can't testify before Congress. They no longer work for him. Congress has a job to do here. They have to provide oversight over the Executive branch. Bush can't claim executive privilege over every issue. Taylor has put herself in a very difficult situation she can't answer some questions and refuse to answer others. If she does that then she will sooner or later contradict herself and commit perjury before Congress - a very serious crime. Miers too should testify.

Chertoff can't scare the American people based on how he feels. He must base it on credible intelligence that is specific to the threat. If he has seen intelligence to back up his claims he must reveal it (without giving out classified information).

Vitter has lost all credibility. His hypocrisy will be remembered by the voters of Louisiana and he will be voted out. The democrats have a very good chance of picking up his seat in 2010. While the statute of limitations has expired he clearly broke the law. He is accountable to the people of his state. He doesn't deserve to serve in the US Senate. Congress should investigate if Vitter broke any other laws in connection with his crimes. He should resign his seat from the Senate like Livingston.

If Gonzales lied in front on Congress he committed the worst kind of perjury. Congress should call for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate his perjury. As the AG of the nation he must enforce the law and he can't do that without the confidence of the American people if he broke it which in this case it looks like he did.

Former White House aide Sara M. Taylor will refuse to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee today “about matters President Bush has deemed shielded by executive privilege, but she will offer to respond to other questions from senators that do not breach White House confidentiality.”

And thse other questions will be answered "I don't recall."

Chertoff's the little boy who cried wolf. If or when we really need to listen to warnings we will all ignore them. Either he has information or he doesn't, how does his telling us about a "gut feeling" help Homeland Security?

Or does his gut feeling tell him that Cheney's going to order a terror attack.

"Here’s your Homeland Security guy…..securing the homeland will be tough from a humanitarian standpoint?"

Comment by SGT Higgins

Well the name, "Homeland Security" always had a whiff of the dictatorial; is it really such a stretch to envision Nazi-style forced relocations? The only real difference between the two, is one made Jews the great evil, the other, Mexicans. The rhetoric used is much the same.

Happy to see Chertoff doing his small part (for the WH) of whipping up fear for those easily manipulated conservatives who might be thinking that getting out of Iraq is finally a good idea. Not so quick, people! Not so quick!

Fear mongering mother f***er. Your tactics are so darn sophisticated.

I haven't had a chance to read the thread yet, so if I am repeating something, I appologize.
Regaarding Vitter's wife and her statement she made about te Clintons; doesn't it seem to you that she is makeing a public statement that is actually a warning to her husband? It is like she knew what he was doing and finally got a chance to say what she really wanted to say about it.
Heh
F-ing hypocrites.

“I believe we are entering a period this summer of increased risk,” Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the Chicago Tribune’s editorial board yesterday. He indicated that his “remarks were based on ‘a gut feeling’ formed by past seasonal patterns of terrorist attacks, recent Al Qaeda statements and intelligence he did not disclose.”

CHERTOFF:
"If you get to complacency then I guarantee you we will lose the race with the terrorists," he said.

=------------ He also referred to the war on terror as a 'competition'. Seems kinda 'off his rocker' to me. Then later he says:

There will be security repercussions from Congress' failure to pass immigration reform. Chertoff hoped granting a path to citizenship to illegal immigrants would cut away "the tall grass" hiding criminal elements among the undocumented workers.

But now, Chertoff said, his agency must uphold current laws and that means a further crackdown on workplaces.

"We are going to do more law enforcement actions," he said.

Conceding the raids are "going to be ugly" and tear parents from their children who wonder why they have not returned from work, Chertoff warned: "the consequences are going to be tough from an economic and humanitarian standpoint."

Former White House aide Sara M. Taylor will refuse to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee today “about matters President Bush has deemed shielded by executive privilege, but she will offer to respond to other questions from senators that do not breach White House confidentiality.”

I knew it!

#100. The Endangered species Act is US legislation. There are Solicitors Opinions and other forms of documentation that make it abundantly clear that although a species may be listed in the US, when it is outside the boundaires/jurisdiction of the US, the protections of the ESA do not cover the species. The only ESA related "hook" is the CITES list but that regulates only trade in species, it does nothing for habitat conservation which is at the crux of most of the issues affecting endangered species.

This is nothing but a feel-good move. If the Fish and Wildlife Service lists these birds it will still result in there being no "teeth" for their protection. Its political gamesmanship, a graduate level course, we're dealing with here.

Interestingly enough, Sara Taylor isn't turning her mic off when she talks to her attorney. With proper audio enhancement, you could tell what she was saying. If this is audible, is it admissible?

True enough! But honestly, for a kid in HS, I WAS making really good money. More than made up for the occasional 'telling-off' I got.
