But three protestors belonging to the Christian Right anti-abortion group Operation Save America loudly interrupted the invocation, stating, “Lord Jesus, forgive us father for allowing a prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight.” Watch it:

It points out that pagan Rome thought the gods punished society collectively for the public sins of a few, and their main objection to Christians was their refusal to engage in the communal religious rituals, including the worship of the Emperor’s genius (protector spirit) – analogous to the JWs’ refusal to say the pledge. Christianity was persecuted because the pagans were afraid that Christians’ decision to opt out of communal worship would be seen as a snub by the gods, who would punish the community collectively for permitting that snub.
Conservative Christians are the new pagans. Their god punishes collectively, so any presence of any unorthodox worship in public risks raising their god’s ire.
It’s a sign of how backward their thinking – and theology – is.

You make one good point and one confusing point.
First, it’s great that you have a school for people who are all part of your religion. That’s the wonderful thing about American democracy. You can builf your own religious school. Public schools are governed by the Constitution of the United States which forbids establishments of religion.
Second, the reason behind a lack on an attack on those schools. Probably has something to do with the rareness and randomness of school shootings and terrorist attacks (I’m not sure which you meant). Being a christian never stopped the KKK from committing terrorist attacks on Black homes and churches. Certainly some of the victims of Columbine, Viriginia Tech, Texas A&M and dozens of other school must have been good Christians. Life is tough and sometime people die even when they’ve been a good, pious person.
All I’m saying is that there are bigger issues and you seem dead set on simplifying everything.
This is only meant in the spirit of discussion… try not to flame me for it.

And, I have to correct my earlier statement about Hinduism’s age – the first scriptures date back to about 6500 BC, so it’s as old (if not older) than the Hebrew faith (I think Buddhism was formed around 300 BC).

Actually, studies have shown that prayer is a means for divisiveness and ridicule to those who do not participate (I saw this happen at my own school where they violated the law and said a prayer at a manditory school function, where one of my students who chose not to bow his head and participate was harrassed).
Studies by people of faith have also shown that prayer does not work at all.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Your “historical contexts” are always one-sided. Muslims are bad because they expanded through the ruins of the Roman Empire, yet you’ve never condemned the Romans for imposing that empire on other people in the first place.
Regardless of what the New Testament says, medieval Christians were just as brutal as their contemporary Muslims, if not more so. Many of the Crusaders robbed and murdered entire Jewish communities before they set off to the East.

At the time of the 1st Crusade, that part of the world was relatively stable and had been for several hundred years. The Muslims no more “started it” than did the Byzantines. If the European crusaders were just fighting back against invasion from the East, why then did they refuse to relinquish the land they conquered in Syria and Palestine to the “rightful” owners, the Byzantines? Why did they establish Outremer and set up their own princedoms and kingdoms?

The rest of Europe was divided up among the Visigoths, the Franks, and any number of Germanic tribes. The so-called Roman Empire consisted of Turkey, Greece, part of the Balkans, a few fragments of Italy, and Sicily.
Your “Empire but a Nation” is so ahistorical and delusional, it’s difficult to know where to begin trying to correct it.

I understand that apes evolved into humans because we began to eat animal protein in large enough quantities that allowed our brains to become larger (animal proteins aid the development of blood vessles, which are the basis of the growth of the body parts – why we are taler in the west than people in the east, for example). And that we need certain animo acids that our bodies cannot produce, and that are most abundant in animals.

History tells us that the signers of the Declaration of Independence were devout Christians who pledged their “sacred honor” as they declared a breaking away from their homeland. Their ideals still live today. We, as a nation, do not force anyone to be a member of a particular religion or denomination. We tolerate most any spirtual belief that man may posess as long as the worship aspect does not violate existing laws for instance human sacrifice. Personally, I would never have asked a Hindu priest to offer a prayer to what I consider a false god in a chamber of government in a nation that by its own founding documents declares itself to ordain Christianity. Whomever made such a decision was obviously blind to the possibility of the backlash that would not only be expected but guaranteed. I think such action is an insult to the memory of valiant men who pledged everything they owned to establish this nation. The Bible tells me that although the Hindu priest may be a good man, a moral man, a compassionate man, without accepting the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross as payment in full for all of his sins and declaring that Jesus is Lord of his life then regardless of his moral compass he will spend eternity separated from a Holy God in a place the Bible describes as a place where there will be “weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth.” A most desolate place when the alternative is so easily attained by a gift of God’s grace. There is nothing man can do on his own to reach Heaven. It is appropriate in my opinion to oppose the presentation of Hindu prayers in governmental assemblies in a Christian nation. I only wish there had been more elected officials that would have stood with the protesters rather than fear they might offend potential voters.

The Hindu, The Buddist, and the Christian argued about whose “God” was the correct one. The Hindu said, “God is Everywhere, in the trees, rocks, heaven, in us”. Why do we have ANY prayers in a government function. Stupid and hypocritical.

They founded the government of biblical principles and therefor set rules and standards to follow. Yes there is freedom of religion, what does this mean?
It means people of ALL religions regardless of who thinks it’s right will be welcomed to live and practice freely.
Should they have been rude and jump in during the prayer? no
Should the hindu clergy have done the prayer? I hear nothing that he says force hinduism or goes against anything that christians would believe.
However as franklin states “a clergy of the city” will be requested.

Although, like it or not, our nation was founded as “One Nation Under God” – Not GodS plural. Later, when that message was placed on our currency – it represented the vast majority of the lives, beliefs, and writings of the Founding Fathers. As Hinduism is polythestic that does not represent our nations founding, it has no place as the opening Senate prayer.

There are NOT 3000 Gods in the Hindu religion; these are just various manifestations/representations of one-divine being.
India is about 7 to 10% Christian, and the Indian parliament would/does allow Christian prayers (along with Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, etc.) to be said before sessions; all of these individuals are part of the social fabric as well, and as in every equitable democracy, they are entitled to represent their beliefs.
What the priest said was not even a Hindu prayer, but just a general inspirational word about “God”, in a very non-denominational way. In the end, we are all praying to the same divine being (one who happens, by the way, not appreciate bigotry).
For all the Christians out there, please understand the most people of other religions realize that 99% of you are wonderful, tolerant people, and that bigots like the protesters (and some on this page) do not represent the majority.

You can verify this by going to OSA’s website and reading the article on there. The website is http://www.operationsaveamerica.com. They weren’t just hanging out in Congress by chance. They had advance warning from someone a Hindu was going to pray. They went there to cause a scene and get attention. The entire OSA group is nothing but a racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, christian supremist group. Last year in Jackson Mississippi during one of their “anti-abortion” protest they tore up copy of the Koran and a gay pride flag and burned them. Apparently burning a Koran and pride flag is the best way to stop abortions. OSA has a picture of the father involved of the incident in Congress in Jackson during the protest. OSA members have also protested the Phelps who protest soldiers’ funerals. The reason for OSA protesting the Phelps? They said they weren’t homophobic enough because the Phelps accepted help from the ACLU with a lawsuit. This can also be verified on OSA’s website. Again this was all a set up to get attention.

While I believe that Jesus is the messiah of the one true god, I follow the teachings of jesus’s tolerance towards others. And, many of you seem to think that worshiping another god makes someone evil, when in fact during the three days after Christ’s death on the cross he ventured into limbo to save the good people that had yet to be saved from their orignal sin.
Also keep in mind that jesus was a jewish man of arabian descent, and wass in fact at one point a respected rabi.
Even though many people in this message system think that these people represent christianity and in response insult the entire religion, all of the inflamatory remarks by christians are insulting to jesus’s sacrifice.
Remember “turn the other cheek” and “love the sinner, hate only the sin.”

The hypocrisy in the way modern Christianity is practiced is dumbfounding and tragic.
Justice in Christianity is between man and God, not man and man.
It was the Old Testament who proclaimed an eye for an eye, but I don’t see Jews going around smiting down Hindus the way Christians do.
In the New Testament, the foundation of Christianity, Jesus asks us to love each other and care for each other. Only through faith in God’s justice, and by loving your fellow man will you achieve your salvation. Smiting down someone because you believe they’re a sinner will condemn you–because it shows you do not truly believe in God’s power and justice. Another man’s sins are between him and God, and it is only for God to judge, not for you. We are all flawed in some way, all sinners.
Do not forget that Jesus sat with sinners. He invited them to him.

And I think the outburst of hatred has served to catalyze all thinking, open-minded people to put differences between themselves aside and stand together in defense of tolerance, freedom of speech and respect for one another. The protesters couldn’t have done more of a service to the cause of civil liberties.

I would simply like to say that standing before the Senate and requesting the forgiveness of our one true heavenly Father for allowing a non-christian individual to invoke the blessings of a pagan god took more faith and boldness than most any of us have ever shown. And to the three who stood for their beliefs and those of the founding fathers of this great country we call our home, I would like to say “well done”.
Many individuals would like to forget that this country was founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the very Word of God. In doing so, they would allow the wrath of God to be released on this great country. God is real, and His anger is as real as His love. Which would you invoke?
I believe we are intelligent enough to look to the past and realize that we have an obligation and a duty to uphold the beliefs which brought our founding fathers to this land. After all, wasn’t the reason they came here so that they could worship as they chose, and live godly, moral lives without fear of persecution?
The hindu also have that right, yet their country of India doesn’t seem to be too “blessed” (poverty and war prevailing). Have they been praying to the right gods? Do their many gods not see the needs and moral dilemmas they face? Why do they not answer? And why do so many of them choose to live in our country?
Why would we choose to persecute ourselves in the same manner in which they’ve persecuted themselves by allowing the worship of pagan gods in our own senate? The commandment “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” is pretty straight forward. I am assured that our founding fathers knew this and took it to heart and chose to acknowledge the one true God so as to live in the blessings of God. I believe we have an obligation to do the same.

Abortion is the taking of a human life without offering the human life in question any other option but death prior to birth.
However, war is the ends to a mean. Wars are fought to uphold beliefs where disputes arise over issues such as territory, sovereignty, resource, or ideology, and a peaceable resolution cannot be attained.
There is a vast difference between abortion and war.

It doesn’t seem that it can be true that all christians are judgmental, close-minded, mean-spirited people who apparently are compelled to babble their beliefs whenever there’s a space left to cram the words in. July 20th, 2007 at 1:56 pmWhatever the beliefs of the folks that got this country going, the first amendment reads:
“CONGRESS shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof …” It doesn’t actually prohibit the practice of any religion, either on public or private land. Later, there were interpretations of law that were intended to move the government farther away from endorsing any religious activities, because of the completely understandable fear that people who don’t believe what the dominant group believes could end up being marginalized. Reading this thread makes it clear that that is a very realistic caution.
So back again to the question of why there is any sort of prayer at all allowed at the Senate’s morning invocation. People are sworn into office by the use of what is meaningful to them and Article VI of the constitution spells out that it can be religious or a non-religious affirmation. and that no religious test can be applied to candidates for public office. So why should the entire body of the Senate be subjected to any religious invocation at all? It seems that honoring the constitution and upholding the separation of church and state would resolve all of this.
I’m ashamed to think any politician I may have voted for would have allowed such an abomination. The good thing is that we who live for Christ know what’s happening here, and those who don’t are going to be crying for the rocks and mountains to fall on them when Jesus takes the Church home and they’re left behind to suffer the wrath of God on this sinful world! Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus!
