Christian right disrupts first Hindu prayer in the Senate.»

For the first time in history, a Hindu today delivered the Senate’s morning invocation. But three protestors belonging to the Christian Right anti-abortion group Operation Save America loudly interrupted the invocation, stating, “Lord Jesus, forgive us father for allowing a prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight.” Watch it:

TPM’s Eric Kleefeld spoke with the head of Operation Save America today, who called the Hindu invocation “gross idolatry.”

this is what happens when you have fundamentalist christian ideologues attempting to impose their religious beliefs on an entire nation, beliefs fueled by rigid dogmatism, bigotry, homophobia, and intolerance of other religious beliefs, all implicitly sanctioned by the presidential administration and the republican party… even though it’s been overused and abused, the correct term here is indeed the “american taliban…”

  34. PeterW Says:

I read an interesting book called Constantine and the Bishops. It points out that pagan Rome thought the gods punished society collectively for the public sins of a few, and their main objection to Christians was their refusal to engage in the communal religious rituals, including the worship of the Emperor’s genius (protector spirit) - analogous to the JWs’ refusal to say the pledge. Christianity was persecuted because the pagans were afraid that Christians’ decision to opt out of communal worship would be seen as a snub by the gods, who would punish the community collectively for permitting that snub.

Conservative Christians are the new pagans. Their god punishes collectively, so any presence of any unorthodox worship in public risks raising their god’s ire.

It’s a sign of how backward their thinking - and theology - is.

Essentially there is peaceful liberal Christianity that really should distance itself from the other branch that is violent conservative Christianity, by denouncing the hypocrites, calling yourselves something else, and getting rid of all the violence in the bible that fuels the rabid right in the first place (and it does fuel them). Then, stand with all of us who are secular and fight against them to take back our country. Until you do, they think they are the majority with the base word Christian, even though it means different things to the two branches, and they will continue to behave this way.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_religion

The modern legal concept of religious freedom as the union of freedom of belief and freedom of worship with the absence of any state-sponsored religion, originated in the United States of America.

This issue was addressed by Thomas Paine in his pamphlet, Common Sense (1776):

“As to religion, I hold it to be the indispensable duty of all government, to protect all conscientious professors thereof, and I know of no other business which government hath to do therewith…

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was written in 1779 by Thomas Jefferson. It proclaimed:

“[N]o man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer, on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.”

Either way this is clearly an establishment of religion in violation of the first amendment. And if they’re doing it everyday with a Christian pray… that’s just disgraceful.
