Cummins Contradicts Taylor: ‘Tim Griffin Wanted My Job, They Decided To Give It Him’

During the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday on the U.S. attorney scandal, Sen. Arlen Specter asked former White House political director Sara Taylor “whether [former Arkansas U.S. attorney Bud] Cummins was forced out in order to make room for [Karl Rove protege Tim] Griffin.”

Taylor offered a contradictory response, arguing on the one hand Cummins “had been planning to leave” while on the other hand stating “he was, in fact, fired.”

Later in the hearing, Specter asked if “there was a political overtone to the replacement of Mr. Cummins by Mr. Griffin?” I don’t believe that’s the case at all,” Taylor responded. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/07/TaylorCummins.320.240.flv]

In today’s Arkansas Times, Bud Cummins shot back, expressing his disagreement with Taylor’s assesment of how and why he was forced out of office:

Taylor said Wednesday it was her understanding that Cummins had stated as early as 2004 that he was planning to leave. Better communication would have made the transition easier, she added.

Cummins said he does not believe his status played a role in his ouster.

“Tim Griffin wanted my job, they decided to give it him, and because of the arrogance and inexperience of the staff-level folks that handled the execution of a poorly thought-out plan, my loyal and arguably successful service was not considered in any way,” Cummins said.

Despite what Taylor claims, there were “political overtones” to Griffin’s replacement of Cummins. Not only did the White House intentionally bypass Senate approval of Griffin, over the objections of Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR), but in December 2006, Kyle Sampson, then-chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, wrote in an e-mail that getting Griffin appointed was “important to Harriet, Karl, etc” — Karl being Karl Rove.

UPDATE: Alex Koppelman at Salon spoke to Cummins last night about his reaction to Taylor’s testimony:

Cummins says he thinks the “thing about me announcing to the press an intention to leave is way overblown,” and that he “would like to know who was selling [Taylor] that line.”

Transcript:

SEN. ARLEN SPECTER (R-PA): The question has been raised as to whether Mr. Cummins was forced out in order to make room for Mr. Griffin. Do you have personal knowledge as to the answer to that question?

SARA TAYLOR: Let me try to, again, just answer this while also respecting the president’s assertion of executive privilege. Obviously, we’re sitting here today because this whole situation was awkwardly handled.

To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Cummins had been considering leaving. Mr. Cummins had announced in the press that he was leaving. Mr. Cummins had said in the press that he’d been thinking of leaving for a year. Mr. Cummins further said that he was — one of the reasons he was leaving is that he had four children, either college age or heading to college at some point.

And so, you know, we find ourselves in a situation where we have a U.S. attorney who had been planning to leave, to the best of my knowledge. We had identified an exceptionally qualified candidate. And, you know, unfortunately, Mr. Cummins has had to endure all this discussion about him being fired, which as far as I can tell he was, in fact, fired.

[...]

SPECTER: Uh, was there a political overtone to the replacement of Mr. Cummins by Mr. Griffin, to try to carry out some political agenda, as opposed to the public policies of the administration on the priorities of federal prosecutions.

TAYLOR: I don’t believe that’s the case at all.

Ho-hum…yet another lie from a former republic staffer. Hardly news anymore, is it? Especially since Taylor got caught contradicting HERSELF several times during her test-lie-mony yesterday…

This is clearly why they don’t want Almost-Justice Miers going up to the Hill — they can’t even keep their lies straight anymore, so it’s better if they just keep all their co-conspirator repukes from talking about everything!

Yes, but wouldn’t it make more sense to accept the private practice job first and then announce to the press that you’re leaving? Or did he hand out copies of his resume at the press conference?

Typical reupke-lie-can spin tactic — say “I don’t believe the facts,” and then say we’re just having a difference of opinion. Black is white, night is day, losing the war is winning the war, not giving our soldiers R&R is supporting our soldiers…you get the picture.

    A couple of observations:

    1. Did Cummins actually plan to leave his position, or is this just a manufactured story? If Cummins announced in “the press” that he planned to leave prior to his being canned, a LexisNexis search should turn that up.

    2. Since when do we fire people (and that term implies “with cause”) for planning to leave?

This whole thing stinks like a rotting fish.

It’s creepy how you liberals project your hatred of someone’s political affiliation into his or her physical appearance. Every Republican woman is sooooo ugly whereas every Democrat (or not-Republican like P. Fitzgerald) is sooooo pretty and handsome. That’s ridiculous. Things like political affiliation, sexual orientation or goodness/evilness doesn’t magically show in one’s appearance and to suggest otherwise only indicates severe immaturity.

Both Sara and Monica – as well as Dana Perino – are pretty, young professional women and you refuse to acknowledge that simply because you disagree with their ideology. Shame on you.

But no matter what his does Libby will go down in history and always carry the title of White House convicted felon even if he gets a pardon. I know the elected officials that supported Bud are really made that their guys has been used and called dumb. Tim never tried a case or had the experience need for the job so you can only wonder why Karl gave him a job he couldn’t do. Is there love in the air or what.

I’m convinced that they choose to limit their brain activity to their “simple” brain stem which is responsible for anger, fear, bodily functions, and aggression. They wholly reject their evolved mammalian brain areas, where reasoning, analytical skills, pattern forming and critical thinking skills exist.

It’s why they only see scary boogeymen and invisible sky daddies, while we see logic, reason and humanistic ethics.

Taylor can’t have it both ways. Did Cummins quit or was he forced out? Obviously if he did quit there would be no scandal. He was fired to make way for Rove’s protege. Griffin was such a poor choice because the White House didn’t think he would withstand the confirmation process. They replaced an experience USA with a novice. If Griffin’s appointment was important to Rove and Miers then they must testify. Their involvement itself indicates that this was all political and had nothing to do with performance.

Come on, if all you see is the outer looks, without the inner looks, then I predict a long and VERY LONELY life. my wife of 32 years would not have ever appeared in a fashion magazine, but is the most beautiful woman.
