Snow: Iraq Withdrawal Would Bring Terrorists ‘To A Shopping Mall Near You’

Today on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow defended the President’s Initial Benchmark Assessment Report, which argues that the administration is making “progress” in Iraq.

Snow attacked proposals to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, claiming:

To walk out of Iraq right now would plant a seed that ultimately would lead to destabilization there, hundreds of thousands of deaths, loss of our influence in the region, would create instability throughout the Middle East throughout East Asia, throughout Europe. And sooner or later it would come to our shores, to a shopping mall near you.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/07/tonyshoppingmallu.320.240.flv]

But this doomsday scenario is already playing out in Iraq, worsened by the President’s misguided policies:

– Since Bush announced his surge in January, violence has skyrocketed. Close to 600 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have died since January. Military assessments suggest that “the U.S. military’s plan to secure Baghdad against a rising insurgency is falling far short of its goal.” A recent bombing killed over 150 in Baghdad, “one of the deadliest single bombings, if not the deadliest, since the 2003 invasion.”

– The war in Iraq has already destabilized the Middle East and exported terrorism throughout the world. “The rate of fatal terrorist attacks around the world by jihadist groups, and the number of people killed in those attacks, increased dramatically after the invasion of Iraq. Globally there was a 607 percent rise in the average yearly incidence of attacks.”

– The U.S. has already “lost influence” in the region. In a poll of 18 countries, the percentage of “saying that the United States is having a mainly positive influence in the world” dropped 11 points from two years ago, down to just 29 percent. Just 17 percent believe the United States is a stabilizing force in the Middle East.

Furthermore, national security experts recently called the possibility of terrorists following us home after leaving Iraq “remote at best.” Redeploying U.S. forces out of Iraq as quickly as possible would, in fact, enable the United States to better counter the global effects of Bush’s failed strategy.

  9. Juan Kerr Says:

That's presumably supposed to sound very scary indeed, considering that the shopping mall is precisely where we've all been encouraged to go and enjoy ourselves in this utter sham of a war.
'Be afraid folks! These crazy islamists are insane and want to kill you! But don't be so scared that you change your self-indulgent and brainless consumerist lifestyle. Be just scared enough to vote for politicians who say they will protect you'

fear fear fear fear fear. Such propaganda. The politicians told us the communists would be taking over our cities if we left vietnam, and the we'd all be speaking german if we didn't bomb civilians in germany, and on and on and on.

It's time this country has a new focus. Instead of stirring up a hornet's nest and angering people so much that they want to attack, why don't we focus all those trillions (or much less) on a national DE-fense that can actually protect this country. We don't have such a thing now, just OF-fense.

Are we truly to believe that (assuming that the "official" version of events on 9/11 is true) had we already been in Iraq on 9/11, the 19 highjackers would have taken a detour to Iraq to fight our armed forces there instead of commandeering four commercial flights, armed only with boxcutters, leveling three skyscrapers in New York with two planes?

Neocon Bill Kristol expects Bush to attack Pakistan

    Published: Thursday July 12, 2007
Fox News on Thursday asked Neoconservative Bill Kristol to comment on the interim progress report on Iraq, which is about to be released and is expected to show an even split between benchmarks which show progress and those which do not.

"They're silly benchmarks, a lot of them," said Kristol. "The military situation is better than anyone expected. ... If Bush can just hang on there and beat back the people in Congress who want to snatch defeat out of the jaws of possible success ... I think we're going to win this war."

A Fox host then cited a new report that "al Qaeda ... is running from Iraq, apparently to Pakistan" and asked "did this report come out on purpose so that we will have the right ... to go after Pakistan now?"

Kristol responded, "I think the president's going to have to take military action there over the next few weeks or months. ... Bush has to disrupt that sanctuary."

"I think, frankly, we won't even tell Musharraf," Kirstol continued. "We'll do what we have to do in Western Pakistan and Musharraf can say, 'Hey, they didn't tell me.'"

  54. Mstessyrue Says:

This administration needs to recognize the war in Iraq is a complete failure and mistake. There are more critical issues that affecting the lives of millions of americans and people world wide that our president is not taking actions against. Now the war has proven to be a failure and is causing more violence, terror and poverty in this world. According to the Borgen Project, it only takes $19 billion dollars annually to eradicate world hunger and poverty. However, our government has already spent more than $450 billion dollars over this fruitless war in Iraq. It is time for the Bush Administration to take a real interest in the lives of the American people as well as people who are in desperate needs around the world. Stop the lies and stop poverty now. Put away the arrogance and put the needs of the people before political gains.

"Such an improvement. Such a success story." -- Comment by Gregor Samsa

From the same story I cited earlier:
June’s figures were the lowest monthly tally this year.

...the figures suggest a downward trend, which may be due to U.S. military pressure on insurgents in Baghdad and the surrounding areas.

The commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, Maj. Gen. Joseph F. Fil, Jr., told reporters on Friday that American and Iraqi security forcesnow control nearly half of the 474 neighborhoods in Baghdad — up from 19 percent in April.
    --------
That's a story of improvement. The count isn't going to go to 0 in a month. In fact, it's not 0 in Chicago or DC....far from it.

"Twisting the facts"? The 1,200 deaths per month figure is right there, in the link you provided.

Talking about facts, the fact that Iraqis are dying at a clip of 1,200 per month (or more, according to the article) is already a sign that the strategy, overall, has failed.

Weren't the US troops going to be "greeted as liberators"? Wasn't the occupation supposed to end a tyrannical regime that tortured and killed Iraqis by the thousands?

Iraqis are still being tortured, bombed, maimed, and killed. Hardly a success story.

If so - why was Cheney concerned that Saddam was working with Niger to get fissionable material if it was already in Iraq?

    2. Are you saying that the enemy is dumb enough to IMPORT fissionable material that they may have stolen from somewhere within the Former Soviet Union INTO Iraq - one of the hottest war zones on Earth and right under the nose of the U.S. Military?

    Why would they do that?

    That would be stupid.

Why not take it to the Pakistan/Afghanistan border where they are relatively (unfortunately because of our shift to Iraq in 2003) unbothered?

    3. Are you saying that all of the IED makers in Iraq are also proficient in building nuclear bombs from scratch? And that they all have the proper documentation to board a flight to the U.S. and get through customs without hassle?

How does an Iraqi IED maker get fissionable material?

How does he turn it into a nuclear bomb?

How does he get himself from there to here?

How does he get the nuclear bomb from there to here?

Do you know how hard it is to detonate a proper nuke?

  166. Probus Says:

Snow is wrong. Iraq is already destabilized. Removing troops would be an improvement. We have already lost influence in the Middle East. Our presence in Iraq is making us less safe. Our presence is used as a recruiting tool by the insurgents. We are seen as invaders and occupiers instead of liberators. Bush has been wrong about all his predictions in connection to this war. He has no credibility. If Snow says that the region will be destabilized, the opposite is probably true because they have been wrong so often.

More and more people are dying because of the civil war in Iraq. Our only option is to leave. Snow is once again playing the fear card. This rationale is false. They use fear when it helps politically, but ignore real warnings like the latest NIE report when it is politically expedient to do so. I wish Snow and Bush would address the hike in US deaths in Iraq. The surge has clearly failed. That is why the Joint Chiefs of Staff came out against the surge. That is why Gen. Casey was replaced because he disagreed with Bush.

    2005 WorldNetDaily.com

Al-Qaida has obtained at least 40 nuclear weapons from the former Soviet Union – including suitcase nukes, nuclear mines, artillery shells and even some missile warheads. In addition, documents captured in Afghanistan show al-Qaida had plans to assemble its own nuclear weapons with fissile material it purchased on the black market.

As the level of argument from the Bush Gang degrades in intelligence you will see more and more Republicans running for re-election start running away from questions about Iraq.

Bush is trying to deal with the American Public using third-grade rhetoric. The current round of polls indicate the Public is not buying it. Even if you assume the Bush Gang is evil and operating in their own self-interest, you would expect them to use more sophisticated techniques to keep from getting thrown out of office.

How in the world can Bush further the interests of this country if he uses these kinds of arguments when dealing with Russia or Europe. I can only imagine how he does when he or members of his Gang have to work out negotiations with other countries on issues like trade or commerce.

If I were a conservative and supported everything Bush is doing in Iraq I would call for his removal from office just based on how badly he is attempting to argue for his position. The image he presents to the rest of the world must lead them to see the U.S. as a nation of shambling morons.

This is incorrect. Casey was replaced in January, when the surge strategy was announced, not later, after it “failed” (Probus’ word).

Both the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Casey came out against the surge before it was implemented. I am aware that Casey was replaced before the surge failed. Petraeus took his place. Yes, the surge has failed.

Yes, I hereby apologize for the year of my birth. Sorry, I should have thought it through in advance.

I came of age after Vietnam, when even registration for the draft had been done away with. I guess that disqualifies me from an opinion on the conduct of foreign affairs.

Come to think of it, I guess Bill Clinton, who "escaped" to Oxford during Vietname and led anti-war protests from afar, should be disqualified also.

It appears as though several posters are more interested in debating about me than about Iraq. Is that because you have nothing to say on Iraq? I found it interesting how the original article headlined increasing violence there, which flies in the face of the facts I posted.

And where does Snow get this information? From a mentally ill prisoner whom the CIA and FBI ruled as untrustworthy. From a past TP post referencing an excerpt from Ron Suskind's book, "The One Percent Doctrine":

Bush “was fixated on how to get Zubaydah to tell us the truth,” Suskind writes, and he asked one briefer, “Do some of these harsh methods really work?”

Interrogators did their best to find out, Suskind reports. They strapped Abu Zubaydah to a water-board, which reproduces the agony of drowning. They threatened him with certain death. They withheld medication. They bombarded him with deafening noise and harsh lights, depriving him of sleep.

Under that duress, he began to speak of plots of every variety — against shopping malls, banks, supermarkets, water systems, nuclear plants, apartment buildings, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty. With each new tale, “thousands of uniformed men and women raced in a panic to each…target.” And so, Suskind writes, “the United States would torture a mentally disturbed man and then leap, screaming, at every word he uttered.”

And at the time, every Repub squealed that Clinton would kill our troops.

And Bush has killed 3600 of our troops.

  252. Probus Says:

Bush let bin Laden go at Tora Bora. He didn't send reinforcements to our troops who were ready to take him out. Finding and killing bin Laden should have been the number one priority for Bush. Instead he took his eye of the ball. He outsourced the job to locals in Afghanistan and bin Laden got away. Now al Qaeda is back to its full strength since before 9-11. This is Bush's fault. Bush shut down the CIA unit that was supposed to hunt down bin Laden. Instead he moved resources from Afghanistan to Iraq which has nothing to do with 9-11 or bin Laden. We are less safe because of his actions. He is accountable to the American people.

Haven't you heard? The terrorists want to take away our freedom to go to Sears and buy t-shirts and stuff.

Seriously...the terrorists "fighting us over there" are doing nothing to take away our freedoms here in America. People are still taking vacations, still having fireworks and cookouts on the 4th of July, still going shopping when and where they please, still buying cars, still mowing the lawn, still going deer hunting, still watching 340 channels on DirecTV, still going to outdoor concerts, etc. despite the attacks on 9/11 and despite the alleged plots to attack that have been discovered and stopped.

Snow and everyone else in this administration can go fk themselves each time they tell us the terrorists hate us for our freedoms.

The terrorists would be over here, coming across our still unprotected borders, and we'd be seeing many more attacks, or plans for attacks broken up.

That's a good boy Mr Pee. Admitting your failures is the first step (of 12).

  274. WC Says:

Hey Tony! Remember these blasts from the past???

Secretary of State Colin Powell emphatically said yesterday that if the incoming Iraqi interim government ordered the departure of foreign troops after June 30, they would pack up without protest, but emphasized he doubted such a request would be made.

    -----

… “If the provisional government asks us to leave, we will leave,” Bremer said, referring to an Iraqi administration due to take power June 30. “I don’t think that will happen, but obviously we don’t stay in countries where we’re not welcome.”

    -----

Bush Said He Would Withdraw U.S. Forces If The Iraqis Asked

On Monday, Iraqi political leaders called on the U.S. to set a timetable for withdrawal. In January, President Bush said that if asked by the Iraqis, U.S. forces would leave the country:

President Bush said in an interview on Thursday that he would withdraw American forces from Iraq if the new government that is elected on Sunday asked him to do so, but that he expected Iraq’s first democratically elected leaders would want the troops to remain as helpers, not as occupiers.

    -------------

What else was it that Bush said? Oh yeah...that the generals on the ground in Iraq would determine when we could leave Iraq.

So which is it, Mr. President? Our generals get to decide, or members of the Iraqi government? Can you please make up your fkn mind?

    Comment by Keith G — July 13, 2007 @ 12:08 am

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, Keith, in the real world, explanations of actions and conflicts aren't that simple.

We, in the respectable scientific community, tend not to use the word "cause" with the vulgar sense in which it is used in the market-place.

So yes, if you please, you may, of course, say whatever you like.

  280. Gregor Samsa Says:

It's very rich when the Bush supporters come here accusing anyone of being "intellectually bankrupt" or "twisting the facts".

This is the crowd that supports an invasion and occupation launched on false premises ("we know where they are...", "we will be greeted as liberators", etc.), and that still continues to support the Bush strategy even though it's obvious to its own architects that is is a complete failure.

Anybody who considers 4million displaced, and about half a million "excess death" to be a success is morally bankrupt and twisting completely ignoring the facts.

Tang su do? Korean? Almost everything my friend showed me in Tai Kwon Do was gold. I've seen some demos w/ canes and it was pretty cool stuff. Ever seen a man named Wally Jay demonstrate? Professor Jay, as he was called, is dead now but his students still teach his stuff - Small circle Jiujitsu. Extremely impressive. He'd get ahold of someone by one finger and they'd be flopping around on the mats like a fish out of water.

Man, this is bringing back memories. I told ya Mr. P would split. I'd love to see your daughter tie his sorry a** in a knot for him.

Sounds nasty (what you describe…). What was the injury (if it’s okay to ask…)?

My ankle and lower leg were shattered, right leg, I have titanium screws holding all the bones below the knee together, except for the foot bones. When it first happened, they thought they would have to amputate, thank goodness they didn't.

Sometimes those military doctors will cure a hangnail by taking off at the knee =)

    What style do you do?
Comment by The Republic of Stupidity

tang su do, hapkido, and my first martial art my father made me take was Judo/jujitsu, not the brazilian type that is so popular now days, Wally Jay's style ( small circle Jujitsu )
I tried shaolin and wing chung, while station at Fort Bragg but didn't stick with those. Was deployed too may times.

Yes, Korean, the same style Chuck Norris does.
It is real close to okinowan shotakan in the forms, slight variations

Ah, so you know who Wally Jay was! Gorgeous technique. You sound like a right educated man, sir! Pleased to make your acquaintance. I've heard that judo is good for kids because they like the tumbling and motion right off the bat.

Sounds like a hideous wound you had there. Glad to hear you kept the leg and recovered to the degree you did. I think the whole world would be a safer, saner place if everyone studied martial arts.

Yeah, I just did the same thing. Cracked me up too!

Chuck Norris was/is a pretty tough son of a gun. I remember watching one episode of "Texas Ranger" when he first met his black sidekick. He and the black guy decided to play a little pattycake, as we used to call it. Chuck just kept kicking the guy on the thigh until he couldn't move.

Yes, it's staged, but I could see Chuck's point. How do you deal w/ that?
My Tai Kwon Do friend, back when I first met him, once told me, "I can hit you 50 times on the shoulder and you can't block one punch..."

And I'm like, "Bring it on, dude..." I managed to catch im once, AFTER he landed the punch, on his way out. Once in fifty times. Talk about humbling.

  367. Wayne Says:

Yeah that's the first thing they teach, how to fall, roll and tumble, before you ever learn your first throw, keeps you from getting injured. Then they start on being taken down, leg sweep first, then moving into more advanced flips and throws.

Never studied judo. Wish I had. One of my friends had a black belt in judo, a black belt in karate, and THEN, got seriously into preying mantis (Brendan Lai). He was one scary dude even in his 60's, but I liked him a lot.

I'd like to get into wrist locks... how to immoblize someone so they just have to go along w/ the agenda, and no one gets hurt, unless they're dumb... :-)!!!

My First Tang Su do instructor a Mr. Lawler was 75 years old and could wipe the floor with anyone in the school.
    He moved like liquid lightning
He made us do backhand techniques with a sawed off broomstick under our arm pits, if it hit the floor when we did a backfist to the bag we had to so 50 pushups =)

I have never sparred anyone that wasn't in that school that can block my backfist.

it is all in the forms ;)

The secret is to see past the obvious.
Every strike is also a blow, every blow is also a strike, and hidden within are the locks and throws.

The best Seminar I ever went to that unlocked all that for me was with George Dilman, the master of the one touch knockout.
I went to about 6 of his seminars, he taught how to learn and see the real secrets behind kata
Really awsome stuff, I think he has a few books out on it as well.

Never heard of George Dilman. I've seen, and had, one-inch punches demonstrated on me (phonebook on the shoulder and get ready to fly!!!). Is that what the one-touch knockout is?

    it teaches you speed.

you must strike the bag and then pull back your arm to the staring position catching the sticks , not letting it fall far enough that it hits the floor.
When you do the technique correctly your arm is as fast as a bullwhip, the power of the backfist is in the snap and the control of the depth of the strike.
When you get it right you can blow out candles with the wind created by the backfist. =)
The power of the blow is amazing as well, boards break like kindling and it looks like you just tapped it with your knuckles

Okay... sounds good to me! I just went and Googled Mr Dillman. He had a little bit of video demonstrating pressure-point technique. PFC! (Pretty F*cking Cool!!!) I had heard bits and pieces about that over the years, but that was the first time I had seen it like that. Extremeley interesting stuff - the Vulcan nerve pinch!

If you have a minute, Google "Cheuk Fung". He was my main teacher (e chuan and tai chi). An incredibly fast, powerful puncher and a devoutly spiritual man. Still one of my favorite people I've met in this lifetime.

I have to go to bed, Wayne. I've seen your posts often of late. If you come back to TP, I'm sure we'll cross paths again. Nice meeting you!

Pressure points, he claims to be able to know out someone by hitting the right pressure point, I have seen him do it and work, sometimes it didn't, probably differnt physialogy with the subject.

    found his web site
    http://www.dillman.com/

He has his critcs as well, especially on the pressure point theories hehe
I prefer a good solid hit if I go for a knockout =)

His theories on the forms having locks and throws works, i can say from personal experience.

  390. missmolly Says:

Same old tired scare tactics, I see. You'd think that somebody in that WH would have a LITTLE creativity and come up with something new.

    1. What's stopping terrorists from attacking our shopping malls (or bridges, or power plants, or skyscrapers) now? Do you really think they're sitting around in a sleeper cell saying, "gee, we would really like to blow up the Sears Tower and kill a couple of thousand people in one fell swoop -- but gosh-darnit, we need to go pick off American soldiers one by one in Iraq first!" Does anyone REALLY think that we are preventing terrorist attacks here by fighting them there?

    2. Are we supposed to believe that Iraq is the keystone of the entire world? First -- Iraq is already pretty destabilized, and our continuing presence is doing nothing to help (true -- we were the ones who destabilized it, but we need to find a non-military way to try to fix it since the military way isn't working). Second -- a destabilized nation can affect neighboring nations, but to suggest it will spread from one continent to the next until this "destabilization" reaches our shopping malls (wonder what a destabilized shopping mall looks like?) is really overreaching. Get a grip, neocons. We swallowed this whole bill of goods during the Cold War -- back then it was called the "Domino Theory".

Nope -- this horse is dead. Whip it all you want, but it's not going to get up and gallop for you again.

Quite a lot of things, actually. In fact, pretty much everything except PUBLIC OPINION can be determined more effectively by methods other than a PUBLIC OPINION poll. But when you want to gauge PUBLIC OPINION about something, a poll is indeed the way to go.

Sorry the polls aren't going the way you'd like. Maybe you should try attacking the methodology or the math or some other ridiculous detail so you don't have to face the truth about how the country and the world views this administration.

In addition, what the Snowjob and his Master won't say, is that Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia was nowhere to be seen before Dubbya invaded Iraq. The morons make no mention of the fact that Iraqa is in the throes of a civil war: Sunnis are battling Shiites, Kurds are battling Arabs, tribal chiefs among the same ethnicity are battling each other...

of any Western-type civilization or nation; in fact, they are by definition in opposition to it. Or, to be real clear, by Western standards Muslims are the fecal matter of the human race and must be kept out of our countries. By the same standard, we should not be interfering in any way within their countries-they're free to perform all the cliterectomies they wish within their own lands. It's the idiotic and dangerous notion that 'we're all the same, and everybody's equal' that leads to idiocies like the Iraq fiasco and proponents of said nonsense are a bigger threat to the US & the West than Bin Laden,etc.-the greatest enemies are within.

BTW, Tracy is still on another thread, ranting at me because I called his admitted reason ("I didn't want to be away from my wife and kids for an extended period of time.") for not being in the war he so much supports "lame." He's calling me a "coward" for not volunteering for the military in peacetime right out of high school, though he has never been in the military himself.
