ThinkFast: July 12, 2007

haydenciaf.jpg

Last November, CIA Director Michael Hayden told the Iraq Study Group in a private briefing that the “inability of the [Iraqi] government to govern seems irreversible.” In the eight months since, “neither Hayden nor any other high-ranking administration official has publicly described the Iraqi government in the uniformly negative terms that the CIA director used in his closed-door briefing.”

“A previously undisclosed Army investigation into an audacious January attack in Karbala that killed five U.S. soldiers concludes that Iraqi police working alongside American troops colluded with insurgents.”

“Undercover Congressional investigators set up a bogus company and obtained a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in March that would have allowed them to buy the radioactive materials needed for a so-called dirty bomb,” demonstrating once again that the security measures “to prevent radioactive materials from getting into the wrong hands are insufficient.”

If “current greenhouse gas emission patterns worldwide continue unabated,” summers in the Northeast could be six to 14 degrees warmer and “cities such as Boston, Atlantic City and New York would be regularly subject to disastrous flooding,” according to a new report.

Some conservatives are rallying behind a weak amendment offered by Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO) to implement the Iraq Study Group recommendations, rather than set a deadline for withdrawal. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) derided the proposal as having “less teeth than a toothless tiger. It won’t change one thing the president does.”

The White House is resisting a congressional effort to commission “independent assessments to rival the upcoming Sept. 15 reports by Gen. David H. Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker.” If you had a serious illness, you would want a second opinion. We are at war. You want to have the best minds looking at a problem,” said Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-VA).

For thousands of Gulf Coast evacuees, “going home to New Orleans has become a vague and receding dream. Living in bleak circumstances, they cannot afford to go back, or have nothing to go back to. Over the two years since Hurricane Katrina hit, the shock of evacuation has hardened into the grim limbo of exile. ‘We in storage,’ said Ann Picard, 49, … ‘We just in storage.‘”

Yesterday, former White House political director Sara Taylor used a letter from White House counsel Fred Fielding barring her from speaking about certain White House activities “like a shield.” She “invoked Fielding’s name 24 times” and mentioned the letter 35 times: “I have a very clear letter from Mr. Fielding. … Again, I have a letter.”

“The political price of sticking by an embattled Alberto Gonzales is getting higher for President Bush.” The Wall Street Journal notes new intelligence laws have not been passed because lawmakers believe Gonzales “misled them about a separate surveillance program.” Also, “Gonzales was sidelined during the recent immigration debate,” and there has been little movement to replace a half-dozen senior Justice Department officials, some of whom need Senate confirmation.

And finally: The ladies who run the exclusive snack bar for the Democratic members of the House have been praised by Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) for “their ability to deal with ’some 200 prima donnas.’” For example, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) “quietly holds up one finger or two, depending on how many slices of bread he wants with his peanut butter. ‘You never close the bread,’ notes one of the ladies.” “We know what kind of day it’s going to be by the first order,” explained Ella Louise Terry.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Would you like to see Harriet Miers, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove being led to jail by the Capitol Hill Police and the House’s Sargeant at Arms? Would Friday be good for you?

    Two Words: INHERENT CONTEMPT

Inherent Contempt is a little used, little known tool that the House or Senate can use. It requries only a majority…which we should easily have in the House. Under the inherent contempt power, the individual is brought before the House or Senate by the Sergeant-at-Arms, tried at the bar of the body, and can be IMPRISONED. The purpose of the imprisonment may be punitive or coercive, and can be indefinite. The Inherent Contempt power is recognized by the Supreme Court as Constitutional.

Regular Contempt charges simply won’t work. The U.S. attorney is in Bush’s pocket. Most likely he won’t pursue it.

You need to BOMBARD Pelosi and Conyers and tell them to pursue the new “I” word = Inherent Contempt.

This may be our last and final attempt at justice.

Harriet Miers needs to be first. She refuses to even appear to testify today! This is UN-acceptable. Lets try Inherent Contempt on her first. Lets watch her cry as they Capitol Police haul her ass to jail. Let Cheney and Rove watch knowing they’re next.

So Bush is ordering Harriet Miers to ignore Congress’ subpoena. Wow. The arrogance of this incarnation of the executive branch is amazing.

I’m waiting for the executive order that dissolves Congress… just cause he felt like it.

  4. bobcat_grad says:

Anyone see Chertoff of the Today show this morning telling us all that we should be really, really scared because Al Queda is stronger than ever?

Ahhh… so that’s what 5 years of war, $600 billion, and close to 4,000 dead US soldiers gets us.

“In the eight months since, “neither Hayden nor any other high-ranking administration official has publicly described the Iraqi government in the uniformly negative terms that the CIA director used in his closed-door briefing.”

They haven’t said it “publicly” but I’m willing to bet they have said it privately. It’s obvious to anyone with half a brain that our hand picked Iraqi government is not capable of ruling that country.

We all need to be calling and writing our representatives for many things and one of them is to let them know that we will not tolerate another cave to Bush. It’s time that the Democrats stand up to the Bush Crime Family, even if it results in filibuster after filibuster. We also need to expose the Lemming Republics for the obstructionists that they are.

  6. Ben Dover says:

#4. Dont be surprised if King George does that. Its gone beyond incomprehensible how Bush, who campaigned in 2000 on a platform of returning “honor and dignity to the White House” has totally subverted the rule of law in the country. Well rule of law when it comes to his cronies in the White House. I am starting to think there may not be a democracy left for an adult to manage on January 20, 2009, when this pustule finally leaves office.

Bush’s Bizarro world was at it’s best yesterday, with Sara Taylor looking like the dumb shit she is.

Larry, I like your suggestion above. I have never heard of Inherent Contempt, but I do know my contempt for this administration is inherent.

It was nice to see Michael Moore hand Wolf Blitzer his ass for about 5 minutes, just wish I could have added some things to Wolf myself.

A 2nd opinion in September is a great idea! Bush ignored his Generals for a full 4 years before KKKarl told him that was his best defense for an illegal invasion. Now, Patraeus walks on water. But…they still don’t want an independent opinion; that may conflict with bizarro world.

Ok Harry. We will settle for nothing less than legislation to bring our troops home NOW. Don’t let the Republics hide behind toothless legislation so they can tell their constituents that they stood up to Bush. I’m willing to bet that the Lemming Republics got an earful when they went home recently.

Give em hell Harry. Don’t blink and don’t back down again.

    Healthcare Debate Is Heating Up!
    Thursday 12th of July 2007
    by Jay Randal

The membership of the Congress can try to hide their heads in hills of sand hoping the heathcare debate will go away, and Michael Moore’s movie Sicko to vanish, but this important issue is heating up for 2008 election.

Americans are not going to accept the status-quo, nor to continue to allow insurance industry to run healthcare in US, so they demand change in corrupt system.

Any candidate who advocates keeping the insurance fraud, or playing with it to try to make it better, will be rejected by voters in upcoming primary elections.

Single-Payer system like Canada is what Americans desire, not a bogus plan for everybody to be forced to purchase insurance, nor idea to help just a few poor.

The health insurance industry exists to make profits, by denying medical care to people who need care the most, so nothing can be done to stop them from greed.

Members of Congress get excellent care for their $35 dollars a month, but most Americans get lousy care!

(Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)

  14. Katie says:

“Larry, I like your suggestion above. I have never heard of Inherent Contempt, but I do know my contempt for this administration is inherent.”

Go look up Inherent Contempt at the Wikipedia site. It’s perfect. All it needs is a simple majority so the House can find them both in Inherent Contempt of Congress and then they will be arrested by the Sargent at Arms. What I wouldn’t give to see that happen. The House will have a “mini” trial and if they find them guilty of Contempt (a no brainer), then they will go straight to jail. That will certainly set an example for all of Bush’s reluctant witnesses!

  15. Larry from C says:

#9 Zimzone…I just heard about it yesterday. Did a little research. Its for real. The Congress has the power of Inherent Contempt.

You damn well know the Republicans woud use it. Can you imagine how they Republicans would delight at leading Bill Clinton out of the Oval Office in handcuffs accompanied by the police.

This is the last remaining option. Regular Contempt charges will be ignored by the U.S. Attorney. Or Bush will just pardon Harriet Miers from the contempt charges. Inherent Contempt is different.

We need to educate all progressives/independents/democrats about Inherent Contempt. I called all my reps. today. Everyone else needs to also. Keep calling.

    listen up:

our own department of energy has already concluded that dirty bombs are not effective at in the way we’ve been misled to believe. they are only effective as an agent of fear.

we need to stop perpetuating the myth of the dirty bomb, and actually inform ourselves. this AAAAHHH DIRTY BOMB! story line is only effective for terrorists who want to sow terror and our negligent government who don’t seem to want to inform the public of the non-threat.

one wonders why the current government wouldn’t have already taken steps to inform the public…

the truth is that if the public were properly informed of the extremely low probably of irradiation from a dirty bomb (too much dispersion of low grade radioactive materials) and the more likely death and injury from the ensuing panic, we’d be much better off.

i think tp shouldn’t ever mention dirty bombs without including the very helpful and important information that the public should know: dirty bombs are not going to render several city blocks uninhabitable for decades, as we have been frequently misled.

from the nuclear regulatory commission’s factsheet on dirty bombs:

A dirty bomb is not a “Weapon of Mass Destruction” but a “Weapon of Mass Disruption,” where contamination and anxiety are the terrorists’ major objectives.

The karbala incident is the lynchpin linking Iran to insurgents that the administration has been looking for. I was amazed by CNN’s coverage, with Barbara Starr reporting, on the return of those soldiers remains to the US. It was the first time and quite remarkably inconsistent with the administrations allowance of coverage of those kind of military procedures in my mind.To this day I have not seen any other instant coverage of remains being returned in such a high profile and conspicuous manner.

  25. Marcus Aurelius says:

Two items, above, the one regarding the inability of the [Iraqi] government to govern and the other regarding Iraqi police colluding with insurgents, serve as valuable factoids in the war against the war.

The stories point out some glaring facts: That his “war” is unwinnable and that the Bush administration knows it. They are evidence of a continuing campaign of misinformation fed to the public as well as the willingness of the 26 percenters to eat it up and regurgitate it. While the right flings terms like “defeatist” and “surrender monkeys”, they decieve themselves intellectually by choosing to ignore the facts and to believe the lies.

These kinds of stories need to be put into faces of every Neocon/Conservative/Republican here (I’d like to grab them by the throats and make sure they heard what I was saying before letting them go).

The ultimate result of the invasion and occupation of Iraq is a foregone conclusion. We never had a goal (other than to loot the US treasury), we never had a strategy, the country is out of conrtol, and there’s not a damn thing we can do about it.

Surrender? To whom? Defeat? There can only be “defeat” if you can define “victory”.

Hey trolls: This is costing us $12 Billion a month (someone, somewhere is getting very wealthy), and it’s out of freekin’ control. How long do y’all think we should go on?

  26. Larry from C says:

#22 midwestblue….Yes, Condi was subpoenaed long ago. But she’s an arrogant constitution-hating neo-con. She thinks she’s above the law.

Every day another neo-con spits on the Constitution by ignoring subpoenas and not testifying. Are the Democrats going to accept this? It has come to a head. Neo-cons are lawbreakers. Lawbreakers must go to jail. If they ignore subpoenas they MUST BE CHARGED WITH INHERENT CONTEMPT. Its the only remaining option.

I’ve been saying that to anyone who says they support Bush’s plan for Iraq for the past three years. Their typical reponse? A blank stare.

  30. Larry from C says:

    #28 Marcus Aurelius…

    Wikipedia has more info:

    Inherent contempt

Under this process, the procedure for holding a person in contempt involves only the chamber concerned. Following a contempt citation, the person cited for contempt is arrested by the Sergeant-at-Arms for the House or Senate, brought to the floor of the chamber, held to answer charges by the presiding officer, and then subject to punishment that the House may dictate (usually imprisonment for punishment reasons, imprisonment for coercive effect, or release from the contempt citation.)

Concerned with the time-consuming nature of a contempt proceeding and the inability to extend punishment further than the session of the Congress concerned (under Supreme Court rulings), Congress created a statutory process in 1857. While Congress retains its “inherent contempt” authority and may exercise it at any time, this inherent contempt process was last used by the Senate in 1934, against the Postmaster-General. After a one-week trial in the Senate floor (presided by the Vice-President of the United States, acting as Senate President), the Postmaster-General was found guilty and sentenced to 10 days imprisonment.

The Postmaster General had filed a petition of Habeas Corpus in federal courts to overturn his arrest, but after litigation, the US Supreme Court ruled that Congress had acted constitutionally, and denied the petition in the case Jurney v. MacCracken

Just tried to call Rep. Conyers. I couldn’t leave a message because the recording said his mailbox was full.

    Nice work, everyone!!!!

It seems that Bush administration officials don’t speak up until after they leave office. By then it is too late for their candor to be of any use. Hayden and other officials must speak out now to the media. They are in a position to effect change from the inside and they should take steps to do so. They owe it to the troops.

If Iraqi police are helping the insurgents kill our troops then why are our troops there in the first place helping to train them? Our troops are sometimes stationed inside the police stations. In light of this information that is a very unsafe practice. Our troops should be allowed to return to the Green zone like the used to before the surge. Why are we helping the Iraqi police if they are working against our troops?

The ISG report is of no use if the recommendations are not implemented with a date to remove all combat forces out of Iraq by a certain time. Any bill in connection to this war must include a deadline to get all troops out. The date must be binding. I am glad that Reid doesn’t think it goes far enough. Obviously it doesn’t. No wonder the conservatives support it.

Taylor is clearly trying to hide her role and the role of Rove and Bush in the US attorney firings. Her testimony gives the impression that they have something to hide. If Bush had no conversations in connection to the firing he can’t obviously claim executive privilege.
