After Vitter, DeMint worried he could ‘be next.’

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) is not surprised by revelations that Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) “patronized brothels and call girls.” In an interview with Capitol News Connection radio service, DeMint said, “I think all of us have to look at it and say, ‘We can be next. … This can be a very lonely and isolating place.’ I’m fairly surprised at how little it does happen.”

DeMint could ‘be next’ to be caught patronizing prostitutes.

You use like a 2 word quote, to make it sound like someone said something they didn’t. DeMint didn’t say he could be next, he said “We can be next.” Sure, “We” includes “him”, but the headline is still dishonest.

DeMint could ‘be next’ to be caught patronizing prostitutes.

TP put his full quote in the quick blog under the title. And the title is not misleading at all. DeMint is the one talking, indicating “we could be next” which includes him, and he’s IMPLYING that he is guilty or has had thoughts of doing that as well, otherwise he wouldn’t have said it.

It’s only a dishonest headline if you don’t bother thinking and/or reading the actual article.

  8. Republicans Can't Govern. says:

It has nothing to do with the “grace of God” or “pride.” It has everything to do with illegally paying for sex from a prostitute.

I think Jake is right. Actually, the full text of Proverbs 16:18 is “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”

I think that has numerous applications for the supposed leaders of our national government. In particular, it was pride that drove GDumbya into Iraq and we are all suffering from that destruction. His haughty spirit prevents him from admitting to mistakes. He will fall — as will so many from the haughty right wing. I just hope that they don’t take all of us down with them when it happens.

You are mistaken in this case.
DeMint is indeed saying that any one of them could be next, because D.C. is a lonely place, and the clear implication is that colleagues take solace wherever they can.
I am assuming that he knows how widespread is the practice of using prostitutes.
All of this is bad enough, but when it is shown that the holier-than-thou crowd are hypocrites to the extreme in their condemnation of the behavior of others, it is important to inform the public of their masquerade.

  18. Yikes says:

Along the same lines as Mr. “If you did nothing wrong then what are you worried about” Bush and his stonewalling on any and all investigations.

If your hand was never in the cookie jar then you shouldn’t be too worried. DeMint looks like he is still licking his fingers and he knows of others that didn’t clean up the crumbs.

  19. Jake says:

Just for the record, using prostitutes for sex should be legalized. This country is so hung up on who “gets it”. Why don’t we all just grow up?

  23. Republicans Can't Govern. says:

  26. slimpickins says:

This is a very dissapointing and sad article from you guys. I can only hope that you are basing this off more information than the flimsy article that you have linked to. Otherwise, you actions are really pathetic.

That said, I am sure there is plenty of other republican corruption to expose, so stick to the facts!

Congressmen on all sides should be held to a higher standard, not just the Reps because they preach “family values.” You don’t hear Dems saying they don’t believe in family values. They just have a different definition.
For those who argue it’s no big deal, it shouldn’t be illegal anyway, you’re right, it shouldn’t be illegal. But it is, and any Congressmen knows that and knows it’s wrong.

  35. Art says:

All the republicans have to do is to go to the white house and say “Pardon me.” just like Scooter Libby.

  36. missmolly says:

C’mon, TP — there’s enough REAL corruption and wrongdoing out there to be outraged about. And you usually do a great job of bringing it to our attention.

But this? This is a headline deliberately sensationalized. You don’t need to stoop to this level. At least DeMint is honest enough to admit that human beings have failings (which is kind of refreshing, when you compare it to the usual “holier than thou” pontificating we get from politicians all too often). I didn’t interpret this as a personal admission of guilt on his part.

And just my two cents? I really don’t CARE about a politician’s sex life (I might care slightly if he lies about it, but not much) — unless it’s forced without consent or involves minors. I care far more about the war in Iraq, political pandering to large corporations and fatcat lobbyists, health care, trampling of the Constitution, tax cuts for the rich, unemployment, and the hijacking of the government.

  37. unbelievable says:

Looks like some cons are pretending to be TP regulars (except that I’m a regular and I’ve never heard of them before) so that they can criticize.

Look, you don’t say ‘we’ unless it includes YOU, (you would have instead said ‘they’, and excluded yourself from implication), so the article is not misleading. If anything, I’m guessing it was a slip, and he didn’t realize he was ratting on himself…

  40. pablo says:

#32 – you don’t seem to get it. i have no problem with “relations between consenting adults”. i have a problem w/ a politician trying to impeach a president for having no ‘moral values’ as he, himself, is schtupping a hooker or a politician trying to keep two same-sex people from getting married by saying we need to preserve the “sanctitiy of marriage” as he (or she) is ’stepping outside” their own marriage.

  43. MsJoanne says:

The problem I have with prostitution is that if it’s so wrong and all that, why is it legal in some places but not in others? I think it should be legalized and regulated everywhere just as it is in NV, but that’s another story.

I could care less who’s getting screwed as long as it’s not the American people. And all these holier than thou hypocrites who run on the Family Values platform while soliciting prostitutes (YAWN), engage in homosexual situations while denouncing it (another YAWN, unless you show more hypocracy by being rabidly anti-gay while doing the bone dance), committing sexual attacks on children (mostly GOP thugs and there is NO justification for that).

When you put it all together, everything this administration does and everything the GOP lawmakers do – they’re not fit for running in place let alone running for office.

Who cares about their sex lives? Not I. What I DO care about is that these hypocrits hold any elected office. Three cheers for Larry Flynt, a TRUE Patriot, a TRUE American. He is exposing these liars for what they are, bible thumping hypocritical LIARS who use god and the church to hide their sickening duplicities. Every single Rethug should be voted OUT of office in 2008. NONE of them can tell the truth, NOT ONE of them has any decency or honesty. These neocon liars have destroyed the GOP. I hope they do NOT impeach, I hope they wait until they are out of office and THEN charge them all for their crimes against humanity. Then we need to weed out ALL the sicko neocons that have been placed in positions of importance by these partisan hacks. It is sickening how much damage these creeps have destroyed America with their sick pseudo Christian ideals. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, remove ALL fundamentalists from any office they now hold. Start with all of the people who have jobs in the Justice Dept. due to Monica Goodling and her cohorts, then go through every agency and remove them one by one and charge them with the CRIMES they have committed against the Hatch Act.
Not ONE of these criminals should be pardoned and the only way to see to it that they are not is to wait until this idiot of a President is out of office and no longer has the power to pardon all of his criminal associates. 2009, they ALL DO TIME.

“We” are not… “We” are just pointing out that people who impeached Clinton for a consensual and legal sex act with another adult because it was immoral, were doing WORSE at the same time. We don’t care that they were paying to have sex, we care that they are hypocrites – which is really unethical.

What they really need to do is decriminalize all victim less crimes. It’s way past time the US stop imposing moral judgements or limits on our fellow citizens.

In general, I agree with you – but there are probably one or two caveats to that generalization. As far as prostitution – it would need to be regulated so that it doesn’t lead to the spread of diseases, or exploitation of women – especially young women, because then it would create victims… But Nevada and Amsterdam seem to be examples of legalized and regulated prostitution that works.

TP also does NOT have site registration, so more thanone person could use the name of a famous philosopher like Russell, more than once.

What were you working off for the number of times a particular person has posted here ? What have you got a divining rod there chump ?

Better tell Bush to llok out for that next step then. It’s a bit of a drop.

“We”??? You can only speak honestly for “yourself”, GHU. Feeling a need to tell everyone something?

  87. Furious says:

The developments of the last few days have not been kind to the so-called “values voters” of the Republican Party. One after another, paragons of conservative virtue have been going down (so to speak). And making matters worse, they are taking down the top GOP presidential campaigns with them.

    For the details, see:
    “Sex and Drugs Rock Republicans.”

  88. RUCerious says:

IF you two had consensual sex afterwards then well, you are just a couple adults who decided you really dug each other and wanted to do that.

Yeah, and the guy consensually hands over $1,000 for the dinner companionship.

  89. Bertrand Russell says:

For the record, I am a regular. Just because you don’t recognize the name doesn’t mean I’m not. I usually don’t need to repeat what 100 people have already said, so there’s no need to post. Two threads in which I’ve recently posted in are the Signing Statement (Specter being a wank), and the Filibuster on the Webb amendment (and how the media says “failed to pass”, or “the cloture vote failed” instead of calling it a filibuster when the R’s do it).

Seriously, whenever I post a dissenting point of view on a liberal blog, or criticize something they do, I get called a troll. When we start attacking people who disagree on minor issues, we become republicans.

  90. Bertrand Russell says:

By the way, I always use the email address tips@foxnews.com in the hopes that they get spammed. In one of my first posts, someone took this to mean I must be a conservative…anyway, think what you want. Bertrand Russel is my favorite philosopher. He the antithesis of conservative, and I doubt any of them have ever heard of him.

  91. Egreggious says:

I have to agree with Bert that the story didn’t really deliver what the headline seemed to imply in this case. I don’t really think DeMint should be hung out to dry for this comment alone. We can find better reaons to pillory him, I’m sure.

I say Orwellian because there is a concerted campaign to catch the Rethugs in the act.

I did notice Chris Dodd didn’t knock Vitter on Hardball the other day. I am sure he’s on the list too. That, coupled with his waitress sandwich with Teddy Kennedy back in the 80’s should make for fun fodder.

    Comment by God Help Us — July 13, 2007 @ 11:32 am

You obviously didn’t read much Orwell, or else you didn’t digest much of it.

And a Demcoratic Senator shows some class by not knocking an embattled colleague on a chat show, and this is your basis for accusing him of hiring prostitutes?

    Wishful thinking much?

  95. spit take says:

She “claims” she ran a perfectly legal fantasy escort service. Which means you would pay to have some woman “escort” you to dinner a movie and the company party. IF you two had consensual sex afterwards then well, you are just a couple adults who decided you really dug each other and wanted to do that.

    Comment by Tundra — July 13, 2007 @ 11:39 am

What I find fascinating is how the analysis shifts depending on the letter next to the perp’s name.

I’m pretty confident that if the first name revealed had been a (D), Tundra wouldn’t be quite so understanding.

  96. Egreggious says:

Anyone who has not “knocked” Vitter is on the phone list, I just know it!

  97. God Help Us says:

#96 – Dodd has a history. That all I am saying. I can’t imagine that a few Democrats won’t pop up on this list. I am sure the left will then say – who cares like they did when Clinton was President. The truth is you do care or we wouldn’t be talking about it.`

  98. Egreggious says:

All I care about is revealing these “sanctity of marriage” freaks to be the frauds they are.

  99. God Help Us says:

#99 – thanks for admitting you are a fascist.

I am against gay marriage and it has nothing to do with what I do in my bedroom. Some things are just not right. PERIOD. Just because I am a sinner doesn’t mean we should have gay marriage.
Then what’s next – polygamy? Legalized incest?

  100. God Help Us says:

#99 – so what your saying is Vitter doesn’t have civil rights because he’s opposed to gay marriage. You are an awful, hateful person.

  101. toasterhead says:

Consenting adults? Sex between ‘consenting adults’ isn’t ILLEGAL….until $$ changes hands…. what’s wrong, you don’t see a distinction?

    It’s just negotiable affection, that’s all… Sheesh!

  102. margaret says:

Bertrand Russell – love your moniker and am sorry that you were mis-perceived. As you may have noticed the troll situation lately has gone past the infestation stage to a point where Zooey (of all people) had to take a break from the site!

I heard Karen Hughes on NPR last night talking about some of her people patrolling Arab blogs “correcting” mis-characterizations of U.S. actions. I wonder if any of Karen’s people come here to disrupt threads.

We don’t care unless the person is being holier than thou and telling people how to act, then is acting the exact opposite.

It is really that simple. Nothing more, nothing less.

If republicans would just stop pretending to be better than everybody else, then these kinds of issues and stories would go away.

  105. OutSourced says:

Pretty slimey for the party that tried to politically castrate Bill Clinton to whine for sympathy by moaning about how lonely it is in big bad Washington, and how surprising it is that not more Congress Critters pay for sex. I can see how some of them might have to, and I’m not speaking about Sen. Graham or former Speaker Hastert. But how exactly is Washington different from Main Street America in that regard?

De Mint’s whine about it being because of loneliness is hopelessly misleading. It’s about power, ambition and money – the most powerful sex attractants known to humankind – which exude from the street cracks and storm drains in this town, a town, after all, defined by Washington’s monument dominating the Reflecting Pool.

Those in power always think they’re different and that the rules don’t apply to them, as IF none of them had ever read Kipling’s poem and felt it ought to apply to them. Cheney and Bush are just extreme examples. The bigger problem is not sex in or out of wedlock, whether paid for in cash or by credit card, or by way of access to inherited wealth or to Ivy League or Junior League or family connections. It’s predation and hypocrisy. It’s the party of “family values” whose only real value is wanting the power to impose its will and hypocrisy on others.

Average Americans understand temptation, punishment and forgiveness, and the connections that help them maintain communities and more often than not walk a straight line. The connections that help them back onto the path when the stray. It’s just that Washington can’t stop trying to manipulate them for partisan gain. And no one has been more partisan in the last century than George Walker Bush.

That’s interesting. Many of us have thought KKK Rove was paying some of the trolls. Now we learn that Karen Huge (mistake deliberate) may be behind it, too, or solitarily.

  107. J Lewd says:

    Lora:

Anyone who thinks purely Democrat or purely Republican is an unthinking moron. The power of politics is so sleazy that both sides will do anything within their power to control this country. It’s no surprise that there are paid hacks disrupting the flow of discourse on conservative and liberal blogs alike. These zealots will do whatever they’re handlers ask of them, just for the chance to lick the backs of their masters’ hands.

Meanwhile, you and I and the rest of America wish we actually had a represetative government instead of a bunch of powermongers paid by Exxon to wrest the control of government from the people.

  108. ds says:

Interesting that the story about DeMint being the sole Senator holding up the ethics bill for Congress was reiterated just before DeMint expressed his concern that other lonely Senators might be on the madam’s list. Hmm, maybe that’s why he doesn’t want tougher ethics reform in Congress — is he concerned it will snare him??

    ———–

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is standing idle while Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) keeps an unanimously approved ethics bill in limbo. “Mitch McConnell is making a big mistake sitting on his hands,” said Craig Holman, legislative representative for Public Citizen. “Now he’s letting his own rank-and-file undermine his image of authority.”

  109. Gregor Samsa says:

“I think all of us have to look at it and say, ‘We can be next.’ … “

    “We”?

Speak for yourself Mr. DeMint, speak for yourself…

  110. Mike says:

DeMint is from SC. Their state is trash. Their leaders are beyond trash. Sherman should have leveled everything in that state.
