ThinkFast: July 13, 2007»

vitterwave.jpg

Telephone records released by “D.C. madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey indicate she placed calls that were answered by Sen. David Vitter’s Washington phone on five occasions while Vitter was in the House, from 1999 through 2001. “On four of those five days, the House was in session and Vitter participated in every roll call vote.”

At a Senate confirmation hearing yesterday, President Bush’s surgeon general nominee, James Holsinger, was forced to defend views he expressed in a 1991 paper suggesting that homosexuality is abnormal. He argued the paper has been taken out of context and “does not represent where I am today…who I am today,” Holsinger said. “But he did not spell out his current views, and the controversy has lingered.”

“In an unusual expression of frustration, the judge who sentenced former White House aide I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby to 30 months in jail, only to see the sentence commuted by President Bush, said he was ‘perplexed’ by the act of clemency.”

“Since 2001, more than 22,000 servicemen and women from all branches of the military have been separated under the personality disorder discharge.” ABC News explains, “This diagnosis means the personality disorder existed before military service, and therefore medical care and disability payments are not the military’s responsibility.”

The New York Times challenges Bush’s fear-mongering over al Qaeda in Iraq. “The militant group is in many respects an Iraqi phenomenon. They believe the membership of the group is overwhelmingly Iraqi. Its financing is derived largely indigenously from kidnappings and other criminal activities.”

“More U.S. children breathe air and drink water that is polluted, more are living in crowded, costly housing that strains the family budget and more babies are being born at low birth weights that threaten their survival and set them up for problems down the road.”

“The popularity of the morning-after pill Plan B has surged in the year since the federal government approved the sale of the controversial emergency contraceptive without a prescription. … The sharp rise was hailed by women’s health and family-planning advocates, who say it illustrates the value of easing access to birth control to help prevent unwanted pregnancies.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is standing idle while Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) keeps an unanimously approved ethics bill in limbo. “Mitch McConnell is making a big mistake sitting on his hands,” said Craig Holman, legislative representative for Public Citizen. “Now he’s letting his own rank-and-file undermine his image of authority.”

And finally: Airport screeners took away Rep. Tom Price’s (R-GA) mustache. TSA would now allow the congressman to take his “mustache trimmer on a plane, forcing him to use an electric version. But he wasn’t used to that gadget, and he quickly found himself in the vicious cycle of trimming each end of the ’stache in an effort to even it out. Before he knew it, there was not enough left to salvage. ‘It was TSA,’ Price repeated. ‘That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.’”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

HAHA I can see it now, the Mexicans will soon be saying, America nice place to visit, just don’t drink the water!

Who cares if the judge is “perplexed” — maybe he should re-read the Constitution?

  3. Jake Says:

For most of American history, homosexual behavior WAS considered “abnormal” — not sure what’s so hard to defend about that — as for brith control “preventing” unwanted pregnancies, in some cases, it also prevents FERTILIZED EGGS from implanting too. More “pro-life” Christians should become aware of that fact.

As are most Americans. The Judge followed the same guideline that Gonzo’s department is trying to push.

‘Do as I say, not as I do’ is this administration’s mantra.

Sorry, but could you point us to the article in the Constitution that says the President should grant clemency to criminal crony appointees who disclose the name of covert CIA agents and then lie in court to cover their asses and their boss’ ass ?

This is so sick. This is how we support our troops. If this was true, then why did the military allow these people to enlist in the first place? This is the Military’s way of getting out of paying disability payments for PTSD. We can prepare ourselves for another 50-60,000 servicemen and women being separated under “personality disorder” diagnosis. So we will have thousands of our citizens who have sacrificed for this country come home with PTSD that will be untreated, because they won’t have insurance to cover treatment. Then we will see a rise in divorce, spousal abuse, homeless and probably “postal” incidents committed by the people we have abandoned.

Way to go Bush and the Lemming Republics. Way to support our troops.

  11. SGT Higgins Says:

“If you have a combat tour and you are getting labeled as a personality disorder, there is something wrong. It’s a lie,” Peskoff said. —— Damn right it is! If you’re able-bodied enough to go downrange, then there was NO preexisting condition. If there had been and they sent the Soldier downrange anyway, then they are criminally negligent.

introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would temporarily suspend personality disorder discharges for combat veterans —– Combat veterans should be allowed to be medically discharged…but to cut them loose with a ‘preexisting condition’ and therefore get out of providing medical care…is so wrong it’s disgusting.

This is a sick philosophy. The trouble is, it’s the same philosophy the corporate elite use in dealing with American workers, and the same one used by the healthcare industry in dealing with patients (see Sicko if you haven’t yet).

The only thing that is going to stop this administration and its perverted minions is to take to the streets in numbers large enough that no one can ignore.

  35. david Says:

Jake, Libby was not pardoned. He had his sentence commuted. The reasons offered by Bush for commuting the 30 month sentence were perplexing. The 30 months fell within sentencing guidelines; it was not excessive; and the suffering of his family is irrelevant. What many liberal progressives have mocked is that Bush offered every reason he has rejected from the Left when dealing with sentencing reform. Indeed, Bush, who quickly developed the reputation of a Hanging Judge as Governor of Texas, has never revealed any compassion towards people sentenced to jail. Unless they were close personal friends who knew too much.

You might want to read Terry Jones’ A President Transformed.

As for the disgraceful treatment of wounded and traumatized vets, well, that’s the way it is with fascist governments and HMOs. This “pre-existing condition” crap is a standard way that private insurers try to ditch an expensive patient. It is totally bogus. What it does is place the onus on the patient who must now sue to prove the condition was not pre-existing or certainly had nothing to do with injuries received in combat. But the courts are going hard to the right. So don’t expect them to find in any GI’s favour.

However, it should be part of all recruiting pitches that, should you be injured, the VA will p!ss and sh!t all over you and toss you out onto the street. Let’s see if the recruiters make their monthly quota then.

  60. david Says:

Bush came to Washington to supposedly restore the integrity of the White House. He has then gone about doing every single thing the Republicans despised in the Clinton administration and doing it in spades.

The Republicans claimed Clinton abused his power of pardon and spent over year investigating his pardons for malfeasance. The Republicans found nothing. Bush, on the other hand, has pardoned a White House insider who could implicate Cheney and Bush in impeachable offences. If there was a quid pro quo to get the pardon, that’s a crime. Sorry, even the Constitution wouldn’t get Bush out of that. And a good argument can be made that Libby ‘bought’ his pardon by not defending himself.

Gorillas are far peaceful than chimpanzees, have stable families (and real family values), and only use force to defend themselves from predators, not to force their will onto other members. A little showing of force is enough. Chimps are more violent by far.

Well, I’m on forums far busier and with way more threads than TP and they can keep order quite easily. Why can’t TP?

The trolls should simply have the posts deleted. Again and again. Stricken for the record, as they say in Court.

It would not be surpressing Free Speech. The concept being invoked would be Decorum, a necessary component in political discourse.

The purpose of the Trolls is to disrupt Free Speech. They’re like the nuts who disrupted the Hindu prayer in Congress. They are frightened that Free Speech might lead to Progress.

So I feel ThinkProgress should live up to it’s mandate and weed out the trolls so we can Think about Progress.

For the record, I think every abortion doctor should “do time” (or preferably get the death penalty) too.

Here’s the short and sweet response to that, Jake, and it’s your favorite kind:
Abortion is legal, so there’s nothing wrong with it.

Explanation: No matter what Bush does, if you can somehow dispute that it was not technically breaking a law (even though you’re wrong about that 99% of the time), you use that to justify it. So, you’ve got no complaint against abortion. It’s legal, so STFU.

This is not too crazy a comment. Some people gain friends and influence by being the host of the party. One might want to investigate what kind of entertainer Sen. Vitter was and did he provide ‘dates’ for some of his political buddies. He may have even been provided with an expense account by a friendly lobbyist.

  110. Candyce Says:

We’ve all heard it before, but the best way to deal trolls is to simply not reply to them, ignore, pretend they don’t exist. It’s the reaction they crave, and we give it to them every time. I’m guilty as well.

Registration would solve the issue of namejacking. I think those of us who appreciate this site and most of its inhabitants wouldn’t mind a few minutes of inconvenience in order to raise the level of debate and integrity of TP. I don’t know if it’s technically possible here. Really, our best tool is to resist the urge to reply to obvious idiots.

That triggered speculation from pundits that Al Queda in the USA was about ready to strike with another September 11th Style attack. Talk about increased chatter, movement of resources, and patterns that looked like the summer before September 11th, 2001 emerged and were harped on by the so-called liberal media. They let it stay out like that for a few days, letting lines like ‘terrorists will attack your neighborhood shopping mall if we pull out of Iraq’ out from their little caves. Then suddenly…

Chertoff now: “Oh, I was just playing a hunch. There’s nothing in particular out there that suggests that the Terrorists are about to make an attack. It was revealed that his hunch that we’re going to encounter terrorists was not only a hunch but a so-called gut feeling. The media never once questioned why he’s playing a hunch. They reported the other fools in the administration’s claims with not so much as a single comment about inconsistencies in his and their stories.

PHEEEAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRBLARGH! is getting as old as CLINTON DID IT!!!!1!11!11!!!one!1, and yet the media still reports it as if it’s gospel. When do we finally call bull on this once and for all?

Let’s see if I’ve got this right…apparently McConnell is content to “stand idle” while he is made out to be the good guy in this standoff. Who’s to say this impasse isn’t scripted as a win-win for the obstructionist minority?…the bill is stalled, McConnell slips the blame, and a junior is credited with being a rock in the gears.

This is part of the problem we have as independents/progressives/liberals. We like to jump from problem to problem. If we just focused on a few big issues we might be more effective.

Inherent Contempt is not a one day issue. It may be our last remaining “weapon” to bring the neo-cons to accountability. I hope everybody is still jamming the phones of their reps. demanding Inherent Contempt being brought up against Harriet Miers yesterday. I turned on the radio today and she hasn’t been charged yet!! We can always attack others who use prostitutes services. I now understand what Karl Rove was saying about how Republicans are the example of Christian, family, moral Values of American and all should vote for them and use them as examples of what to do.

Preexisting conditions, particularly in the case of PTSS can now be easily attributed to prior “personal disorder” to avoid payments. 142. Probus Says:

Vitter is a disgrace, and those republicans who preach morality and up hold the sanctity of marriage should call on him to resign. If he was taking these calls while he was in the House and it was in session, then the Ethics committee needs to take steps to remove Vitter from office like Foley. He broke the law.

Someone should put a hold on Holsinger’s nomination so it doesn’t move forward or out of the committee. He doesn’t deserve this position. His bias is both bigoted and factually inaccurate. People with his views often discriminate against Gay Americans in the workplace. It should not be tolerated. Discrimination is against the law. Homosexuality is as normal as heterosexuality.

Bush stepped outside his powers of clemency when he commuted Libby’s sentence. The judge’s sentence should have been allowed to stand and Libby should have served his full sentence. He broke the law and should pay for his crimes. Libby is not above the law neither is Bush who commuted Libby’s sentence to save himself and Cheney from potential prosecution. Bush didn’t respect the rule of law.

These payments are the military’s responsibility. This is unconscionable and is a disservice to our troops and their sacrifices to this nation. Our troops lay their lives on the line for us. We owe it to them to get this policy right. Like the Walter Reed scandal we need to take better care of our troops.

Al Qaeda is by no means an Iraqi phenomenon. Bush couldn’t even provide any proof at this press conference how al Qaeda in Iraq was specifically related to bin Laden or the organization in Afghanistan. These people may identify with bin Laden and his ideology but there is no proof they are receiving resources from him. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11 or bin Laden. We invaded the wrong country, in the wrong place and at the wrong time. There were no WMDs, we were lied into this war.
