WH refuses to criticize Iraqi lawmakers’ vacation.

On Friday, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow dismissed concerns of the Iraqi parliament’s August recess, even though President Bush promised in May that Vice President Cheney would persuade them to skip it. Steve Benen notes that several conservative senators, who initially criticized the Iraqi lawmakers, are now silent: “Are the stay-the-course Republicans going to do anything about it? If the past week is any indication, they’ll bluster a bit before doing what they always do — acceding to the president’s demands.”

Well, the Iraqi parliament doesn’t want to do some of the things being forced upon by the Americans. When occupied, the only way to fight back is to delay. This is their resistance.

wonderful, just wonderful. They go on vacation to avoid the 130 degree heat and our guys are left there to die in it. Where is the justice? Where has the justice been for our military in this whole occupation? I think we all know the answer to that.

They no longer want us there and believe that they can handle it themselves. This is becoming clearer each day. Besides, they know that the only reason we’re there is Bush’s oil lust. They’ll be pitching us out on our ear soon even before the Bush Cabal is able to try to clean up it’s rep by designing some new cockamamie Iraq plan.

We’re about to get heaved out of their country right now.

    Comment by Arthur C. — July 14, 2007 @ 7:26 pm

    About the Kingdom:

All agreed that the country is heading toward a great catastrophe, the depth of which is not known except by Allah. One big merchant commented : ” the king is leading the state into ’sixty-six’ folded disaster”, (We bemoan this and can only say: “No power and power acquiring except through Allah”). Numerous princes share with the people their feelings, privately expressing their concerns and objecting to the corruption, repression and the intimidation taking place in the country. But the competition between influential princes for personal gains and interest had destroyed the country. Through its course of actions the regime has torn off its legitimacy:

    (1) Suspension of the Islamic Shari’ah law and exchanging it with man made civil law.
The regime entered into a bloody confrontation with the truthful Ulamah and the righteous youths (we sanctify nobody; Allah sanctify Whom He pleaseth).

    (2) The inability of the regime to protect the country, and allowing the enemy of the Ummah – the American crusader forces- to occupy the land for the longest of years.
The crusader forces became the main cause of our disastrous condition, particularly in the economical aspect of it due to the unjustified heavy spending on these forces. As a result of the policy imposed on the country, especially in the field of oil industry where production is restricted or expanded and prices are fixed to suit the American economy ignoring the economy of the country. Expensive deals were imposed on the country to purchase arms. People asking what is the justification for the very existence of the regime then?

As stated by the people of knowledge, it is not a secret that to use man made law instead of the Shari’a and to support the infidels against the Muslims is one of the ten “voiders” that would strip a person from his Islamic status (turn a Muslim into a Mushrik, non believer status).

    3. On Sept. 11th 2001, Cheney was in charge of Norad drills involving actual aircraft in staged “terrorist” take-over drills. One was even involving a “simulated” take-over targeting Twin Towers.

    4. In 2000, Norad was called to 67 intercepts of suspicious aircraft. They achieved 100% in required time. On 9/11 they were called on by FAA 4 times and achieved 0%, under control of Dick Cheney.

    5. No Vice President has ever run Norad drills before of since.

I’m only going to try and reach you once, Mr. P.

    Please listen. Just for once.

Want to know the name of the longest lasting (time-wise) terrorist group in the world?

They like to call themselves the KKK.

They started off as fraternity type idiots, scaring poor newly freed slaves.

Then, the turn of the century saw a change. They felt Catholics were taking over, and abhorred that the black men had the right to vote. There were a lot of speeches about how they were going to take the power away from the Protestant Whites, were going to destroy them. Thus violence began – for no other reason than they wanted to keep their power, and keep others down.

Does any of this sound the least bit familiar to the fright-based Muslim haters?

You call Muslims savages who will kill us all given the chance.

The KKK called black people savages, who would rape white women given the chance.

It’s all fear based – and NOT true.

It’s all fear and ignorance based. Get to know ONE muslim person, and then decide.

  92. Umar Lee says:

    trueblue,
Thanks for sticking up for us Muslims!
    I really appreciate it!

  93. CT_V1 says:

Muslimsh*tlegislators, I see, could use the much-needed time off from doing absolutely nothing. They said they needed more time to spend with their family, doing absolutely nothing x nothing.

  94. Badger says:

The KKK got a real boost from the D.W. Griiffith movie “Birth of a Nation.” It portrayed blacks during reconstruction as virtual jungle beasts who stole from, brutalized, and raped whites. By the end of World War I, 25 million tickets had been sold. In the 1920’s the mayors of Portland Oregon and Portland Maine were KKK members. Sen. Robt. Byrd was a member. A definite paradigm for Hitler’s rise to power a few years later in Europe
Amazingly, what spelled the end of popular support for the KKK was Superman. In his book, Freakonomics, Steven Levitt describes a KKK infiltrator, who fed information to the writers of the Superman character, who led the charge against the KKK. Kids all across America began questioning their parents bigoted viewpoints.
Mr. P. should read the books by Khaled Hosseini… Kite Runner… to get a look at real Muslim people.

  95. Mr. President says:

    Trueblue,

Fear is one of the most important instincts that human-beings are blessed to have. Without fear, surely, the human race would not exist today (as our anscestors in Africa would have been devoured by lions). Some psychologists say that it is natural, when one is affraid, for he or she to instinctively seek a state of perceived safety through “flight” or “fight” responses. Adrenaline and endorphines are released and the person have the experience might even become stronger, run faster, or think more clearly in order to escape or negate the perceived threatening situation.

Here in America, I know Muslims and I have known Muslims, they do not condone this:

We — with Allah’s help — call on every Muslim who believes in Allah and wishes to be rewarded to comply with Allah’s order to kill the Americans and plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it. We also call on Muslim ulema, leaders, youths, and soldiers to launch the raid on Satan’s U.S. troops and the devil’s supporters allying with them, and to displace those who are behind them so that they may learn a lesson.

From my position, here in America, I do not experience the fear and paranoia which would produce the irrational, instinctive chain-reactions in my brain/glands/nervous system/etc. associated with the flight or fight response. Hence I do not feel the urge to do violence to anyone, or to hide under my bed/stay out of malls/etc.

My position is calculated and utilitarian, it is in the best interest of the USA, and those who are now considered “muslims,” for this nonsensical religion to:

    a) undergo a MASSIVE make over (which is not likely)

    or

    b) for Islam to be abolished of the face of the earth.

“echo-chamber”??? Is that what you call it when you get your head up your own butt? How quaint…

Dissent… yeaaaah… mocking a dead American soldier is “dissent”. Swarming a website’s thread w/ over 4000 hostile, vulgar posts in 12 hrs is “dissent”.

Are you getting your definitions from Conservapedia?

Now, if “dissent” were to merge w/ “commentary”, you guys would have “dysentary”, which goes along way to explaining alot of the posts you do here.

You can take your speculation elsewhere. As a matter of fact, I think you’d be more likely to find your answer by emailing TP about it. You could ask: “Were the disgraceful comments and impersonation of that dead soldier linked to any original poster on this board? If so, could you give me the name?” Heck, they might even let you in. You can finally know who was the culprit. I’m warning you, however, that it may very well be a regular leftist poster and it could blow up in your face.

Just great — the Iraqi Parliament will go on vacation in August. This may be the news that tips the scales of Am public opinion on Bush’s disastrous War. The US Congress also plans to vacation in August, despite the fact that our troops are stuck in a quagmire with no plan or strategy from DC.

Here’s an idea to follow McConnell’s certain FILIBUSTERof the Levin – Reed Amendment:
NO vacation for Congress if McConnell filibusters this amendment. Hold his feet to the fire. Demand action on Iraq and a plan to end the War.

  181. Tired Of Fighting says:

Good Evening all, and thanks for the support.

The WH can’t criticize the vacation because the lawmakers will be vacationing in Crawford, TX.

Meanwhile after 15-18 months of non-stop combat Soldiers get 15-16 days. Even though some units try to give more or maybe let some go home twice its just not possible to do, everyone wont get a chance.

But those who lose a limb or their life, well they get to leave for good, while those in WA get to fly first-class to their summer homes, or play golf in Scotland with the lobbyists that are really running this country.

Just one day after the Iraqi government received failing marks in President Bush’s surge interim progress report, Americans learned that the Iraqi parliament is proceeding with its plans to take off the month of August. But while the American people may be up in arms, President Bush’s amen corner is predictably silent. After all, given Bush’s own record-setting penchant for vacationing during crises here at home, Republicans are understandably reticent to criticize the absentee government in Baghdad.

WOW! I’ve missed quite a bit, and I don’t mind. Seems some of the trolls were off-the-charts earlier (I didn’t notice if it was last night or early this morning). Last night Joker made a good number of extremely hateful comments about my son (although he intended them to be hurtful, i’m sure).

I’ve read most of the comments on the threads and see that Joker, and perhaps Mr. P now, will be taken to task for being a great deal more than just stupid.

    Tire of Fighting,
I admire you for taking the Hard Right over the Easy Wrong. I’d like to think I also would not have sunk to the trolls level and spent a few hours just blasting away at them, but frankly, I’m not so certain I wouldn’t have.

    willyloman,
Thanks for your efforts in calling them out.

I’m disheartened that their behavior has led to some of my favorite posters apparently abandoning TP. I hope that they will reconsider once TP gets on the stick and blocks posters who are intentionally offensive (like Joker was last night), not just ignorant or confrontational.

    Tired of Fighting,

I was one of those who decided to no longer post at Think Progress because of the shocking, despicable act which was committed against you.

But I couldn’t help looking in to see how things were going.

Now I see that you have posted more inspirational words here, and have not run away (as you would have had every right to do). That is probably because you are a soldier, a brave man who does give up the fight, and does not turn his back on adversity.

I’m not much of a soldier myself.

It looks like TP is taking some action.

If you can take the putrid abuse that was vilely spewed at you, and continue with dignity, I, who was much less victimized, should be able to fight back as well.

Many wise souls have tried hard here to convince some of these trolls that there is more to life than hate. You have perhaps done more to advance that cause than anyone.

Thank you for your service and your patriotism.

  198. Quizmos says:

Well, it is a bit difficult to criticize the Iraqi government for taking a vacation just as he is about to take the month of August off himself. But, not before shortening the down time of our soldiers before their next tour of Baghdad, and extending their stays one more time. Hitler treated his soldiers better than this! And, American’s allow this to happen in the name of supporting our troops. We should all hang our heads in shame!

  199. The Oracle says:

Why do I get the feeling (some might even call it a “gut feeling”) that there will be a major insurgent attack on or an attack inside the Green Zone while the Iraqi legislators’ are on vacation during August?

Which strangely enough is the same month during which George W. Bush usually takes a month-long vacation at his compound in Crawford, like he did in August 2001 during the entire month preceding the 9/11 attacks.

Hmmm, and Michael Chertoff just stated that he had a “gut feeling” that the right-wing religious fundamentalist al Qaeda were going to attack somewhere inside America sometime this summer. Hmmm. Maybe in August while Bush is away from Washington vacationing in Crawford? Hmmm.

Or maybe Bush and Cheney are planning on bombing Iran in August, which will definitely and dramatically increase afterward the risk of a terrorist attack inside the United States. Which might explain Chertoff’s deliberately vague “gut feeling” comment the other day? Possibly laying the rhetorical groundwork (i.e. spin) for what Bush and Cheney are about to do, with completely predictable consequences?

Remember, March 2003 was chosen as the “right” time for the invasion of Iraq specifically for political reasons. That is, Bush was going to be up for reelection in November 2004, so they had to start the war far enough in advance for the neo-con Republican strategy (and timetable) to be implemented and completed.

Thus, all the grandiose claims by the neo-con Republicans that Iraq would be a cakewalk, our invading troops would be greeted with flowers and candy, setting up a democratic, representative government would be a snap, our troop levels in Iraq would be drawn down dramatically by the end of 2003, and that post-invasion, increased Iraqi oil revenues would pay for all of this.

In other words, the neo-cons thought that why should they bother even thinking about anything other than what they had planned for post-invasion Iraq. In their warped minds, by the time summer 2004 rolled around (and just prior to the November presidential elections), the new, Saddam-less, Baathist-less Iraq would be a shining example of the neo-cons’ brilliant war and nation-building strategy…which could be used in their Bush-reelection campaign propaganda.

Which brings us to 2007, the year before another presidential election that is scheduled next year for November 2008. If anything, the neo-con Republicans are consistent in their insanity. Which means that they are probably following the same game-plan for Iran that they followed prior to starting the Iraq War in 2003.

Troop deployments threatening Iran (carrier groups in the Persian Gulf, for example). Increased rhetoric about how dangerous Iran is to America, and American interests. Downplaying and dissing diplomacy as a way to resolve any disagreements. Ramping up the rhetoric (and fear factor) about how vulnerable the United States (and our “shopping malls”) are to a terrorist attack. And all for purely partisan political reasons.

And then add in the comment by a neo-con Israeli the other day about how Israel is prepared on a moment’s notice to bomb the crap out of Iran’s suspected nuclear facilities.

Yep, I have a distinctive “gut feeling” that Bush, Cheney and (some Israelis) are getting mighty anxious, apparently watching a window of warmongering opporturnity close. With Bush and Cheney (and Karl Rove) “strategerizing” that by attacking Iran this year, by next year’s November presidential election the “mission” will have been “accomplished” in Iran, and Republicans will have a flowers and candy, cakewalk of an election. Yeah, right.

At the risk of being a little hypocritical, might I add one more comment regarding the disgusting spectacle that ensued after Tired of Fighting’s earlier post?

And this is directed to those trolls (and non-trolls) of military age who are so avid for this so-called war, for the death of all Muslims (good luck with that), for blood in exchange for oil, and who believe somehow they are waging this war at their sweat-soaked keyboards.

Sergeant Sherman might be alive today if you had been there at his side to defend him and fight alongside him. And if not Sherman, then perhaps another soldier, whose name–to our shame–none of us remembers.

The supporters of this war who are capable of fighting in it but are not doing so, are doubly cowardly and traitorous: first, by supporting this ridiculous war which brings nothing to our shores but disgrace and the caskets of fallen heroes; and second, by refusing to serve your country in a cause you believe so vital to its very existence.

If Daryll is right about this Hell where sinners burn eternally, then you shall surely be in it.

  208. Katie says:

Bush is afraid that if he criticizes the Iraqi parliament for taking a month long vacation, they may come back from vacation and cut us out of the oil revenue sharing bill. This is really what they should do. They should come up with a law that shares the oil amongst the people of Iraq only. Why should we get a share of their oil profits? Is it supposed to be a reward for our having completely destroyed the infrastructure of their country and causing thousands of innocent Iraqi deaths? I am confused as to why we should be rewarded for turning their country into the hell hole it is today.

But, then, the Republic world…up is down, black is white, occupiers are saviors.

  209. Carmikl1 says:

On CNN’s Late Edition, Suzanne Malveaux just asked Stephen Hadley about whether they were asking the Iraqi Parliament to cancel their August vacation. His answer was that the administration would continue pushing reconciliation during August, whatever that means. Pushing reconciliation is not the same as asking the Iraqi Parliament to cancel it’s August vacation. Stephen Hadley ducked Suzanne Malveaux’s question twice using that technique. Suzanne Malveaux should have called him on it, at least the second time he did it. I wonder if Wolf Blizer would have done any better. The press isn’t very good at calling politicians on their misdirection.
