On Heels Of Senate’s Iran Vote, Brownback Declared I’m Ready To Strike Iran»

On Wednesday, the Senate voted 97-0 to pass a resolution sponsored by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) to censure Iran “for what it said was complicity in the killing of U.S. soldiers in Iraq.” The resolution required the Bush administration to regularly report to Congress on Iran’s role in Iraq.

While the resolution explicitly rejected authorization for immediate military action, the gist of the resolution declared Iran is participating in acts of war against the United States, thereby laying the foundation for a confrontation with Iran. Newshoggers wrote that the resolution may provide the “political cover for launching a war.”

Validating the concern many felt, Sen. Sam Brownback appeared on Fox News shortly after the vote and declared he was ready to preemptively strike Iran. Host Sean Hannity asked Brownback, “There’s probably going to come a point for the next president that they’re going to have to determine whether to go out and have that preemptive strike. And you’re ready and would be ready to do that?”

“Yes, I am, and I think we have to be,” Brownback answered. “Sean, if we’re going to be serious about this fight, and we’re in this fight, and probably for a generation. We’re probably in this fight for a generation.” Watch it:

When the Congress vote to authorize force against Iraq in 2002, it cited as justification the fact that Congress had passed a law in 1998 sponsored by Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) and co-sponsored by Lieberman that concluded Iraq posed a serious threat. From the 2002 resolution:

Whereas in Public Law 105-235 (August 14, 1998), Congress concluded that Iraq’s continuing weapons of mass destruction programs threatened vital United States interests and international peace and security, declared Iraq to be in ‘material and unacceptable breach of its international obligations’ and urged the President ‘to take appropriate action, in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws of the United States, to bring Iraq into compliance with its international obligations’

UPDATE: Hullabaloo has more.

UPDATE II: The LA Times reports the greatest number of foreign militants come from Saudi Arabia.

Germany made what could be called preemptive strikes back in the 1930s. They trumped up ‘charges’ against Austria, Belgium, France, Poland, Russia, France. Guess they did alright for a while. Not a perfect comparison, but there are some glaring similarities. How many will need to die because of Bush Cheeney and the other neocon chickenhawks who really don’t know about having things blow up near you and having invisible hot metal coming at you fast. Kind of scary these sick ignorant men pretending that they are tough guys. Its easy for them when others do the real dirty work.

  50. JG Says:

I just got finished watching the DVD “War Made Easy” by Norman Soloman and narrated by Sean Penn. Every single person in this country should watch this and educate themselves on propaganda: what it looks like, how it is used, and why it is so effective, and view all the parallels of the last several wars this country has waged in the name of spreading peace and democracy. Watching all the old footage lined up alongside our current history is pretty amazing. It was mindboggling watching so many presidents saying all the same things, using all the same language and reasons to promote the conflicts. This is an important film and if Americans want to learn how we get into these wars, they can learn a lot by watching how history keeps repeating itself. The footage is both damning and compelling.

Then he said Umar Lee is another alias of Joker….Umar Lee hadn’t posted.

So, you tell me. Democratic principles and all.

It was vile. And I cannot “let it go”. Even if my father wasn’t career military, you just don’t do that.

And now, every lie he tries to spin it with makes me sicker.

It is offensive. It is beyond offensive.

  64. Marcus Aurelius Says:

Lst post was to the troll and the chimp.

  65. spit take Says:

Katy, the offenses attributed to Mr Pee are much deeper and more offensive than the sample quoted by willyloman. On a thread the other night (Friday, I believe) we had a post from “Tired of Fighting”, who said he was a soldier who had served several tours in Iraq, and who had lost a comrade there three years ago. One of the trolls began posting using the dead soldiers name and smearing “Tired of Fighting”, along the lines of the Papa Smurf post.

After thoroughly disgusting most of the regulars who were on line at the time, this troll (we can’t prove who it was, but it sounded an awful lot like Mr Pee) went into an extended rap/ebonics conversation with himself, posting under several different handles, all of them vaguely derogatory towards blacks and products of a typical white suburban right-wing teenager’s mind.

All in all, it was a virtuoso performance of sleaze and cowardice. The posting and language patterns track so closely with Mr pee’s established persona here that it convinced several of us that he is the culprit. The fact that his posts over the last few weeks have pretty much abandoned reason and rely more and more on falsehood and childish arguments means that there is simply no reason to give him the benefit of any doubt.

And willyloman summed up the case since with admirable concision.

  66. Egreggious Says:

Someone else can go to TP about this if they like.

As for me, I am content to hold Pee to no higher standard for the truth and for respect than he exhibits himself.

If he, by some odd chance, is innocent, it is enough that he knows it.

It’s not like we’re locking him up in Gitmo without a trial.

  70. Egreggious Says:

The Joker was evidently responsible for the first slander of Sgt. Sherman. Pee defended this pr*ck on a regular basis. That, in itself, is reason to revile this scum.

  71. david Says:

Well, it’s very difficult to figure out how to read the actual amendment, but it doesn’t call for war against Iran. Nope. It censures Iran. And it calls on the WH to report every 60 days on what Iran is up to.

That Iran is providing assistance to the insurgancy is natural. Iran provided refuge for many years for enemies of Saddam’s government. And it certainly doesn’t think of America as Iraq’s liberator.

Mind you, it’s difficult to say who in Iran is doing the helping. It doesn’t seem to be coming from the top level of government, but from the groups friendly to Iraqi Shiites. This is understandable.

Previous attempts by the Pentagon to tar Iran have failed or been exposed or were minimized by further investigation. This amendment, although welcomed by the “Let’s bomb Iran” crowd, reinforces the idea that Congress has the right to declare war.

Lieberman and Brownback may be ready to strike Iran, but Congress is not. And this amendment demands that a case be made before any action is taken. I can understand why it got a 97-0 vote.

We should look to the British hostage situation for an example. They got their 15 sailors back. And all went well. And Iran has just moved to allow UN inspectors back.

Of course, a major headache for Bush is that a large number of Iraqi parliamentarians would love to see Iran involved in Iraq. They’d welcome it. So, whose will is more important?

A 97-0 vote? Does it matter, then, who says what after such a vote passes? The Democrats have just repeated what they participated in and passed in 2002, which allowed the preemptive strike into Iraq!! Insanity!

Personally, I’ve now lost all hope that the occupation of Iraq will come to an end; that war with Iran can be avoided; that Bush and Cheney will be impeached; that justice will ever be done and that this democracy will survive. Frankly, it would appear that the terrorists have won. We have lost our freedom, our principles, our respect and standing in the world, and our economy is dependent on debt. The wallpaper is still up, but the walls have crumbled and lie in ruins.

  84. spit take Says:

And you also don’t understand the nature of “fascism” if you think a popular campaign against a nominal peer is it, Mr Pee.

But then, nthing you have ever posted would lead one to believe that you understand the nature of Fascism.

    A$$hole.

  85. Egreggious Says:

Another reason I have no sympathy for Pee is because he drives away people from this site who actually have something constructive to say.

    Perhaps that is his purpose.

But he is vile, and, by his very presence here, he continues to defame dead soldiers.

  86. willyloman Says:

I was not a soldier. My father was a sailor (submariner) and I learned that there is a bond between these people that goes way beyond anything I will ever know.

Judging from Mr.P’s apparent age, I would say that this may be something he doesn’t realise. Not many would, who didn’t see it or feel it.

veritas recently stepped over a line in here, and veritas, as many of us have had to do in the past, recognized it; and took responsibility for it. i have had to many times, and it was not those times that I regret, it was the times that I failed to do so that haunt me.

It’s not a competition. This was a man who gave his life for this country. A living breathing man, just like so many others before and after.

Like Tired said, he was not a “comma”. He was loved, just like any others.

    http://www.legacy.com/ Soldier/ Story.aspx?PersonID=3130083

Go and read about this man, this soldier, and think to yourself if you wish to commit so many more to this end in Iran.

Do you owe it to yourself. Because you owe us nothing.

  88. terpsicore Says:

It would seem to me that this amendment might ensure that dialogue occurs every 60 days at which point it would become a point of control over the war-happy profiteering criminals in the long run. I really don’t believe anyone knows the true value on either side of this amendment. What Brownhole and Lieberslobber say about Iraq is irrelevant because they both tanked politicos whom no one is even listening to. Hopefully, there’s more (much more) to this than originally meets the eye - where the rubber meets the road may be that it provides oversight by Congress, that’s all. Let’s not jump the gun and follow some of the nonsensical trolls here attempting to connect dots which aren’t there, particularly between some of the Dem candidates who voted yes on this amendment. There must be logical reason for them having done so, if in fact, they have done so.

    http://www.pbs.org/ moyers/ journal/ 07132007/ profile.html

This is the best, the most clearly articulated argument for the absolute NEED for impeachment proceedings being brought against Bush AND Cheney that I have heard yet. It is measured, educated, articulate, and unbiased. Bruce Fein was the person who wrote the articles of Impeachment against Clinton. Both arguments are in agreement and extremely compelling. This has to happen NOW! They lay out clearly all the reasons why.

If you haven’t watched this, PLEASE watch it. It is in two parts and lasts about 40 minutes. This isn’t about getting Bush and Cheney, this is about ensuring that the Constitution is preserved and showing that it can work like it should and must. The argument is for taking action NOW so that Bush and Cheney do not leave office with this terrible overreaching of power being the new precedent for future Presidencies - whether Dems or Repubs. John Nichols makes a very clear case for the fact that impeachment is not causing a crisis, impeachment is the strong medicine - the cure for the current Constitutional crisis. The founders of this country were wise in their creating of our Constitution. We need to let it work like it must for the protection of this nation.

    Laying the groundwork:

The AUMF that launched the War in Afghanistan authorized the president to attack any nation that helped those who attacked us on Sep 11, 2001.

The president constantly refers to al Qaeda in Iraq as “the people who attacked us on Sep 11th.” They are not. They (al Qaeda in Iraq) formed in 2004.

The president has been saying that Iran is helping this al Qaeda in Iraq group.

The president will soon claim that the 2002 AUMF already gives him the authority to attack Iran because they are aiding “those who attacked us on Sep 11th.”

I expect the attack on Iran to come within one Friedman Unit.

It’s distressing to see Churchill’s racist contempt for the Arabs and Muslims. And his imperialist vision of a Jewish homeland as a beachhead for the European occupation of the Middle East.

Cheney and others seem to be repeating this mistake. They are now trying to break up or destroy every functioning Muslim nation in the region.

I am not sure if I understood all of this correctly, but there was a pact made between Britan and the “Zionist” during WWI. They wanted to return to the homeland, Israel.

During the war, they negociated with both sides to see who would better provide them a territory from the palistinians.

What they offered was helping to bring the US into the war on one side or the other.

The deal was struck and the Lousitania (spelling I know) set sail.

There are letters to that effect. Around 1913-1915 ish.

One quick note. There was a reason that Hitler blamed the Jews for the oppression that ensued after the war. This connection between Britan and the US.

The Balfour Declaration of 1917 (dated November 2, 1917) was a classified formal statement of policy by the British government on the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of the World War I.

No need to wonder, as you have here. The neocon ideology, and program along with its goals, have all been stated verbally, and written out (PNAC document etc,) again and again. In short:

    1. Control of the US by a unitary president.

    2. A Congress reduced to impotence in its role as a balance to the Executive branch.

    3. A Supreme Court stacked and controlled by the unitary President.

    4. The rule of law written and controlled by the unitary president. (Think signing statements!)

    5. Complete control of the media with the goal of keeping the general public misinformed and uninformed.

With these goals reached, and possessing the greatest military industrial complex known to man, the neocons can pursue their dream of corporate world domination, called The American Empire.

Every thing that the neocons do falls into this picture. What we call stupid, unbelievable or uncaring, (for example: response to Katrina, attempt to destroy Social Security, attacks and denial on climate change, Iraq invasion, troop treatment-both active duty and the wounded, not to mention the dead who come home invisibly- the list is endless,) is part of the larger plan. This is the Machiavellian plan brought up to date by Leo Strauss in his teaching at The Univ. of Chicago in the late 60s and early 70s. His students and believers are the neocons that have called the shots for the last 7 years in an an extreme and open way.

Nothing hidden or secret, really. Its all out there to be seen and acted against.
The problem is FEAR! And that is another whole post all by itself.

Frankly I think you should be banned with the rest. You may not have been guilty of the smearing of both a dead and live serviceman, but you are guilty of racist posts and calling for genocide. You are guilty of violating the terms here multiple times.
You are disgusting and not worthy to be called human.

OMG, the spineless Democratic Senators voted for this crap! Where’s the evidence? I have seen none. All I have seen and heard is the Bush Crime Family telling us that Iran is responsible for problems in Iraq. And we all know how the Bush Crime Family would never lie to us.

This country has gone totally, batshit insane. I can’t believe that our Democratic senators participated in this. I say let’s vote them all out of office!

The PNAC empire marching on. There’s no way they’ll let this opportunity to do something about Iran pass by. Forget terrorism and WMDs, this is pure imperialism.

    don’t wait too long!
a friend and i were discussing this the other day…
he made an observation that the people were “afraid”…
OF WHAT?, i want to know… afraid of what?
what is more frightening than loosing freedom and democracy?

    Salesman,

It really was me. I just noticed your post had disappeared, and wasn’t sure why.

I thought maybe the moderators were under the impression you were lying or something.

I wasn’t really addressing you. I was addressing the moderators.

“Another reason I have no sympathy for Pee is because he drives away people from this site who actually have something constructive to say.
    Perhaps that is his purpose.”

Actually, Mr. President doesn’t drive people away from this site. The people who play with him and the others do. If you could just resist temptation and not feed the trolls they would get discouraged and leave. But so many of you are here simply to play with the trolls.

Someone said to me in another thread that if we don’t fight the trolls we are allowing the bad guys to win. Balderdash. Playing with the trolls is destroying this site. I used to enjoy coming here because there are many people with ideas I respect. But, I’m about ready to leave because so many of you think it is entertaining to play with the trolls and thread after thread becomes nothing but troll and play troll postings.

What are we talking about? We don’t even post it because we know they monitor sites. Gitmo? Black bases around the US? we know they are there. We know Blackwater is there. We know they have the Patriot Act that lets em come into your home while you are not there and plant whatever they want to plant, and then hold you for forever.
How do we know it hasn’t happened here already?
