Kristol: ‘We’re Not In A Civil War’ In Iraq, ‘This Is Just Not True’»

Approximately one year ago — in an August 2006 appearance on the Charlie Rose show — Bill Kristol acknowledged that Iraq was teetering on the edge of civil war, stating: “It is true that we are at risk of a sectarian civil war there, and I’m extremely worried about that. I don’t quarrel about that.”

Since Bush adopted his escalation strategy earlier this year, Kristol has turned to defying the reality of the situation on the ground in Iraq in order to justify the troop increase. Today, on Fox News Sunday, Kristol argued that the violence in Iraq does not constitute a civil war:

We’re not in a civil war. This is just not true. American troops are attacking al Qaeda. They’re attacking some elements of the Shi’a militias. They’re doing other things, helping with reconciliation. They are not in the middle of a civil war. It’s not true.

Watch it:

As sectarian violence has increased, multiple U.S. intelligence sources have acknowledged the civil war. In January, the National Intelligence Estimate said, “the term ‘civil war’ accurately describes key elements of the Iraqi conflict, including the hardening of ethno-sectarian identities, a sea change in the character of the violence, ethno-sectarian mobilization, and population displacements.” In March, the Pentagon for the first time said the violence in Iraq constituted a civil war.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell explained, “I have characterized it as a civil war even though the administration does not call it that. And the reason I call it a civil war is I think that allows you to see clearly what we’re facing. We’re facing groups that are now fighting each other: Sunnis vs. Shias, Shias vs. Shias, Sunni vs. al-Qaeda. And it is a civil war.”

UPDATE: More Bill Kristol delusions. In an op-ed in the Washington Post, he writes “Why Bush Will Be A Winner.”

UPDATE II: Atrios has more.

And because the almighty Mr. Kristol says it, then it must be true.

Why does anyone allow this fool a forum to spout his garbage. Doesn’t he know that 72% of the people in this country disagree with him? Does he care. Obviously not, just like the Bush Crime Family doesn’t care what “we the people” (the people part of democracy) think about anything.

Thanks so much for this “heads up”. I’m Tivoing it as we speak.

I love Jim Webb. He is one of the most reasoned and intelligent people we have in government today. I hope that whomever ends up as our presidential candidate considers Webb as a running mate. How about a Gore/Webb ticket. Wouldn’t that be something!

  24. PaulB Says:

At least in our own Civil War, we didn’t have Mexico and Canada crossing the border to fight.

LOL… Is this the best you can do? According to the actual evidence, foreign participation in this conflict is marginal at best. Remove it, and you would still have a civil war, which makes this comment of yours entirely irrelevant. Gee, what a surprise.

Back on topic: Man, I wish that the various news organizations would actually pay attention to what the people they give airtime to actually said and predicted, and subsequently compared it to reality. Those pundits and “experts”, like Kristol, who have a long history of being wrong on, well, everything, would be relegated to 3 a.m. radio shows or shown the door.

Of course, if they did this, 75% or more of the people that the news media have given time to over the past six years would be gone from our national discourse forever.

A very true statement. If the US were in a civil war it would be, by definition, in the US. The US just happens to have a military presence in Iraq during a bloody Iraqi civil war that may be of bushco’s doing but is none of our (true American citizens–not neocons) concern.

Bill Kristol is the Sunday morning joke. Every week he has something even more idiotic thansthe week before. Today his item in the Post is so delusional, that his closest friends should have performed an intervention.

Willyloman, Chris Matthews is unfit as a respectable journalist. He has reduced himself to gossip about people’s sex, their looks, their smells, and such meaningless trash — I agree with you: he’s hard to watch any more.

Jane E. S. , I am liking David Schuster even more as time goes on. He is a journalist; he reports facts and he has challenged the fabricators.
I’d like to see him instead of, let’s say, Tucker Carlson, on MSNBC.
As much as I find Matthews hard to take, Carlson is positively repulsive.

  42. BARTLEBEE Says:

Whats happening here, is the right wing is getting desperate.

Like a wounded animal backed into a corner, they’re lashing out in anger and fear. If you say Lindsey Graham ignorantly lashing out at Jim Webb (the only one of the two who had ever fired a shot at the enemy, or been shot at in combat) as he lectured Webb on Iraq, and how he had been there and Webb had not, so therefore he knew better.

The right wing is backed into a corner and they are severely wounded, which makes them more dangerous than ever.

We have seen over and over how the terror alerts have always coincided with damage to the right wing, whether to Bush or the party as a whole.

Now, when they are at there lowest, is it any wonder that “suddenly”, Osama Bin Laden is back, to frighten us all back into crawling under the skirts of the right wing?

    Watch your backs America.

The right wings scared, and in serious trouble.

And that means terror threats, and attacks.

Kristol (aka Smithers) is a Bush Administration shill. He will never talk about anything King George the Insecure has done to trash the constitution. That will be his legacy.

    * March 11, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, in a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars: “The Iraqi people understand what this crisis is about. Like the people of France in the 1940s, they view us as their hoped-for liberator.”

the Atta-Prague rumor was disproven, and was doubted at the time it was relayed, over the objection of analysts.

The most likely Prague-Atta rumor sources, aside from the discredited curveball, would come from a PR firm.

Hill & Knowlton, the UK firm, had offices in Prague that did other publicity work for governments, businesses, and NGOs.

Hill & Knowlton has several offices in areas directly linked to the false flag war evidence, including Rome, Vatican City, and Niger.

Hill & Knowlton had an office in Niger when the UK embassy was not even there, and Hill & Knowlton did the embassy’s PR when it was there.

The next link to search would be Hill & Knowlton contacts with Michael Ledeen and EU energy minister de Palacio. The two men worked think tank appearances together, have done speaking engagements for AEI, and de Polacio is a Bilderburg signee.

The EU energy minister was the false verification/indy confirmation that let the OSP/WHIG end run procedure and override analysts with the DoE and DCI who doubted the Niger forgery.

Everyone talks impeachment — but the underlying issue is war criminality — and the Neo-Con/Halliburton slough of Capitalists are up to their necks in malfeasance, corruption, murder, ect. If we as a people are to ever stand up with a sense of moral strength again, it will be necessary to prosecute these people — in a world court.

Bill Kristol proclaimed last Monday that the surge is working “better than expected.” A chickenhawk himself who never served in the military, Kristol offered President Bush some martial advice in warding off his surge critics:

We are talking about TROLLS here. The reason why they don’t go away is because people like to play with them. I firmly believe that is the sole reason why a lot of people here post to this forum. They think it somehow makes them more relevant if they can put down a troll.

I don’t think that feeding the trolls adds to the discourse in any way. It is actually a big distraction that has probably caused a lot of intelligent people to abandon this forum. I know that I have been thinking about finding somewhere else to post. Frequently I don’t get to a thread until after there are 100+ posts because I work full time. Then when I start reading comments, I get to about the 20th comment and see that the thread has become nothing more than a “let’s play with the trolls” thread. If you think this is a good thing, I don’t know what to say to you.

  71. kasinca Says:

Listen to Katie…don’t feed the bottom dwellers, the knuckle dragging, bootlicking, troglodyte morons. They are looking for attention. Playing with them is giving them what they want.

  72. Egreggious Says:

    Concerning troll-baiting:

I would like those of us who have a little trouble resisting the trolls to joi me in a pledge not to engage them for the first 75 posts of a thread in off-topic conversation. This gives some time for some serious on-topic discussion, while also allowing for the delayed fun of bashing the trolls. I know it’s a little silly, but it could be a middle ground that people could agree to. Such an agreement would be purely voluntary.

I’ve struggled with the issue of censorship after the Tired of Fighting incident the other day. I wonder if TP might consider two comment threads, one more or less unmoderated, and another that was either “members only” or heavily moderated. Such a structure would allow everyone to speak, but allow us to choose which we’d rather read and contribute to.

  73. kasinca Says:

TP should have some kind of registration to help censor the trolls.

but that na-na-na-boo-boo shit is tiresome…
it shows no intelligence or thoughtfulness…

it’s back to stepping around the poop for me…

  76. thersitz Says:

Free speech still has value. Even trolls have that right. The price of a free society includes listening to them. Most of the engagement with them, however, on almost any blog, is as puerile as the trollish comment itself. That, to me, is the bigger nuisance. If their comment furthers no argument, but merely reveals a relative baseness or obfuscation, why respond? But when positions are posed that can be legitimately responded to, they should be responded to. It’s pretty simple. We can all empathize with Katie’s concerns — but the notion that a “pledge” is needed on how best to engage seems in itself trollish. Half this thread has been engaged on that topic itself — so who is doing the hijacking?

Kristol should keep on with exactly the line of thought that he has pursued. It is pure gold in that he further diminishes his credibility with each such comment. The real problem comes from the MSM that should make a news story concerning his wildly inaccurate predictions that have spanned the course of the Iraq War. Indeed, the politics of this country would be quite different if the MSM would do its job. However, the MSM is controlled by corporate interests that sell their support for favorable economic treatment by the Republicans.

It is in the spirit of putting a face with the name that I give you this link. In hopes that the reality of it sinks into some. Out of respect for the man that I did not know and his friend, Tired of Fighting, I hope this doesn’t overreach my limits.

If you are old enough, you may remember that the people at home DID see the real world of Vietnam and when I was there, I felt it was supporting our cause, not hurting us, because it made people realize what war is. And there is nothing more terrible or more sad than sacrifices made for an illegal, unjust and immoral war!!!!

Regarding trolls — I have seen about three distinct categories of posters referred to as “trolls” on TP.

    1) The group of posters (or maybe it’s all the same person) who hurls insults, calls names, and fills up his posts with lots of exclamation points. This type of poster brings nothing of value to the discussion, and there is no value in stooping to his juvenile level. When we do, the entire thread becomes lost to what appears to be a playground fight among seven-year olds.

    2) The dittoheads who will chime into the thread subject with whatever sound bite comes from the right (example — “Clinton fired every ONE of his U.S. Attorneys!). These can be worth responding to — if only to debunk talking points from the right that have been done to death. But once the rebuttal has been made, they should be ignored.

    3) The posters who give a reasonably thoughtful argument for the conservative side. They stick to the topic at hand, provide some intellectual original thought, and don’t resort to playground language. THESE ARE NOT TROLLS. They are merely posters with differing viewpoints. We should value them here as much as we value any thoughtful posts. One of the hallmarks that differentiates us from the Rabid Right is that we are not so narrow-minded that we must close off all dissension, and we don’t cut off microphones as the right wing talking heads do. After all, intelligent debate makes this site interesting — when we get it.

It’s not just the obstructionism of a Republic Congress that gives the impression of an ineffective Congress. It is also the “I don’t recall” and “Executive Privilege” crowd.

I wonder how many Congresses in the past have had unusually low approval ratings when the president was also unpopular. I would imagine there would be a correspondence, as Americans have a tendency to lump the whole federal government into one big pile, with the Prez being the only recognizable face.

Here is a link, if anyone cares, about the civil war in Iraq.
Aggravating the situation is the presence of the foreign fighters, what Bushco would like to call Al qaeda. It is civil war by proxy too. It is Iran backed shia insurgents against Saudi backed Sunni insurgents.
According to the article, the bulk of the foreign insurgents come from…….
    Wait for it……..
Saudi Arabia. Bush’s buddies are backing the Sunni, while we support the Maliki govt. which is shia. And they are killing each other. I am just guessing here, but I would bet that both sides are getting their weapons from the same ultimate suppliers. It’s a win/win like the glory days of the 70s and 80s when we sold weapons to Iran and Iraq.
Good times. For the defense industries.
    Isn’t war a beautiful thing?

I have seen what kind of contribution you are capable of, and I have been hearing about some horrible posts you recently left that dishonored one of the fallen.
You have nothing substantive to contribute, you are just a cheerleader for the ‘dark side, if you will’ to quote one of your heroes. And like your other hero, also a cheerleader, you like to talk the talk but cannot walk the walk. That stuff is for the peasant classes.
I will never address you personally, or knowingly respond to one of your posts, again.
You should slink away in shame like GW did on 9/11.
I wish he had stayed hidden.
You do not deserve the few minutes I just spent. Go post on the Weekly Standard or World Net Daily. They will welcome you like a long lost drunken coked out frat brother.

Now, when I talk about Al qaeda in Iraq, heh heh, I’m gonna smoke em out, heh heh.
See, I got friends that’s gonna help me, that Maliki feller, and his Shias, heh heh, I think that’s what you call them, see, they’re gonna kill those Al Qaeda for us after we train them, and give them better weapons.
Now my friends, the Saudis, they can go over there, and they like them suicide bombs, and they go and blow up the Shia, cause the Saudis are with the Sunnis, heh heh, and them Shia, they blow up good.
So, now I can say, that it’s them Al Qaeda fellers that are doing all the suicide bombing, heh heh. And my friend Joe, you know, the dude I kissed? Wait now, that wasn’t no fruity kiss, heh heh, that was what you call like a mafia kiss, or kissin the Pope. Well, actually the Pope does dress kind of fruity. Anyway, Joe said he’d try to explain it to you. It’s them Iranians that are causing all the problems, so we’re gonna have to smoke ‘em out too. Or maybe nuke em out.
Now, the Saudis, they supply us with a bunch of oil, heh heh, and we kind of help them out once in a while. Military hardware, stuff like that. We got lots and we’re gearing up to make lots more.
So, like I’ve always said, I am a uniter. I have United all of our interests into Iraq. Why, soon you’ll even be able to get coca cola there.
    The surge Is working.
Al qaeda is on the run.
We need to give the surge more time to work.
Iraq is making significant progress towards critical benchmarks (oil law)
If we cut and run, the terrorists win. *(does not apply to Afghanistan)*

  123. Karim Says:

Kristol is once again living in his own dimension.

  124. William B. Jenaen Says:

The thing I don’t get is why is this guy allowed access to any medium? Forgetting his politics for a moment, Kristol is simply wrong, consistently. Why would any network put him on to spew his errors, and why would anyone take him seriously? Were he in business with clients to satisfy with his judgment, he’d last a week.

  125. Devil's Advocate Says:

Right, Bill Kristol! Iraq is n ot in the throes of a civil war. That is why Shiite/Sunni neighborhoods are being subjected to expulsions (and worse) by Sunni/Shiite militias. That is why 1,000,000 Iraqis have fled the country, and 2,000,000 are displaced within the country.

Kristol is not even an idiot. Someone who sticks to his fanatical views no matter what evidence is presented to the contrary is clearly mentally ill. In Kristol’s case, he is also dangerous since he is whipping up warmongering feelings. Kristol needs to be put away in an institution for the criminally insane.

  126. Mark Says:

You are doing a great service for your country, Mr. Kristol, clearly showing all but the stupidist 28% of its citizenry that only deranged, sheep-like NeoCons are stupid enough to fall for the lies and mindless warmongering of the current corrupt, crooked president and his criminal cabal. Keep it up!

  129. AR Says:

It’s pointless to comment on Kristol anymore. He doesn’t speak for the american people(not that he ever did). Just a small group of right-wing bozos that realize their time has past. From now till Bush’s last day in office we’re going to hear a lot of phoney rationalization and outright lies. Again, pointless.

  130. Thad Says:

I’d be a lot less bothered by Kristol if they’d just pass a rule stating that every time he appears on TV, the words “NOTE: Every single thing this man has said in the past 10 years has been wrong” appeared next to him.
