BREAKING: Reid To Force All-Night Filibuster On Iraq Withdrawal

BREAKING: Reid To Force All-Night Filibuster On Iraq Withdrawal»

Moments ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that in response to conservative obstructionism, he plans to force war supporters to physically remain in the Senate and filibuster Iraq withdrawal legislation.

Reid accused conservatives of “protecting the President rather than protecting our troops” by “denying us an up or down vote on the most important issue our country faces.” He said that if a vote on the Reed/Levin Iraq legislation is not allowed today or tomorrow, he will keep the Senate in session “straight through the night on Tuesday” and force a filibuster. From Reid’s speech:

Republicans are using a filibuster to block us from even voting on an amendment that could bring the war to a responsible end. They are protecting the President rather than protecting our troops.

They are denying us an up or down — yes or no — vote on the most important issue our country faces.

I would like to inform the Republican leadership and all my colleagues that we have no intention of backing down.

If Republicans do not allow a vote on Levin/Reed today or tomorrow, we will work straight through the night on Tuesday.

The American people deserve an open and honest debate on this war, and they deserve an up or down vote on this amendment to end it.

UPDATE: Watch the video:

OpenLeft, Firedoglake and others have also called for Congress to call the conservatives’ bluff and force them to filibuster the Levin-Reed Iraq bill.

From now until the recess, the only legislation offered by the Dems should be for the Impeachment and trial of Bush, Cheney, Gonzales, and their minions. The Thugs can filibuster away - just keep introducing Bills and forcing the thugs hand.

…but, if the republicans are stuck in the senate all night, how will they visit their hookers?

  14. CT_V1 Says:

Typical of Harry “undertaker-looking” Reid. That kook would love to operate in darkness. Too bad he’s a wannabe and a pussy.

Harry’s other arsenal component: misuse of the word ‘incompetent.’

  15. Justice Says:

Don’t back down! Force these slimeballs to show what they really are, cowards who do not support our overworked and underpaid troops! Forcing them to do deployment after deployment after deployment with no break is cruel. They talk about “more troops” but we don’t HAVE ANY more troops! If they want to talk “more troops” then they better start talking about a draft, because that is the ONLY way these warmonger Rerthugs will get more troops. They have worn down the troops in the field and NO ONE is signing up to get in the middle of their civil war that WE HELPED exacerbate by invading their country and trying to occupy it for no reason other than MONEY.
Shame on ALL Republicans. Shame on ANYONE who supports this idiot President and his minions. All they care about is “winning” they don’t have a CLUE, there is NO WIN to be had in Iraq.
Force the filibuster, force them to show their OBSTRUCTIONIST ways, force their hand Harry!
And tomorrow, FILE THE CONTEMPT CITATION for Harriet “no show” Miers if she doesn’t comply by tomorrow. Enough is enough, stop these criminals!

  39. John from Taos Says:

As nice as this sounds, I STILL don’t believe a word of it. Look for the “threat” of keeping Senators up all night to result in a glorious, meaningless deal of some horrible kind.

  41. Son of Alabastera Says:

This will never work because dems dont have the constitution to stay up late; being the limp-wristed noodles they are, they need their beauty sleep. One look at Pelosi would tell you that she needs about fifty years of straight sack time.

Do make me start asking “why” questions!

    Such as:

“Why does Harry Reid hate sleep?”

  46. francis Says:

Maybe they should wait longer on any legislation relating to Iraq. It seems like slowly but surely the republicans are breaking rank and speaking in opposition to the war. Give it time and gain support rather than force this legislation before fellow legislators are ready.

  47. Gerald Gibson Says:

Get those senators some of those stacker “dietary supplements” let them stay up for days until they break the will of those that have protected Saudi Arabia from paying for 911 and have shamed Americas name by waging a war of aggression against Iraq instead… not just one night… do as Mike Gravel keeps calling for… an unending debate until they cant hack it any more… shame THEM…. as they have shamed US.

  48. Chris Says:

THIS is why we voted for you, thank god. Sadly the democrats will have to apply this tactic until the republicans lose their majority. Just make sure the world is watching, I know I’ll actually watch CSPAN tonight and I’m not really one for watching TV.

  49. Tony S. Says:

Its a proven fact that Rove will simply turn on his propaganda machine and get this all-nighter squashed. Democrats are simply too honest and forthright to deal with these corrupt republicans; dems have proven that honesty throughout their tenure.

  50. Jeremy Says:

Wow. This must be really scaring the trolls. CT, Mr P, and ‘Unvarnished Truth’, in 39 posts? And Mr. P shown up in multiple postings? Daaaaaaayyyyuuuuum.

And on topic: HECK YEAH! ‘Bout freakin’ time. Keep doing it, Reid. Keep doing it, until either they cowtow or it’s posted far and wide for the entire US to see. Republicans, once the Up or Down party, ain’t so Up or Down anymore. Let’s erode their support some more. I like being in the largest group of the three….maybe my dad, Dem hating Republican he once was, will go I.

    ;)

  51. Marie Says:

Yes! This is what must be done. Let the public see who are the obstructionists; let them see who places party over persons; let the public see who are loyal to Bush for merely political reasons. Then let the public remember this when they come up for reelection.

  52. Robert Says:

    Mr President,

Why do Republicans now HATE Up or Down votes?

  53. MsJ Says:

He should have done this for the Dodd amendment last week! But thank goodness they are finally getting a clue!!

  54. Son of Alabastera Says:

    Update from AP:

“Senator Reid says his all-nighter is going to symbolic in nature and that he will try his best to dream about breaking the filibuster as he sleeps soundly through the night.”

    F’ING TROLLS!

Meanwhile, after the threat, I’m curious as to what the approval rating of Congress will be.
    My prediction: Much more favorable.

Yeah, your fellow leftinites were reminding us of our “scuurd” state during the VP Cheney/funding cutoff thread.

Cheney’s funding is cut forever, so I suppose our “fear” was a real negative.

  64. Marie Says:

One more thing, Harry, call on your friend, Nancy Pelosi and tell her to put impeachment back on the table.
As scholars have said: the Constitution is in crisis today — impeachment is the cure.
Impeachment need not even mean that the criminals must leave office; the felons could remain in office (horror of horrors), but the proper procedural tool would have been implemented that would prevent the precedent of having an executive branch with unlimited power.

I think they have waited long enough on legislation relating to Iraq. We should not have to wait until the republicans are ready to do something.

  80. francis Says:

The problem Art (as I see it anyway), is that regardless of the tactics, these people will not vote against the war just yet. Even if the legislation passes, Bush will veto, and without the support that I think we should wait for, it will die.

  82. Krazny Says:

Wow this really has the trolls worked up. I can almost see the spittle hitting the monitor.

On topic, I am hopeful, but this also means that Ried, and the rest of the dems need to stand up, and stick to their guns. Force the republicans who whined about having to work 5 days a week to continue working. sooner or later they will get sleepy and want their naps.

It also shows resolve to the American people, which is why the troll is freaking out. If the general public feels that dems can protect them better, and create a stable and non-crazy government. It will relegate the republicans to the backwater of politics for the next 50 years.

  83. Blackwater Says:

Reid had to get permission from Kos and MorOn.org before he could stand up and put on the warpaint. Wait….maybe the paper tigers here at TP made their thoughts known and pushed the good senator…wow, there is some clout here at TP.

  86. hellinabucket Says:

A year ago the republicans were talking about taking away the fillibuster and all the spineless trolls were goosestepping to that. Now look at the rats.

    Francis,
We cannot continue to wait until there is enough to override a veto.
We have to be able to tell which of the republicans are serious about taking a stand against the president. The ones who are up for reelection next are most in peril, and they know it. They are all too aware that their consitituents are watching very closely what they are doing.

It is a process, and we cannot wait until all the cards are in place and all the stars are alligned before positive action can be taken. It’s time to start leading them down the path.

“Obstructionist” is a word libs pull out to try and paint repubs as doing something wrong, just as you have tried to disguise “liberal” with “progressive”.

I have no prob with having pols present during this operation, they certainly get paid enough, they can do some of this aggravating work like the rest of us. I just think that Reid, being the shallow, sallow, noodley corpse that he is, isnt believable as a strong leader.

  103. Jeremy Says:

Krazny, I wouldn’t go so far as to say ‘next fifty years’. Fifty years is 2 and a half generations. Don’t fall into the same trap the Republicans fell into. ‘100 year majority’, anyone?

Unless people are far stupider than I think they are, this is good for at least 4 years of Democratic control, if the dems are at least somewhat competent (read: Don’t royally screw the pooch). If they play this well, Republicans have 8 to 12 years of minority status ahead of them. Alot depends on what happens in the Democrats half of the house in the future, as well as how well the US holds up afterwards. In the long term, however, I think political forces will shift the Republicans back into power by 2030, maybe as early as in the 2020s. Assuming the Democrats will last until 2060 can scuttle that particular ship, bringing a Republican majority return in the 2010s…

And keep their heads in the sand when it comes to domestic issues, it will be longer then 4 years. Unless the dems royally screw up, like Clinton did with his affair. I am willing to bet, that without the lewinsky scandal hanging around the neck of the Gore, it would not have mattered how many votes the republicans stole in 200 to get Bush elected.

Harry Reid isn’t exactly bright. His tactic will backfire, it’s a no-brainer.

    Reid found his balls!

Too bad he lost them when he gave the President a blank check. But I suppose we can forgive him if this works. Of course, there’s still blood on his hands…

Alright, we’re now up to 5 trolls in 109 posts, with Mr. P, CT, and blackwater coming out. Maaan, this must be big with them. And the sad thing is it’s such a halting first step! And I know they’ll crow to the high heavens when Reid is forced to back down. Maybe hoping to discourage us from pushing hard for this again?

What’s got the trolls so worked up?

Ah ha ha ha ha ha

    Thanks…I needed a good laugh.

First, if you can’t call the Repukes mapping out a strategy for blocking all Democratic legislation until the August recess ‘obstructionist’, I’d really like to see in what context you’d deem the word fitting.

Second, ‘obstructionist’ was a perfectly good word for you trolls to bandy about during the last Congress…what’s wrong with it now?

There’s more to your post, but, sadly, it merits no reply.

NO Brainer CT? Did you get medical training from Frist?

Don’t you want to see the republicans stand up and vote what they were told to, or what they believe in? Their vote is the voice of the people. A fillibuster tries to quiet that voice.

The panic in the trolls postings are palpable. Amazing how much their positions can change about the value of the fillibuster.

The time to wait, was four years ago. The time to act is now. If the Democrats get their bill vetoed, guess what? They can just present another one, and another one, and another one until finally the Reps who are going to break away do so because they have no choice.

Keep the pressure on the Republicans and they will collapse, because they are a weak and cowardly movement made up of a weak and cowardly people.

That said, if Bush continues to veto Democrat bills, he is going to hit a point where the next thing out of Congress he sees are articles of impeachment. If the Dems aren’t going to be able to get anything else done anyway, they may as well play to their base.

  134. hellinabucket Says:

Listen you knuckle dragger, we CAN find some common ground here. The repubs can simply resurrect Pelosi’s ‘Minority Bill of Rights’ and get an equal say on whatever the majority decides.

  136. Egreggious Says:

    Mr. President,

There is a part of me that wishes you actually were innocent of defaming a fallen Soldier.

There is a part of me that wishes you knew what it felt like to be unjustly accused of an evil act, and to be persecuted for it nonetheless.

Then you might get an inkling of what it might be like to be handed over to the authorities in return for a mere bounty, to be carted off to a fortress on Cuba’s shores, to be tortured within an inch of your life, with all deaf to your pleas of innocence, with no habeas corpus, no access to a court to hear your side of the story, locked forever in a dank, dark cell accused of a crime with no one there to prove you didn’t commit it.

Whine, as you did last night, about your ill-treatment. This is nothing. This is but a little cyberspace ridicule in a place you choose to frequent of your own free will. This is no Gitmo.

And don’t bother to complain of injustice. You have sh*t upon the Constitution, showed no regard for the rule of law, and cheered when a man who had committed treason was set free by a president with complicity in the crime. Don’t bother to talk to me about justice. Don’t bother to talk to me about decency. Don’t bother to talk to me about America. You have no idea what these things are, punk. Take your case to the Attorney General.

Your very existence is an insult to every Soldier who fought and died for principles you cannot begin to grasp. Your attempt to insult one of those Soldiers here was simply the last straw.

I’m taking you on, motherf***er. I’m taking you on, as you blissfully sit in your mother’s dress in your basement enjoying those remaining freedoms that American Soldiers in the past have fought so hard to win for you.

And when, at last, there is a knock on the door and they come for you, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

There is a part of me that wishes you actually were innocent.

And there is a part of me that doesn’t give a damn.

  138. JMOHR Says:

This is a good first step on the part of the Democrats. Ratings for Congress and the Congressional Democrats have fallen because they have failed to take aggressive action on this issue. The Democrats need to force votes on the Republicans in a number of areas that will demonstrate that they are blocking the will of the American people. The Republicans publicly stated that their strategy was to act as obstructionists to prevent any significant legislation by the Democrats. They need to be forced to demonstrate their commitment in areas such as Iraq, campaign reform and other significant areas. The Dems need to develop a commercial citing the Republicans saying that they would act as obstructionists and highlighting the latest legisaltion killed by the Repbublicans with a list in the background of others bills obstructed with the message that progress can only be made with larger Democratic control in both houses.

I can’t see the Congress winning the withdrawal of troops battle, not right now anyway, and not simply by trying over and over again. From New Scientist:

‘The DNA sequence of the anthrax sent through the US mail in 2001 has been revealed and confirms suspicions that the bacteria originally came from a US military laboratory. The data released uses codenames for the reference strains against which the attack strain was compared. The two reference strains that appear identical to the attack strain most likely originated at the US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick (USAMRIID), Maryland.

The new work also shows that substantial genetic differences can emerge in two samples of an anthrax culture separated for only three years. This means the attacker’s anthrax was not separated from its ancestors at USAMRIID for many generations.’

    In other words, durrrrr.

    francis

Frankly, what other issues? The Reps are going to fight every one of them and there will be a veto if any of them pass. You can take healthcare, the enviroment, stem cell research, gun control, abortion, religion in your schools, the repeal of the Patriot Act etc… and not a single issue will be decided.

Iraq is the line in the sand. It is the big issue, it is the elephant in the room, and it is urgent because every hour wasted on it coming to a resolution costs peoples lives.
