BREAKING: Reid To Force All-Night Filibuster On Iraq Withdrawal

Moments ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that in response to conservative obstructionism, he plans to force war supporters to physically remain in the Senate and filibuster Iraq withdrawal legislation.

Reid accused conservatives of “protecting the President rather than protecting our troops” by “denying us an up or down vote on the most important issue our country faces.” He said that if a vote on the Reed/Levin Iraq legislation is not allowed today or tomorrow, he will keep the Senate in session “straight through the night on Tuesday” and force a filibuster. From Reid’s speech:

Republicans are using a filibuster to block us from even voting on an amendment that could bring the war to a responsible end. They are protecting the President rather than protecting our troops.

They are denying us an up or down — yes or no — vote on the most important issue our country faces.

I would like to inform the Republican leadership and all my colleagues that we have no intention of backing down.

If Republicans do not allow a vote on Levin/Reed today or tomorrow, we will work straight through the night on Tuesday.

The American people deserve an open and honest debate on this war, and they deserve an up or down vote on this amendment to end it.

OpenLeft, Firedoglake and others have also called for Congress to call the conservatives’ bluff and force them to filibuster the Levin-Reed Iraq bill.

  16. Justice says:

Don’t back down! Force these slimeballs to show what they really are, cowards who do not support our overworked and underpaid troops! Forcing them to do deployment after deployment after deployment with no break is cruel. They talk about “more troops” but we don’t HAVE ANY more troops! If they want to talk “more troops” then they better start talking about a draft, because that is the ONLY way these warmonger Rerthugs will get more troops. They have worn down the troops in the field and NO ONE is signing up to get in the middle of their civil war that WE HELPED exacerbate by invading their country and trying to occupy it for no reason other than MONEY.
Shame on ALL Republicans. Shame on ANYONE who supports this idiot President and his minions. All they care about is “winning” they don’t have a CLUE, there is NO WIN to be had in Iraq.
Force the filibuster, force them to show their OBSTRUCTIONIST ways, force their hand Harry!

Get those senators some of those stacker “dietary supplements” let them stay up for days until they break the will of those that have protected Saudi Arabia from paying for 911 and have shamed Americas name by waging a war of aggression against Iraq instead… not just one night… do as Mike Gravel keeps calling for… an unending debate until they cant hack it any more… shame THEM…. as they have shamed US.

  49. Chris says:

THIS is why we voted for you, thank god. Sadly the democrats will have to apply this tactic until the republicans lose their majority. Just make sure the world is watching, I know I’ll actually watch CSPAN tonight and I’m not really one for watching TV.

  50. Tony S. says:

Its a proven fact that Rove will simply turn on his propaganda machine and get this all-nighter squashed. Democrats are simply too honest and forthright to deal with these corrupt republicans; dems have proven that honesty throughout their tenure.

  51. Jeremy says:

Wow. This must be really scaring the trolls. CT, Mr P, and ‘Unvarnished Truth’, in 39 posts? And Mr. P shown up in multiple postings? Daaaaaaayyyyuuuuum.

And on topic: HECK YEAH! ‘Bout freakin’ time. Keep doing it, Reid. Keep doing it, until either they cowtow or it’s posted far and wide for the entire US to see. Republicans, once the Up or Down party, ain’t so Up or Down anymore. Let’s erode their support some more. I like being in the largest group of the three….maybe my dad, Dem hating Republican he once was, will go I.

    ;)

  52. Marie says:

Yes! This is what must be done. Let the public see who are the obstructionists; let them see who places party over persons; let the public see who are loyal to Bush for merely political reasons. Then let the public remember this when they come up for reelection.

One more thing, Harry, call on your friend, Nancy Pelosi and tell her to put impeachment back on the table.
As scholars have said: the Constitution is in crisis today — impeachment is the cure.

It also shows resolve to the American people, which is why the troll is freaking out. If the general public feels that dems can protect them better, and create a stable and non-crazy government. It will relegate the republicans to the backwater of politics for the next 50 years.

  84. Blackwater says:

Krazny, I wouldn’t go so far as to say ‘next fifty years’. Fifty years is 2 and a half generations. Don’t fall into the same trap the Republicans fell into. ‘100 year majority’, anyone?

Unless people are far stupider than I think they are, this is good for at least 4 years of Democratic control, if the dems are at least somewhat competent (read: Don’t royally screw the pooch). If they play this well, Republicans have 8 to 12 years of minority status ahead of them. Alot depends on what happens in the Democrats half of the house in the future, as well as how well the US holds up afterwards. In the long term, however, I think political forces will shift the Republicans back into power by 2030, maybe as early as in the 2020s. Assuming the Democrats will last until 2060 can scuttle that particular ship, bringing a Republican majority return in the 2010s…

    Thanks…I needed a good laugh.

First, if you can’t call the Repukes mapping out a strategy for blocking all Democratic legislation until the August recess ‘obstructionist’, I’d really like to see in what context you’d deem the word fitting.

Second, ‘obstructionist’ was a perfectly good word for you trolls to bandy about during the last Congress…what’s wrong with it now?

There’s more to your post, but, sadly, it merits no reply.

The time to wait, was four years ago. The time to act is now. If the Democrats get their bill vetoed, guess what? They can just present another one, and another one, and another one until finally the Reps who are going to break away do so because they have no choice.

Keep the pressure on the Republicans and they will collapse, because they are a weak and cowardly movement made up of a weak and cowardly people.

That said, if Bush continues to veto Democrat bills, he is going to hit a point where the next thing out of Congress he sees are articles of impeachment. If the Dems aren’t going to be able to get anything else done anyway, they may as well play to their base.

There is a part of me that wishes you actually were innocent of defaming a fallen Soldier.

There is a part of me that wishes you knew what it felt like to be unjustly accused of an evil act, and to be persecuted for it nonetheless.

Then you might get an inkling of what it might be like to be handed over to the authorities in return for a mere bounty, to be carted off to a fortress on Cuba’s shores, to be tortured within an inch of your life, with all deaf to your pleas of innocence, with no habeas corpus, no access to a court to hear your side of the story, locked forever in a dank, dark cell accused of a crime with no one there to prove you didn’t commit it.

Whine, as you did last night, about your ill-treatment. This is nothing. This is but a little cyberspace ridicule in a place you choose to frequent of your own free will. This is no Gitmo.

And don’t bother to complain of injustice. You have sh*t upon the Constitution, showed no regard for the rule of law, and cheered when a man who had committed treason was set free by a president with complicity in the crime. Don’t bother to talk to me about justice. Don’t bother to talk to me about decency. Don’t bother to talk to me about America. You have no idea what these things are, punk. Take your case to the Attorney General.

Your very existence is an insult to every Soldier who fought and died for principles you cannot begin to grasp. Your attempt to insult one of those Soldiers here was simply the last straw.

I’m taking you on, motherf***er. I’m taking you on, as you blissfully sit in your mother’s dress in your basement enjoying those remaining freedoms that American Soldiers in the past have fought so hard to win for you.

And when, at last, there is a knock on the door and they come for you, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

There is a part of me that wishes you actually were innocent.

And there is a part of me that doesn’t give a damn.

  139. JMOHR says:

This is a good first step on the part of the Democrats. Ratings for Congress and the Congressional Democrats have fallen because they have failed to take aggressive action on this issue. The Democrats need to force votes on the Republicans in a number of areas that will demonstrate that they are blocking the will of the American people. The Republicans publicly stated that their strategy was to act as obstructionists to prevent any significant legislation by the Democrats. They need to be forced to demonstrate their commitment in areas such as Iraq, campaign reform and other significant areas. The Dems need to develop a commercial citing the Republicans saying that they would act as obstructionists and highlighting the latest legisaltion killed by the Repbublicans with a list in the background of others bills obstructed with the message that progress can only be made with larger Democratic control in both houses.

    From New Scientist:

‘The DNA sequence of the anthrax sent through the US mail in 2001 has been revealed and confirms suspicions that the bacteria originally came from a US military laboratory. The data released uses codenames for the reference strains against which the attack strain was compared. The two reference strains that appear identical to the attack strain most likely originated at the US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick (USAMRIID), Maryland.

The new work also shows that substantial genetic differences can emerge in two samples of an anthrax culture separated for only three years. This means the attacker’s anthrax was not separated from its ancestors at USAMRIID for many generations.’

    In other words, durrrrr.

Frankly, what other issues? The Reps are going to fight every one of them and there will be a veto if any of them pass. You can take healthcare, the enviroment, stem cell research, gun control, abortion, religion in your schools, the repeal of the Patriot Act etc… and not a single issue will be decided.

And then there is the whole conspiracy about the liberal media. You know, that conspiracy that names Time Magazine, the same Magazine that named Bush man of the year, as part of the ~evil~ liberal conspiracy to brainwash America.

And then there is the whole board game conspiracy, whereby ~evil~ liberals are turning kids to the devil by making them play DnD. Not to mention what liberals are doing in hollywood and sillicon valley.

Your party won in 1992, and you spent the next 8 yrs blaming everyone in that administration for mistakes not so related to governing. Bill Clinton was your anti-christ because he got a little head? No. He was destroyed because Republicans needed the power.

Forward to 2002 – Cons have all of the power: house, senate, and executive. No one to question any of it. Powers were abused and people have died due to those abuses. “Free market capitalism” is for business. “Democracy” is for governing. The line was blurred and this administration has made a business out of pain.

Forward to present – Evangelicals need to read the Bible, for the first shall be last. Evangelicals are the modern day Pharisees. They would hang the real Jesus Christ again, just as the Pharisees did back then. They praise George Bush as higher than a man, a prophet, and their influence has changed the make-up of our country’s foreign policy. Modern day crusades. The worst thing public officials can have is an influx of money and/or religion. I must admit, the religion has kept him from slaughtering his own citizens. Christianity is the only thing that seperates Bush from Stalin. Stalin would slaughter anyone that stood in his way. Bush only slaughters the people that Christians allow him to kill.

I am scared to death of the direction we are headed, and so are the trolls.
Trolls are scared that they may lose their guns, war, and general crass existence.

Saddam kept Al Qaeada out. Much as though he dispised America, he and Osama dispised each other even more (In part because Saddam wasn’t all that religious – he had alchohol on his premises and women in his government, in part because Saddam was a narcistic little monster who didn’t want the competition.)

Anyway, after Saddam was topled by America, Iraq, which is far more valuable ground then Afghanistan, the major thing keeping Osama out was removed. Osama has since moved in, with the basic hope of keeping America stuck there – and thus spending its money trying to fight a stalemate against an enemy which is only going to grow stronger over a period of time.

So long as America is occupied in Iraq, Osama is free to focus on building terror networks elsewhere, such as the UK, America’s most trusted ally. Further the occupation is a major propaganda coup for those opposed to America. A coup which has thus far worked out better then hoped due to America making some downright stupid moves (Such as the introduction of torture.)

While Osama hasn’t had things go all his way (For example the Iraqi people know precisely where they fit into this plan and are not in favour of Osama Bin Laden) this strategy has largely worked, with America’s other enemies growing bolder as America’s military starts to get overstretched fighting a relatively small portion of Osama’s forces.

It is a shrewd strategy and ruthless in its execution, but it has a few weaknesses. Osama cannot take Iraq, and if America withdrew he knows he would lose against any one of them major factions in Iraq.

A withdrawal would neutralise his strategy within a few years because he is a Saudi Arabian from a Iranian family who is trying to gain power in a country which has always opposed both nations.

If the UK attacked you, the world would back America. The world doesn’t like agressors. Robert Mugabe is probably the most evil man in the world right now: He has done, or is currently doing everything America accused Saddam of doing. Still, if South Africa, Zimbabwe’s nearest neighbour invaded we would have sanctions placed on us.

This is because while Zimbabwe is a hellhole which has a massively negative impact on South Africa, it hasn’t even hinted at threatening our borders and we do not have the self-interest level pretext required to justify a war in Zimbabwe.

    Mr. President

I’ve actually read Marx. His theory is crap based purely on the fact that under his utopian system, which has never been tried, there is nothing to incentivise people to outperform their baseline natural abilities (EG: Go to school and become a doctor.) It is a system which lacks higher elements on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs then security, as status is out.

It hasn’t been tried before simply on the basis of what was required to try it, not being present in the previous “Communist” regimes. It required a highly educated industrialised nation to kick off, Russia, Cuba and China were all largely agricultural nations. Indeed, America and England are actually closer then Soviet Russia was, to Marx’s ideal state.

Of course, as a rightwinger you use Marx as a insult, instead of actually acknowledging his impact on economic theory, particularly the theories of your favourite economic thinkers. While his theory was wrong, there were things he got absolutely right, such as the impact of mechanisation on manual labour for instance.

Marx was the father of modern economics, and his theories have their echoes in all other economic theories, including conservative ones. Of course, no American conservative can quite acknowledge this.

So call me a Marxist, I read the book, disagreed with a lot of it, but I understand the theory at least. I know what you are calling me. I don’t think you really do.

Have you seen any reports that would show that? The only news item I saw earlier was on Fox News and they didn’t touch the word fillibuster. It must have been put on the Rove “bad word” list and hasn’t been taken off yet.

Not sure why they are debating this, just win this Ebay Auction if you want the solution to Iraq: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150141399174

Top bid is $10,000,000 atm, with 5 days left. Sounds like a good deal considering we’ve spent trillions on the war.

  251. Pete Sikora says:

Didn’t the Republicans spend the Alito and Roberts confirmations saying how bad filibusters are? Weren’t they considering the “nuclear option”? Why isn’t the media reporting the obvious hypocrisy?

CT, if you supported the decision by Bush to commute Libby then you are all that has been said about you and more.

That’s the constitution for ya, dopey. Yes, the constitution you keep mouthing about. Drop the issue, you’re not the President. It’s his power and it’s perfectly legal, which negates the following blubber-sentence:

If you support this then you you have pissed on the constitution. Whether you think you did or not, you did.

I also think you don’t understand the term “troll” either.

I think I do. The Dummycrats wrote the dictionary, and they’re livin’ the terms.

  258. hellinabucket says:

Up or down vote. The republicans were pushing the “Nuclear Option” a while back. What happened to that concept? Not so enticing when it’s them who want to threaten with a fillibuster.

CT, show where the facts weren’t thrown back in your face. 2nd thought, start from here on out. Can you stand for this current administration? If so then stand on the words and deeds of this administration, not insults.

You believe the direction we are going is correct? Then say so but don’t throw childish crap like Mr. President does.

There can be differences without being ignorant. If you continue your current course, you are deserving of all the venom that is spewed back at you.

  259. hellinabucket says:

One of the several things Libby was found guilty of is obstruction of justice. Now that the obstruction has been removed why hasn’t GW forced for the end result which is who divulged a covert agent during wartime?

Very serious crime that hasn’t been forgotten or been closed.

I support my soldiers my troops because they are the only ones that have the sack to stand up and do whats right WEATHER THEY BELIEVE IN IT OR NOT they still are serving, many are my friend. So those of you that believe that protecting your freedom is illegal thats fine if you have your way it will only lead to another attack and another someone must stand to defend me and mine, being a former soldier I would have to say that I give my soldiers 100% of my support.

OK, so I’ll break my rule to give our resident bridge-dweller a clue.

Actually, young troll-san, when TP was contacted about the rampant troll problem, their specific response was, “We have tried to ban the IPs for the problem posters, but they immediately change IPs.” Which, by the way, lends credence to the idea that perhaps you are using a program such as Megaphone.

So, there goes that theory on how to get rid of you, grasshopper.

But then, I’m sure such an explanation as to why such evidence proves nothing is all just GREEK to you. Hmmm?

  266. Me_again says:

That’s right, Republican preached for up and down votes but they won’t give Dems the up and down vote they had wanted Dems to give them.

Reid accused conservatives of “protecting the President rather than protecting our troops”

With 70% percent of the country wanting out of Iraq – the GOP is protecting the President and disregarding their VOTERS.

The American people want out of this war – why doesn’t GOP care about the voters – they spit on their voters and cater to Bush and Cheney.

Because they are playing political gamesmanship with peoples lives… I will be very shocked if they stay up even one night let alone untill they make an actual difference… that would take some standing for principal which they have proven they wont do… they are too scared of the boos that would come at first…

Vote Ron Paul. He never cared about the boos… what is right is right. The Constitution was made to keep government small… yet we want things like universal health care…. we cant have it both ways… If we want to protect the Constitution the government must be brought under control… if we want universal health care AND protect the Constituition then we must find a way that brings universal healthcare (as an example only) without it being another toy that the government gets to play with… Maybe something like Fannie Mae except all citizens are given shares that cannot be sold? I dont know, but the constant back and forth of the left and right is stupid… the damn Constitution is getting stretched out by all the back and forth… there must be a better way.

  269. Robert says:

I can’t believe what this country has come to, but i sure am glad as f*** that some people like Reid are still around….. where would we ever get without powerful people with balls? I swear it happens in any conflict…. theres always one senator or one someone that just stands up for everyone who doesn’t have a voice, which is sad (in a democracy?)

please get something done, you can’t keep backing down, its all force or give up…. and giving up doesn’t mean giving in… ;-)

    Jeremy,
Most of the trolls I’ve seen concerning this are basement hiders with empty scrotums who have NEVER even been in stateside service.
They are the same type of chickenshit cowards who are on the neogoon side of the aisle in congress.
In other words, they have the same basis for their comments as graham had for his whining to Jim Webb on russert.

  291. C Gordon says:

Not a bad idea Sen. Reed allowing a genuine RECORD whatever the results to “smoke out” the elected officials so they are not returned to DC. I weep for the REP who know they’ve ceceded freedoms to the extreme right religious zelots which weakens, divides, and destroys us all. Bravo! the REP have a legacy history will leave with the Nazi identities of Cheney and Bush but those remaining unpatriotic REP in DC who talk of supporting our army soldiers DIE and our forces weaken premenantly. Bravo for REP who first are patriotic and have courage to change, and shame on those idiots remaining loyal to a dictator like President.

    IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY, NOW!

  293. Tina says:

If oil wasn’t involved and the Bushes weren’t one of the largest oil families in the States, the war would have already ended. IT’s almost as if he’s poopooing the fact that there are terrorist here in the States that need to be dealt with. For some reason he seems to think they’re still over there. Most likely they’re not. They’re not going to come into our country with a sign around they’re necks advertising the fact that they’re terriorists. Besides, the war over in Iraq is like Viet Nam. You can’t fight an enemy that knows how to live off the land of their own country. Most of the people have lived a very rough life and know what needs to be done to stay alive. They have lived the life of dodging bombs and bullets.

  294. William Akers says:

Well, finally Harry gave the apologists something to crow about. Their short memories seem to forget that Harry was filibustering not so long ago. Obviously they feel that payback is hell. Republicans cannot possibly come off looking worse than the Democrats do in general.

  295. Bob Hennessey says:

you pathetic liberals, like the bleeding hearts did not use the fillabuster for years to try to block everything. Republicans have plenty to say to last all night, if the liberals just listen they may learn something but I doubt it, it takes intelligence to learn.

  296. Bruce Gorton says:

    Bob Hennessey

Funny how you conservatives use the exact same language as 1980’s comic book supervillains, no?

  297. Graphictruth says:

I’m still in ignorance of the outcome, if there is one yet. But I went ahead and blogged it.

As I was trying to check out the story, I stumbled across this:

    clipped from news.yahoo.com

BAGHDAD – Nearly half of the foreign detainees held in Iraq are Saudi citizens, and lists of their names were given to Saudi officials during a recent visit by an Iraqi delegation, national security adviser Mouwaffak al-Rubaie said in remarks aired Monday.

Last week, al-Rubaie said before leaving for Saudi Arabia that the majority of the suicide bombers and “those who drive the vehicles to blow up our innocent civilians, Iraqis, are Saudis.” Al-Rubaie, who headed the delegation, said then “we need to stop the flow of suicide bombers, we need to stop the fatwas (religious edicts) coming from Saudis to justify the killings of innocent Iraqis.” In the interview with Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya, al-Rubaie said that he raised the issue of fatwas with officials in the kingdom and “we heard very good news.” He did not elaborate.

I think that really should ring some alarm bells about who is behind this war, and who’s going to benefit by it. Seeing as the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi, Bin Ladin is Saudi, Al-Queda is Saudi funded – and Bush wants to attack their mortal, religious enemy, Iran?

    Hm.

  298. ruth williams says:

Bin Ladin stated that they would beat America using the same methods as he assisited in defeating Russia. We absolutely must stay and win the war in the Middle East or be overcome on our own soil by cloned Bin Ladins. Afganistan’s future rests on our victory, as does ours.

There is nothing that we do over there in Irag that will be lasting, since everyone over there hates us anyway. Stop playing politics and bring our people home.

  300. rodeo says:

  301. elitehotel says:

Sorry Harry— turnabout is fair play!! You were just using this tactic not too long ago–The only difference is that the Rebublicans are fighting for something that Democrats don’t understand: Freedom and defeating an enemy that wants to kill all of us even Democrats–Leave (surrender) like a bunch of cowards and we give the Al Kaeda the bravado that they made us back down–You people don’t get it We must win or suffer the consequences of terrorist attacks here!! There is a treason why we have had NO terrorist attacks since 9-11 that is no accident!!

It is easy to shout little bumper sticker slogans when you really don’t understand the consequences of walking out on this conflict

  302. Virtue Lord Purple says:

There is no solution to the Iraq War. If Americans really want the war to end, and they truly care for their ‘Soldiers’, then they will immediately, without hesitation, cease and desist from driving their cars. Other than that, you have no one to blame but yourselves. Also, I have news for you folks. Bush is ‘The Leaker’.

    In the Name of Brutus

    Dames and Gents,

In times unprecedented and tinged with despair, it is appropriate to reflect on the founding of our great nation. It was not with George Washington, but with Brutus, and not the one who killed Caeser. There was another who rebelled against the tyrant monarchy of Rome, The Tarquins. He wrote the Roman Constitution that would stand for 500 years. His sons sided with the monarchy. The monarchy lost. So to punish his sons and found a perfect union, he immolated his own sons.
Machiavelli speaks fluently and voluminoulsy and voiciferously on this subject, in ‘The Discourses’, and yet is proved wrong on several counts by the miracle of America. He says that a nation founded in servitude, as America was a colony, will never win its freedom. He also says that a nation founded on fertile soil that is easily defended, will in time loose all of its freedoms because it will become, eventually, inevitably, sloth and sated, and will forget to protect them.
As regards ‘The DC Madam’, I am personally involved. You can view my involvement at http://www.maytheygetwhattheydeserve.com/KAT.html
Sometimes a mouse will lead you to a kat, and a kat can lead you to a rat and a rat, ironically, can lead you to the truth. And the truth, as they say, and as it is written, will set you free.
May all those who sincerely and patiently wait for freedom be free and may all those who desire to steal those freedoms find instead the dire consequences that accompany contempt for a great man like Brutus.

    As regards Machiavelli,
    eram sapiens tamen nefas
    And again,
vox vocis publicus est vox vocis deus

May The Republic stand forever and bring the Glory Of The World, with Dignity, into Its Treasury.

You all make this country sick, and you will lose in 2008. We are all onto your little pitiful game!

  305. Ernie Shirley - US ARMY RETIRED says:

I have lived through Viet Nam, etc, etc, and now Iraq. I have seen good men and women die “for their country” which is just about the highest honor you can place on someone. BUT, just as Viet Nam, we can’t win in Iraq. To win would mean killing millions – a price too high just to spread Christianity and the “western” ideals.

Before, Viet Nam helped our country prosper as far as money went – we manufactured the guns, the bullets, the bombs, the planes. Now we buy gunpowder, iron, depleted uranium, electronics (parts and knowledge), even most of our food – FROM NON-AMERICAN sources. 2 out of 3 of our factories are either closed, or looking to close. Most manufacturing, cleaning, building, repairing, creating – comes from illegal aliens (of one gender or another) and we wonder “What is happening?”

Yes, infortunately for the thousands who have already given their lives = we cannot win – those honorable ones have no final victory, no parade, no stories in the history books.

I have never believed in running, but when there is no possible victory, it’s time to just stop, come home, lick our wounds alone, and get on with our lives – AND DEMAND THAT THERE NEVER EVER BE ANOTHER SITUATION LIKE THIS. WE ELECT PRESIDENTS, WE ELECT CONGRESS – THEY REPRESENT US, THE CITIZENS, not big business, not illegal aliens, not the power hungry elite, but the working citizens of what was once the most intelligent country on earth.
