Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson has resigned.

Nicholson’s primary qualification for the VA job was serving as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1997 to 2000, “raising close to $380 million for the 2000 cycle.” In March, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) called for his resignation, noting that his appointment was purely political and looked “like a Brownie situation.”
UPDATE: In February, Nicholson tried to downplay the number of injured veterans, claiming that “a lot of them come in for dental problems.”
UPDATE II: In today’s press briefing, White House spokesman Tony Snow said that Nicholson plans to “stay on until October.”

good riddance. who’s the next flunkie?

Heckuva job supporting the troops there, Mr. President. While they’re fighting your vanity war in Iraq, you pretend to care about them–but once they get home, you’re happy to let them lie in piss-soaked sheets in rat-infested rooms, as long as your RNC bagman can have a cushy wingnut-welfare job. McCain has gone over the deep end imho
But yes, the replacement MUST be a veteran, enough of these political hacks that don’t give a sh*t about veterans and veteran issues.
And I still want Nicholson publicly executed for the deaths of Soldiers and Veterans under his watch. It is outragious what he did, and Bush for appointing a political hack.

1. How does sending our troops to Iraq, separating them form their families and loved ones, putting them in harm’s way, and keeping them there equal “supporting the troops”?
2. Why do those who claim to “honor their sacrifices” want them to continue sacrificing?
3. Why don’t those who bloviate about “supporting” and “honoring” the troops against an enemy they think threatens Western civilization actually, you know, put on combat boots and join them?

Funny how after four years of war in Iraq, war supporters still can’t answer these three simple questions:
July 17th, 2007 at 12:51 pmThey can’t? Well go on, what are your questions, I’ll answer ‘em.
Q
1. How does sending our troops to Iraq, separating them form their families and loved ones, putting them in harm’s way, and keeping them there equal “supporting the troops
A
It doesn’t. Those are the reasons why the troops need support.
Q
2. Why do those who claim to “honor their sacrifices†want them to continue sacrificing?
A
I don’t want any law-abiding, taxpaying, American citizen to do something that he or she does not want to do already. It’s his or her choice to enlist, but that doesn’t mean he or she does not deserve to be honored. In fact, that is more of a reason to honor him or her, since he or she does not have to sacrifice, but chooses to do so anyway.
Q
3. Why don’t those who bloviate about “supporting†and “honoring†the troops against an enemy they think threatens Western civilization actually, you know, put on combat boots and join them?
A
Some do, some don’t. We live in America, you know, the land of the Free! There are plenty of military enthusiasts who chose to train and condition themselves for this very situation, you know, putting on combat boots and protecting the American “Western” way of life from enemy threats. On the other hand, since we do live in America, you know, the land of the Free, other’s are free to pursue whatever may bring him or her happiness.
quick - everyone check the books - do inventories - to establish the extent of what he took with him - then call out the appropriate inspectors and enforcers - and give the vets his home address
July 17th, 2007 at 12:56 pmThis administration is so fixated on how ‘history will judge’ - the footnotes on incompetent ‘heads of’ being dismissed; fired or ’stepping down’ will be a distraction on reading the utter failure of this self anointed president.
July 17th, 2007 at 1:05 pmNicholson being dismissive by stating that most veterans came for dental appointments - give us a little credit for having some empathy/sympathy and knowing this administration is failing miserably addressing the medical needs of veterans.
He is a Vietnam veteran, a West Point grad who served 8 years of active duty and 22 years in the Army Reserves. He earned a Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Meritorious Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and two Air Medals.

July 17th, 2007 at 1:19 pm#62 You took the time to respond and by doing so only made a fool out of yourself. Lets examine your drivel.
A #1
It doesn’t. Those are the reasons why the troops need support.
Circular logic may work with the bottom 26% of the bell curve base but your Failure in Chief stated counters your claim wanting tropps to be there so they can then be home. Reference your talking point memo before typing.
A #2
I don’t want any law-abiding, taxpaying, American citizen to do something that he or she does not want to do already. It’s his or her choice to enlist, but that doesn’t mean he or she does not deserve to be honored. In fact, that is more of a reason to honor him or her, since he or she does not have to sacrifice, but chooses to do so anyway.
Transparent dodge. When they volunteered did they consent to breaking the Contract by the WH with extending deployments, changing stop gaps, multiple deployments beyond their agreement, and reducing time home with their families and cutting training? Are you stupid or ignorant?
A#3
Some do, some don’t. We live in America, you know, the land of the Free! There are plenty of military enthusiasts who chose to train and condition themselves for this very situation, you know, putting on combat boots and protecting the American “Western†way of life from enemy threats. On the other hand, since we do live in America, you know, the land of the Free, other’s are free to pursue whatever may bring him or her happiness.
I could do a dissertation on that drivel. Failure in Chief states we are in WWIII, mind your our civilization, our society is in peril but your arrogant ignorance is as dismissive as an optional choice as relevent to what tie to wear. You have to ask yourself is Failure in Chief lying or are you being played? We know the answer is both.
July 17th, 2007 at 1:21 pm“Troops shouldn’t be getting socialized medicine.” Give me a break!
What are they supposed to be getting? Double-CROSSed insurance that makes you BLUE in the face.
July 17th, 2007 at 1:25 pmTo Patrick1’s point — Yeah, it makes perfect sense to put our soldiers in a senseless war, blow their limbs off, expose them to chemicals for which long-term exposure effects aren’t known, and give them mental problems sufficient to deny them a good night’s sleep for years and years. Then send ‘em home and throw them to the mercy of the same health care system that screws everybody else.
I see a few possible effects:
1) Recruitment will be even more sparse than it is now, as more young people get a clue that their country will basically spit on them if they get hurt in the line of duty.
2) This would throw another spotlight on the dismal state of health care if discharged veterans cannot get the health care they need. Americans will be up in arms demanding a change — even louder than they are now.
3) Veterans with psychological problems will most likely go untreated, as many health plans don’t contain mental health benefits.
4) Eventually, some veteran with a severe case of PTSS will commit a horrific act of violence, causing many people to ask, “how could this have happened?”
On the other hand — if we DO fix our health care system in this country, guaranteeing health care for everyone who needs it, then we could eliminate the health services the VA provides as redundant.
July 17th, 2007 at 1:25 pmWar is good for AN economy, not necessarily THE economy and certainly not for the troops who are injured or die. Socialized medical care is good for the troops but not a money pit for the corporatists. Bush is more of a man who THINKS he’s God and I would trust him only if he would agree to be crucified.
July 17th, 2007 at 1:25 pm# 38 Troops shouldn’t be getting socialized medical care anyway.

Interesting point Patrick1 that I never thought of. While yes they “earned” the VA care by their Military Service. The care is government supported healthcare. In short a prototype for discussing universal healthcare.

Not just in Baltimore, ask the folks at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System about a lost “research” laptop!!!). Many VA nurses (including myself) are leaving the system never to return, managers and politicians are to blame.
July 17th, 2007 at 10:08 pmAnother one bites the dust.
July 18th, 2007 at 2:14 amIs Nicholson even a veteran?

You’re so right about the looks, big papa, but I think real Afghan hounds are probably more intelligent.
July 18th, 2007 at 8:11 amThe basic problem with the VA is that people like Bush have little interest in taking care of our nations veterans. Now, if there was a government department with the task of taking care of retired oil company CEO’s who are down to their last billion dollars, then you’d see some real concern.
July 18th, 2007 at 10:28 amPatrick1, I’m glad that there are A______S like you out there to remind me why I’m a Veteran. If people like you were put in the V.A. healthcare system for your healthcare you couuld really appreciate how your tax dollars are spent. Some of us 100% disabled Veterans cannot purchase healthcare insurance that would enable us to be able to see real doctors and receive needed healthcare. Those of us who have no other option other than the V.A. for our healthcare needs, often go without due to the incompetent doctors, that you Patrick1 have employed with your generous tax dollars. Put the draft back on and let Patrick1 get drafted so he can share in the FREE HEALTHCARE that he seems so concerned about and maybe just maybe he’ll get wounded and get to experience the pain that comes along with being a disabled Vet who HAS to use V.A. for their healthcare.
July 18th, 2007 at 3:37 pmThis WW2 Combat Vet goes to the VA hospitals often and there on the walls are both a large picture of the worst pres, next to him is this guy Nicholson, who many veterans have said to me, “It’s a wonder nobody hasn’t put mustaches on their pictures”. This Nicholson was a lacky, he sat by when Bush didn’t allow fotos of our flag draped returning dead troops. He was for this war judging by all the articals he had in the Legion and VFW magazines that support this fiasco for it’s membership. Too bad for us veterans, Bush still has the choice of picking his replacment.
July 18th, 2007 at 3:37 pmwell, one good thing; we won’t have to look at that squirrely face on the wall, next to king george. last year nicholson wrote ME a letter, saying I was not entitle to my husband’s benefits. ??? I only wrote the them, as to WHY HIS BENEFITS WERE TAKEN AWAY–when he received them since 1965, and he is a DAV! I won’t have to give him the bird, every time we have to pass his ugly mug. but thanx jimmy, cause i did my own work, and got back most of what those creeps owed him, plus a raise. the va disgusts me, the way they treat soldiers. I say send the creep back there.
July 18th, 2007 at 5:16 pmHey, the Dukester was a vet, started the Top Gun school and all, but once these reptiles start to see seven figures, they lose it, and go from being a warrior to a thief.
Its an endearing Repig qualification for high office…
July 23rd, 2007 at 7:50 pmGood grief - where is the thoughtful, productive dialog that actually would contribute toward the betterment of our society?
