In a closed-door meeting today, the House Intelligence Committee questioned Attorney General Alberto Gonzales about the “reasons behind Gonzales’ controversial 2004 visit to the hospital bedside of John Ashcroft, reportedly to pressure the ailing attorney general to endorse Bush’s surveillance program.” According to chairman Silvestre Reyes (D-TV), “Gonzales did not express any regret.”

“Stabilized” nice word, any info on the percentage?
And Congress are getting what is their due. Folding isn’t appreciated by the electorate. They were elected for a purpose (”Get us out of Iraq – double quick!”) and their numbers wil rise as soon as they heed what the electorate, “The People” (you know, You… their boss) have decided is to be done.
If they wont – well wait for the next elections. It looks as if they haven’t yet understood how seriously determined Americans are to change the ways of Washington.
July 19th, 2007 at 5:12 pmClinton did it too.

July 19th, 2007 at 5:17 pm“‘Stabilized’ nice word, any info on the percentage?”
It went from 35% in March to 33% in May to 34% in July, according to Zogby. That’s the best they can muster as “good news” for Bush. Pathetic.
July 19th, 2007 at 5:17 pmAdvocate torture? What about all those ticking bombs? Just look at the Threat level!

July 19th, 2007 at 5:18 pmThe stalling has to end already! Why hasn’t Harriet Miers been charged with INHERENT CONTEMPT yet? She ignored a Congressional subpoena last week. If you and I did that we’d be in jail.
INHERENT CONTEMPT is a little used, little known Constitutionally approved tool the Congress has. When charged she will be handcuffed and dragged to the House of Representatives by the Capitol Hill Police and Sergeant at Arms. SHE WILL THEN GO ON TRIAL IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE HOUSE. Depending on what she says or refuses to say she can be IMPRISONED IMMEDIATELY until the end of the Congress term expires.
Ordinary Criminal Contempt is a Dead End. The case will be handed to the US Attorney in DC who is a Bush lackey. He will most likely decline to follow through. This is the course Bush, Rove etc. want Democrats to take. The Dems. would be fools and cowards to take this route.
This is urgent. Here’s the phone number of all the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee. Call all of them even if they’re not your reps. Be relentless!

Kind hard to do when you only have 49 votes (with Johnson still out and Lieberman being buddy-buddy with the neo-cons) in the Senate, and Republicans are making you try for 60 votes by blocking anything that resembles progress (and then whining that Democrats are the obstructionists).

July 19th, 2007 at 5:31 pmWho is this simple-minded “Jim” Troll? Is it C**T V1?
This “Bush boom” consists of the stock market rising approximately 15% in the seven years of the Bush presidency — as opposed to 250% during the Clinton years.
It also consists of a rise in poverty, a decline in personal savings, a decline in real wages and buying power for the middle class, and record federal deficits and debt.

Sure. If you own stock – your good to go. But that doesn’t represent lots of concerns americans have: health care, retirement, honest govt (I almost threw up on that one), education, global warming, pollution, etc…The fact that bush was squatting in our WH during that time period does not mean he had anything to do with it. And anyway, if he did, the rising stock market almost certainly means more money for those who already HAVE IT. It doesn’t help the VAST MAJORITY of Americans address their real concerns. Bush is an idiot. He got lost leaving a phone booth the other day. All hat and no cattle. Come on – just because he has lost the war, the reputation of USA, 1/2 trillion dollars, lives of our brave soldiers, any credibility – at least he made you a few bucks, and thats all that matters, no?

We could discuss the many, many variables involved with regard to the stock market (or any other financial instrument). The growth throught the ninetys had much to do with the dot.com bandwagon. As with anything which goes up, it came back down. Again lots of variables were in the mix, so to highlight, say rising incomes, you would need to be specific on whose incomes were rising. Certainly the top classes benefitted. Most on the bottom tiers did not fare so well. You speak to poverty. How do you define poverty? Your thesis is far to broad and unspecific to be helpful. If you made money – you are happy and Bush is doing a fine job. If you did not benefit much by the stock market or rising wages, you would not agree that bush is doing a good job. It’s really simple. Just like bush – very simple. Anyway, I’m going into my 27th year as a bank officer – dealing with IPO’s and international offerings – so what would I know, huh?

July 19th, 2007 at 6:13 pmTom, I define poverty by the federal government’s guidelines, and the poverty rate in this country declined every year Bill Clinton was in office — from 15.4% under Bush I to 11.3% when eh handed the baton to Bush II. It has since risen every year, except for 2005, I believe, when it stayed the same.
Does that analysis work for you?
In terms of incomes, again, I rely not on personal or anecdotal evidence as so many right-wingers love to do, I rely on statistics from the federal government — the Census Bureau, for instance, or HHS. Those stats show that on average, middle class incomes rose during the 90s and, adjusted for inflation, they have retreated over the last six years.
As far as the stock market performance goes, of course there are many variables. But if simple-minded trolls are going to claim there is some “boom” because the stock market has finally reached 14,000, then simple analyses are the only thing that will have any impact on their thinking. Based on sheer numbers, the stock market rose over 250% in the 90s, and has risen less than 20% since. Doesn’t sound like a boom to me.
July 19th, 2007 at 6:13 pm#95 Let me guess…you define yourself as “Republican†or “Ditto-Head.†Ace

July 19th, 2007 at 6:48 pmBut it certainly is illustrative of precisely how important the Patriot Act was to their “secret agenda”, isn’t it? To track down a poor man in a hospital room and attempt to coerce him into singing something he’s stated he didn’t agree with….now that’s getting pretty damn desperate if you ask me.
July 19th, 2007 at 6:49 pmThis “piece” of the intricate (well perhaps not so intricate since most americans are figuring it out now) puzzle was the facilitating factor to bringing their demented neofascist agenda into play by effectively shutting down all dissent. They knew that whistleblowers would eventually sing and sooner or later people would begin to figure things out….so what do they next do? They hack the voting machines to effectively squelch the only avenue of “voice” the people have, thereby effectively dissolving the voice of the people.
The pretext for the enactment of the Patriot Act (which was hatched, BTW, by the PNAC well in advance of 911) had to be 911 or the people would have said WTF??
Without 911, none of this could have taken place. That’s why the connection between Saddam and 911 was parroted by everyone in the Bush Cabal ad nauseum…..
They used the anger fueled by 911 to enter Iraq. Connect those dots. They’re all out there and, with each passing day, those dots are beginning to beam brighter and brighter. Even some who are not the sharpest knives in the drawer are finally “getting it”. This tells me that the neofascists are getting very desperate; ergo, talk of Iran which is precisely the same as what we heard in the run up to Iraq.
Be not fooled, people. Trust in your gut. Human beings are hardwired for Truth – we know that. It’s when ulterior motives like greed & power get into the mix that we compromise that hard wiring for the obvious payoff. Have you sold your soul to the demons? Your gut will tell you the answer whether you desire to hear it or not.

The stock market has skyrocketed after his tax cut on dividends and marginal rates!

Why the five year delay in the stock market surge? Could it have anything with two international corporations, each having the majority of their business based overseas enjoying surging profits because of the plunge of the dollar?
July 19th, 2007 at 7:16 pmI have 65% of my investments based on overseas and Canadian markets and have an annual rate of return of 28%.
In France, Coca Cola costs more than vintage wine. Not because it was produced in the United States, but because it is produced using sugar from nations that do not have a sugar subsity that comes from the pockets of US citizens.
Why hasn’t Harriet Miers been charged with INHERENT CONTEMPT yet? She ignored a Congressional subpoena last week. If you and I did that we’d be in jail.
INHERENT CONTEMPT is a little used, little known Constitutionally approved tool of the Congress.

Ashcroft was barely conscious and under medication. It is amazing that he understood what he was being asked to do. The moral and legal implications go way beyond Gonzos lack of conscience. No one expects Gonzo to have a conscience. Major pieces of legislation should not be signed by officials who are blitzed out with pain medication. That’s why there’s a transfer of power in those situations. Maybe Ashcroft’s real objection was that he knew that he was in no shape to make such a decision.
Remember, Gonzo also believes in confessions obtained by torture.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:20 pmFirst you have to have compasion, morals, ethics to show regret, and Gonzo has none of those qualities, so he doesn’t have a problem torturing, murdering, stealing, lieing, enabling criminal activity, etc. He is a perfect fit for the Repukian Mafia.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:38 pmSo, please tell me why this was a CLOSED DOOR session? Congress needs to interview everyone in the light of day and under oath. No more closed sessions.
And of course Gonzales has no regrets. He has no conscience and he has no soul, so there can never be anything there for him to regret.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:41 pmHey, asswipe JIM, I mistakingly read one of your off topic repukian talking points posts. Mistakingly…..when I see Jim on the sign off, I skip it, as everyone else should.
Ignore the repukian trolls – and no the dow is not helping the average Joe – only the super rich profit at the cost of the rest of us.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:48 pmI’m not sure if the Bushies hire people without souls or consciences, or if they hire people who believe they have the opportunity to do good and then suck any moral values right out of them.
Either way, anybody who serves in this administration winds up a soulless automaton, capable only of adhering to the “agenda” — regardless of who dies or who gets hurt. The fact that Gonzo would badger a very sick man to accomplish a sordid objective isn’t surprising — it’s typical.
Colin Powell managed to escape before he was drained completely, but it will take awhile even for him to get his moral compass on track.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:49 pmOk, 108 posts and 18 were by Jim and 13 were by people responding to Jim. That’s about 28% of the posts being trolls and troll feeders.
I had such high hopes that you had finally learned and were going to ignore the troll, and you all did up until about post 60. Then in the next 40 posts 14 people responded to Jim. So, Jim still wins this one.
Congratulations Jim, you are the troll winner of this thread.
PLEASE DON’T FEED THE TROLLS. You were doing so well but then you just couldn’t resist. Responding to the trolls is letting them take over this site. BARTLEBEE seems to think that if we don’t respond to the trolls we are losing something. I completely disagree. I think that by responding to the trolls we are losing because they are taking over threads and driving away good people who have something to contribute to this site.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:50 pmIt is positively astonishing that the person who embodies the attorney for the United States has such disdain and disrespect, let alone understanding of the law.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:51 pmKatie – I have been trying for a long time with the IGNORE THE TROLLS campaign, and people kept responding to the scum anyway, I am considering just dropping this site because the Trolls are out of control and I believe ones like Mr. Pres & CT_V1 should be banned for sure. Although as of late I have been slamming the Trolls big time, just for fun, but soon tired of it, and am trying to just ignore them again.
Ignore the trolls – Read 111 Katie, she is so right about this, it has gotten out of hand.
July 19th, 2007 at 8:02 pmThis is my standard anti-troll post:
The trolls are paid to come here and be a speed bump or spider’s web. Their job is to tie you up in endless arguement and waste your time and energy. Don’t play their game. Use your precious skills, time and energy to write editorials for newspapers and call your representatives. Its easy to fall into troll quicksand. Be smarter and avoid the trap.
July 19th, 2007 at 8:24 pmDow hits 14000!
The Bush boom continues. {pop}

Actually, this is a good marker of inflation. The 2% have to put all those petro-dollars that Bernake is printing someplace. With hyperinflation hitting us now, I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes to 20,000 in the next two years. Meanwhile, jobs are fewer and pay less and less.
July 19th, 2007 at 9:00 pmOf course Gonzo has ‘no regret’. Regret is a human emotion…one needs to possess a soul to be capable of it.
July 19th, 2007 at 9:16 pmJim sez:
Yes…it’s unfortunate that the dollar’s continued slide against the euro counteracts all that and then some, so in reality, were doing more poorly in regards to the rest of the world than before…
But go ahead and keep crowing “14,000!” if it makes you feel better…
July 19th, 2007 at 9:18 pmGonzales actually manages to make Ashcroft look like a human being and not like a bible thumping thug who bears the Constitution little love himself. I salute you Gonzo, I had no idea you could come off less human than Grand Inquisitor Ashcroft.
July 19th, 2007 at 9:34 pm…it’s east when you have no conscience or integrity (like yer average righty)
July 19th, 2007 at 10:19 pmIs it a Karl Rove rule that trolls must have the most incredibly boring and generic names? Jim? Unmemorable is good, eh?
You do know the market was in GREAT shape in September of 1929 (a very similar era to what we have now). You do know what I mean, right, Corky?
July 19th, 2007 at 10:33 pmWho likes Gonzalez? The guy is a creepy little torture-loving bastard. Is that you, 29%ers? You losers would be KGB supporters in the USSR (hell, you would be turning in your neighbors) and you would do the same with the Gestapo. Cowardly murderers.
July 19th, 2007 at 10:41 pmAshcroft wasn’t the only sick person in that hospital room that night.
Gonzales is one sick, sick individual.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:57 pmsociopaths feel no regret. when he goes to prison, he will say he was railroaded. guilt-regret, these are foreign concepts.
July 20th, 2007 at 12:07 amI wouldn’t have any regrets pulling the lever on Gonzales at the gallows.
