That is a very good thing. Now, if they could somehow get rid of all the neoCONs that Bush has packed on the PBS board and in management, we may have one fairly objective media resource.
I really don’t get why Bush would want to cut funding for PBS. I would think “Sesame Street” would be one educational media show he could understand. Of course, maybe the Christian Pharisees pressured him because of Bert and Ernie and their “special relationship”.
Well, let’s see, Kev. It doesn’t have people eating bison testicles so it is not worthy to be on the air, right? Some people have class. Unfortunately, not many (like you).
Hello everyone! Keep your eyes on the prize: a voting system which requires a PAPER TRAIL. Without a positive outcome nothing else matters in the political arena.
“Information” is this President’s enemy. That’s why he goes to such lengths to restrict it:
First it was “Free Speech Zones”, then “illegal wiretaps” of American citizens, followed not too far behind with an attempt to put “tollbooths on the Internet” by restricting traffic to the highest bidder, and now it’s “Public Broadcasting”,with its news and community programming.
I expect “newspaper censorship” to be next… or did I miss a story?
Television and the Internet are making children disruptive, disrespectful and greedy, government-backed research has found. A study by the National Consumer Council will warn today: ‘Those who spend lots of time in front of the TV and computer screen are more materialistic. ‘These children argue more with their family, have a lower opinion of their parents and lower self-esteem.’
If thats the case why use tax dollars to make our kids greedy? They will want to grow up to be Capitalists. :)
Bush has spent more than all 42 presidents before combined idiot. Now he’s running around bragging about how he has cut his own deficit. Are you guys born stupid or did you have to work on it.

Well of course the President wanted to torpedo the CPB. he couldn’t get away with stacking it with his stooges, can you say Kenneth Tomlinson, so why not just vanquish it. That really was the first sign of The Stooge Implant Project, better known as Boobs for America……
PBS is a national treasure and a heckuva bargain. It’s been shown by Univ of Maryland’s PIPA (along with NPR) to be one of the most reliable sources for accurate information, more so than any of the corporate news networks. In this case, a publicly funded operation performs better than competitors that are privately owned. It’s worth paying for publicly, just as education is worth paying for publicly.
One is their commercials. One more advertizement for Archer Daniels Midland on PBS, and I am going to throw up. Public Broadcasting was supposed to be commercial free.
The other is how they handle listing sponsors at the end of each program.
If it is someone like ADM, the quote their slogan in full (e.g., “…ADM – “Resourceful by Natureâ„¢.”)
And of course, they end with “…And Viewers like you.” That of course is true, because we routinely sit through their commercials begging us for money.
However, when they advertize for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, they DON”T qoute the CPB slogan:
“A private corporation funded by the American people.”
We funded it. We ought to get the credit, if they just GOTTA put on all those commercials! {:-)
Having said my gripes about PBS and CPB, now let me give them a lot of credit.
My kids grew up watching Sesame Street. I didn’t feel like I had to monitor to make sure some high level corporation executive wasn’t trying to manipulate them to manipulate me to buy some crap my kids didn’t need, yet they manage to entertain them AND educate them.
I feel I can depend on News Hour and Washington Week to give me news that is (unlike Faux Noise) actually “Fair and Balanced.”
And as others have said, Bill Moyers is a REAL National Treasure.
So, gripes or not, I say, “Way to go, PBS and CPB for getting the funding from us, the American people, to fund the wonderful programs you provide!”
The idealized “free market” gave us Enron, the Bhopal Union Carbide disaster, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, the Savings and Loan crisis and on and on and on.
“Corporate welfare”? That’s the best argument you can come up with? An entity that is set up solely to provide service to the American public and your argument is that we shouldn’t provide any public funding? Hee hee.
If we’re going to address “corporate welfare,” we’ll begin with oil companies, the auto industry, Halliburton, the pharmaceutical industry, the insurance industry, and Wall Street. It’ll be many, many, many years before we get to such outrages as providing $400m to provide quality programming for our children and all Americans.
I’m guessing it’s because Bill Moyers is back. They managed to throw him off PBS once, but now he’s more brilliant than ever. Last week’s show with John Nichols and Bruce Fein discussing the reasons Bush and Cheny need to be impeached now was the most incredible news program in the last 20 years.
Bill Moyers is the best journalist alive today. He is an honor to the profession — a man struck from the mold of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite. What a surprise a retard monkey who can’t even spell “PBS” would want to stifle his voice of dissent.
I’ll be the only thing Bush has ever watched on PBS is “Curious George” — something he apparently is not.
“I’m guessing it’s because Bill Moyers is back. …discussing the reasons Bush and Cheny need to be impeached now was the most incredible news program in the last 20 years.”
Powkat – good insight! The NeoCons hate Moyers because he tells the truth, and the NeoCons can’t handle the truth, unless it is the Faux Noise “truthiness” kind of truth.
It galls me too, that C-Span, funded by the giant cable monopolies, gets to broadcast the House and Senate sessions, instead of PBS, funded by the American people. The NeoCons had a field day screwing with the American people’s broadcasting system, since the days of Reagan the Terrible.
That’s a pretty good margin of passage.
July 19th, 2007 at 10:48 pmYea!
That is a very good thing. Now, if they could somehow get rid of all the neoCONs that Bush has packed on the PBS board and in management, we may have one fairly objective media resource.
July 19th, 2007 at 10:53 pmIf I were a Republican I wouldn’t vote for that measure. CPB has become a right wing machine.
July 19th, 2007 at 10:53 pmIf Bush vetoes my Masterpiece Theatre, I’ll impeach him all by myself!

July 19th, 2007 at 10:58 pm$420 million ….less than a day and a half in Iraq… a relative bargain
July 19th, 2007 at 11:10 pmPLC that’s a pretty good one. LOL
July 19th, 2007 at 11:15 pmpork it up! Subsidies for everyone, courtesy of the Democratic Congress.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:17 pmChevron and ADM like sponsoring the NewsHour. It softens their image and reduces the chances of (eliminates?) negative coverage.
Maybe that’s why the Republicans are willing to fund CPB.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:18 pm“Sesame Street” is not hurting for money. The thing about PBS is that if the shows could make it in the market it wouldn’t need to use Tax money.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:21 pmBush Co is like the modern day Robin Hood, he robs from the poor and gives it to the rich, Less money for the people, more money for the rich.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:24 pmm12, how about the Bridge to Nowhere???? Good idea!!!
July 19th, 2007 at 11:24 pmGood. And thanks to a good chunk of republicans as well who voted for this.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:24 pmKevin,
Too bad the “market” is full of idiots that can’t appreciate the shows on PBS.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:25 pmKevin, that is stupid.

July 19th, 2007 at 11:27 pmThe market gives us Survivor and American Idol.
Probably the worst argument ever for free-market economics.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:27 pm$420 million bucks : a drop in the bucket as compared to the corp. welfare given to the Energy Industry and Big Pharma who have record pofits.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:27 pmTony, the right complains about social programs but they orgasm over givaways to corporations.

There was a system developed for Microsoft. Can work the same way for any e-voting machine.
basically, you vote, check the paperballot against what you voted for. if there is a discrepancy, you report it, and system is down…
but, if it is same, you put it in box right there like we used to.
If exit poll is different than count (2000 and 2004) go to the ballet boxes.
if there is a discrepancy, there is a violation.
